Yuma Nanami

I would like to apologize for my corrections then. Sorry 👉👈 💜 But your reactions are still amazingly done, I hope you enjoy the show 🎉

VVenture

Finding out there are people actually mad at you getting a D&D rule wrong is hilarious considering just how many times Critical Role’s cast get rules wrong in their own games 🤣

HBelmont67

Whoo! We are back!! 🐉 🔥

StorytellerDave

Matt Mercer destroyed something he created and loved, and he did it with a smile.

Yuma Nanami

Yeah, you should definitely do a Table reaction to see how they did things. There are some cool side by side videos made.

HBelmont67

Rest in peace Lance Reddick, Thordak's voice actor who passed away the year this season came out. 🙏

HBelmont67

At the very least, he was able to record all his lines before he passed.

Franina

With the talk about all the dragon remind me of earlier this year when Kenny said he wants Montana to react to the lord of the rings series. I hope you guys react to both the hobbit and the lord of the ring series. Hopefully we get to see at least 1 movie this year from you guys!

Lucky

Thordak said try to fight or flee means no mercy. Them going to vox machina was considered fleeing

StorytellerDave

I think corrections are fine as long as you are nice and not mean about it

Yuma Nanami

I hope i never came across as mean, but i was definitely in the camp of correcting Scanlands Hand. Either way I still apologize for any offense I caused. Its the Canadian side of me 🇨🇦😅

HBelmont67

Wasn't it the reverse? I thought Montana had seen it and Kenny hadn't.

Shane Gilroy

The two children were played by Sam Riegel’s children so them convincing Scanlan was a nice touch

Franina

You’re probably right I just don’t know which one of them saw it. I don’t think either of them have seen the hobbit though. But one of them watched the lord of the rings. And even then I don’t know if they’ve seen all 3 lotr movies I think they only saw 1 or 2

StorytellerDave

34:30 - To be fair, bards have access to healing spells normally, so Scanlan could have just healing worded Keyleth there, but Scanlan did not get that ability in the show for simplicity purposes so he just did a rhyme onto the dirt thing Vax did. Worth noting that Keyleth was not dead there either, they said she was alive, but barely, which you could interpret as her having made her death saving throws, but not being up yet. Other than maybe Cassandra, I dont think anyone died and came back at this point in the show, but in the OG campaign ofc people died all the time, revivify is a pretty low level spell considering what level they were by this point, but Matt actually does make it harder to come back. He has a home rule, there is a roll for all revival spells that gets increasingly harder the more you die. Each death increases the DC by 1, so the more you die the higher the chance that it is permanent. PS - I hope this correction is not part of the 1% mean ones, Kenny let me know if it is.

StorytellerDave

Someone shared a playlist of table to screens a while back, I hope they check that out. When the show was first airing I also watched those kinds of clips on youtube all the time, they are so much fun

wanira 11

What a way to start the season, just casually destroy the whole city the story started from 🤯

HBelmont67

Montana's prediction of Scanlan seducing the dragons killed me. 🤣🤣 If anyone would actually attempt that, it would be Scanlan. 🐲 ❤️

HBelmont67

Thordak is an example of how you introduce a main villain. He went FULL Burning Godzilla this episode. 🔥 💥

BLUEMONKEY18

This event was insane to watch at the table. Image years of playing in this city, knowing ins and outs of it and having it feel like home for players and DM and then it all burns down around you. Also there’s a table moment I wish was in the shower when they’re fleeing with Gilmore it was more running around and working with a thieves guild to get out and there’s a moment when some people try to attack them and Gilmore using crown of stars to intimidate them. It’s a great moment of fun Gilmore being dead serious

HBelmont67

K&M stated him having faith in his players, but it felt like to me that was ACTUALLY trying to kill them this episode. 😵‍💫

HBelmont67

I think it's more that the show takes more leniency to bend the rules cause it's a show. I feel like they'd have to jump through a ton of hoops if they followed DnD rules exactly

StorytellerDave

Not just that, but DnD rules would take away a lot from the show. They mentioned in interviews that they were super worried about death becoming to easy to fix or too cheap, because in the campaign everyone died multiple times and then came back as per DnD rules, but in the show you cannot do that without losing all meaning of death. So they were really careful to try and rework some things.

StorytellerDave

I love GIlmore so much, I wish he had more fight scenes in the show.

Ethan Kayne

This episode was so nuts. I was on the edge of my seat the entire episode when I first saw it. I don't think I've ever seen an episode like this as a Premiere to a season. It didn't slow down momentum a bit. I hope you guys consider Castlevania after this one.

