Bummer city man. How are y'all doing?

For a second, reading the description, I was like "yes, Seattle is a bummer city sometimes!" But I'm also doing a work-cation in Kyoto right now and getting out of Seattle after 3+ years (pandemic kinda made travel not a thing) and so I'm doing ok myself. Hope you get some inspiration soon - and some monies to buy more board games-I mean pay the IRS!

i know this shit is tied up with your money/survival and that sucks hard and is a sure fire way to make creativity feel so so bad. you said yourself though that you’re a jack of all trades, so maybe you don’t have to make a “commentary” video or a video in the same format as your previous ones? also thinking you have to make the most singularly original thing in the universe kills art and creativity imo, i personally watch many videos about the same topic if i feel like the person’s commentary will be interesting and ur more eloquent than half these bitches lol but fr if you want a book rec that helped me out a lot with my art, read “art and fear” by david bayles, should be able to find a pdf online. it’s a bit dated but really did help me through a massive block

I’m sorry to hear how much has been put on you this past month, and I get your frustration trying to work in a creative sphere where it’s so easy to compare yourself to others and trying to get ahead in this visceral trend cycle of commentary/ news. I just want to say that although I could watch the same script of takes from various other people, I enjoy watching your vids because of the perspective and personality you provide that I don’t get/ or enjoy from others. I would love to hear your take on the Colleen however I understand it probably wouldn’t be as lucrative given it’s probably past it’s news cycle, but I hope you don’t deter from opportunities like this in the future bc of what others may be putting out.

I'm so sorry to hear that, hun. We're here for you!!!

I’d love to hear a video about your perspective working in a field that revolves around being essentially “chronically online”. I’m in the same predicament, pursuing marketing but also had to recently delete all social media bc of my lack of control on it/ mental damage it’s caused me. I can’t imagine it getting much better in the coming years. Also I’ve noticed an influx of essentially “troll accounts”, people online basically exploiting the algorithm through controversial takes or with borderline weird/ harmful content (Like the Taylor Swift/ Nair Butthole guy). It’s weird how social media has decreased the morals/ humility of many people for the reward of cheap fame. Sorry these are kinda broad/ nuanced ideas to conceptualize into a monetizable video, I’ll come back with anymore topical/ current ideas if I think of any 😅

I’m so sorry you’re going through this difficult time right now. Being financially insecure and trying to do anything else is incredibly difficult. One thought I had, and idk if this has already been widely discussed online, but I’d love to hear your take on the Barbie movie marketing insanity. I’ve maybe seen 3 actual ads for it on Instagram but mostly I’ve seen post after post from accounts I don’t follow on twitter, talking about it from a dozen different angles. I think it’s really fascinating when a brand/product gets consumers to market for them like this.

Hi Ro, it’s nice to see you! I’ll share a few things I love about your videos. I think you are so incredibly funny, you have such a sharp and clever sense of humor. I also love how you focus on reaching for perfection of the art in every aspect of your videos. I didn’t know about your school/training background like you mentioned here, but I can tell from your works that you did the work to gain expertise in film and music and storytelling because you do it so well. I’m a fiber artist and, as I focus on and grow my own artistic sense and skills, I become even more appreciative of when someone achieves exactly what they set out to share in their art. I hope you can soon enjoy making your art again as much as I enjoy and appreciate your art, too.

Hope you're able to find a balance soon, you deserve the comfort! Take this with a grain of salt as a single viewer with no understanding behind the monetization of videos , but I don't necessarily come to your videos for the topic. I watch for the delivery and the humor and to hear whatever your take is on any given thing. Noah covered it a bit in his video regarding commentary clones, but really you could make a video on anything and I imagine you'd still get good engagement if you include your own "flavor" on the topic. Creators like Scott Cramer do this really well because, while he often covers topics that are largely inconsequential, his passion for whatever he's talking about gets the viewer excited enough to enjoy their time with the video. I don't know if you have anything you're passionate about, or something weird and fun you happened to run into while talking with friends or family, but small topics like that might help spark some motivation. Maybe some things you've learned while working on your music, how different mechanics in board games you play have evolved over time, important tricks you've learned while bearing financial hardships, talking with people you've met or experiences you've had while working on projects or hobbies. It's hard to say what you're passionate or curious about because we don't know you, but it's maybe worth tossing some of these smaller passions out to your audience just to see how people react.

