Hello patrons! This month's tutorial is going to be about social media - specifically about how I prep and schedule my social media posts! I'm hoping that it will be a helpful resource for anyone who wants tips for how to turn their art into engaging social media posts.

So I wanted to know: do you have any questions about how I create my social media posts? Are there specific struggles you have when it comes to this topic? I'd love to hear it! I will try to address those topics in the tutorial. Thanks so much ❤

Eri

Do you plan posts ahead of time? What should I post if I haven't produced much during that week?

Lola Idowu

What’s your opinion on recycling posts

Ayu

Do you actually care if you post at a certain time? Was just wondering if it makes a difference, posting at different times of the day for you.

Lola Idowu

What are multiple ways you can post the same artwork (cos it is a lot to keep producing art in order to stay relevant)

Amelia Fins

Do you worry about posting Art that’s not a finished piece like sketches messing up the branding of your page? And How would you integrate different studies and design topics like characters, backgrounds, and illustrations without it making your page looks messy?

Esperanta Dragon

How do you make sure the post will reach more people? Do you use any tools to schedule posts? Pros and cons of specific social media. How would you advise starting artist so their reach grow fast? Also how do you deal with toxic people and comments who mock your work? Not that you would have this issue, but as a starting artist I struggle a lot with this and I don't even want to engage with people outside of my fanpage, most of people are bullies these days.

Anne Hecker

With social media being part of your job, and also being accessible 24/7, do you schedule breaks and downtime like you would a typical job -- and along those lines, do you have anti-burnout techniques (if you feel the need to have them)? I find the concept of engaging as much as some folks do exhausting and overwhelming.

Aliza

I'd love to know how you go about tagging and avoiding any sort of shadow ban 😅 If you've ever experienced that, or even if you've experienced changes in the algorithm that have affected the viewership on your posts. Not sure if these are things that larger accounts struggle with at all!

xenaquaria

I'd say... How does one create posts that make people engage with you? Like, which ways are best to make people engage with our art? I know you've mentioned before to think about social media as a conversation, but I hoping you could provide examples of this. Normally if I post something I don't get much engagement as comments, just likes. Hopefully my question makes sense 😅 Thank you in advance!!!

Clarissa

What are your preferred placements? Is it only on IG feed or also DevianArt, Pinterest, IG Reels, Facebook, Twitter? Do you see any strong funnel activity from one social media to Patreon? (I'm wondering what is the best ROI of effort)

Sandra Elderberry

I find it challenging to continue to post without rewards from the platform (likes, views, etc.). Also creating art only specifically for social media sometimes feels forced and uninspiring, especially when you need to make video content which requires much more time and distracting from the process. Interaction on social media often feels ingenious... Do you feel the same sometimes? How is overcome this and keep creating?

Chris

My question would be about your order of preference. I know you have content on many platforms. How do you decide what to post and where. Particularly in what order? I, personally, get flustered trying to keep up with so many different social media outlets. To the point where I end up giving up on few of them and they become ghost towns.

Ana

Hey, i would like to know how is it possible to be able to draw everyday, acording to some artists, they are postung daily stories of the drawing.I tried to post weekly and to be honest it is not easy, but everyday? Like damn))) Is there some app that you connect to social media and it posts for you at the indicated hours? Thankyou!

Kat Craig

I think my question is kind of a culmination of a lot of questions here, but how do you get folks to engage with you (minus the 'DM it @IMABOT'). I've often asked a question in my description, but not many people respond. Part of that is I know I have a small following. Also, how are you able to keep up with the millions of platforms out there? Do you just post the same thing to all of them at the same time? And one more...Do you think reels are still the thing to feed the algorithm? Thank you <3

Victoria Eve

How to increase reach in a genuine way? And if you should only post what people expect of you or branch out with different styles, mediums or studies?

Courtney Josephson

I was wondering about formatting, IG is pretty hideous for cropping. Apologies if you've already addressed this but do you use the filters and tools on IG?