HBelmont67

Forreal. Talk about a crazy season opening. 💥 Also, I fully support them checking out Castlevania.

Ethan Kayne

Yeah I can't wait for their next season to come out and the spin-off series I heard they're coming out with as well

Wolfarick

The moment where Vax heals Keyleth is actually a moment that got changed from the campaign. In the campaign, Vex is the one who gets hit and nearly dies. She actually starts doing death saves. I thought the change from Vex to Keyleth was good though, as it serves the story in multiple ways. - It forces Vex to reconcile with the fact that her animosity toward Keyleth was stupid and petty because she genuinely does care about her. - Takes Keyleth out of the fight so she doesn’t just insta win the fight with daylight/sunbeam - Sets up Vex nicely with the “take off the mask” with Percy - Ramps up the stakes since Keyleth and Pike are the only ones who have healed in the show - Foreshadowed a character thing but won’t reveal because it’s a bit of a spoiler. It probably won’t be as explicit in the show, but it will be nice touch if you ever look back to this episode

Suplee215

I hope that I dont come off as being upset when I point things out. Criticism on i think trying to appoarch this as just a story can be very intereesting and i made a few comments about that aside i try to just point the facts out in a helpful way whether its about dnd or involving how the cr cast plays their game. Love these reactions. Also yay to Montana instinctively knowing the Bard joke.

Suplee215

Class wise allura the lady in blue is a wizard. Her dwarf companion Kima is a paladin. Gilmore is a sorcerer. I think those are the npcs with classes that appear in this episode.

Delinda Arts

Whenever a commenter is upset about a detail I just know they said “ERMMM, ACTUALLY” before typing their comment 😂 loving your D&D insight Kenny. Keep it up!

Gwendolyn Vrisala

Matt is known for his off-the-cuff style of DM'ing, where it's all about planning a general plot of the starting of the campaign, and making as much of the world around his players, so that when they choose to diverge from whatever he thinks they might do, he always can pull from that vast pool of info to "Yes, and~" in every situation. He is even known to have come up with some things on the spot, which then after the game, he expands into the rest of his world. My favorite style of DMing, and the one I personally use as well~

Suplee215

In the game it was just Pike revivifying and resurrecting everyone everyone a lot. But that cam be boring story telling so they did the near death and last minute healing here. Scanlan does take healing word as does keyleth and vex so a lot of battles become a cycle of one character healing yhe next and a hard learning how to heal by ad libbing what the druid in is in theme. This is part of why I think anything the show as a story first is cool because there are elements changed from the game that are not in the rules but this isnt a game. Its a tv show and they can change what they need

cryptc

as a D&D veteran, I do cringe a bit when Kenny gets things wrong, but I try to remember how it was when I first discovered D&D, and I was the same way. So I love the passion behind it, even when it's completely wrong :)

HBelmont67

When you think about it, dragons are not much different than kaiju, so you know who would be VERY useful right now? Kafka and the Defense Force

IceMike93

Allura (the blonde lady) is a wizard fyi Kenny asked lol

HBelmont67

If you're referring to Castlevania, the show itself is over and the spin-off, Nocturne, just had its second season this year. If you're referring to something else, ignore me.

Ethan Kayne

Apologies I meant the next season of Vox machina. And there's a spin-off series that is supposed to happen as well

HBelmont67

Is Gilmore, as well?

HBelmont67

I see. You must be referring to Mighty Nein, which is a separate campaign of Critical Role.

ItzWicho

Gilmore is a sorcerer

David L

"The Bard seduces the Dragon" is also like a classic D&D meme at this point and Montana unironically guessing that might happen is absolutely peak

David L

In the table game Matt ended up letting them play pretty loose with the whole fast-travel through trees things (probably just because it ends up being more fun that way) by usually just scrying at or near the location they wanted to go and finding a tree that way. Which isn't really how it's supposed to work but also it's a big "shrug and move on" kind of moment. So I think Keeper Yemen giving an incredibly vague description was a nod to that.

David L

It is pretty likely meant to imply she was in death saves; in the table game it was Vex and not Keyleth who went down in that moment and ultimately she just made enough death saves to not die so it sort of resolved itself. I think the only one who had died-died up to that point was Grog who just got immediately Revivified (and also that was during the part of the table game that got cut from the show). Cassandra was in the same boat, Death-Saves but not actually dead yet.