hey ro! lemme start by saying youre one of the few creatives i'm willing to watch anything from regardless of content, not in a parasocial way but i simply enjoy your videos and your writing shines through in topics is never usually care about! commentary youtube definitely seems soul sucking right now, theres just a massive overabundance of people in the space, but a niche i think you would be uniquely qualified for that is definitely unfilled is quality essays about film & games. when youve dipped your toes into media criticism, ive enjoyed it a ton and i think your audience is already pretty primed for that kind of introspective/thesis based critiques. obv not good/bad critiques, more like hbomberguy or jacob geller. idk if that's something you're interested in, but i know you're passionate about film and an analysis of something like leftist films like how to blow up a pipeline from you would be very cool! regardless, know there's a ton of people who support you no matter the topic because while your videos are already some of the highest quality, your greatest asset is your writing imo, i believe you could write a great video about almost anything 🫡

Chromatic Mage

It might sound cheesy as hell, but as a fellow artist I’ve been given the advice that even if everyone creates a piece of art based on the exact same subject, each artwork will be different because each artist is different. An additional cheesy piece of advice that goes with that is: sometimes creativity comes from creating. Like even if you’re not super into an idea you have for one or several videos, you may find that simply getting into a headspace of creating will open up your creativity. I can’t offer advice on the existential questions, but I will offer my moral support to you choosing whatever path promotes your health and/or your financial stability.

look to the past. Everyone's gonna jump on what's happening right now. find something that fascinates you from pre-youtube time and explore it. Honestly, WHAT you talk about isn't the reason I watch your videos, it's because of HOW you look at and think about things that I find intriguing. that is your power. I'd be remiss if I didn't actually throw out a specific example to you so here's one - ever heard of James Tiptree Jr? a sci-fi writer from back in the 60's who was actually Alice B. Sheldon? Dig in. I bet you'll find it an interesting story and subject matter . Good luck, my friend. you're gonna be just fine. 🖤

I love your content and style so sending love to give your spirt some strength. If you haven't seen it, watch kiki's delivery service or 10 minute review of it if you don't have time to watch the full movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv9mL0YjUiE

I hope your brainstorm sesh went well! I for one am looking forward to the zelda vid if you choose to post it <3

Edit: this is not a fan request so you don't have to consider it at all :) Hope the brainstorm went well! Also, it is disability pride month, I would like to hear you talking about any disability you know if you want talking about them.

We appreciate you ro. Take care of your health. And when you’re ready to post, we’ll be here :)

Capitalism turns dreams into nightmares, for sure. Right now, you seem to be criticizing how samey all of commentary is whilst feeling the pressure of putting out the same content everyone else is. One of my favorite YouTubers is hbomberguy. I will immediately click on whatever video he puts out. I don't care about the the content, I know he will make it interesting. Some of his best videos are deep dives into things he LOVES. If you're feeling depressed and uninspired by the bad things going on, maybe talk about something that you love. Something or someone that most of us haven't heard of. A comfort book or movie or song.

The Misha

I think Noah was right when he said that a lot of us come to commentary youtube and watch videos about the same topic from different people because its not just the topic that we're here for, it's the people we're listening to. I'm not the only one in these comments to say I'm happy to watch anything you put out, your videos are really good, they're unfailingly comforting and interesting, the topic doesn't exactly have to be relevant or unique because the way that you make things is unique and it's good. I think you've made an audience here who will come back to watch you talk about whatever you're interested in, not just what's trending right now. And even if what you want to talk about has already been covered by other people, that doesn't mean that your video won't be valuable too.

what you said about cycles of productivity really resonated. personally i find it hard to invest in anything meaningful because i feel like i already how it will end. maybe you could make a video about that? i think a lot of people just enjoy how you cover topics, even if those topics have been covered numerous times. such is being a “personality” covering different topics i suppose. but i could imagine there is a hesitation towards putting yourself on the internet when you feel mentally unwell or vulnerable. and although i am sure there are plenty of topics you could cover very well, your stability is most important imo i think you should follow the advice my dad gives me. he stopped telling me “just do your best” because it stressed me out. he now says “just do enough” and that’s helped me immensely. even if the videos are not perfect or even something you are particularly proud of — get your financial stability. everyone has “off” days at work where we’re don’t do our best work. same applies to you! we will enjoy anything you do. and eventually you’ll get back into the groove of enjoying what you make as well

Olivia Bishop

same thing lol i projected my own seattle rent/money issues immediately on the description

Julia Brimmer

i literally just became a patron so i'm checking everything out and wanted to jump in. your "how to stop spiraling" video is my favorite video of yours. it has resonated with me so much and it's something i've gone back to since it came out. but, it's not your traditional internet drama commentary video and that's why i love it so much. from how i see it, that video never reaches any conclusions or provides viewers with "answers", but the goofy interviews with your friends, the beautiful song at the end, the movie-level quality, and the fact that it's you delving into something with your whole heart makes it one of the most powerful videos i've ever seen.
