Erin Ryan

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE

Mitty

Ayyy he fixed the title card

JaySpotTx

A fixed title card for THIS episode. Looking forward to this reaction from basically a first time commentor.

StorytellerDave

So glad I came back to Patreon just in time to catch this. Unfortunately I missed the questions but oh well.

BlueEyedRaven

I have to wait until I get home from work before I can see their trauma

Justin m

Mark strong who plays trent is Austrian and even Germans have said his accent is the best in the show so seeing you guys say he has a French accent is funny. I don't hear it lol

wanira 11

Oh boy, here we go

Letts React

IVE BEEN SAYING ITS GERMAN THIS WHOLE TIME I CANT WAIT TO TELL MONTANA

HBelmont67

Episodes 6-8 are still in there air

HBelmont67

After THIS episode, I think I can say with confidence that Liam O'Brien is the best voice actor in Critical Role. Absolute minimum, he's top three. 😵

wanira 11

"Is he gonna be framed for murdering his own family? Oh no it's so much worse

Erin Ryan

"I was just too caught up in the polyamory of it all" "Fair enough" I'm dying yall are hilarious

wanira 11

Also Montana is Dutch? How fun me too! Ik kom uit België, ik ga er van uit dat Montana familie heeft uit Nederland, wat ons buren maakt :)

StorytellerDave

Fun fact - Delilah Briarwood from Vox Machina used to have the same position that Trent Icathon has. Archmage of civil influence. After she was exiled from the Dwendalian Empire, Trent got her position.

Suplee215

My guess on the magic of this world (which is inspired by but different than dnd) is that caleb got enough components fornsome spells already gathered and not all need to be showed as obviously.

Geo23

Mark Strong, the voice of Trent Ikithon is actually English, but his mom is actually Austrian so he also speaks fluent German, he and the actor for Eadwulf are fluent German speakers.

HBelmont67

"WHAT'S A POON CLAP?!" 🤣🤣🤣 I freaking love Nott. On top of being Best Mom, she's funny as crap. 🤣

Erin Ryan

Calebs scream is one of the best pieces of voice acting I've ever heard

HBelmont67

I legit can't hear any French haha 🇫🇷❌

Suplee215

One easy to not realize detail here. Trent is the archmage of civil influence. Hes the guy in charge of all the empire's propaganda. He is in charge of helping make society have the values the empire wants them to have. The level of grooming Bren faced well before he ever met Trent is insane.

Erin Ryan

I just realized how simular the situations Thorfinn and Caleb are in

FelX

as a german, its not a french accent

HBelmont67

Thorfinn didn't cause the death of his family

wanira 11

He is absolutely fantastic

HBelmont67

Whoa whoa, hold on a minute. Trent is MARK STRONG?? Aka, Merlin, Sinestro, etc??

Geese

I definitely believe that Caleb can redeem himself, so long as he sticks with taking a new path forward, and I think this group will help him with that. He did some absolutely heinous things in his time under Trent, but he was also groomed from a young age into a very isolated culture of brutality centered around Ikithon. This episode is a doozy for sure, and definitely a dark tonal shift in already pretty tragic show, but also extremely well done. As for why Caleb was seemingly not using components, I think he was just doing it very quickly/off screen at times(outside of the flashbacks). We see him kind of shaking off the rust this episode as some of his old training starts to kick in when he is going after Owelia. I think a large part of what was holding him back before was his own mentality and guilt, but everything that happened with Owelia was so triggering it forced him back into his old mindset, brought up old memories, and probably pissed him off a lot. I think this episode is great, extremely well done, but I also understand that it is kind of a difficult watch just due to how visceral and graphic a lot of it is. I think it is good that they were explicit about just how horrible the things he did were because it shows how tight the grip Trent had on all of them was, and how far gone Bren had become. 11/10 episode and I think the liberties they took that kind of separated from the direct rules of DnD in certain spots served the story very well and were very well done overall. Hope you guys keep enjoying the show!

patricia jimjimcherie

Zemnian is technically based on an “archaic” form of German. The accent also is not French, it is very German lol. While I was born in Peru, my mother’s side of the family if French, and my dad’s is partially German (grandma’s side), and I’ve learnt a bit of both, plus I’m an interpreter so Im pretty good with languages.