Letts React

First of all you’re right and second of all I am SO stealing the tree fast travel for my game I’m making haha

Letts React

See this I can appreciate. It’s kinda like how as a singer I’ll see new people sing and when they make critical mistakes I can’t help but feel a little cringe, but then remember they’re beginners and that’s part of the journey! That being said, never in a MILLION years would I comment “that voice crack made me cringe so hard”. It’s just kinda mean haha idk why people do it

Letts React

See this is what I thought, they probz made it different to make the story more compelling, but it was probz a healing word at the table. Makes sense to me!

Letts React

Dude as long as it’s phrased like “hey Kenny btw that’s bixbys hand not mage hand :)” rather than “Kenny saying it was mage hand is absolutely wrong, I cringe every time he gets things wrong 🙄” which I kid you not people have done. The thing is, I legit WANT to learn more about dnd, so the corrections ARE helpful!! I love getting to know more about the game, just wish a small percentage of people could be nicer and not so holier than thou about it. Main point is, if you’re nice, corrections are more than welcome!!

Suplee215

Yea it was actually a full revivify or other bring back dead spell. But they didn't want to make death look too easy to being back. But they use near death and almost dying in place of a full death a few times to keep death feeling like a risk. But yea. If a player tried to ad lib this at a table I dont think Matt will allow it. But if a player never uses a spell before and favored it this way when they do learn it that'll be love and that energy carries to writing.

Suplee215

Fair. Im not the most socially friendly person and at times my info dumping gets labeled as rude and I admit at times I totally get there. Mainly just an over thinker too. And yea. The big thing and one thing Matt mercer himself harps on is there is no wrong way to play amd every single table plays differently. Always hard to figure out new table dymanics at first. And Matt hates that some new players expects their dms to be like Matt. Called the Matt mercer effect.

Robert Bonfante

I would add the Critical Role and this show has introduced so many people to D&D, and role-playing games in general. It doesn't become us to gatekeep. I also try to curb my enthusiasm when commenting, partly because I don't want to come across as someone who is being a know-it-all, but also I don't want to accidentally spoil. When I watch reaction videos, I want authentic reactions. I want my influence to be as minimal as possible. :)

Letts React

💀💀💀like it’s just ridiculous

Letts React

As long as it’s a correction and not lowkey an insult (I.e. omg Kenny is insufferable with how much he messes up noticing things, makes this unwatchable) like some comments were actually crazy haha I’m sure yours were fine!

Robert Bonfante

Dragons in media that I've seen that are impressive: I've always loved Peter Jackson's depiction of Smaug in the Hobbit Trilogy. He captured both the beauty and physical power of dragons in one of the few bright spots to a mediocre trilogy. The dragons in the Dragon Prince are visually stunning and also quite well done. But I do think the TLOVM has hands down the best depiction of dragons. Their power, intelligence, varied personalities, it's all on display. And hats off to Lance Reddick who fully embodies Thordak, the Cinder King. It's such an awesome intro to Season 2 and for me, this season is one of the best sequel seasons I've seen in a long time. There's hardly any filler to this season -- all of the episodes are impactful and I can't wait to see the reactions. Lastly, I need to find these gardens that share my name. :)

Yuma Nanami

Oh wow really... Yeah that's definitely way to far, we'll im happy to see you two are still happy and Eager for this amazing tale 💜💜

Suplee215

Nice. I believe he made the tree travel spell because of the party too. They lost their only sorcerer (who is not in this game because he was a problem player and person and had a falling out with cr, trying to keep the info as fair and as drama free as possible) who was the only player with access to fast travel. So he needed a way for a druid or a bard to travel quick and the trre spell just feels like it should be a thing. Basically a druid version of teleportation circle.

Suplee215

Also vox machina was just on the list of who to take out because of brymscythe. Less for vengeance and more becuase they are a possible threat.

Suplee215

As Matt Mercer once said, there will always be people online who say "your fun is wrong". Its both sad and hilarious

dannydarko27

It sucks because the only reason Uriel died is because he stopped to help a guard. If he kept running he'd be safe, but that's not the type of ruler he was. He was for the people and in the end it cost him, but he died smiling; knowing his family was safe. Rip a real one

Suplee215

Crap so many people call her a dwarf i forgot she wasnt one lol. The most dwarf like hobbit

Zain Cassis

15:41 Love that instinct Kenny lmao

Suplee215

This. Even if he wasnt going to be the king, i feel like he would have gotten a position on the council and been damn good at it.

