HBelmont67

There's actually a short comic detailing Ripley's story with the Briarwoods. It's called the Whitestone Chronicles (vol. one), and it fills in quite a few blanks. Not a bad read.

HBelmont67

I'm not sure which pair of episodes would be better suited for a double drop: 1x11-1x12 or 1x12-2x1. Either way, I hope we get one. 🙏

Suplee215

Fun fact thats very subtle. Ripley lost her arm because of the gun. In her experiment to make the weapon she caused the injury to herself. Never outright said but thats what was meant by "mixing science and magic"

Swanzy

Percy and Cassandra's hair change to white was due to the immense trauma and stress of the torture they went through in the flashback and with everything else that happened to them in the past.

Ferret

We did in fact leave Trinket at home. As has been mentioned, CR was a Pathfinder game before they started streaming and switched to 5e. Animal companions in Pathfinder 1e were extremely good, in 5e they aren't. Early on Laura didn't want to risk Trinket dying because he was a CR 1/4 creature, so she frequently left him at home.

HBelmont67

It's called Marie Antoinette syndrome, apparently.

Suplee215

Matt Mercer doesnt dm that way with unavoidable deaths baked in. He always gives a possibility even if hes expecting a character to die. Death is always a possibility and so is survival.

Swanzy

Yess, that!! I couldn't recall the name 😅

Sheay

I don't think I could ever consider torturing children to be a neutral activity to partake in. That's just me though.

HBelmont67

Plus, I hear animating animals as opposed to people is challenging.

Swanzy

Oooh definitely the 1- 11 & 12 double drop would be grand! 😬

Swanzy

Fair 😂

HBelmont67

It's more Ripley's standing that's neutral. Messed up as it is, she doesn't have animosity towards the de Rolos. This is just business to her, a means to an end.

HBelmont67

That's what I've been saying.

HBelmont67

Keyleth: "Oh, and abandon the revolution we caused?" Funny enough, that's kinda how my first DnD session went. I joined the party when they were opposing the corporation exploiting the town I set up in. I left after the initial encounter with the boss's goons. Only difference is that our revolution . . . didn't end well. 😬

HBelmont67

Also, cmon Keyleth. Have a heart, lol.

StorytellerDave

Ripley is an interesting character, but an absolute monster for what she did with torturing Percy and Cass not to mention killing a bunch of the other family members too.

StorytellerDave

Btw Montana is 100% correct about Cass. She had a mix of Stockholm syndrome, resentment for Percy running away and vampiric mind control going as confirmed by Matt Mercer himself.

StorytellerDave

Btw, not all damage is halved by Rage, unless you are that one specific subclass (Bear Totem) that gets to halve everything, which Grog is not. It is only basic physical stuff, slashing, piercing, bludgeoning damage.

HBelmont67

I feel like it's 60% vampire charm, 15% Stockholm Syndrome, and 15% resentment. The charm probably amplified the other two.

Suplee215

Yup. 5 years of being charmed and being manipulated. Deadly duo

Letts React

ahh i am a bear totem in my game so I conflated the two

Letts React

when i say neutral I mean either side could have paid her to do that. Chaotic neutral means you're evil but don't care who you do evil to

Robert Bonfante

Vampire charm is also extra potent (-2 save against in the 3e days). That certainly doesn't help.

HBelmont67

Ya lost me. Is that not Chaotic Evil? It sounds like you're saying being neutral is evil, and that doesn't sound right. Ripley feels more like True Neutral, but that's my halfly-uneducated on DnD opinion.

Robert Bonfante

I am aging myself with this comment, but the intro to TLOVM reminds me of the intro to the classic Thundercats cartoon. Granted, the Thundercats intro was much more hyper-kinetic, but the vibe is the same and the characters each get their moments in both intros.

Lucky

So the reason Ripley has the unfinished pepper box is never actually said in the show. Bit is explained in the campaign. Basically when vox machina met percy he was in prison for attempted murder. The attempted murder happened to be Dr Ripley when she was in another city. The guards of that city stopped him and she ran away back to Whitestone having now seen his weapon and is trying to replicate it

AuroraZero_

I didnt know there was a name for it!

AuroraZero_

Someone i think mentioned this already but ya Matt never plans to kill someone, but he doesn't hold back. And ya they are all aware that death can happen at any moment! But that also means survival is also always there too!

HBelmont67

I mentioned in another comment, but there is a short comic detailing Ripley's time working for the Briarwoods. Both the unfinished pepperbox and her missing arm are explained there.

HBelmont67

Vox Machina's intro does have that kinda vibe. Another example of a modern cartoon emulating that is Netflix's She-Ra, though that series has it's own predecessor to draw inspiration from.

Suplee215

That is one take on it but not a common one. Game sources describe neutral as being out for yourself but not actively going against society morals and stuff to cause destruction. No way to really do what she did without being soem flavor of evil. It get complicated and the alignment system is overall not very nuance. I think the Yawgomoths are a good example of this. They're neutral evil fiends who will do whatever you pay them to do and fight for the highest bidder in the blood war between demons and devils. Neutral wont just flip a coin and decide to kill someone or do so on a whim. They wont have issues killing someone if they got to. But torture without cause is certainly evil.

Robert Bonfante

I've heard that. It's a little bit of both. Vox Machina is into their teens level wise at this point and D&D does kind of nerf animals. But also, the undead do present a problem for animal companions.

Ferret

I'm not actually familiar with undead and animal companions in 5e having issues. I know in Pathfinder 1e there was a (slightly obscure) rule that required a successful Nature check to command animal companions to approach undead and fiends, but I didn't think 5e had that issue.

Soup in Boots

Y'all should react to the intros they did for Critical Role's campaign 1. They're pretty short, though, so it may not be enough content to justify a video.

dannydarko27

I wouldnt mind watching them do every intro, without context theyre not spoilery at all

Soup in Boots

Totally fair and also you have an S-tier name. Nice one!
