If you'll excuse me, I need to call my mom. 🥺

HBelmont67

"That's optimistic." "Maybe this'll have a wholesome ending." Ohhhh dear, this is going to be harder than I thought . . .

Daran Tung

I mean this episode is the perfect example of what makes Dandadan a truly amazing anime

HBelmont67

This definitely changed people's opinions on the series and made them take it more seriously. 😔

123anaya14

I hate I'm old enough to know what untamed and uncut is

Ksweets

now you guys have experienced the true emotions of dandadan

Babybear47

Devistating indead but also beautiful in other ways and sad! Me: every episode feeling the emotions in every anime I've watched!..

David Garcia

I always feel it important to mention, the acrobatic silky backstory was like.. ONE, maybe TWO pages in the manga. Science Saru took the smallest, quickest possible source material and CRUSHED people’s hearts with it. I can not give them enough flowers for this episode, and it deserves its place as the highest rated for the series.

Unfortunately what we see at the end is the mom and daughter star gazing in heaven basically confirming the daughter died possibly of organ trafficking, it's never brought back into the story and we only know cause of manga cards. But at the same time it's nice knowing that she was able to make it to heaven and see her daughter instead of disappearing into the void.

starcityneko

the collective devastation of the fandom when this episode dropped 😭 “oh boy i’ve had such a shitty week time for my comedic relief show!” *gets shot 57 times* such beautiful animation, and it adds so much depth to spirits as a whole. previously we’d only dipped our toes in the “traumatic death to angry spirit pipeline” with turbo granny and the implications of the girls in the tunnel but turbo granny is kind of a shithead (affectionate) so the point isn’t driven home as easily as with acrobatic silky. i cri evrytiem 😭 thank you guys for the episode, can’t wait for the next!!💜

StarOfTheZanarkandAbes

Sadly it's implied her daughter didn't survive, after she was taken from her mum she is presumed dead, the manga shows it much clearer but when Aira says "Please, take away their pain, grant them peace, guide them both to a kinder world" its insinuating they are both in the afterlife together now, in the manga it shows them holding hands after her passing to solidify the idea even more.

HBelmont67

I feel like Turbo Granny would eat her words if she'd seen Acro-Silky's past the way Momo and Aira had. She's empathetic to situations like hers. 😔

HBelmont67

It's much more explicit in the manga, but that gorgeous dance sequence of Acro-Silky pirouetting under the stars? That was her throwing herself off a roof . . .

Swanzy

To this day, that still haunts me. Such a tragic ending. And how she has to sell herself to get the money to pay of the loanshark but she wants to also buy the dress for her daughter on her birthday with that money 😭😭

HBelmont67

Not only that, but for the director of this episode, this was his DEBUT.

HBelmont67

The true mastery of this episode is the wordless storytelling. Not a THING is told to us about Acro-Silky and her daughter's situation, but we can gleem everything we need to know from the visuals.

HBelmont67

So, as if this weren't enough trauma already, we just got a new teaser for season two of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners coming this fall. 😫

AJ Hutchinson

I personally think that it's implied Acro- Silky was involved with Human trafficking/ sex work.

Big Jebby

The music man... it just kills me every time

Gestrid

The mom was involved in certain "work" that involved staying with a man who paid enough money for her at night. She would arrive home to take care of her daughter during the day. She wanted to give her daughter a gift for her birthday and started taking money from her night job that was supposed to go to the person she owed money to (not a reputable person in the least), her employer, and bought her daughter the dress. However, her employer found out and broke in to take the money. He took her daughter as a "replacement" for her and left her for dead. And so... the mom, after losing her daughter, gave her daughter a final gift: a beautiful dance on the rooftop in the rain... before jumping off it. However, her daughter ended up getting a piece of shrapnel in her during the fight and passed away shortly after. And, when Aira stepped forward to sooth Acrobatic Silky's regrets, mom and daughter were able to reunite in the afterlife, as we see them looking up at the stars from their balcony. I hope that gives you all some closure. Hug your loved ones. You never know what might happen next.

Gestrid

It does have a wholesome ending, of a sort. Thanks to Aira, mom and daughter (who had thankfully passed away due to a piece of shrapnel in her body; better that than the alternative) were able to reunion in the afterlife, as we see them looking up at the stars from the balcony.

Gestrid

From what I heard, she died from a piece of shrapnel she got in her during the fight.

HBelmont67

Mother and daughter reuniting in death is more bittersweet than anything, but I hear you. 🥲

Rob Carlstrom

As an reader of the DanDaDan manga i truly love how it really always hammers home how ghosts arent there because they had a GOOD life, they were people who have unreolved business and that is a tragedy into of itself

Graham

I remember watching this with my wife and brother in law before heading to a party at our friends’ house. Showed up looking shit, running makeup, everyone asking “oh my god are y’all alright?!” 😂 “Yeah, we’re okay, you just don’t understand- we just watched a really good anime.”

Craig Payne

I'm almost wondering if Turbo Granny was well aware of the back story, or could sense the trauma similar to the young girls of the location bound spirit, and everything she said and her dismissive attitude was specifically to prompt Aira to take action.

Craig Payne

That's impressive, especially with the expectation of something dark looming, the number of "fake outs" in the sequence: has the mother fallen ill and unconscious on the floor? No, she's just pretending to sleep. The freeze on the photo, for a moment suggesting something happened, but no, it's just so we can see a wall of photos. The cut to black signifies something bad, right? No, it's just a birthday cake with candles. All the rising and falling tension means that the actual tragic scene really hits so much harder.

