Here's a little step-by-step overview of my sculpting with color technique! I have a more detailed tutorial on it as well, but I wanted to make this one for a more compact overview of the workflow. Hope you find it helpful!

I'm only just now finding this one and I think one of the reasons I jive so well with your workflow and it feels natural to me is that it is basically how I paint in watercolors. I'm curious to try a mix of these two approaches with the random colors and picking the colors in different layers

It's just painted onto the background. It's pretty much the result of using the 'sculpting with color' technique where I just pick colors already on the canvas, because changing the lines to a pink hue created some bright pink edges that inspired me to paint a pink glow around the character!
