I've doing some testing with 360/panorama videos, here is one them for you:

Despite appearing to be low quality, this video is actually 4k resolution, o play it I'd suggest using the "tv and movies" player on windows 10 it should be automatically recognized and this will let you have a POV experience with this videos, just use your mouse to "see around", and I think VLC 3beta let's you play this kinda content too, sadly I haven't found a way to make shaders work with this type of videos but I hope I can find a solution.

Well as long as you have the specs to render in 4k the process is not relly that special, at least for 360 videos but I think that there is another type of videos for VR I think they are called stereoscopic 3d or something like that I'll have to try those next, sadly I don't have a VR head set so testing those is going to be problematic for me, I need to learn more.

I've been messing around with 360° video in MMD and Blender. But unfortunately for MMD, the only panorama effect that worked with shaders was a post effect that could only render ~170° hemi-spheres, which looked horrible, because it achieved the effect by distorting the normal perspective camera. I think the only way to get good shader support, would be if it was integrated directly into a full shader suite like ray-mmd. Rendering a cubemap is possible too, but would require baking the model's physics to a vmd file, so that it's exactly the same movement for all 9 cube cameras. This could be done using mmd-tools in Blender. I remember that MMM could bake physics too, but I'm not sure if they could be exported. Regarding 360° players, the one I've been using is the GoPro VR Player: http://www.kolor.com/gopro-vr-player/ Not sure how it compares to the other ones you suggested.

MMM can bake physics to a regular vmd so that is not a problem but I would rather animate things like boob motion manually to give it a better look and you can manually capture physics movement on MMD but it would require a lot of key pressing lol, have you tried ray to make 360 videos, I tried pmot skin, darkadult shader, serious shader, greenshader and N3+, I still haven't tried ray, cook torrance or postadultshader, I think I have more but not sure since my favorites are darkadult and N3, ray is flashy but I don't like it that much really.

The 360° effect didn't work with ray either. Using the physics trace mode in MMD for baking sounds like hassle, lol. But since you can get keyed physics, cubemaps sound like an alternative. I tried using them some time ago. Essentially I made a camera rig in pmxe which would be animated as if it was the camera. It had 6 bones pointing towards the 6 sides of the cube, so you would parent the camera to each bone and render the whole scene 6 times. The plan was to convert the 6 videos to huge APNG files, to load as animated textures on a cube model in MMD, so that I could simply use the un-shaded 360° camera effect to convert the cubemap to an equirectangular render, like you used. I don't remember the details, but something crashed. Either the APNG converter, or MMD, because it couldn't handle the huge animated textures. In the end I tried to use Blender to do the conversion, because it can load the 6 videos directly. However it was very slow. I also noticed that the edges of the cube were visible, because some screen space effects produce a different look towards the image borders. So I tried to render more views, to patch over the visible seams of the cube, and ended up with 18 different views, mapped to 3 nested cubes, each 1024x1024 px big, which is about the right resolution to get a 4K equirectangular image. They were blended together using a separate circular gradient mask texture. Needless to say that it became even slower. The result looked like this: https://i.imgur.com/KNmn90d.jpg In theory it could be possible to reduce the resolution and view angle of the individual views, because they overlap a lot, however 90° angles were easier to use. Sorry, I ended up writing a wall of text. If you want to experiment with this stuff, I can pack together the camera rig and conversion meshes (pmx and blend). Though be warned that I consider these nowhere ready for easy use, which explains the lack of 360° MMD videos in my Iwara account, lol.

That pretty much sounds like the approach taken for videos made with 6 GoPro cameras, hmm, you could really just use a camera rig, render the 6 different angles with shaders and just find something to stitch them together, I’ve found a couple of free software alternatives for that, maybe it can be done after all.

Takuya Sawatari

That might work. Do you have some links to software like this? In my case the cameras have a fov of exactly 90°. I guess for that stitching software we might need to use some overlap.
