It’s been a couple years since I watched this season, and I remember this episode well because it shows how evil characters like Askeladd can be and are offscreen. When you think about the level of respect Askeladd shows for men like Thors, a man who’d never commit a crime like this against another person regardless of consequences, you realize how coldly practical and resigned Askeladd is when faced with his actions as a Viking. There’s no joy in his work, only necessity.

SPOILERS !!!!!!!! They want an inch of hope but this show will take a mile of pain. They are still in for a RIDE

I have a question, you mentioned AOT for redemption of a character I’m just curious about how you would compare this to endeavors atonement in MHA ? Is there a difference or could askeladd still atone but not redeem himself ? Or something totally different !

mal

yeah this episode was horrible i genuinely felt pain for those ppl

The fact that her family dying and her living was because of her committing a sin (stealing), which can be taken in two ways is such good writing, it’s astounding. On one hand you can see it as she was saved by her crime and on the other hand her fear came through, she was left behind while her family was taken to heaven.

Yukimura (the author of Vinland Saga) draws hands really detailed and I love how they brought that to the anime. Animating such a beloved story from a very detailed manga is dangerous but the animators killed it. I can't wait for season 3 hopefully its taking so long so they can animate it just as well as season 1 and 2, this story deserves time and budget

robo

love the redemption conversation at the end of this episode!

Erin Ryan

I was thinking about Endeavor too. Reiner was just a child so it was easier to accept his redemption but Endeavor and Askaladd are adults and understand what their actions mean. Out of all of Askladds crew I think only Thorfinn can be redeemed

The sound design this episode is Emmy worthy. It’s so harsh, lonely, and cold, and the song at the end almost sounds like Anne’s ears ringing after witnessing such a traumatic event.

HBelmont67

Man, this episode is just a bummer, dude. 😥

HBelmont67

This episode MASTERS setting and tone. The dark and cold of winter is so palpable.

HBelmont67

The scene at the start with Atli and Torgrim asking the priest about the meaning of love is so interesting. I like how Askeladd's men are genuinely curious about such a foreign concept.

HBelmont67

This show would sooner break your finger than hold your hand. 😰

HBelmont67

To answer your question about sin during the discussion, the Bible says blasphemy against Christ is the one unforgivable sin. Like you said, other sins can be forgiven if you ask for forgiveness and repent.

HBelmont67

It's always either Reiner or Endeavor used as examples for "redemption," but I know one other that doesn't get talked about enough: Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He's someone who FULLY is against his former self and (minus murdering Winry's parents, which was portrayed more like a fit of rage than a calculated decision) he had pretty justified reason for his actions in the early part of the series. But the SECOND he saw himself as like the ones who wronged him, Scar redirected and started working on the side of good, and was instrumental in taking down the Alchemy Circle of Amestris. I feel like Scar redeemed himself, and in a much more concise manner than other similar characters.

Fun fact, in entire history of Christiannity, the concept of sins and hell is... really recent. It was widespread when royalty and clerical order started to grow in strength and influence as it was far easier to manipulate population through the fear of hell and eternal damnation to limit crime, but more importantly, to pay the Church for an almost garantied entry into Heaven. As for how sins can be absolved, it will depends on the era, redemption sometimes comes with a lifetime of struggle (creating some Saint in the process), other times it was as easy as to confess and "maybe" face trial if needed... and then there was the Holy Crusade where it was free for all if you join the war.

Very interesting conversation about redemption this episode. I'm really curious what you two will discuss with the rest of this season and season two. This is past the half way point, but in a way it really feels like the end of a part or just stands out within the series. It's hard to declare this episode as a "favorite", but it's very well done in what it presents

Erin Ryan

To redemption discussion, its interesting because Askladd hates Danes and knows what he is doing is completely wrong but still does it for the "noble" goal of protecting Wales

Vxder

Are “facts” things that we just make up now 💀

Vxder

I thought it was blasphemy against the Holy Spirit

Eric

Welcome to painland saga

For real bro, cuz u talking about England or what, Christianity started in the middle east at the time Christians were slutter, and then it was spread through preaching in Africa, the first church was made by Africans.

真嗣 • Shinji

This episode, to me, shows a real strength of VS, taking it slow and showing the gravity of the world they live in. having the MC not have any speaking lines for an entire episode

Ωmegax

Christianity as how it was used, in European countries, and some in the middle-east too didn't have the same concept for hell for a long time, even the word changed, and how it "works" or punished the "wicked" changed drasticaly. Afterall, before christianity, we need to look at it through the history of the abrahamic religions. Before any scripture and when it was only preached by words, the concept of Hell was far different, it's in the middle-age that it was used as a tool of fear to create a moral compass... before any writing, it is a way of living, a philosophy, a teaching about love, compassion without obligation, hell being more a state of mind, or state of the "soul". It then became a tool of control to add some mistranslation in its core, changing its course, new reasons to be considered sinful were added, even Hell as a *place* of torture is added in the New Testament, it wasn't considered as such in the Old Testament. That's why Hell, Sheol, Hades, Gehenna or any name we gave it was added as Christianity mixed some elements of its culture with Eurasian culture after the fall of the Roman Empire. It's really large and complicated, so I can't go on all the length of how or why or where, So sorry if I wasn't clear with my previous answer :)

HBelmont67

Same difference. If not, then what you said.

HBelmont67

Honestly, Thorfinn kinda stops being the main character for a bit in this latter half of season one.

Jinchuriki87

Bless yalls hearts going into this episode thinking it was going to be a positive episode 🤣🤣🤣

Erin Ryan

When rewatching I realized that season 1 is pretty much all world building and giving context to Thorfinns journey. He doesn't really develop much after Thors death, Askladd and Canute are what drives the plot forward. Obviously no hate it is a perfect prologue for this story

HBelmont67

Those poor saps 🥲

Catalin

The priest was so shocked about Thors because he didn't kill any of his enemies. The love that he's talking about is an unconditional love that Christ calls for us to have, which is to not just love thy neighbor and love those that we already care about, because that's easy to do, but he calls us to love thy enemy which is what Thors exemplified.

真嗣 • Shinji

I agree, which takes a lot of skill from the OG mangaka to pull of well (obviously, he did)

Mortis

So if I murder 3 people and then save 4 I’m a good person?

Mekar

I think the priest was shocked to hear of a Christ-like figure in the world he'd been walking around in. He had never heard the story of a man as great as Thors outside of the Bible. That can easily be a life-changing moment. Ann's reaction when talking to God at the end is the inverse. She's never heard a story of men as evil as Askeladd's band outside of the Bible. Surviving that is hopeful in a way. She has a direction to orient herself now. I think this is the hardest episode to watch in the series. There's rough episodes in both seasons but I don't think anything else in this series is as hard as a tied up village of Christians being slaughtered.

HBelmont67

Wdym "OG mangaka?" Did Vinland Saga change authors?

真嗣 • Shinji

Poorly worded English, sorry! I meant OG as in referring to the manga and the mangaka, compared to the anime

AyeJB03

To add on, blasphemy is an unforgivable sin because blasphemy is basically you saying to God “I don’t need you, screw you” . The Bible talks about pharaoh blaspheming God and how pharaoh hardened his heart at the idea of God and purposefully living against God. When you blaspheme God you are essentially hardening your heart, and it gives God no room to help you because God doesn’t force his help if you don’t want his help.
