Kenny. Quick note, remember that Askeladd has been shown to be pretty fast on his feet when he fought Thors and was actively starting offence during that fight . During this duel with Thorfinn, he barely moved much and only responded to Thorfinn attack, not because Thorfinn was a bigger threat but possibly because he didn't want to kill Thorfinn, which was why he provoked him psychologically instead.

that is def another look at it, but thors isn't a speedy guy, so of course Askeladd could rush him, I figured since this matchup is speed vs speed and Thorfinn speed blitzed him he may have been starting to surpass him speed wise, so he went for an emotional appeal instead

I think it’s hard to say if Thorfinn has surpassed Askelad or not but my thought process watching it for the first time was for all of the growing Thorfinn has done in the past few years, Askelad just has so much more battle experience it’s hard for me to see Thorfinn beating him even if he has a speed advantage.

I get from a battle standpoint why you would think thorfinn would beat askeladd in a duel (and even that is a bit of a stretch) . But we’re only 8 episodes and we haven’t seen much of askeladd’s character so why would they kill him off/ have him defeated so early into the story. I definitely think the rest of the series will surprise you in how it plays out. Enjoying the theories and deep discussions so far

Also the way Montana reacted to when Thor’s said “still crying like a little baby” made me think if they ever played God of war on their game play throughs she probably wouldn’t like kratos lol

Kenny actually has played that on the channel before, so maybe there's a chance she's seen it. If she would initially dislike Kratos, that would be by design, as he's not the best father at the start of the game.

Random note, but i just want to say that I'm glad I discovered yalls channel back when i started watching AoT reactions. With heavy emphasis on the fact that yalls reactions are done WITH the content in the video itself. So many others I've looked into are all "watch alongs" where YOU have to have the content and play the reaction at the same time. (So you have to have two different videos playing at once and sync them up right) So much appreciation for yalls phenomenal content!

Oof that's such a good analysis of Thorfinn's interaction with Hordaland and his dream dad/subconscious. He has some level of deep desire to ask these questions and understand Thors. That Pandora's box is right there in the corner of his mind. With a key hole the shape of his father's eye.

Yeah, I read the fight as Askelad never had any intention of killing Thorfinn (he as much as said that he is intentionally baiting Thorfinn so that he stays useful). The first exchange he almost got the same pin off, but Thorfinn saw it coming and jumped away. So he taunted him to get Thorfinn to stop thinking about defense and that let him get the pin off easily. I don't think their skills are even remotely close, so once Thorfinn failed to catch Askelad monologuing the fight was pretty much over.

lol exactly! I don’t know why they think the main characters will defeat the main villains so easily. When I make these comments pointing it out I try not to sound rude because it can seem that way but i genuinely don’t know why they think the main characters are just gonna beat the crap out of strong villains. They do this especially with Gon and Killua. I’m afraid when episode 50 comes around because it’s just gonna push that agenda that they have about Gon and Killua even further 🤦

so excited for next episode, love hearing both your analysis on thorfinn and askeladd and how they differ, everyone seems to walk away from this show with a different perspective it will be interesting to see how yours evolves as it really gets into the meat of the story

Isayama (AoT) and Yukimura (Vinland) are fans of each others works. Kenny’s (from AoT) line where he says “everyone is a slave to something” is actually likely a reference to Askeladd’s line, as the manga for Vinland Saga actually released years before AoT despite its very late adaptation. In fact, this year the Vinland Saga manga celebrated its 20th birthday.

I’m with Kenny on this. When Thorfinn got riled up he took a wide swing for a forceful blow, when he usual goes for targeted. Like going for a haymaker instead of a tight hook

The way I look at the moment in the duel when Askeladd is trying to rile up Thorfinn, is more of Askeladd trying to impart a lesson on to Thorfinn. What I mean by that, is I think Askeladd is trying to point out Thorfinn's weaknesses in battle, because in his own twisted way he's kind of rooting for Thorfinn to win. So him doing the whole 'I don't remember your father' thing was his way of showing Thorfinn what he was saying at the dinner party, 'Everybody is a slave to something', in this case- vengeance.

I agree with Kenny, I think Askeladd knows Thorfinn has progressed to a point that if he took him on in a straight up honorable fight there's a chance Thorfinn might either actually get one over on him OR that he would have to kill Thorfinn which he doesn't want to do at this point because it's not only a waste of a great warrior in his group but that he does still feel some small amount of guilt for what he did to Thors who he actually respected as a warrior and as a man.