Ethan Kayne

Hey just a side note because of your comment about if Dragons actually existed we'd be screwed there is a movie called Reign of Fire with Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey about what if Dragons actually existed. I think it's actually worth the watch I found it quite enjoyable if you've never seen it

J Valentine

Spoilers for Campaign One of Critical Role: The episode name where this happens is called Omens. It's a great watch but at 4 to 5 hours an episode with over a hundred I'll narrow it down even further to say it's a little past half way through that episode. Such a good watch, I still go back to it from time to time. Matt will often have an idea of what the Players will do but he always often says that he is sometimes pretty scared for them. He is totally his Player's biggest fans. He'll be very level headed while it's happening but he's a big softie that will often tear up when one of the dies after the show comes to a close.

Bryce Ammons

Big heads up for this season and season 3! Always check out the songs that play during the credits. This episode just had the regular end song, but some episodes have special songs made just for that episode's credits!

Robert Bonfante

This makes me think of Solasta, a PC game that's heavily based on D&D 5e rules. When a PC character falls to 0 hit points, they do a series of death saves, and if they make enough of those the character goes unconscious instead of dying. If a 20 is rolled on one of those death saves, the character regains consciousness and has 1 hp.

LordUnreal

Wyvern dragon debate has nothing to do with arms. Traditionally if it breathes fire it’s a dragon If it doesn’t it’s a Wyvern

David L

The spell she is using is Transport via Plants, which is a 6th level PHB spell. Although iirc they often got it confused with Tree Stride, which is another similar spell in name and function of 5th level. Although you are probably right about why Kyleth added the spell to her usual repertoire. Incidentally, an enterprising group of druids setting up tree-stations around a large country could probably do quite well charging people a moderate fee to travel from grove to grove.

StorytellerDave

In the campaign, well rather, before the campaign, Pike died too. Her hair changed colours after coming back

StorytellerDave

Robert, that is just the DnD 5E death save system 1 for 1 with no changes? I played a bit of Solasta a while back, I really should go back and finish it tbh.

HBelmont67

If that's the case, then is it fire specifically, or having elemental breath of any kind?

HBelmont67

That's been a thing the whole show, I believe

AuroraZero_

Oh man I LOVED that movie growing up haha totally forgot about it!

AuroraZero_

Honestly same XD found dnd through Critical role and thus dnd bc very much my special interest...so im constantly thinking when I comment excitedly about the campaign or rules im like ok chill not everyone cares that much XD

AuroraZero_

Ya with Keyleth she wasn't actually dead dead yet (I think mechanically feels like a last death save? Kinda situation) so Vax wasn't just suddnenly being able to cast revivify lol

AuroraZero_

The fact I have literally seen a few of those messages makes me laugh. Like chill its not that serious XD

StorytellerDave

They're usually specified further with an adjective in that case. Frost dragon, Green dragon, Black dragon etc etc... The leg/wing thing is messy bc it excludes a lot of different kinds of dragons - Chinese and Japanese dragons tend not to have wings at all for example

StorytellerDave

I really liked that movie, but also it made 0 sense lol. Jet fighters would have shredded those lizards in a matter of minutes, cuz dragons don't fly at the speed of sound

StorytellerDave

They introduced me to DnD too, and now Daggerheart, I am getting sucked into it, I wanna DM a campaign, got an idea for one already, just gotta flesh out some details, gather some players and away we go :D CR is was my gateway drug lol

Ethan Kayne

You know I thought that too but I think it was a matter of the sheer number of them that the humans couldn't deal with. I think they said in the beginning they tried to Nuke them too and we did more harm than good or something like that

StorytellerDave

Mighty Nein is the "spin off" of Vox Machina, but it's just their 2nd campaign with a whole new party, set on another continent (Wildemount) years after VM finish their campaign on Tal'Dorei. It is also incidentally my favorite campaign of theirs and I think overall it tends to be the fan favorite too. It is just REALLY good. They have a couple references and ties to VM, but not much. Delilah and Silas are actually from that continent (Wildemount), and Ripley as well.

Suplee215

Wyvern is a relatively new and niche word. Only a few countries make the difference between dragons with 4 legs and 2 legs and its mainly for purposefully of coat of arms type stuff. England, Scotland, wales, Ireland and France are the only places that makes the distinction really witb other countries just calling the same creature dragons. Most classification and differences between yhe 2 come from modern fantasy

Suplee215

They switched who died here too. In behind the scenes videos they talked about how they took the moment where another character died during the fight and gave it to keyleth, also for story telling reasons

Suplee215

Holy shit the spell did exist in the 2014 handbook. Always thought it was a homebrew. I swear I never saw it before. Learn something new every day

