Hello everyone and welcome to a new development blog.

Before we get back to Tribals faction expanded, I'd like to outline what's coming in one of our more enigmatic mods.

Vanilla Races Expanded - Archons is on the horizon, and work on it is almost finished. We have decided to push this Dungeons and Dragons inspired mod a little further, adding a lot of cool connections to Archotechs - after all, Archons are the first xenotype not created directly by humans.

Vanilla Races Expanded - Archon introduces a brand new, mysterious xenotype of dimension-travelling warriors. Inspired by the very similar race in Dungeons and Dragons universe, Archons inhabit the space between dimensions. Not much is known about them, as they are the first xenotype not actually created directly by humans. It is believed that Archons are a xenotype created by some Archotech from all the humans that remained on the transcendent worlds.

They excel in combat, and they despise everyone that isn’t part of their xenotype. They look different than humans, wear archotech gear and use powerful psycasts that are exclusive to them. They are incredibly psychically-sensitive and have new abilities that enhance their psychic prowess.

This mod will introduce new archite genes, considering how archite-focused the xenotype is.

These four new archite genes provide Archons with never-before-seen abilities. Transcendent gene will give archons access to a brand new psycaster path described below, but it will also make Transcendent colonists immortal in some meaning of this word. While they can still die, instead of leaving a corpse, they 'skip out' to another dimension. They get fully healed and may return after some time has passed.

Natural Psylink gene will make all archons capable psycasters, and paired with Extremely Psy-Sensitive, they will be essentially psycasting powerhouses - with a lot of extra psychic sensitivity and meditation psyfocus gain, you will always be able to count on them when it comes to psycasting.

Leapjump legs will allow them to close the distance to the enemy with a powerful leap that deals damage to anyone around the landing point.

Extremely aggressive is a gene that will nicely balance them out. Not going to lie - it's quite bullshit. Not only they will always social fight if someone slights or insults them, they will also use their melee weapons when social fighting. Heads will roll.

Four new combat-related genes are also added. Archons are very slow at ranged attacks and take a while to aim, but they excel in melee combat thanks to Fast Melee hitter.

Three new meditation genes affect how long meditation takes. Archons utilise the Extreme meditation, granting them a further 50% meditation psyfocus gain on top of their Extremely Psy-sensitive archite gene.

Three new psychic heat-related genes are also present. Archons sport the High Entropy Capacity gene, giving them 25% increase to the max amount of psychic entropy, allowing them to cast more psycasts before overheating.

Maniac gene makes all Archons psychopaths.

Leatherskin is a new body graphic gene that gives Archons increased armor, both sharp and blunt, making them more resilient.

Some new pregnancy genes and childhood genes are also present. Archons take twice as long to give birth, but their children are capable of various jobs much earlier than other xenotypes.

Some new cosmetic genes make archons stand out next to other xenotypes.

Archoblades are our new, very powerful bladelink weapon accessible only to those with Transcendent genes. They utilise a new damage type called Sear, which ignored any armor on the enemy, and is guaranteed to leave scars, even if treated in time. These weapons are just as devastating against mechanoids as they are against humans.

Furthermore, with Vanilla Psycasts Expanded, each archoblade also acts as a sort of Psyring, enabling a random psycast to be cast if the user also has a psylink.

This means that enemy archons may use virtually any psycast in a raid against you.

Archoplate is a new armor adorned by the Archons. It provides great boosts to Psychic sensitivity, but it also generates a very, very strong barrier in a small radius, meaning that you need to get into melee range to fight archons, and as you've seen with the other genes, they excel in melee combat.

A new psycaster path with only four new psycasts is available to those with Transcendent genes. Shortskip will allow archons to teleport past your defenses. Psychic throw is an ability that sends out blunt projectiles that deal little damage, but depending on the Psychic sensitivity of the caster, there may be many, many projectiles fired at many different targets in each burst. Every 50% Psychic sensitivity sends out an additional projectile.

Psychic warp is a great ability that temporarily strips out the armor of the targets. Similar to Psychic throw, there may be numerous projectiles fired in each burst.

When a psychically warped target is hit by Psychic throw, a small detonation will occur, damaging everyone in radius and ending the psychically warped effect.

Psychic lance is a huge, slow travelling projectile that may be fired over walls. Anyone caught in the explosion radius of it will be chaos skipped around, with some sharp damage dealt to them. Great for breaking up large blobs of enemies.

One more thing isn't covered by the infographics above, and that is the Archon raid, which can only occur during a very rare Psychic storm. All I can say is this: When Psychic storm happens, best hunker down.

Let me know what you think!

This looks epic I can't wait!!

im not really that enthused by using the githyanki here personally, wouldve rather something more technological for archons. the xenotype mechanically is really cool but definitely doesn't feel like githyanki.

Interesting! Although, the psychopath gene giving 4 metabolism is rather... Let's just get out with it, it's OP as fuck, people _want_ psychopaths in their colonies and not only does it not cost you, it _gives_ you metabolism efficiency. 4 no less! Oh well, while balance is just not present, it's is fun! For the specific xenotype I mean, because psychopaths won't like other people due to social interactions and thus they won't like them back as much, which causes them to insult them which causes the insulter to die

This looks *really* cool. A few minor nitpicks: - The transcendent gene is really cool. Could it be split up in multiple subgenes though? One for the psycast, one for the 'resurrection' and one for the gear availability to be more modular? - The legs LOS skip is very similar to their psycast. I'd personally replace the legs (as it feels very 'corporeal' compared to their transcendent nature) in favour of more psycast goodness. - I really like the transcendent tree, I wish it'd be a fully integrated tree with more abilities though that are limited to 'elder' archons adding an element of progression. I like the idea of the pseudo-ressurection. Would be cool to combine it with 'typical' antagonists in Xcom2/Shadow of middlearth style where the same group of 'rival-archons' would keep appearing and you'd have to defeat them many times in order to have a chance to truly defeat/recruit them.

