Here's a tutorial on how to layer 4-5 samples to create a big snare sound with tail, tone & texture.

Tip: I also forgot to suggest that its great distort the main 'body' of the snare sample to give it extra punch, i like to use Logic's Overdrive plugin for this, but play around with different distortion plug-ins.
