I wanted to make some skin studies with this one, and more specifically skin that has a lot of blemishes on it. I’ve had acne since a very young age, and because of it I was put on hormonal birth control when I was just 12. Last year, after almost 25 years of taking birth control pills, I decided I was going to stop taking it because I felt like it had a lot of negative side effects, including for my mental health.

I’m really glad that I quit, but my acne has returned and sometimes it’s really challenging. I can’t help but feel a sense of shame when my skin breaks out, even though it’s just genetic for me: I inherited it from my dad. Strangely enough, I would never judge anybody else for having blemished or imperfect skin. I don’t think it takes away from anybody’s beauty. But it’s hard to apply that mindset to myself. So I drew this artwork to try and process some of these emotions. I hope you like these!

I love these so much! And I love that you are showing blemishes (I have so many too, and I'm so sensitive about it but these make it beautiful!)

I love that! Seems shocking - but thinking about it now, I realize that I have always drawn all my characters with somewhat perfect skin. Which isn't very real or rarely reflects how most peoples skin looks. I always had blemishes so definitely feeling these studies! 😍🥰❤️

thank you so much for this post! it always gives me a tiny bit of relief to know that others struggle with the same thing (even though I don't wish that struggle on anyone of course!)... I just feel less alone with it for a moment. my skin has never been super smooth or even the kind of clear that so many people seem to take for granted? it's going through phases, and it had actually gotten a bit better in recent years, but I'm going through one of the most stressful times I've ever experienced right now, and I'm breaking out in all sorts of new places... not just my face, but my neck, my scalp, and I just feel so horrible about it. at the same time, just like you, I would never judge others with the same type of blemishes. so maybe I'm gonna have to sit down and draw some similar studies to try and find some beauty in this thing... truly, thank you.

Feeling very seen by this. I have the same sort of skin and the decision to leave birth control behind for similar reasons was agonizing. Thank you for making something incredibly beautiful that looks like us. I love them so incredibly much.

This study is gorgeous and comforting for all of us who thought acne was just a phase as a teenager 😅

These are beautiful and refreshing to see ♥

Quick question guys. I’m a beginner where should I start?

I've been through that too, and may I suggest Spironolactone? It completely killed my acne. I stopped taking birth control pills I think about 7 years ago and the doc prescribed me Spironolactone. Never had acne since. Hope this helps! Sending love. Lovely art as always.

This is so lovely to see! I'm currently struggling with my own skin and breakouts (I am not on any topical medications like I used to be) ahead of my wedding, and it's really really lovely to see someone treat this very normal human thing as something deserving of beauty.

It's such an encouragement to know that I am not the only one going through life's struggles. Let's do our best so we can look back when we are old with no regrets.

Acne scars on dark black skin is the worst. Thanks for the representation.

This is powerful and vulnerable work. So glad you did this and shared it with us. 💙 Beautiful art!

Wow acne! I just got over a stubborn round. My acne is like 95% triggered by what I eat, so at least I sort of have an idea of why it happened, when a new outbreak starts lol... That said, your confidence still takes a hit when your skin has been good for a while and then it suddenly isn't! Your last paragraph is super relatable!

Just figured I'd add some of the danger foods in case others want to experiment with cutting out certain foods: Causes acne, be careful: Dairy... all dairy (rip) Cheese (yes, that's dairy but I'm adding it a second time for emphasis) Pork Fried foods Most oils (especially chili oil) Mayonnaise Might cause acne: Bread CERTAIN brands of oat milk (they add oil to make it more "barista-friendly") Delicious sauces and dressings that probably contain oil Safe: Beef (surprisingly) Fish Chicken Veggies Tofu Chocolate, as long as it's not too cheap (thank goodness for this) Black coffee, tea etc.. The acne-free food path is healthy but lonely.. lol

Thank you for portraying real people. You are one of the few artists who doesn't stick to drawing "beautiful" perfect girls. And yep, acne is not just a phase, unfortunately. I am 38 yo, and my acne cleared up like 10 years ago, I also stopped taking birth control (the worst treatment) I changed my diet to a low-sugar one, I lost weight (insulin-related) and I saw a big change. Love your work!