Letts React

thats partially true about the firebreathing haha but dragons have 4 legs 2 wings wyverns have 2 legs 2 wings

dannydarko27

It has, I commented it back in season one lol. Nobody ever stays for the credits these days

dannydarko27

Kenny is right the debate isn't about a breath weapon it's about the anatomy of the creature.

dannydarko27

Sorry for the correction Kenny, but Vax as the rogue did not do the healing spell. All he did was grab the components for said spell and Scanlan cast it. The amount of times Scanlan would save the group or prevent the death of one of its members is insane. Dude was the definition of a clutch player. WIthout spoilers: there's even a moment in the campaign were he could've done something for another player that would essentially prevent a future disaster, but was forced to use the one time spell/item to help in the critical moment. Sam Riegel proceeded to break down into tears because he didn't want the future thing to happen to one of his friends OC. Its honestly so hard to watch but shows how much he cares in and out of game.

LordUnreal

In dnd yes but i was making a general statement that the current practice media/portrals has nothing to do with leg amounts

Letts React

no, it actually does haha dragons have 4 legs wyverns have 2 not just in dnd

Suplee215

Do you have a source on this? What wyvern with 4 legs can you name? Media seems to go with the historical use of wyvern being a 2 legged dragon.

LordUnreal

lol this is my Roman Empire if have been arguing this for more then a decade. The leg difference stems of medieval and pre renaissance heraldry. Which is where most people get the difference. But heraldry is art and artistic interpretation inconsistent regarding depiction. Game of thrones dragons 2 legs (in extended lore wyverns exist in the south are described as more beastial with 2 legs) Elder scrolls dragons 2 legs HTTYD - 2 legs, 4legs, no legs Monster Hunter - Both 2 and 4 legs (note they have another creature that is separate known as wyverns that are 2 legged). Tolkien dragons are all over the place. Warcraft 4 legs (wyverns are cat bat scorpion chimeras) Witcher - 4 legs (their wyverns are smaller viscious and not intelligent) Eastern dragons 4 legs no wings. Also the wyvern is not a classical mythological creature, but a medieval invention born from heraldry, linguistic evolution, and symbolic art. Its identity as a two-legged “dragon” became popular through artistic and cultural shorthand, not ancient myths. Can keep going as I just copied and pasted this from a doc I have lol but in the end we can agree to disagree Keep up the reactions your gonna love s2 and s3

Ferret

The moment of Grog trying to attack the dragon and his axe breaking is one of my favorite accidental gags in the campaign. Travis declares his attack, gets a 19, and he's literally about to roll his damage dice when Matt says a 19 misses. And the look on Travis's face when he realizes what that means is *priceless.*

cade-carter

ummmm no it literally is if it has arms stupid. But also it doesnt actually matter. if the writer wants to call a dog a dragon they can, and it would be a dragon

LordUnreal

Again wrong I will die on this hill. And again we can agree to disagree and no need to call anyone stupid

Ky McKenna

"For the people like that, don't." LMAO yes. As a fellow dnd nerd, Ive had a couple of those moments, but in the end its just a game/show and its not that big of a deal. Keep up the fun stuff yall, and thanks for sharing it with us.

SonofHope

The fun fact to gate keeping dnd, Matt Mercer actually uses a heavily modified pathfinder game for their show, so call it whatever you want it's all in the spirit of it anyways

SonofHope

Wyvern are consider a dragonoid but not a dragon, similar to a zebra and a horse being similar but two distinct animals

SWTobito

Lore Bards, man, they're like wizards when it comes to spell variety

SWTobito

True but the ones for season 2 and especially 3 are real bangers

StorytellerDave

Btw if you want to see the musical version of this episode, it's on youtube. This track contains no spoilers for the show. Helpless - by Cantata Pansophical Link (paste after youtube URL) watch?v=KWzAI30XWGU

Drake

the dragon they fought in season 1 was a YOUNG blue dragon (Challange level 9) and the team was all around level 9ish. these are three ANCIENT dragons CL 20+ (a red ancient dragon has one of the highest CL in game with level 24! Vox Machina in this arc was between level 11-16 so this is just a crazy engagement where they rly couldnt do anything but flee there is a famous scene from this episode where Grog attacks and his attack throll combined is 19 and matt goes "miss" and they are like WTF 19 missed WAAAAA lets run xD

Drake

not the best example. zebra and horses are the same family even the same equidae. considering the huge difference of dragons and wyverns i would argue they not that closely related i mean they dont even have the same numbers of limbs xD more like apes to monkeys

demonic-myst

Only in fantasy the word wyvern is fron wyrm ehich means dragon in old english

Jaylen gibbs

Jesus this is just kings landing time 10 😭
