Hey patrons! A few months ago, I did a tutorial on drawing faces which involved doing paint-overs of some of your art. In august, I'd love to do a similar type of tutorial on poses. I know that a lot of you struggle with anatomy and flow in your poses and I'd love to share my tips and advice on how to tackle these issues!

Do you struggle with drawing poses, and are you willing submit your art for me to use in next month's tutorial? If you're ok with that, you can email me at info@loish.net with your drawing and I will make a selection for the tutorial! Keep in mind that I will be painting over it and changing your art, and that your art will be included in the video for all to see. (Be sure to check out my tutorial on faces for examples of how I would do that.) If that's something you're ok with, please submit your art!

And if you have specific struggles but don't want to submit your art, post it below - I will try to address it in the tutorial!

It's maybe not the exact topic that you intend to address, but what I am struggling with is putting a pose in an environment.

Aline Cordeiro

That's exactly the tutorial I was hoping for! :)

Shauna Lynn

Yes! I struggle so much coming up with different poses for my characters.

Melody

Are you going over anatomy as well or just posing?

Yess, especially when there are 2 or more characters interacting, I fail to add proper physics to the touch, any tips regarding that would be much appreciated <3

Kat Craig

Omg yes. I often make the feet too small, or the head too big or both lol. It also takes me FOREVER to draw full bodies because I'm not comfortable with them.

Laura

I struggle mostly with drawing poses from imagination :c

for me its coming up with poses from the imagination. I notice im always looking for the perfect reference to convey the energy and personality Im picturing in my mind (if that makes sense?). for certain characters I have, coming up with poses that fit their personality and not just plasters of references everyone sees on Pinterest. (omg sorry if this tone sounds rude, not my intention). I study a lot of gesture drawing, figure drawing, and this last year a deeper focus on anatomy, and it helps with my accuracy and proportions of poses, but I don't know how to break away from references a little more. not that references are bad in any way, it just limits me too much

Loish

i totally get what you mean. drawing from reference can be limiting in many ways and it's hard to find the right source material. so then it's more valuable to figure out ways to divert from a reference. i will try to discuss this a bit in the tutorial!

Loish

i'll be talking mostly about posing! basically ways to adjust, modify and correct a pose so that the final result looks better. i think that there will be some overlaps with anatomy though.

Loish

it's to address a wide range of issues that folks run into when drawing poses! stiffness is definitely one of the bigger themes i want to address!

I can come up with poses from imagination but when I draw them they don’t seem grounded. Like if I drew a character leaning on something they wouldn’t look like they actually had weight in the object. It’s also difficult for me to come up with more exaggerated and dynamic/cartoony poses from imagination while still looking grounded/realistic as mentioned before.

2026-09-13 21:00 For me it goes both ways I struggle with poses from imagination as they don’t feel grounded enough but then using a reference result in a post that feels too stiff and manufactured instead of flowing naturally. I’ve done gesture drawing practices but they don’t seem to be helpful as I currently don’t know how to do it effectively

i understand! i'm editing the tutorial right now and it talks about which aspects to focus on so that you can get more fluidity in the pose. i think you'll find it helpful!

Loish

it's a hard balance to strike! i hope the tutorial will give some helpful tips for you! it should be up on friday or so!

Yes this is exactly what my personal challenge is right now! I’m doing a short form graphic novel zine to practice and realizing how hard it is to draw people posing naturally AND with a dynamic energy. I recently bought a Japanese pose book for manga which has helped with the anatomy side, but also there isn’t much variation on body type. So besides general help with poses, would you have any advice for adjusting models/reference pics to create a wider range of physical representation?

Ahhh amazing!! Definitely worth upgrading my tier hehe. Thanks!
