Yesterday was the online version of Vertex! Vertex is an artist conference that usually takes place in London, and I was there last year to give a talk about building a career from your passion. It was actually the last event that I was able to go to before everything locked down due to covid. It’s sad that we’re still in this pickle, but I’m glad that we’ve been able to keep sharing knowledge online!

Yesterday’s talk was about promoting your art on social media, and I decided to make it available to you guys as well. Let me know if you have any questions after watching it! If there are a lot of them, I might do a Q&A session on this topic for you guys. For now, hope you enjoy this video!

Hello Loish! How do you think this lecture and information is still relevant after 4 years? Or Are there new marketing strategies in social media?

Loish

I think a lot has changed unfortunately! Algorithms have become really restrictive and the focus has shifted to video content. I think it's more of an uphill battle than it used to be! but the core ideas of looking for ways to post regularly and showing more of who you are online is still important I think.

Nasty Ewest

Thank u so much for your answer and sharing knowledges. U r really inspired me. 💖😘

Loish

thanks so much Karina! a lot has definitely changed. I no longer have really helpful in-depth knowledge about growing an audience now, but I can definitely talk about the changes that have occurred since I made this lecture!

Melinda Maria

Ohh thank you! Looking forward to this as I forgot about attending vertex this year!

Johanna

Thanks for uploading I was already hoping this talk to appear here as well

Aurelia de Bouard

JuliHello

That was really interesting and helpful! Thank you so much for sharing it with us! :D

Juan Gagliardo

Oh, I felt shivers down my spine with the shameless promotion exercise!

Veyranora

Thank you for sharing it here :) I was at Vertex yesterday (virtually of course) because you were on the list of guest speakers. It was an amazing event! I really hope they hold it again virtually next year. This made it so much more accessible. I absorbed so much insight and had a great portfolio review. Ill be watching more of the videos over the next 30 days for sure!

Loish

haha i've always secretly been a big fan of the trashy cillit bang commercials.

Avery Ann

Thank you so much for this! Do you have any tips for how to build an income strategy? I'm going to be graduating from school in May and this is something I've been thinking about as a new grad. Any resources you've found helpful?

Tia Kinsman

This is gold! I'm feeling more inspired about my social medias, and am happy to know that it seems that I'm generally going in the right direction with it :)

Dan Genovesi

Thank you for this, Lois. It helped with my thought process.

Kat Craig

This is really fantastic, thank you for sharing your knowledge! My struggle is posting consistently. Since I work a day job from 9-5 I'm not able to pump out pieces every single day, or even a new one every single week. So I post WIP sketches and stuff but I'm not sure that's interesting enough. Its a huge hurdle for me and I really don't know how to get over it honestly.

Scott Thigpen

Loish you one of the kindest humans, ever.

David

Hey i want to see your work ! Have you a Instagram account ?

Daniel H. Alcojor

Amazing presentation! I took a lot of notes and I'm planning on implementing some of your advices, let's see what sticks to the wall! Thank you so much for posting this video!!

Ash Days

Thank you so much for this that was super helpful and very enlightening! Definitely highlighted some mistakes I was making!

Roxolana Krywonos

What stuck with me the most was “post what you want to be doing”. But I’m also grateful for the reminder that social media is a tool and there are many tools to get out there. Thank you for sharing this!

TEB

Truly outstanding. This provides the best examination of how social media works that I have ever seen. Great stuff, great presentation, great art too.

Julio

Loish, this is invaluable information! It's such a gift to hear your wisdom on social media strategy. Thank you!!

Loish

I'm so glad you had a positive experience with it! the real life version was great too, they always have wonderful speakers and i met a lot of new friends last year.

Loish

hey jenn! that's a tough one, because I feel like I got lucky in a lot of ways with my social media following and didn't really have to strategize a lot in advance. I just kind of rolled into what I do so I don't know if I'm the best source of info for something like that. I do have one tip and that's to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Explore different sources of income as much as you can. Even if you are going for a studio job, it's always good to look into extra streams of income from the side from merch or print sales for example. the industry changes and evolves fast so it's good to keep different options open!

Loish

hey kat! that is a common issue. i think you're doing a good thing by posting wips and sketches, that's what i would recommend. basically everything i said about micro-content applies in this situation: think about sharing your inspirations, daily life stuff, sketches, throwbacks, etc. you don't always have to post new art! for most artists that would be impossible to post regularly.

Kat Craig

Thanks Lois :) I appreciate the feedback/advice.

