This month's tutorial is about creating emotive art! It's basically about how I channel emotion into my work, and also talks about different ways that you can put the focus on emotive themes in your own art. It is not about drawing expressions - that's a different topic that I covered in my constructing faces & expressions tutorial - but more about how you can get a stronger sense of mood and emotion in your artwork!

The brushes I used were the MaCaLabs HB pencil brush for sketching, and the hard round brush from my own brush set for blending colors.

I also spent some extra time working on the drawing after the tutorial was done. Here's the outcome of the demo, with the more finalized version of the drawing all the way on the right:

There are a bunch of tutorials I've made which are helpful to watch alongside this one.

Choosing colors: This tutorial shows my workflow for choosing colors intuitively, and runs you through the specific tools that I use to achieve that - a workflow I use in this tutorial as well, so if you found that this tutorial moved a little too fast, check out this one for more information on the specifics of this workflow.

Lighting as a design tool: This tutorial shows you how you can use lighting purely as a tool to make your art look more immersive and interesting, but most importantly, it elaborates on the idea of using visual elements purely to further your own artistic idea, rather than as something you have to convey "accurately."

Constructing a pose: This tutorial demonstrates how I construct poses and think about adding rhythm and visual interest to them, prinicples that I use a lot in this tutorial video.

As always, here is the cheat sheet with essential information from the tutorial, which you can also find attached to this post as a PDF file with clickable links:

I hope you enjoy this video and that it helps you to find a more intuitive, emotive approach to creating! Feel free to share any future tutorial suggestions in the #tutorial-suggestions channel in the discord server (If you don't know how to join, just follow the steps outlined here) or leave them in a comment below ❤

Wow, really needed this tutorial! I've always admired how you convey so much emotion and depth into your work😍 I wanted to ask, when you're creating a piece, how do you decide which emotions or feelings to highlight without overwhelming the viewer? Do you find it’s a balance between your personal expression and thinking about how the audience will interpret it and do you have the moment when you just know It will work? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

Super insightful video, thank you

Sad to hear about your parents' divorce. You're not the only one experiencing bad timing. My parents divorced 9 years ago. The divorce affects my entire family and it's an ugly thing to see.

One of the best you've done so far. Thank you.

Thank you. Very helpful, lots of great suggestions! I will probably use Photoshop at some point in the future. I still use Procreate for most of my sketching. A bit of a learning curve on my Wacom ( a slow process so far, using Corel Painter 2023). I don’t want to transition to Photoshop until I reach a ‘few’ ! goals with work flow. Your videos are helping to keep me focused.👍🏻

This is so helpful! I think I tend to draw things that are a bit 'safe' and I don't really lean into the emotional. I think I may give that a try, I imagine it's super cathartic! Also, I LOVE Pleasantville, the way colors told the story was amazing to me.

Thank you for such an inspiring tutorial! I definitely need to learn to embrace ambiguity more. I love that you mentioned the Animatrix: Beyond, it had such a big influence on me too!

This is probably one of my favorite tutorials

Loved the video made me think a lot <3

Hey Loish, for some reason your free brushset only imports as one "untitled brush" in Procreate. Any suggestions on how I can fix that?

Every tutorial you make heals a part of myself lol thank you so much

I think it's so cool how you were able to give definitive answers as to how your art is emotive because that can be such a difficult thing to pin down! Thank you for letting us in on your thought process and creative process

Donnie Darko is one of my all time favorite movies, and I love Eternal Sunshine too!