Jon Wake

Just a few hundred other families.

Erin Ryan

I mean more that they were both child soilders that were manipulated by an adult and are now on the path of redemption. If you want compare butality Thorfinn was a warrior for way longer and definitely has killed way more people than Bren

HBelmont67

On the subject of accents, anyone know what Jester's is supposed to be? When she was asking Molly if he drinks blood, I thought she sounded Romanian, like Dracula.

Erin Ryan

Btw it was a different Volstrucker that was killed by the beacon

Erin Ryan

I watched! "BLOOD!!! MY BLOOD!!!" absolute chills. He also plays one of my favorite characters ever, Tenma from monster.

HBelmont67

Also Asura in Asura's Wrath. 💥

Westy

The "let me tell you a story" moment in the campaign was so jaw dropping. It happened after dozens of episodes so we were all used to Caleb and barely had any idea to his backstory. And boy, were the other players surprised. It's interesting seeing how they're rewriting the pacing story for the show.

Kalf97

See the volstrucker eating bugs i was like "you had so many options for spells you could specialize in and you chose the ones that involved EATING BUGS?!"

StorytellerDave

It actually happened pretty early in the campaign, but given each episode is 4 hours, it felt a lot longer

StorytellerDave

Vaguely Eastern European, it's not really a specific accent she just freestyled it and it felt right to Laura

StorytellerDave

Oh yeah, he is very impressive when it comes to conveying emotions. Matt Mercer is the king of sound effects though, nobody can beat him when it comes to just random eerily accurate noises.

zzsaturn

Laura, Liam and Travis are top 3 for me (followed by Ashley). They’re all incredible voice actors but those 3 in particular really reach levels of range and raw intensity that blows me away.

D Gai

Trents VA is Mark Strong. English actor with Austrian/German heritage. Fluent in German. A very German accent on this role. An amazing episode, the Caleb backstory was a huge moment in the campaign.

Mars

wasn't she Archmage of Antiquity ?

HBelmont67

Wonder what her maiden name is. 🤔

JaySpotTx

NGL, I was hype when I saw Mark Strong's name in the credits for an episode in TLoVM and I pieced together the connection once the casting for TM9 was announced. I was like HOLY SHIT it goes THAT far back.

Schlong Shucker

I agree, and tbh I feel like it’s sorta a representation of like they’re willing to do such deeply vile and sickening things for the big Ik

Westy

Haha k cool. Yeah I had a feeling I was exaggerating the numbers there because of the episode run times.

LuxLoser

That's literally perfect German from Trent LOL

HBelmont67

I know where they end up by the end of this episode, but the way Caleb halted Owelia in the test, complete with head pats, was sort of cute. 😂

Erin Ryan

I love nott calling jester jessie

HBelmont67

Same, it's super cute. Doesn't Fjord call her that, too? 😊

HBelmont67

Between wanting Jester to not believe in something he believes is imaginary to wishing Caleb a good and encouraged morning, Molly continues to be the GOAT of the Mighty Nein.

Braden Jackson

Man molly has to be my favorite character they all had a part to play in one of his worst days and he is still nice and helpful to all of them

Ellie

Idk, Ashley was utterly phenomenal in the last of us part 2

HBelmont67

They seem to be doing the same thing as Percy in Vox Machina season one.

Hunter

"Dad's not dead, just working on fences. I'm too used to tragic backstories at this point." Oh sweet summer child, BUCKLE UP

HBelmont67

They all say that . . .

