I really like the angle of the secret and how it like, brings the person into the media at a more personal level and just- yah, happy tapping! Tho I’m high and craving music so I’ll finish later, adore u in the casual fan way. I Hope you have a lovely night !!

Ok so hear me out here. Have you ever heard of Markiplier? He has two interactive choose your own series. I am not saying you should do that but if you watch them maybe there might be some inspiration there? He wrote, directed, and starred in them. I think you should at least check one out. A Heist with Markiplier is the most fun and short one but IN Space with Markiplier is longer and has more emotional punches. I just wanted to throw that out there because it is so creative and fun. Just my thoughts here. I love your stuff.

this is crazy lol the psychology of media (leading the audience to the idea or feeling that u want ur art to evoke) is something im SUPER enthusiastic about. i don't necessarily know a lot but it's Very Exciting for me. my favorite example is creating good scares or throwing the audience off in a way that really provides an Experience. this is obviously most relevant in horror, but it can get really fun & creative. there's a game i can't remember the name of where your character is playing on an old school monitor, & thats the primary gameplay, so when stuff happens in the MIDDLE SPACE (in "real life" for your character) it's a lot more jarring. a non-horror example that i love is in the last of us part 2. you're essentially in a gun upgrade menu (somewhere that's been established as safe, but not too overtly) & someone suddenly grabs you from behind. the gun upgrade mechanic (feature? thing?) was also an established thing throughout part 1 which is a HUGE game that's been out forever, so that added to the false sense of security. film is also really exciting for me, but it's more about lighting, music, camera angles, etc. very artistic choices that have the ability to evoke a very specific feeling. first example that comes to mind is in parasite, that one shot of the basement man's eyes as he comes up the stairs in the dark? it was SO good & unsettling in a very specific way, i couldnt stop thinking about it. another one that really left an impact on me is heathers (the original 80s one). something about the music & visual choices throughout the entire film make it feel so trippy & surreal. i wouldnt have enjoyed it nearly as much without that constant underlying feeling of unease/unreality. this is part of why i love ur vids, because u do those unexpected mood shifts u mentioned. it makes me engage with the content in a way that i never would have & really leaves an impression. i can't think of a way to achieve that kind of feeling in the context of video essays without getting artsy, you're doing great already (sorry, i know that's not a satisfying suggestion). i think that's all, sorry for the infodump, eagerly looking forward to WHATEVER u decide to do going forward :)

What you talked about w video games makes me think of ergodic literature! Ergodic literature means any form of literature (which videos and video games are) that require effort on the part of the reader to experience. Not effort in "this is hard to understand so I have to think really hard and analyze" but effort in just experiencing the thing--so the other side of the coin is often nonlinear works of literature, or works where the reader/watcher has to take control in some way of their own experience. However, not all nonlinear works are ergodic--when I learned about it in college, ergodic works were something like House of Leaves or the Stanley Parable, where every single person who goes into the work will have a different experience due to their own choices within the framework of the literature. https://damiengwalter.com/2014/07/25/i-tell-you-ergodic-is-the-future-of-fiction/

omg yes I love media that just messes with you psychologically to create that uneasiness! you're so right

Quick somebody check all the different colors the light in the background changed to for a hidden message! Jk but for real I think the level of research you put into your videos creates an easy environment to sit back and relax, which is juxtaposed by the super artistic shots you choose to frame which are always drawing my eyes to the screen. I'd say the closest to interaction I have felt from a video is trying to decode the multiple layers of a clever joke but I also don't know of a non-clunky way to introduce interaction into the medium of a video... sorry this wasn't helpful. Love you Ro!

Thanks for making this! There's a ton of interesting stuff here. I don't want to write a dissertation here, so my headliner thought is: try to think about the art more than you think about the platform. Like, I don't want to be prescriptive, you describe your abrupt tone shifts — one of my favorite things about your videos — as inspired by a reaction to YouTube-y-ness, so clearly thinking about the platform can productively inform the art to some extent, but mostly I think you can get away with making videos that you think are good, and only platform-optimizing them around the edges with thumbnails and the occasional CTA about comments or whatever if you need to. It can be stifling to constantly worry about the framing and the presentation of your art rather than just making the art itself, and most of the worrying-about-platform-interactions stuff is actually marginal optimizations rather than fundamentally what makes a channel engaging or successful. Unless you're Mr. Beast, of course. But thankfully none of us are Mr. Beast.

Regarding game design, I think the thing to do is to read a couple of long-form books on design rather than just playing games, to get ideas from folks who have really worked on them end-to-end. It's easy to miss a lot of design cues when just playing a game, and making a game is an incredible amount of work. Raph Koster's "theory of fun" is good, as is Steve Swink's "Game Feel". Jane McGonigal's work on gamification is a bit… over-optimistic, but still a useful perspective on motivating user behavior with affordances.

your videos definitely feel like art, not content. I have been feeling content exhaustion recently and have grown so tired of the feeling of being engaged for engagements sake. this is why i refuse to download tiktok as i feel it incentivizes content for engagements sake which to me seems antithetical to art. i'm curious what the various incentives on youtube are that incentivize content over art. from what i understand creators can see when in their videos people click off or when then comment, etc. Also, the 10 minute minimum for midroll ads, etc. a discussion of this would be interesting. like how the algorithm and platform influence contents format. i also wonder if just talking about the format of videos and chatting with other artists/creators would help highlight positive practices. like could we push back against contentification by spotlighting artists who are pushing against the grain? perhaps in a podcast or discussion format like this one? id love to be recommended more art-like videos rather than just content fluff and youtube is not really serving that in their algorithm. not sure if this is coherent, just some thoughts off the dome