Madhuvan Yadav

How do you manage to post high quality content , i mean instagram compresses my posts an it looks bad

Rachel Harrison

I noticed you film the drawing process for a lot of your paintings to turn into reels. I enjoy making those types of reels but sometimes they can feel time consuming and annoying to set up for. How do you optimize your workflow so that filming and editing these videos is as simple as possible?

Wabisabii

What I always want to know is how to make your social media appealing to your audience to where they want to engage in your art journey weather traditional and digital, fanart, characters designs ……… I feel like I lost more people then gain more than anything

Kai Thomson

How to keep your audience even if its not the same subject all the time, my style is constantly changing and I dont want to stick to the same subject all the time, but if I change no one wants to stick around.

Piotr Kostecki

Thank you for this tutorial, it will be very helpful for me 💛 I always wonder about sketches, should I show a lot to followers or should I only share the polished works. Secondly I wonder how could I reach people who are not my followers.

Alfred Manzano

Oh man this one I will have to take notes haha, I can’t think of a specific question that someone else hasn’t already said tho, definitely very interested in seeing how you handle multiple platforms

Ashley Cirimeli

I would love to see your set up (tripods? lighting?) for when you film for social media content. Do you use any management software or apps to mass post across a lot of social media sites or do it manually?

Yurika

Might be good to (briefly) talk about why you would want to post on social media. Chances are, you want you and your artwork to be recognized, grow your audience, etc. But how often does one have to deal with the fear/sadness/disappointment of posting into a void? I also often feel a cringe with how social media can give a toxic mindset of how 'valid' you are based on the number of followers/likes/etc. [Not sure how accurate this is, but I've also heard algorithms on certain apps can make new artists even less discoverable] Probably healthier to have a mindset of only posting for yourself, but that also seems like a very lonely journey. There's 'social' in social media for a reason. Oh, mental health... 🥲

Anska

There's two things I have been wondering about in regards to social media: One is how to keep it from becoming overwhelming. Especially microblogging platforms like insta or twitter throw so many new posts at me every time I log in, that by the time I am done writing comments/replies, I usually feel very stressed out. My second question is perhaps more niche, I have often heard that one should join a social media platform before it peaks in popularity - but how do you even find out about them before they become popular? I hope you have had a chance to relax a bit from all the excitements of October by now (that jet-lag sounded horrible) and have a very lovely November. 🙂

Brittani Harris

The IG algorithm is all about reels now. Do you have any suggestions for super easy reels to make? Art is just a hobby for me, but it’s really discouraging that my followers don’t even see my posts because of the algorithm.

Adrian Tarpan

Yeh, it would be cool to see how you prepare your illustrations or reels before uploading them to social media! Also what resolution do you use in your canvas, because I can't do those details without getting pixelated! Thank you! :)

Ellie

Hey Lois, in regards to art and social media, I have always wondered how people stay true to themselves and connected to their art when they start showing it on social media. After I got into DA I experienced so many times this feeling of starting to create something and then jumping right to the moment of posting it online thinking how it would look there. It made things feel hasty, artificial and forced and I either don't step into the social media and keep the drawings just private or I start to post and get really drawn into the 'ambition' side of things which makes me feel stiff and stagnating with my art. Still, so many times I fantasized about being a renowned artist making emotional, thought provoking drawings and sharing them with people on the internet but after experiencing this unhealthy shift of focus it crashed quite a lot. So I was wondering if and how you manage to keep the effort and thought you put into making your art and interactions with us and the world engaging without letting this work spill into the essence of what you create and render you frustrated/anxious/limited. I hope it makes sense haha

Lovewin

It would be cool to see how you handle it. I'm terrified of posting sketches as mine are messy

Emma

I find uploading my art to IG to be such a hassle and incredibly unfun. I always look up the dimensions required and resize my artwork and it still gets cropped and doesn't fit. Would love to hear how you approach this and if you have any streamlined tactics so as to not have to fuss with the cropping!

Hedda Kverndalen

Do you use an app to plan posts ahead, or do you just post as you go? And how important are hashtags really in your experience?

Marta

How do your record your tutorials? Do you draw and talk at the same time? Isn't hard?