An Kangaroo

Super cool work and am really excited to see what more the team will cook up. Love how the Archons are becoming something more than glitterworld, ultratech and instead their own thing with unique items and abilities. One thing I wonder doe is: do you and the team plan to implement a scenario where you play as one or a few archons? and then how will you balance that in a way it feels fun and also ”lore friendly” (not breaking imerssion about them being dimension hoping demi-gods)

Muronelkaz

I like the idea of Archeotech creating or controlling agents for the universe similar to Starborn, since I don't know the lore of the Githyanki. Both however have 'ships' I think that they use for transportation across space so should there be a psycast/vehicle/permit that gives them that ability or is that feature creep?

wilfredo retamal

Do they have any negative thoughts about non-"gith"? Like a permanent hated xenotype or something similar? Are they able to gain other xenogenes as other races? Are you adding more genes, or this is it for the mod?

John Labuda

Really interesting! However, I'm not super in love with not being able to use their gear...or not getting anything at all for fighting them considering its a huge risk. Since they probably teleport onto the map, do they leave something like eltex behind so you at least get something for fighting them since its going to be a tough fight?

Félix Dubois

While I like the concept, not a fan of using the Giths here. I would've preferred something more unique.

Cr0ssley

Ah, so what I'm hearing is this is like the Rift events in Total War: Warhammer III

TheFirstLuka

This looks really cool! But is this replacing VFE Archotech?

Phraxius

Psychic melee-fighters that skipgate onto the map? Very different - in a good way. I look forward to seeing it play out in practice. Are there any unusual mechanics tied to their capture and possible recruitment, aside from the "disappear on death" part - and them being homicidally insane little gremlins?

sk4p3g04t

Weren't sanguophages also made by archotechs?

The Gaming Archaeologist

Loving the look of this new race and I'm sure I'm not the only one that'd be attempted to bring them into the colony.

noddistVitae

Will the archite genes be passed down to their children?

The_F

I really like the concept of the new Archon Xenotype. Though I have to admit, I stillt have to warm up with the idea of seeing Giths in Rimworld. I think they are the least favourite Race in BG3 for a reason ;-)

Big Barza

Looks like the kind gene is gonna be even stronger if one manages to capture an Archon. Keyword, manages. On that note, is the skipbarrier really impenetrable with ranged? As in, actually permanent.

Dimitry Minchenkov

Interesting. Is it possible that we will see Alpha storyteller one day? Also: warp detonating from throw? I see what you did here! And I still miss Rim-effect updates, even though I know the reasoning for the... hiatus.

aybys

Weren't Sanguophages made by Archotechs too? I think the lore was some explorer guy tried to mess with an Archotech and got transformed. That would be a cool aspect to explore if you ever make a Sanguophage faction mod, or could explore with Lycanthropes who could be from a rival Archotech or something. Anyways love the concept for this one. The swords look awesome.

Matthew

A cool mod, I do think though, that in combining the Gith and Archotech you kind of lose the unique feel of both. The Archotech weapons beings swords wastes the potential intrigue the Archotech relics have in the base game. it could be explained that the world the people are from was medieval, but still feels weird. Ideally Archotech equipment should be alien in form, they should be strange things that do space magic. Technology even a fraction as advanced as the relics would still be as different to modern equipment as a car is to a horse, something like floating rings that form skip gate to the center of pulsars shooting out solar radiation, etc. I also think in being Archotech, the Gith lose a lot of their strange culture that makes them so interesting, although this might just be because i haven't played with the mod

High elf vibes ✨️🫠

Allen

As someone who has not delved into making mods for this game, how does the game treat separate items with the same name? Is it like Morrowind/Skyrim, where each item has an individual internal ID? I ask, because I've seen another mod that adds an archoblade, and I'm wondering if there's a risk of conflating the two items.

Eternity Fell

I'm super excited to see a Gith-inspired race make its way into the game. Doubly excited to get some more dread hairstyles! Thank you for all your hard work!

Dick Turnip

Hm. Do the short pregnancy/early maturity genes stack with growth vats (i.e. can they be used to accelerate clone generation)? Very interesting implications for colony development if so.

Qualli

Looks so great :) Is there a possibility to integrate the Archons in the Archonexus ending? Maybe like Archon raids when doing research on the Archonexus.

SirRetinee

Getting mad Protoss vibes from these guys and i'm here for it.

Ian Napier

What does the Trancendent gene do to permanent injuries? It says unscathed so I’m guessing it just removes them.

Theo

Super excited for this mod, can't wait for a mercenary colony made of hussars, archons and drell

G-Fiti

Looks super cool. Pretty nice adaptation of the gith, woul'dnt have minded if they lay eggs as well

TheConeezeanEmperor

Kind of curious, is Rim Effect going to come back at some point?

Con

These guys seem like they're gonna be a real bastard to deal with. Can't wait! :D

Liara Jennings

Space elves. Bastard asshole space elves. Noice! :D
