I started off the year by jumping out of my comfort zone! I met up with a group of fellow artists and we went to the zoo to draw the animals from life. Every time I do this, it’s an extremely frustrating experience because it’s so hard to capture animals to begin with, but even harder when they are constantly moving! Despite the frustration, I always think this is a worthwhile exercise because it challenges me to explore new shapes and find creative ways to capture what I see. I also found some older sketches in the book that I never posted, so I included those in the post as well!

I plan to do more sessions like these this year, because I want to get better at drawing spontaneously and outside of my comfort zone. Do you have any art goals for this year?

Love that your being social with artists in your community. I want to do that. When its warmer 😂

I've always fancied doing a zoo drawing day but unfortunately I don't live anywhere near a zoo, But that won't stop me 🔥🔥🔥 my passion for drawing is fired up this year I'm determined to improve my skill, it might be frustrating and I may have some bad days but we got to push past our limits, each failure is just a different kind or success.

I did this at a farm once and it was really frustrating but also so fun! This year I really would like to improve my human anatomy- I just haven’t found a way to make it fun for myself I think and I get over critical with wonky parts

I love them! I was just thinking the other day about doing this and just getting a zoo pass. I think it’s great practice and I love seeing your interpretation of the animals!

There is something so nice about seeing art made from traditional materials. Was also pretty stoked to see a couple pages dedicated to invertebrates! They have their own level of fascinating 🕷️🦗 Thanks for sharing as always! My art goal for this year is to animate some 2D elements 💧🔥☁️ That and not to give up on that goal :P

Oh wow those are amazing ❤️

My goals are to just do more! And keeping in mind it doesn't have to be perfect, just practicing new techniques would be great

I love these, Lois! Any sketches you share with us, really. 🥰 Tbh this has always been my no. 1 reason for not doing live drawing around people, even back when I was studying art & design. I'd be curious if you have any tips for doing this more – despite the weather and discomfort. Or any other observations and tips you might have? #AccidentalQ&ASubmission 🤫 My art goal this year is to continue with my the 400-day project I started and to be more intentional with each session. (And maybe finally participate in the monthly challenges here, too!) 🫶

The fish! I love the fish. Although I'm partial to illustrated fish for some reason so I may be biased lol. And my goals.... To just draw illustrations rather than obsessively watch tutorials to improve while never actually drawing for myself - did this all of last year and burnt out fairly quickly lol

Painting more would be start. I have been in a slumb for about 5 years now. But I'm slowly getting back it, thumbnailing, painting a map (and struggling with mountains). Goals would be to get back to more studies and another final piece.

I gotta do more from life drawings, but I started the 100 heads challenge and I’ve seen improvement over the last week…. Gotta keep It up and for on 100 hands next lol

These are wonderful. We have a great zoo where I am, and I've been thinking about getting a membership and taking myself on weekly 'artist dates' there.

I want to do more studies in general this year. I don't draw from life much and I need to make time for it more often.

I can recommend just bringing a sketchbook around with you! You might find yourself grabbing it in a random moment of inspiration.