Erin Ryan

The fact that trent purposely didn't turn off Brens fear and pain response

patricia jimjimcherie

I just finished the video, I was not able to earlier. We just got to a point in our campaign where my character had to reveal his background: groomed into a violent gang to try and protect his brother, he was good at it, at violence, until he got a mission where he had to kill two small children, and my character couldn't do it. He walked away. Someone else finished the job, and my character still went back to the gang. He was tortured, left to bleed out, a friend saved him in the nick of time, he ran away without being to send a word out to his brother, just with a bag, his coat, and a couple of coins. He found a dog in the middle of his trip south. My character had to come clean because his past is catching up to him and therefore the rest of tbe party. I literally started the narration with "i haven't been entirely honest with you, and you deserve to know, so, let me tell you a story." My party is pretty at odds with me right now, and it's pretty valid. I had to monologue and it was so nerve-wracking LOL Its funny because I'm sure my character's bg wasn't meant to be part of the main story, but I built SO MUCH around my character, his city, how it works, the gang, his growing up, everything and the gang just matched my DM's story that he's built it into the main plot. Caleb is one of my favorite characters in all of CR history. Liam and I have a predisposition to building sad boys.

StorytellerDave

Yeah, there's no main character of any campaign, but different arcs have different 'main characters'. Percy ofc with the Briarwoods is a good example. He takes a back seat in season 2 once his backstory is resolved. Caleb is treated much the same way, season 1 has a lot of his story because it was the first one that the Campaign explored, but we get to Fjord, Jester, Nott, etc... afterwards. Everyone gets their arcs.

Phantom Egg

I couldn't see anyone mention it so yes, the green crystal (residuum) enhances magic and in the game can be used in place of spell components. Caleb isn't revealing that he is more powerful than he lets on when you guys thought he stopped using components. Reminder that spell components include material as well as vocal and hand signs. Some spells are just hand signs, vocal, or both components. For example, when she spat the green goop at him and he cast shield. Shield is a verbal and somatic component spell.

StorytellerDave

I checked out of curiosity and it was episode 18 out of the 141 episodes, so yeah a bit later than in the show, but still pretty early all things considered.

Westy

Considering just how much goes on throughout the campaign, it makes sense for the reveal to have happened relatively early, yeah.

Robert Bonfante

He needed them to endure it to prove themselves worthy. A trial by fire... a coming of age ritual of the worst kind.

Robert Bonfante

Ah, the episode that gives Arcane. I felt a lot of emotions at the end of the episode when I first watched it and did on some level wonder if the show went too far. But Arcane has trained me well for this. I could be wrong but I believe that in the game Trent had a more active role in Caleb's manipulation -- somehow magically tricking Bren into killing his parents. But Critical Role decided to just have Bren do it more of his own free will on the show. It makes Trent's brainwashing and grooming just seem that much worse. On another tangent, I remember seeing the stats for a Volstrucker online. It seems like a prestige class -- like you have to have a number of high stats to become one. But it is a powerful class.

dannydarko27

If you feel this and Arcane are borderline too far never watch Berserk

dannydarko27

Sidenote: Where in VM Taliesin would lean into his trauma and go full no mercy Percy, here in MN Liam and Matt used a trauma mechanic. Anytime Caleb would kill someone with fire he had to roll to see if the PTSD took over and made him unresponsive. It was really heartbreaking to see it played out but even more so to see it animated. The way he reached his hand into the fire just to feel something, only to be saved by Nott. Man the tears

dannydarko27

The only reason I can see for people like Essek and Trent to do healing magic is that the show is not adhering to the og source as much as we think. Sure there are specific ways and circumstances that can make wizards have access to healing magic, we know that in Trents stats he never did in the source material. So even though it's fun trying to see how this holds up to an actual play, it's definitely its own thing now

HBelmont67

Arcane is not THAT dark

StorytellerDave

In the stream Trent planted false memories into Caleb that made him believe 100% that his parents are traitors, but honestly I don't think it makes a difference whether there's memories or just the word of the "King's spymaster giving a list of traitors". Caleb still made the choice himself, he wasn't forced into, just manipulated into it in both scenarios.

StorytellerDave

Honestly I headcanoned it as them not actually healing, but just covering the wound with an illusion. It kinda fits with the manipulative nature of Trent tbh and it makes sense for Essek to do it too, bc he can't go back with injuries and explain himself to Verrat or the Brightqueen.

