Hey, everyone!

Nothing exciting with development aside from posing and rendering. Last night, I did take time to get the fixed renders finalized for the 0.6.2 patch. Did some last minute tweaks on the 'cooing' sounds. I'm going to be doing a bit more reviewing for 0.6.2 later this week as I prepare it to package it.

Last week, someone left a comment asking about development time and I felt it was a topic worth discussing here. Since it's something that's talked about a lot and feels like developers rarely get a chance to discuss, or at least have the chance to weigh in. Keep in mind though, this is how development is for me.

It's difficult to say how long each update will take. There's two scenes I've put aside for now, while I work on other things, because I'm having a bit of writer's block. I know how I want the scene to play out, but how the characters navigate it with good dialogue is giving me trouble. I could just be sloppy and throw whatever dialogue hits me at the moment, but that's just...bad. But I do try to optimize my time and work on other things, so I can return and maybe even be inspired by something to help whatever creative hurdle I'm trying to leap over.

But it's why my devlogs are structured the way they are. I stopped doing render count a while ago because I just feel some people are too obsessed with it and it's a frivolous metric. It doesn't gauge where you're at in development. I could say there's 2,500 renders so far right now. But I've yet to work on creating a large set-piece which could take time, thus a week or two goes by of creating that set and the number count takes a hit.

It's also why I share what I share. Instead of render count, I share screenshots of assets that I'm importing into DAZ and retexturing, re-modeling to fit the characters, importing and rigging whole cars. It shows the actual work of what it's taking to achieve renders. And very few developers do this, which is why I emphasize it so much and why development sometimes takes time as I'm doing things like this.

It also feels like once you become an AVN dev, you are no longer considered human by some lol. Like we're not vulnerable to things happening to us. As many of you know, I lost my mother last year and it was very difficult trying to stay focused while mourning. A lot of us devs talk amongst each other and we stress when we get sick or something happens because some of us do share that info and know that many will likely not understand. I'm not gonna say that there aren't "milkers" as many call would describe developers, but again it's why I share the stuff I share to separate myself from that. Especially any behind the scenes work that I can. And what I make from Artemis, a lot goes right back into development. Here's a screenshot of some of what I purchased from last year alone on assets

Also, as of Chapter 5. I've been contracted with Universal Production Music to produce the music for Artemis. As you can see the bill for this is quite high, having to set aside $200+ a month to pay it off. Trying to get two updates for each contract term is a goal of mine.

Puggy's my boy. We're good mates, but I still going to pay him for animations I contract to him.

And I don't want anyone to feel this is a rally call for more money, it's not. Again, I'm just emphasizing that what I make goes back into Artemis.

Circling back to my point that we aren't impervious to things happening to us. Things do happen and trust me, I know things can seem sus. For example, I hired Puggy to work on the new main menu animation for CH6. And on the eve of release, my render PC "conveniently" started giving me issues. Now imagine how bad that would sound if I posted an update saying I'm delaying the release because of that? Well, I made the call to push the update without the new main menu because...well it was a stressful time and I really wanted to get the update out. The main menu wasn't integral to the update (well, kind of), so I made the call and packaged it and released the update. Releasing the new main menu later on once I fixed my render PC. Here's the conversation between me and Puggy about that happening.

Shout out to Puggy on his work with the main menu animation. He was really proud of it when he showed me the preview for approval. And I felt real bad having to tell him I'm delaying his animation.

But again, this is just to show that things happen. It may seem "convenient", but they happen. And I know there are some developers out there who take advantage of saying whatever. Though this is why I outline my devlogs the way I do. So you guys can see what's being done and the work put behind each development cycle.

I am trying to optimize my workflow to push for faster updates. But I do a lot of custom work and it does require time. Not to mention each line of dialogue has a unique render and yeah... I can get wordy with my novels. I'm working on better flow of dialogue. As many of you know, I've been jotting notes here and there for my next project after Artemis. Lowering the amount of LIs from ten (yes, Artemis has 10 LIs. I know, I'm stupid.) and only having 5 for my next project I feel is a big step.

Anyways, sorry for the soapbox post. I just felt like we devs really don't get the opportunity to discuss this from our point of view. And this is just MY development. Keep in mind others have their own methods and visions for their works.

Thanks everyone for enduring my TedTalk. And remember to have yourselves a great week.

I for one am glad about all the info you share in your dev. I also know that everybody has issues from time to time. Take care of yourself when needed Digi because most of us will be here waiting patiently. Thank you for the beautiful work and the great story.

Well done for speaking up on how much devs put into their games, I feel not enough is mentioned about how much these assets and music can cost. Yet people moan when they aren't there, and moan when it takes time to deliver. Rest assured there are a lot of us who are just happy to see another update and things moving, whatever the speed.

WrathfulKhajit

You doing fantastic Digi and Artemis is well worth the development time.👍 So you just keep carrying on as you are because all that time you put into it turns into a awesome story and fun VN to experience.

Chris M.

Perfection takes time. That's one of the reasons I love Artemis. You take the time needed so you aren't putting out a sub-par product. I have stopped support of one dev that I'm pretty sure was milking things. He couldn't even bother getting on discord and talking to his supporters and would only give updates MAYBE once a month.