Christina May Art

OHMYGOODNESSSSS Thank you SO much I really needed this <3 You are amazing

doublerainbow

What TEB said. Very good summary. Your experience starting with the very first platform like DA until now gives you more depth to analyze the whole dynamics of social networks

Olivia Cat

Loish

glad you like it!

Scott Thigpen

Loish, I have a question. In the lecture you talked about the huge art community on Twitter. I don't mind jumping in and having conversations, it's where to begin. Twitter is, and always has been, very daunting to me (I've been on it since 2007) and would love to find this community but don't really even know where to start or how to find it (yes, I know hashtags and all).

Loish

hey scott! what I'd say is, post your art on artshare threads and participate in the hashtags, and also like & follow & reply to other artists. it's one of those "give interaction to get interaction" platforms.

Scott Thigpen

I do not mind giving, at all. In fact I relish that part (meeting cool new creatives). It’s the starting point I had trouble with. But this helps. My troubles are I go straight down the political rabbit hole of Twitter and end up frustrated. So I am currently researching ways to skip past that (tweet deck is a contender)

megamaster

Awesome content as always Loish! What really stuck with me is finding my own tone of voice. That's always been hard for me because I haven't got too much feedback. One thing that I often feel with social media is that I don't feel very connected. Even when people are engaged and I'm getting/replying to comments sometimes I get the feeling that I'm just talking to a screen. What has been the most fulfilling part of social media for you. When did you feel the most connected and when you we're growing the most?

Loish

finding a tone of voice that fits with you can be a longer process! if you get the chance to talk to a friend or family member about it, try the exercise out - who knows what will come from it? you can always change course later if you want. for me the most fulfilling has been honestly meeting people in real life that followed my work. that made the connection 'click' for me. and also doing things like kickstarter and this patreon and seeing the support. in your case, have you tried joining a discord or smaller community? that sometimes feels more 'real' than the social meida platforms.

Loish

I see what you mean. I feel like twitter is designed to boost heated conversations that can feel very unproductive, which is something I experience with dutch political issues on twitter. I set my trending topics to china so that I don't have to see what people are arguing about, which is helpful. I hope you find ways to make it work for you!

Rebeka

thank you for sharing this, it was super helpful!

my tip jar

Well crafted and informative talk :)

Carla

thanks for sharing. it is very helpful for me. i have a frequent problem with wanting to share good quality images on instagram. they always lose a lot of quality, could you help me?

Esperanta Dragon

I didn't know you worked on Horizon: Zero Dawn! It's my most favorite game ever and Aloy is an amazing female character. Thank you for this video, it helped a lot!

Loish

so glad you like it! it was awesome to work with guerrilla games :)

Loish

Hey Carla! Make sure that the image dimensions are exactly correct when you format them (1080px wide, and maximum 1350 tall), and save them as a png!

Ju Vidal

Oh Thanks for sharing this! I always feel so lost on Social Media, and you definitely give me a new way to see it! Thanks for the exercise too! I will try the Advertising exercise! : )

Amanda Jene | UX/UI

Yuki

Kathleen Andrews

Hi Loish, loving all of the tutorials and these extra little tidbits on social media. I was wondering if you'd ever had experience using Artstation?

Loish

yes! i have an artstation account. I just use it as an online portfolio pretty much! I don't really interact as much!

Rasa Lenceviciute

Hey Loish , I am wondering what your m thoughts on changing style over years on your art on social media? :)

Loish

hey Rasa! my personal opinion is that it makes an artist more interesting and gives depth to their development and growth :) i think if it's a gradual style change, your followers will grow with you. I've changed my style and approach many times over the years. hope this answers your question!

Sandra Elderberry

Thank you! I am too shy to promote myself in person. I have big hopes to get noticed via social media but fail to succeed. Your advice is tremendously helpful. Especially about advertising:)

Niquey

I loved this topic x2! lol. I'm glad to hear you mention Artfol. I found out about it randomly the other day. Now I think I might join

Loish

glad you liked it! i think it's always good to try out some new platforms and see if you vibe with it. you never know what you'll find there.

Loish, this is SO useful. Thank you for sharing so much knowledge with the community. I have been struggling so hard to grow and gain client work, so I'm going to come up with a more solid marketing plan and put your knowledge to use. Bless you. :)

andy_illustrates

This, after years of googling IG stategies, was still the most useful, soothing and inspiring talk I've seen. I felt optimistic instead of stressed out of my mind at he end, which is great for a change! Thank you so much Loish 🥰

Loish

so glad you enjoyed it!
