I do think the slap was partly a mercy. Lady Lauhau took full control of tbe situation and punishment. By making the scene she did no one can ignore that she handlee the situation. So further punishment beyond the banishment will be to question Lady Lauhau's authority. And if the emperor got to punish her instead, thats an execution if not worse. Remember, the conspiracy to murder one of the top concubines was considered treason in season 1 and ended with everyone who did vusiness with that handmaiden's family being fired. With Lady Lauhau being her cousin it probably wouldnt have the same exact outcome but tbis could bring a lot of conquence to her family outside the rare palace plus get her cousin killed. That slap was so much more impactful than the physical hit

I’ve always loved how Gaoshun, Jinshi, and Maomao all looked shocked when Lihua slapped Shin as if one of her very first scenes in the show wasn’t her slapping Gyokuyou hehehe like Lihua has no qualms with getting physical ESPECIALLY when she’s of the belief someone wishes to cause harm to her child

I can actually confirm that at least through Maomao’s POV Shin was being given a mercy: “Shin still hadn’t recovered from the slap. Did she understand the mercy she was being shown? …. Personally, Maomao thought Lihua was being a bit soft, but let us consider what humiliation this treatment must have brought to such a proud woman.” LN3, chapter 11 Lihua has had so much go wrong in her life as a result of her cousin’s resentment towards her, and yet she still offered her one act of mercy as a parting gift

Her life was spared so thars as much of a mercy as killing an emperor's son can get

A lot what what maomao says isn't always said out loud, we hear her inner monologue a lot.

Indeed. It's a harder to tell on dub since with subtitles they usually put them in italics to indicate an internal though, but I think there is a slight reverb added to her voiceover instead. Mostly you kind of just need to watch her mouth to know if she's just thinking it or actually saying it aloud

Oh hey Maomao got herself some whiskers! Maybe not the best way though...