真嗣 • Shinji

Vinland? Perhaps even double drop for these two? 🤞

Edda

“They wallow in the yak” LMAO

NevaraRaven

This was my favorite episode and will always be my favorite. Maybe it's ‘cause Caleb was my number one from day one of the campaign, but the side by side from this episode to the live play was also satisfying to watch. I would love for you guys to check out 'Table to Screen' moments in general, but this episode? With Caleb telling his story in game and the entire 'My Boy" speech? So great. Not story related whatsoever, but there was an inside joke for critters with a chair being in the middle of a room. It happened three times, and while the tragic story was being described, I could not stop giggling the first time I watched this episode. That’s just what happens when you have a party with terrible rolls trying to figure out why there is just a chair sitting in the middle of the room for 20 minutes.

Timothy Heck

I feel like patting the head of a gnome would be a microaggression or something LOL

Timothy Heck

What's wild to me is, we see with her final spell that apparently she just needs to crush the bugs. I guess she was chewing them earlier for...fun? I love her stank ass lol

Timothy Heck

I'd love if the fans curated a little playlist of spoiler-free table-to-screen videos for them to react to! (some happen at different times so they really gotta be checked for spoilers lol). I remember during the "he's my boy" speech, how wide Laura's went and you can see the gears shifting in their heads lol. And how big Liam's smile gets! It's really fun to see how many lines are pretty much word-for-word from the campaign!

Timothy Heck

Could be he took the Magic Initiate feat to get a cleric spell?

NevaraRaven

TP Burrow made a lot of Table to Screen videos for Vox and M9 and there is a playlist available on youtube! Though I really like scorchingmarisharay's "My Boy' comparison too.

Timothy Heck

This is neither here nor there but I started an episode on Prime to check something and accidentally had it set to Japanese. Maybe I'm a weeb but...it sounds awesome LOL. Love Nott's voice especially

StorytellerDave

I think the crushing and chewing are different spells. When she chews the maggots it is a poison gas/cloud, but when she crushes them it's more of an acid spit. It's gas vs liquid.

StorytellerDave

Well, there was that one family that found him injured and took him in...

HBelmont67

Funnily enough, Laura Bailey is in that same game.

HBelmont67

The transition from young Bren screaming from the crystal implants to Owelia in the present being burned was brutally perfect. 😬 This episode, in particular does parallels very well.

HBelmont67

Jester and Molly have such positive interactions in this episode. Funny how it compares to their Vox Machina counterparts, Vex and Percy. 🥰 But back on to Jester and Molly, are the lengths of a tiefling's horns based on their age, with Jester's being so much shorter than Molly's?

HBelmont67

I did not get the reference. 😅

HBelmont67

Beau: "I weirdly wanna beat his a**, but also . . . hug him right now." That's the Empire Siblings, for ya. 😁

StorytellerDave

I will say, I love that they take a more serious tone with this show than Vox Machina, but I do kinda miss some of the funniest scenes of the campaign, like Fjord disguising himself as an old man with alzheimers, or the syphilis bandits. Gosh the saga of the syphilis bandits is just one of the funniest things ever and I hope it gets added or referenced in some way in S2

StorytellerDave

Jester is the youngest member of the Nein afaik. Maybe alongside Beau, not sure where those two fall relative to each other

AuroraZero_

I cant believe I totally forgot to watch your reaction to this episode! I was so excited! Lol Also I love the "ok its fine, im just so used to tragic backstories" ...like oh boy Kenny, are you in for one lol

AuroraZero_

I also feel it might be a subtle nod to Daggerheart, bc the Wizards in that do have access to healing magic!

SWTobito

Montana insisting that Trent is speaking with a French accent even while he's speaking what essentially surmounts to flawless Hochdeutsch is absolutely ragebaiting me as a German. No self respecting German oughta have their accent compared to French.

HBelmont67

Haha, yeah, "framed" 😬
