Askaladd chopping at his neck like that is basically him saying I’ll reward you with another duel if you do this thing for me

SwagKage

They are gonna love season 2 I can already tell.

Lyrical Kell of Music

I’m glad they don’t hold back with Thorfinns actions, and at the very end I like that they didn’t have him have this massive internal conflict speech, we can’t hear it but sitting in that house he made a choice. After a flash of guilt, he simply takes a deep breath and packs it away. For better or worse thorfinn wants revenge, lives be damned

robo

i’m just so thrilled you’re watching this masterpiece,, can’t wait for season 2! y’all are gonna love it 🫶🏻

Izrail Gevorgyan

Man y'alls reactions are EVERYTHING for this show... This show might become even more of a masterpiece bc of how y'all are reacting to it, just makes me appreciate s1 even more.

Jade

What a powerful episode, no matter how many times you watch it, it's still so impactful. So excited for the the next few episodes. Also season 2 is phenomenal!

Adel

Askelad meant if you want my head and a proper duel, you have to go scout.

StorytellerDave

We are a few centuries from the heyday of English longbowmen, but yeah, them arrows are nothing to scoff at, even in this time period. I am surprised they didn't show a proper viking shield wall get formed in return. I guess bc of the ambush they did not have the time to form up.

StorytellerDave

Gosh, the hyper anime fighting with this art style and the historical setting still messes with my brain. I don't know if I can get used to it lol. Seeing proper period armor and weapons and then dual wielding dagger anime fighting is just such a tonal dissonance for me.

Erin Ryan

I'm agnostic but I love the way Christianity is used in this show

HBelmont67

As a Christian myself, I gotta ask . . . what exactly do you mean by that? Not wanting to argue, just curious.

Cyan_Sky9135

Yeah thats what I think too. Frankly it could be both. I'm kinda surprised Kenny didnt pick up on that

Tyler Owens

God this show destroys me. As someone who went to war when I was essentially a child (deployed to Afghanistan when I was 20) and was a part of things that were objectively horrible before I really had a chance to know better, I can’t help but empathize with Thorfinn.

HBelmont67

This show does not shy away from the fact that Askeladd and his band are bad people. So is the MC Thorfinn, for that matter. 😞 It's not something you see done often.

Franina

Yes they thought it was gonna be an easy take down so they didn’t bother with proper fighting etiquette

Franina

Love your reactions to this show it’s so good!

Franina

I agree the way they show Christianity in this show is one of my favorite things about this show.

Erin Ryan

I spelt agnostic wrong oops. I mean that I believe there is a god but i don't follow any sort of religion. I love how Vinland Saga contrasts Christian beliefs to the Vikings beliefs. Vinland saga really focuses on love in the Bible and it's just really beautiful.

HBelmont67

I thought agnostic was what you meant 😅

Okmai

when askeladd asked thorfinn to go scout ahead he made a gesture by his neck you guys saw it as a threat but i think he was reminding thorfinn that if he wants his head he has to work for it in a sense he was antagonizing him into doing it at least thats how i saw it

Erin Ryan

This episode is so heartbreaking with how the mother and daughter resemble his family so much. The mother is such a mix between his mother and thors, being extremely kind, motherly, and strong values. A cold but hardworking sister who loves and wants to protect her mom

Cation

Such an impactful and sad episode.. Really shows how f'ed up times used to be (and still are in many parts of the world). The art.. The story-telling, the grey area, the music (god bless Yutaka Yamada). There's a reason why this is one of the greatest shows ever and up there tied with Berserk and Vagabond as top three seinen. So happy you guys are reacting to this. These shots from this episode are just heart-breaking and powerful, words not even needed for this imagery: https://imgur.com/a/EVZalbV

Aidan Cristea

Thorfinn just sighing at the end after that, and his eyes just losing their light is one of the best examples of emotional repression I have seen in any medium… just incredible

Seadd

Vikings for the most part were farmers, hunters, etc. Normal freemen in Denmark/Sweden/Norway. But because of the climate and poor farming conditions when harvests were poor or the weather didn't permit they would go Viking, mainly raiding the northern shores of Europe (Modern Day Belgium, Netherlands, Germany etc). Once they arrived to England and saw how fertile and divided the island was (At this time there was no unified "English" kingdom, just many different petty kings) they wanted to move in and settle, which some did successfully in the northern parts of England/Scotland. Eventually (after 100+ years of raiding, fighting, etc) tensions rose and the King of Denmark sent a full force to fully colonize England and enact the Danelaw, basically annexing a large portion of the Island into Denmark.

Juanpa_20

Yeah I love crash out thorfin but lowkey this episode kinda made me shed a tear 😭 that lady really wanted him to be a part of his family and even called him by the name of her late child 🥲

StorytellerDave

And you can play it all out in Crusader Kings 3! Buy now for only 49.99! (jkjk) Sorry, it is a really good post, but it would also make for a good youtuber ad-read for CK3 lol

Jesse S

Dammit I always cry in this episode 😥

Erin Ryan

Child Thorfinns voice actor is so amazing and heartbreaking and Alex Le is just as good

Spooky_man

Islandic folk tales from the Viking age often revolves around revenge, I think revenge stories had a genre name from that time This is one of those stories (seemingly)

Catalin

Thorfinn joined Askellad when he was just 6 years old. At this point he is roughly 15-16. He’s literally spent more time as a Viking/soldier than as a civilian. Not a specific comment on anything from the video, just something that really hit me when I watched him age.

AJ Castillo

They would have attacked the village regardless. He did them a favor by warning them in advance

Sol

Definitely going to need a Thorfinn Trauma counter

Reccos

In my opinion this is one of the best standalone episodes I’ve ever seen. Absolute masterpiece, showing the horrors that war has not only on the soldiers/Vikings involved but helpless bystanders. The soundtrack is absolutely beautiful and the final scene showing the broken comb, symbolizing his commitment to this goal and willingness to throw away a peaceful life is gut wrenching

Oromis

They showed the year as 1008 so I think he has been with Askellad for 6 years now since Thors died in 1002, 15 years after the first scene of the show when Thors deserted. So think he is only 12-13 in this episode.
