Time for a new tutorial ✨ This one is on Artistic Roadblocks! A roadblock is anything that brings your creativity to a standstill, including art block, burnout and drawing-related injuries. I've had my fair share of experiences with these, and in this video, I'll be sharing my story as well as all the tips and advice that I can give! I got so many questions about drawing-related injuries in my Q&A sessions that I felt it was time to put together a more comprehensive resource. This video is all about how you can learn from these experiences, and which healthy habits you can implement to get past them and hopefully prevent them in the future!

Next to this tutorial video, I also put together a worksheet pack! It implements principles from this video, so it's helpful to watch the video first. The worksheet can then help you to self-reflect and pinpoint the issues you can work on! It's attached to the bottom of this post.

Here's a cheat sheet with the most important information from the video - you can also find a PDF version with clickable links attached to this post!

Here are some additional tutorials I've made in the past that would be a great supplement to this one:

Creating an artistic routine: this video is about how you can set artistic goals and implement them into a steady, manageable routine. It's also about how you can balance your drawing time with other activities. It's a great supplement to this tutorial and I mention it a lot!

Imposter syndrome: this video is about how imposter syndrome can manifest for artists, and gives tips and advice for how to deal with these negative emotions.

Simple exercises for when you are short on energy, time, or inspiration: This is a good resource for those of you who are struggling with artblock, or aren't sure how to make the best use of your drawing time. It gives a range of exercise suggestions for each scenario!

A roadmap for artistic growth: This video is about what an artistic journey looks like, and how you can focus on building different skills at different stages. It can be helpful for those of you who want to zoom out and look at the overall artistic journey, rather than just the roadblocks on their own.

I hope you enjoy this video ! Feel free to share any future tutorial suggestions in the #tutorial-suggestions channel in the discord server (If you don't know how to join, just follow the steps outlined here) or leave them in a comment below ❤

This is super helpful, thank you 💖

Thank you so much! I joined just so I could see this video because for almost a year now I have had nerve damage and nerve inflammation and trapped nerves in both my arms and it's been a struggle mentally to accept and deal with it. Surgery is very likely, and I am trying to accept that it will take a while. But it is not the end of the world to take a break.

Great and very relatable session! I’ve been working so much these past years that it has affected my eyes, which is kinda scary. I need to take more breaks and work shorter sessions to prevent eye strain. Also, I heard someone say that ”your next posture is your best posture”. I really like that and try not to stay in one place for too long.

Do you have procreate brushes for your most used brushwork?

Not many people are self aware...and your on a different level...this level of self introspection should be taught in schools! Great Video!

Long term investments are so important. I looked back at photos from my graduation from 6 years ago and noticed how hunched I looked. And I only noticed AFTER I started suffering from back and shoulder pain the past 2-3 years. If I had taken measures on time while I was still a student I could've avoided that chronic pain which honestly crippled ne both physically and mentally. Thank you so much for the experience you share and for taking the time to synthesise it so clearly. I am eager to start a journal again where i mix and match the different ingredients you listed and compile a list of "go-to switches" for the different roadblocks. Honestly, to me mental blocks seem harder to overcome because they tend to infiltrate my whole identity and perception of reality. I feel depressed and suddenly I perceive everything as depressing, even when there are things I would naturally perceive as something welcome. I feel a bit uneasy when others share the same struggles because part of me is in denial that this is a part of life. It still keeps looking for that silver bullet that is gonna remove this struggle altogether and keeps gravitating towards examples of people who seem to 'have it together'. But that only feeds into that pattern of feeling broken and trying to fix it and then overanalyzing it and feeling even more broken. Sorry for the long comment haha, it just really helps me with clarity when I put it together like this

Loish, thank you for this video! Thank you for sharing your own experiences…your ‘ups and downs’ and the things you did to work through the difficult times. I appreciate your openness. 💙👍🏻. So many helpful suggestions👍🏻

People forget that rest is really productive 🫡

Cornelia

Thank you for this. I've already been recovering from CTS for 7-8 months and I'm still struggling with getting enough rest. When I make art I overwork and when I don't I feel like a failure. It's really stressful because I'm not guaranteed to work adapted hours, so I must recover fully and quickly.

Thank you for this video. I've been having some trouble with nerve-entrapment and I'm on the process of solving that. It might require me to take sick-leave from my day job but if that's the requirement, then so be it. When it flares up, I will wake up many times during the night because my arms go numb. I want to finally heal this. As for mental health, I definitely have bouts of being confused and I'm under heavy pressure of needing to improve my art. Usually this causes me to run around in circles and buying all kinds of tutorials trying to solve my problem. It's as if I don't simply trust in myself to improve by simply drawing.

Laws

I really appreciate the time and effort put into this video, Lois! Very relatable.

Eve

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and tips. I've hit a serious roadblock which stopped me from creating for three years straight. I'm currently in the process of going out of the rut and your insights make me very hopeful. I will definitely be using the cheat sheet to help myself work through the struggles! ❤️

Loish

I'm so sorry to hear that Eve! You're not alone and these things can take so much longer than we ever anticipated. But healing is possible! I hope the worksheet can help you in your healing process :)

Lois. One of your great qualities is that you are humble and willing to be vulnerable. (in your art and your tutorials). That is certainly on display in this video. I'm glad that you've found solutions that work for you. You always seem to be coming from a sincere place in trying to help others. As a Physical Therapist I can assure you that the ergonomic principles you outlined are sound. (Joints tend to be happy in neutral positions)-don't let the haters cast doubt there. Strength training is another underutilized important intervention to maintain good posture, work against the effects of gravity and maintains balance. Thanks for your instruction and constant inspiration.

Loish

thanks so much for your kind words! i've definitely noticed huge differences when i swim and strength train. can't recommend it enough!

About the mind-body connection- there is plenty of scientific basis for what u said. Myth of Normal by Gabor Mate shows this as well as “The body keeps the score” - the brain is a part of our body so it’s only natural that our mind will affect our body.

Every time Compassion is shown, I get so carried into the artwork that I have to go back 20 seconds because I realise I was not paying attention anymore to what you say but instead I get lost into the feelings that it brings up. What a piece of art !

I just saw this! I loved it for many reasons <3 I appreciate your vulnerability and your willingness to think outside of the box. It took me about 10 years to recover fron a torn tendon ( I used to play classicla music), and I only did because I stumbled on the work of Nichole Sachs. Her approach is similar to Sarno's, but she nailed down a method that WORKS and feels doable. And she explain everyhting so clearly! I highly recommend listening her podcast! In my case, after years of trying EVERYTHING else, and spending thounsands of dollars in PT and other things, JournalSpeak is what brought me back to my life. Like you, Loish, if I draw from tension and pressure instead of enjoyiment and flow, the pain comes back. And then I know I need to take care of the underlying emotions, usually somehting to do with parenting. These days I feel grateful. I was in hell for years, but thanks to this injury now I know myself so much better than I would have otherwise. <3

Ronja

Thank you so much for this amazing video. I’m currently dealing with a tendon overuse for several months and this just made me feel so understood and hopeful for the future 🫶🏻