Marta

What do you think about showing also yourself on Instagram - f.e. reels with you? I thought it is easier to achieve connection with audience this way. But I see, you prefer to show only your works. Tell more about, it please *.*

D Theriault

Yes, good idea. Even touching on the subject of privacy and sharing personal pics with art or having separate accounts?

Alex The Sketchy Ant

The toughest thing for me is figuring how to get traction and promote growth, all of mine has been organic through conventions. All tips would be welcome.

Sunny Problems

How do you juggle making sure to post regularly, check emails, and getting notifications from people interacting with your posts without getting overwhelmed? Pretty much, how do you save organized?

Lise Hopland

Hi Loish! I am wondering about how to come up with constant content. Especially when I work very slowly, its only so many WIP posts I can make, and still I find it near impossible to get people to comment or interact with me on social media. I am also wondering if you have a time buffer? Do you post your work weeks/months later on social media compared to when you created it to give you some time? Also, what is the bigges challenge for you on social media?

ArtsyRoseBoba

I was wondering and struggling with deciding what kinds of artwork to post, like I've been sketching a lot and I enjoy it but notice many artists (with higher following) tend to have more finished artwork or their sketches look so refined and clean...I get burned out trying to finish work and post and make sure it's posted at a "good" time (though it honestly hasn't really helped..). And thinking of starting more videos of myself creating artwork since reels/tik tok seem popular. But also I'm kinda shy...lol so yea kinda feeling stuck :/

Calypso ReDecay

Do you use a single platform to share posts on each social network? There are really too many and I find it difficult to follow them all, in this way I tend to overlook many. I'd like to know an effective way to solve this and a schedule platform wouldn't be bad, but I don't know which one is best. Thank you so much for your tutorials!

Fernanda F

With the uncertainty of social media plataforms (specially now), do you usually prioritize one over the other or do you try to grow your audience in all of them equally? And how do you usually know if a new social media is worthy creating an account in to show art? Thank you!

Exlimixia

Hey Loish! My biggest struggle with social media is maintaining a backlog of things to upload. How many things do you have in your queue at a time (and how often do you plan to post?) and do you ever have trouble maintaining your backlog/what's your process for scheduling things out for it?

Jos Gonzalez Art

Thank you for putting this tutorial together Loish!, great questions here, mine would be: when do you think is a good time to start offering something or promoting your art goodies on your social media? right now I am focusing on improving my art and building an audience. But I was wondering if there is a particular moment that you recommend to make the leap of start selling or trying to sell.

Martha Balaile

Hi Loish, How do you share in a way that feels natural and authentic to you? Especially if someone is an introvert and not really wanting to do super trendy content :)

mlara_artescape

Hi Lois! I don’t know if it’s exactly in your area of expertise, and I know that you could do well without them, but do you think hashtags are still relevant? Also what do you think is more important on Instagram, nurturing followers via stories, or reaching new audiences via reels?

mlara_artescape

I’m coming back with a second question, and that is selling on Instagram. How do you go from offering free information to selling without feeling icky? How often would you sell so as to not be considered spammy?

Simone Mändl

Hey! I love this topic, since I am struggeling a lot with social media. 1. How do you avoid getting burned out. I always have times where I have a lot of content to post and then nothing for 2-3 months because I'm working on bigger things. Then the pressure of not posting builds up, algorythms drop you and that takes the whole fun out of it. 2. How do you choose which platforms you're on and do you post more on some then on others? I have given up on instagram, since I don't feel like you can make genuin connections on there. Likes are very anonnymus and comments are often just one emote. I've liked twitters art community.... but that is going down the drain as well :'D 3. How often do you clean your timeline/feed, meaning, deleting old posts or drawings 4. Do you use any third party software for posting on multiple platforms? I prefer posting on desktop but for some apps you can only use your phone and getting images from your PC to your phone is a mess :') How do you deal with that? Probably also relevant for artists using an iPad + Windows Laptop. 5. As what do you see social media, meaning is it a funnel for your patreon or a marketing tool for your art/brand (excuse the corporate speak :'D) or a way to connect with other artists. For me it's a mix of all, but I feel like the connection part is getting phased out by most platforms. I really like patreon so far since the people who are subscribed, really engane with the creator.