David Garcia

I did not know this was a director debut episode, that’s actually insane. Holy portfolio entry Batman

Graham

This is the secret of Dandadan. 90% of the time it’s an incredibly sweet and off the wall comedy shounen with strong romance and character writing. The remaining 10% will absolutely fucking destroy you. There is more like this, this series is actually about stuff like this, if anything. I think the main emotional through-line is about healing, moving on, not letting hate erase love. Shounen can be pretty schmaltzy sometimes, there’s a type of anime earnestly that just hits the ear wrong, but Dandadan always manages to avoid that with brutal emotional honesty, a delicate and considered approach (hell, it’s artistic) to incredibly serious trauma, and rock-solid character work. I’ll also add something my wife said after reading a bunch of the manga. While it’s not always the focus, a LOT of thought and effort goes into depicting and interrogating the types of gendered violence women face. This is a series that is very invested in dealing with that, from a variety of different angles and with many different characters.

HBelmont67

The whole concept of how yokai work in this universe is with spirits who haven't found peace and can't move on to the afterlife. Now we see why . . .

Graham

I love the narrative synchronicity of Acro Silky and Aira’s experiences here. They both give each other a form of closure and emotional validation. On Silky’s part, she essentially directly shows Aira, in first person, the type of incredible love she felt for her daughter, the same love that Aira’s mother must have felt for her. And for Aira’s part, she was able to tell Silky, from experience, that no matter how short their life together was, no matter the circumstances of its end, her daughter was still the happiest she could’ve been, just by being with such a loving and wonderful parent. It’s just really fucking good writing, plain and simple. And it’s all set against that beautiful animation and music, which is juxtaposed with the shocking brutality. I think it was Noah Caldwell Gervais who coined the term “emotional chiaroscuro,” which I think is very appropriate here. And it’s one of the finest examples of it I can think of.

LuxLoser

That's why she was so mean. Granny is clearly an empathetic and sweet person at her core. She's just bitter after seeing a lot of awful things, so she uses insults and flippancy to distance herself emotionally.

Z C

Sorry guys This episode is a cannon event

wanira 11

Goddammnit I actually bawled rewatching this. Aira's empathy at the end was just so so beautiful

tatakai

I remembered bawling my eyes out when I first watched it in Japanese, and I didn't think the English version would get to be me but damn was I wrong

Juan Solo

Shrapnel? Was that in the manga?

Juan Solo

Only hearing her body hit the ground, but not seeing it, somehow haunts me more.

Tyler

This is the episode that made me fall in love with this show, what a powerful story told in just 20min

Juan Solo

Trauma Team isn't saving us this time... well, they didn't save us last time either.

HBelmont67

I read the manga, and this is the first I've heard of it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Juan Solo

Little Aira: "I'll grow up to be someone she's super proud of!" This might explain why Aira is/was so full of herself. Even though she's older now and understands her mom isn't coming back, Aira at her core wants to be someone her mom could be proud of. Her way of doing that is by inflating her own pride.

Juan Solo

He definitely hit the home run.

HBelmont67

You simply can't look at Aira's character the same way after this incident.

HBelmont67

So about little Aira seeing Acro-Silky: it's a combination of their shared grief as a daughter and a mother, as well as a belief in Japan that children inherently have more of a spiritual awareness than adults.

dannydarko27

I had to wait for this upload to watch the last because this 2 parter is so damn good. The way the set up the yokai as terrifying just to break you with this one. Too good

Manuel

Btw in case it wasn’t obvious, in the scene where acrobatic silky is dancing after losing her daughter is just her doing her last dance before jumping off a building, that’s how she died

dannydarko27

I always thought it was just the fact that she was a child and children are often more susceptible to apparitions, but the shared grief/trauma makes so much sense. She didn't understand why her mother was gone but she knew she was sad about it, and Silky was already losing herself in said grief

HBelmont67

Castlevania 3x3 is gonna be late cause they don't appear to have watched it, yet.

Bread&Jam Reacts

That is exactly what happened when I watched this episode. Had a shitty day and was excited to watch Dandadan, cried hysterically, then promptly had to take a break from the show for like a week. Cried again watching them watch it, even before the sad part came. 😭

Tyreek Wanamaker

I'm surprised they didn't catch on to all the prostitution.

Tyreek Wanamaker

also, the turbo granny episode was also very tragic in a similar way. a theme I see developed in this show, and why I push back on ppl not watching it because of some of the early sexualization pieces, is that yokai seem to be manifestations the victimized and seek to protect the victimized, especially victims of sexual assault abuse and coercion in a way I don't think I've seen in modern anime. its the first anime I've seen that seems to outright be calling out the sexualization that we see in the medium

Jonathan

The subtle ways they show the mom's side job is so well done in the opening sequence of the flashback. First is the sound of a shower running while she's still in bed, then there's a timer going off instead of an alarm clock, and finally the stop light. The direction in that whole flashback is just so amazing.

MaSeshield9277

If you guys loved this episode, plz you *HAVE* to watch link click.

Roy Meulblok

Every time I watch this episode my stomach just twists and knots.

KingPin

Wait!! Why am I just now crying about this episode? When I first saw it I didn’t shed a tear but now all of a sudden it’s hitting me? DAMN YOU!!!!!!😢

Tark Reacts

This episode first came out only a few weeks after my mother passed away. Absolutely brutal, still is.
