Here’s a little step-by-step walkthrough of my recent procreate commission! (I also just posted the process video in a separate post, watch it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/41936043

Adding color to a black & white drawing is fairly new for me, so making this piece was a lot of trial and error and experimenting! I mostly achieved that by painting a color in a separate layer on top, and trying out some different layer modes to see if I could blend it nicely.

More info about the brushes I use here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-i-34615265 (that posts includes links to the brush sets).

I hope you find this useful! Let me know if you have any questions about this process!

I’ve been waiting for this breakdown! Thank you so much! It’s breathtaking. Something I struggle with is choosing colors. I go back and forth between too many combinations and wondering if something else would work better and lose interest in it. How do you tackle this?

Thank you so much! It's incredible! Very valuable information! I dream that someday you will teach us how to draw hair as beautiful 🥺😭 🤧

Loish

i also experiment a lot with colors before i really find the right mix! for me it helps not to make too many variations to choose from, but rather as soon as i see something that I like, i just go with that. otherwise i'll end up agonizing over which direction to take. i did a longer tutorial on colors that talks more about my thought process when choosing them! you can find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-colors-39277902

So grateful that you have been producing so much good materials!! thank you so much 🤩🤩🤩

This was so beautiful to see when I updated procreate! This is something I struggle with and would love to learn. I can’t wait to see the video of the black and white process!

Loish

glad you like it :)

Is anyone else getting a 404 error when clicking the video link above?

Turkishjade

Ah, figured it out: Lois, please remove the last ')' from the link for the video.

I looooove this illustration so much, and the process video for it was excellent to watch! Even though it's a commission, is it possible that this illustration will ever be offered as a print? Also, will you be posting the final image on Patreon as well? I'd love to see a larger version with more of the details =)

Loish

it will definitley be availlable as a print, and I will also post up the finished version!

Loish

thanks so much for figuring that out! i just fixed it! apologies :)

Courtney

Love this process breakdown! Is there a reason why you decided to change up your workflow by starting with the black and white version instead of jumping straight into colour?

Loish

hmm, it's a long story! the client wanted something similar to a drawing I'd done before where I used this technique. and with that first drawing, I was struggling with the volumes and making the linework feel more appealing, so I went into b&w shading first before adding color because I wanted to shift my focus to the volumes. I felt like my art was looking too flat at that time.

Nic

Great tutorial! Is it okay for me to post my own attempt to recreate this image using your process on instagram? I would not show your process or patreon only content just my finished result. If not, I understand I don't want to use your work in a way that I shouldn't

Loish

of course! no problem at all!

Tania

The process video link is down :(

Loish

hey tania! thanks for letting me know! that's very odd, I guess the URL was changed at some point. I updated the link!

Tania

Thank you very much! I've been on your patreon since June, I try to catch up with all your content and how much you've come along in these years. Thank you very much Loish