Blood Of A Hero

Thanks for the update Digi! I admire your commitment to Artemis and your stance on AVN developers in general! I suppose that many people follow these games ONLY for the game and are oblivious to the fact that there's a developer who has sunk an unfathomable amount of time and effort behind it all. Those same people would follow these Patreon posts ONLY looking for an increase in render count each week, and that truly makes me sad. Regardless of those people, please Digi, we always say it, but I'll say it again! Remember to take care of yourself too :) We'll all be here waiting and ready for the completion of Artemis and DigiB_Project2 lol. Have a great week, stay safe out there and I hope development continues to go well! Love ya Digi ❤️

You're doing great Digi! Ignore the bad seeds and focus on the good. Those of us who appreciate the work you do won't be worried about time taken for an update. We know your work is top tier and we will wait as long as it takes for the quality you provide us. We appreciate you and the work you have done, truly. Thank you for keeping us up to date. Have a great week ❤️

Good work on an amazing game. All the hard work you put into it and the weekly updates are why I am and will remain a subscriber at least until the end of Artemis. Also support you by purchasing from Steam. Looking forward to book 2 since it’s been on my wishlist since being announced.

Not enough Anal!!! 1 star!!! But kidding aside, some people will always find something to complain about. As long as you're having fun, that's the most important part.

How long are you working on this ? I think some Time.. almost some Years🙃 I cant Imagine how You put it all together.. Day by Day .. Problems to fix .. Writing Ideas Renders ect That's why You have this Fan Base ! Some respect and value your Work ! Thanks for this Journey !

Allisgood

I agree with Drifty, I just tried to work on a semblance of a VN and man that was rough. Beside the art witch is in itself an art ( :) ) the writing of the story is tough. So like he said having fun is what is all about. You can see why some dev are better than other. They just have a passion for there game. Sometime wanting to get thing right takes time !

JEH

Thanks for the interesting DevLog.👍😊

Huh, weird.. I feel like I know this guy from somewhere!

BurntLimpet

Not sure about others, but I love developers pulling back the curtains to see how it all comes together, keep up the brilliant story building!!

Oh... You are doing fine, Digi. I can't say if 'the someone' you mentioned just asked of some estimate/guess or accused of slacking, but you are really doing fine, especially considering the live events. Dunno... Don't take too much to hearth, I think... People can be impatient sometimes, especially more so, if game is of a high tier... Lil joke for the mood: Did the mango/fruits plate model(#6211932) came also with a real plate for you to enjoy? xDDD

Lilatentakel

Hello digi.B, First of all, thank you for the DevLog. I think it's great that you're continuing to work on version 0.6. I'm already looking forward to playing through the game again as soon as the patch is released... including Cooing. As you may know, I support several developers via Patreon, etc. The other developers are also asked about the development time or when the next update will be released. Of course, I understand that people can't wait to continue playing their favorite game. We all feel the same way, which is why we support you. And I also understand that people pay money every month and want to see results. But what many people unfortunately don't understand is that developing a game is not like baking bread. Different things take different amounts of time (writing, coding, creating renders or animations, to name just a few examples), which is why it is difficult to give a time frame. What many people also forget is that creating a game is a creative act. Writing the story, creating the images, etc. are creative tasks. Constantly asking when the next update will be released and why everything is taking so long doesn't help anyone. It only puts pressure on the developer, but they can't work any faster, nor can the PCs render any faster. There are developers who have become ill as a result of this constant pressure. The thing is, something is happening. We can see every week that something is happening. And we always get great updates that make the wait worthwhile. And we support the developers every month, because otherwise they can no longer cover the costs and have to stop development. Because rent, electricity, food, etc. have to be paid every month. I try to make that clear in my posts here and everywhere else. And fortunately, there are many supporters who see it that way too. I'm sorry that you have to explain yourself like this. It would be nice if everyone could understand that there are people here developing their favorite games. That's my opinion on the matter. Have a good week, everyone, and stay healthy.

Lilatentakel

I basically agree with Drifty. Unfortunately, there are also developers who don't have as many supporters and are dependent on everyone. The pressure is much greater for them.

Hey Digi.B.. Have you looked between the fan and heatsink? You may have a clogged heatsink under the fan.. Dust can layer over it like lint from clothes in a dryer. When this happens it blocks the air flow through the heatsink so it does not cool properly. You might need an old tooth brush and a can of compressed air. And of course a face mask to keep from inhailing the junk when it turns loose. I found it best to clean my heatsink under the fan every 3 months due to the climate where I am. Dry desert air but lots of dust when the wind blows. Gets into everything. Just an inexpensive maintenance idea that doesn't usually require removing the heatsink from the CPU and having to re-Thermal paste it. Even though sometimes it does need cleaned and repaste to improve heat transfer. That usually in an annual thing. OH! And clean the dust off the fan blades while you have it off the heatsink.. Dust buildup on the blades cuts down on air flow as well.

I know AI models are a taboo subject in creative spaces, but as a writer, ChatGPT has helped me immensely with writers block. I don't ever use it to make specific dialogue or creative choices, but rather provide some options for how to structure a certain interaction or find the beats of a scene. In my mind, it's the same as bouncing ideas off a friend or getting feedback from a peer. As long as it's being used to get feedback and not just outsourcing your creativity, it is a helpful tool when stuck on something.

digi.B

Yeah, you got it. It was build up in the waterblock fins. i had neglected it last year because of my schedule and it had build up. as soon as i released the update in april, i took all the blocks apart and cleaned up. been on a schedule dripping biocide in the loop since.

digi.B

love me fresh fruits. after working on that set for the fruit stand. remember grabbing some from my local market, lol

LeonDWfromNM#2023

Absolutely SHAMEFULL Letting your pet down like that!!! What would Artemis say about you neglecting your digital child that way??? But I take it the running temp is down a bit now?
