It's time for this month's tutorial, which is on stylizing anatomy! In many ways it also touches on the topic of stylization in general, so I think this is a useful video for anyone who is cultivating their style - but especially for those of you who are trying to figure out how to get away from realism when drawing characters and figures! There are a bunch of tutorials I've made which form excellent companions with this one. Here's a list:

Warmups & exercises for improving your skills: This is a tutorial I mention quite a lot in this video, because it talks about the basic principle behind making focused studies. This is a great technique for training yourself to stylize and exaggerate your art!

Constructing a pose: This one does a deeper dive into the shapes I use to construct a pose and also discusses rhythm, gesture, and other important principles for drawing poses.

Overlapping shapes & foreshortening: This one talks about how I overlap shapes to create depth and 3-dimensionality in my art.

Drawing different body types: This one takes the principle of changing the size and shape of the basic construction shapes to create different types of bodies.

The brush I used was the MaCaLabs HB pencil brush: http://cbr.sh/fg8up?ref=loish

As always, here is the cheat sheet with essential information from the tutorial, which you can also find attached to this post as a PDF file with clickable links:

And here is the outcome of the demo:

I hope you enjoy this one! Feel free to share any future tutorial suggestions in the #tutorial-suggestions channel in the discord server (If you don't know how to join, just follow the steps outlined here) or leave them in a comment below! Thanks so much ❤

Came at the perfect time, omg!🤍🫣

Thank you for this!! I feel like my anatomy is a bit stiff, I want it to look more fun 🥺

I think I did a mistake in the past. I never learned how to do anatomy I just started creating characters and different poses and shapes of their body. I just learn it by looking of different character. Other people do and that's how I learn it. I never just sit there and read a book or just watch video about how to draw a anatomy

I love listening to your voice and the way you explain and tell things. It's really enjoyable to see your video tutorials!! And something that makes me really happy of this video, it's that this makes me realize the knowledge I already have. But being said with another point of view reinforce it. Also, it's very interesting the way you focus on things, it switch a spark in my mind. I rememeber that some years ago I didn't know what meaned a stylizated style...until that, with time, I understood it wasn't a specific style, but a way to enhance and simplify the world throught our imagination. I found myself thinking how stylizating the reference you used, and then you show some of the things I focused. Also it made me very happy you made a reference of GRIS, because its one of my favourites games and I studied the different style in near/far camera precisely for doing a concept art. Definitely, this was a very entertaining and useful. I liked it a lot

So amazing,so inspiring! I did not draw for such a while because we are moving with the whole family plus the kids do not sleep well at night and so do I,but this really motivated me to come back to draw ,just a bit, and to translate it to landscapes, because I am more into environments. It gave me the little kick to come back to myself, and it was highly effective in quickly re-exploring what I love to intensify. Just an hour on the sofa with your inspiration - so helpful. Thank you ❤️

Awesome sauce and thank you! Can't wait to look at this in depth later when I have time. Love the bumble bee energy it seems to be giving :)

Breakdown complex things in simple shapes is really what took away my fear of drawing. It's not always easy to get it right but at least we have a base to work on. I really love this tutorial, some nice tips in there ✨

Thank you so, so much for your amazing tutorials (and really all of your content and effort here on patreon, it's so inspiring)! I love how in depth they are and the way you explain and show examples is one that really works for me in terms of actually understanding it and being able to implement what I've learned in my own art, which isn't often the case. I usually struggle a lot with longer, more detailed tutorials, I get bored and/or distracted very easily - most likely due to my ADD - and after watching like 10 of your videos I noticed that this happened a lot less. I'm learning so much here and I really can't thank you enough! Not only are you a fantastic artist, you're also a wonderful teacher! 💜

Finally got around to watching this one, perfect timing! I'm working on a stylized character for my game and it was something I was a bit stumped on. GRIS is actually a huge inspiration for the game as well, so I was excited to see it used an example :)

Oh wow Barachan, I haven’t heard that name in 20 years. Every time you talk about the oekaki days I get really nostalgic =)

Thank you so much! Another amazing tutorial and exactly the reason I joined your patreon. I was praised by my parents for so long whenever I did anything super realistic. But it's never been what I'm drawn to. And I'm so bored! I was to be more expressive but don't know how. This is so inspiring. Also thanks for breaking some "rules" that my professors would always say. Your honest and mindful approach to creating art is so refreshing and genuinely more helpful than anything I learned in college.

Oh my gosh this is the first tutorial that’s helped my brain understand 😭😭 thank you so much

One question, do you offer the brushes?

Sneha

"Hi Loish, I recently bought the Macalabs_sketching brushes for Photoshop v1.2 from Gumroad, thinking they’d work in Procreate too, but the file format is TPL. Do you know if there’s a way to convert them? I haven’t been able to reach their support. Also, have you come across their brushes for Procreate? I could only find ones for Photoshop. Thank you!"

Robert Skibiński

Thank you! It was very inspirational for me in photographing movement and how to compose frame to focus on movement and look for leading lines ❤️

Abby

Extremely helpful as always, Loish! I've been struggling with anatomy lately, so this tutorial was a pleasant surprise. However, I'd like to ask what your go-to websites/profiles are for when you need help finding anatomy references. I've been looking around for some but haven't found too much, and I'd like to know if you have a few suggestions! :)

I'm such a fan of your content! It's extremely helpful. 💓

this was so helpful, i'm decent at anatomy but i've always avoided poses because i found measuring ratios and perspective was difficult... but stylizing + breaking down into shapes makes it so much fun and easier! thank you loish, really loving ur tutorials so far <3

Bo Vj

hey loish i m a flame patreon and i m not sure how to downled it, i can donlowed at right? if not sorry for the quistion

The question: “Why stylize anatomy”? Is important to me. Very happy to see this video😍❤️. Much more freedom when you draw expressive figures….as opposed to traditional figure drawing and painting. I admire traditional figure painting and (portraiture)….but (in my opinion) there is far more energy conveyed ( and ? excitement/——>visual interest) when the human figure is exaggerated or altered. A much more———fun way to create drawings & paintings. Really enjoyed seeing this video.😌

i became a patron just for this video and it did not disappoint!! i've been struggling so hard with stylization, especially when it comes to using a reference for poses. i find myself drawing it more realistically and it looks fine but its not what i want so i wind up feeling disappointed in my art anyway lol i'm really excited to try these exercises out and check out the other tutorials as well! (i was also really stoked to see you mention the styles that have thicker legs and arms because i've ALWAYS loved that and wanted to incorporate it into my own style so it was great seeing that here!!) thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial! 💜

I want to watching this character process
