It’s been a long time since I drew a self portrait! I’ve definitely been through a lot since then. My health took a nosedive and I got sick so many times, and I also went through a really rough time for my mental health which led to many aspects of my life coming to a standstill. I even had a flare-up of my arm injury which I hadn’t had for years - It took a whole month to recover from that. It was a humbling experience but weirdly enough, I’m grateful for all of it. It led me to making some much-needed changes that have made me a happier person overall. I would have never been able to figure out how to get there without these experiences!

I feel like this self portrait is a more honest one than previous ones I did. As with my previous ones, this one was drawn from life with a mirror as my reference. I started out just drawing myself the way I always do, but I felt like the painting was lacking expressiveness. I usually feel quite tense about painting myself because I have a really conflicted relationship with my own appearance and I could really see that in my first attempt. So I started over and tried to make one that showed more of who I am right now - tired, but willing to look myself directly in the eye.

I also had an urge to leave my left eye as just a dot, but I am not sure about that one. I think it has a bit of a creepy effect that I didn’t entirely intend. So in the images, you can find the dot-eye version as well as the original self portrait that I abandoned! I hope you like these!

It’s so beautiful. I’m so mesmerised by your art! I don’t know how you do it💕 and you are beautiful, it’s so sad how so many people feel conflicted about their appearances, I myself included. But it’s important to remember who tf you are and own it, which you are clearly doing💕

Yesterday, when I saw your storys, I actually thought you weren't going to paint the secound eye 😅. Glad that at the end you did, it it looks amazing 👏

Ah, so many wonderful things about this! It looks gorgeous and painterly; I also love how you talk about challenges being helpful for our growth, thank you for this reminder! It’s sometimes hard to see in the moment but so so important to remember. I’m also so happy you decided to do a second attempt. It looks so expressive! It’s really inspiring and so is the honest emotion you infuse your paintings and writing with. Thank you for all you do and share!! ❤️✨💫

Congratulations! It's beautiful! (‘it’ or you?) I actually also like that abandoned sketch! I already have confronting problems with the mirror at the hairdresser. So I’ve never dared to draw a self-portrait. Good to read that you talk about your health problems in the past. That usually means that you're in a better place now. Keep it up and avoid the pitfalls. 🤜

The dot eye was probably giving more Coraline vibes than you intended ^_^U But this came out so perfectly! I always admired the likeness you managed to get in your old attempt, but you absolutely nailed it this time. We’re all so proud of the person and artist you’ve become over the years 💕

You have been a a busy girl in August, and I have a hunch there’s more to come. Lovely piece thanks for sharing a shard of you.

I think this is my favorite self-portrait of you honestly. Like you said it feels more expressive and real. I never managed to make a good likeness of myself, maybe it's time to try again :)

I love these! I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. Especially because it’s helpful to know that even someone I find very physically beautiful and effortlessly cool AND beyond skilled in illustration has the same struggles with their appearance. It helps me to remember to give myself some grace for having the same feelings and also to remember we are all beautiful and deserve to feel good about ourselves. Thanks for all you put out into the world! It is endlessly helpful in so many ways.

A very honest feeling portrait. The gaze is so sincere, and I feel your tiredness too. There’s something so special about a self portrait that references a mirror instead of a photo. It’s like an extended meditation of sorts.

Such a gorgeous piece I love seeing the way your art has changed over time the difference from the last one you did to this! (Chefs kiss) I’ve noticed your art just feels so much more cozy recently is that something you’ve done deliberately or just sorta happened?! Anywho I love it!♥️

To quote Rooster from Top Gun Maverick... You look good [Loish.]

I love these! I think you’re able to capture yourself well, despite the self image issues you’ve mentioned in the post. Do you have any tips on to how to look at yourself with fresh eyes? I struggle seeing my features objectively and always end up with a caricature of myself at best, and something totally unrelated at worse 😅 I haven’t tried straight up using a mirror though; always with pictures! + my face smiling is a total stranger from the serious one 😭
