Here it is: this month’s tutorial! It’s on environment essentials. I already have two environment tutorials, but this one is specifically designed for those of you who don’t know where to start and find environments intimidating. It breaks the process down into the most basic steps, and talks about which aspects you should primarily focus on so you don’t get lost in all of the details!

Here’s the reference image I used in case you’d like to try the same process:

And here is the final result of my demo:

As always, there’s a cheat sheet! It’s below, and if you’d like a PDF version, you can download that at the bottom of this post:

The brushes I use most in this tutorial are from Wes Gardner’s brush pack 2020, which you can find here: http://cbr.sh/kfv7sa?ref=loish

And here are the links to my other two environment tutorials:

OMG! I finish the art and I love my work! Whenever try to learn something that scares me I quit half way and don't look back because its not appearing how i imagine or what I see in the video. But with your tutorial, I've learned to understand and follow the core steps. Thank you so much for teaching us how to start painting environment art! I'm feeling a bit more confident to draw more environment art and draw regularly. Can't wait to see what you would teach us next. Great teacher!

Thank you so much for this demo. I have Procreate so have to find a way to work with that but maybe I have to learn photoshop as well.

That was a really great tutorial. You have a way of explaining things that make it really easy to get and understand.

I'm a new subscriber so I'm late to this post but I just did the tutorial and I found it very easy to follow and helpful! thank you

Thank you for this video, that's what I was looking for. I'm new here and I'd like to know if I can work on your ref photos and post my version on social media. Thank you very much.

Loish

I'm so glad you liked it! Definitely feel free to post on social media - it's not a problem at all!

Hello Loish! I find this tutorial absolutely amazing and I'm only halfway through, it already blew my mind. Particularly the part about transparent setting in a gradient tool! I've been using Photoshop to draw for 9 years and I always wished I could use my gradients without losing the colors underneath completely – I didn't even know it was possible until right now!! 👁️👁️ If you don't mind me asking, is this how you use the gradient still to this date? I went to try it out but when selected the gradient, the "transparency" and "mode" settings were missing, instead, there is only "method" (which can be perpetual, linear or classic), I did select a preset that had only one color and the other appearing transparent like you showed. I'm not sure if it's achieving the same thing as you demonstrated though... I know there's been a BIG change to the gradient tool of Photoshop sometime in 2023 and I wonder if this video is from just before that update came around. My version is 24.7.1. I assume you also had to go with the update to the gradient tool. Do you work around it or do you use the updated version in some other way to achieve the same results you demonstrated? (very very sorry for this lengthy question) Much love! 💙

Nice timing Loish! I was just thinking that I should make at least one environment illustration each month. It's so out of my comfort zone, but you always make it so simple through your tutorials that even I can do it.

ArtsyRoseBoba

Oh thank you! I was just talking to another artist about being a little scared/intimidated of drawing environments! But definitely something I want to get good at drawing, thanks!!

Loish

yesss! that's a great goal. you'll improve so much just by doing them regularly!

Melody

So many good tips and tricks here! I downloaded the cheatsheet as a PNG. I think the PDF link is missing

Finally got a chance to watch this! And this is perfect timing, it'll be really useful for the January challenge, and hopefully, push me to create more environments this year overall. Thank you so much!

Anska

Thank you for putting so much thought into your tutorials and for the cheat sheets too. I love having a small note card (or a digital equivalent of it) on my desk while painting so I have a reminder of which good habits I want to adopt - and which bad ones I really want to get rid of.

SaliuAi

got so much to learn

Loish

that's such a good idea, having them within your line of vision is such a good idea!

Loish

woops! looks like the upload didn't work! it's been updated and should work now :)