Adelle Gough

Hey Lois :) I'd like to hear advice for avoiding getting disheartened. I really struggle to find time to even make the art I want, let alone dedicate loads of time to an online presence! The internet feels to me like a big oversaturated impossibility sometimes, especially as someone with ADHD. I'm very creative and have decent skills but have zero business smarts and really struggle with consistency and with building any sort of following. It just feels like there is no point trying most of the time and that the general content out there with lots of engagement is largely just forgettable and pointless. You have a huge and highly deserved following now after starting online when you were younger, but what would you say to someone entering the mess of algorithm based social media that exists now? How on earth is it possible to be successful? I am mystified haha!

Bryan Stone

Ditto, I work all day and any free time is eaten up by house work, wife functions, or other unexpected events. My drive has waned yet I still want to do art. What's the best advice you can give on this?

erikathegoober

Hi Lois! I've found lately that by trying to be consistent with posting to social media it's been taking a lot of my energy away from creating new art/getting into a creative headspace. Last week I tried preparing posts for the week across different platforms and scheduling them ahead of time rather than doing it throughout the week. I'm not sure if this will help the issues I've been having yet. I don’t really have a problem with coming up with things to share because I have a backlog of things that I can turn into reels/tiktoks. Maybe the problem is that I’m trying to be TOO consistent and I’m posting more so to keep up with the algorithm rather than because I have something I really want to share? 🤔 It feels like a vicious cycle that makes me feel more drained than inspired. 🥲 How do you balance your time creating and sharing to social media? What are some things you do to prevent yourself from feeling overwhelmed?

Alicia JB

I would like to know how do you plan your post in social media and how you balance it with the process of creating What needs every social media changes: what kind of content(photos, reels, histories..), best hour for posting, posting frequency needed... How you distribute your days in a week to paint and also recording, editing, thinking in the posts... Time managing and planning what to do seems important to be able to post regularly quality content

Clarissa

Hey Erika! I feel the same way: the mental energy + time I would put on creating videos would take away from creating art, which is the whole reason I was making videos in the first place. I've tried allocating certain activities to certain days, but it's a constant struggle. I highly relate to that!

Tess

You have so many comments, compliments and questions and I imagine you receive a lot of emails. How are you not feeling overwhelmed by constant interactions ? Do you like this part of your job ? I am so curious about it ! For me, It always feels like a burden so I stop social media (and I a feel a lot better haha ).

Tess

Does the way you see your artwork change after you post it ( If it receive less likes you like it less ? and inversely )

Alexis Lee

How to respond to a constantly shifting algorithm? What resources are there to find out about changes to the algorithm? How you you prepare artwork for a posting schedule? Do you make art to fit the content your followers want or post whatever you've made?

Adam Blake

How do you feel about Mastodon?

Bon

How do you stay consistent, especially when burnout hits you? Also, What types of content do you think are effective, and how do you structure your captions?

raventoheaven

Hi Lois, as a not that big profile on insta, I have two dilemmas. 1) To start a small business, what do you recommend to get into it? and how should I get people to think about buying? I never know how to talk to people in my posts because I'm afraid of asking too many questions and not getting an answer… 2) How can I decently connect with people? you think showing your face can help? I hope you will be able to consider these questions! thank you!❣️✨

cajaeva.art

Hi Lois Things that would intrest me, are which quality do you use for posting on Insta and Deviantart and how do you deal with someone who tries to gain money or attention from your artwork? How do make sure your art is protected. Best wishes and have a lovely day! Cara

Tyler Hinkelman

there are social media managing apps you can use to batch prep, and pre post a months worth of content if you wish.. with full premium accounts you could in theory, schedule an entire years worth of automated posts... assuming you had the content and the time to do the posts prior... it makes more sense to maybe spend a day or two every couple weeks and tackle the stuff you want in the future, but you can even set times, etc for all these... and it makes it much easier to type out all your text vs trying to do it on your phone... I personally have not gone this route yet because im not that confident in my work nor do i have the content to post... however if you are and have the extra money a month, they are incredible tools to take a lot of the weight off of you for the most part of the month or year if you dedicate more time up front to take care of what you need to put out there.
