Hi there everyone, it's Rich here with your regular scheduled update on everything that's happening this week in Digital Foundry. The #content meeting occurred as per usual and I've got a bunch of information for you!

Rich (ie me) has a few projects on the go. First up, I've just received an engineering sample of the Asus ROG Ally X and will be putting together a first look video for it. Secondly, I'm expecting the arrival of the Surface Laptop with the Snapdragon X Elite processor soon! I'll be talking in the #pc channel on our Discord to see what kind of testing you'd like to see. I'm also keen on the budget PC project I talked about in the Direct, but I think that'll need to wait.

Tom is working on some more not-E3 follow-up coverage, taking a look at Metal Gear Solid Delta, stacked up against some of the existing versions of the game. We're also thinking about a re-evaluation of Elden Ring two-and-a-half years on from launch, with a look at the DLC.

Alex is currently working on a Retro Time Capsule video, looking at the original Gears of War - OG Xbox 360 version and the PC port. He's also going to be producing a video on Lossless Scaling, the app that doesn't just do scaling! It does frame generation as well and I understand it now inserts two generated frames - something I expect FSR 3 and DLSS 3 to deliver pretty soon.

John is on point to do our Luigi's Mansion 2 coverage and will also be taking a look at Riven on PC and Meta Quest! There are also plans to finally deliver the big behind-the-scenes video on Penny's Big Breakaway. John is also working on a classic PlayStation 1 vs Sega Saturn breakdown, stacking up classic head-to-heads viewed through the lens of modern DF methodology!

Oliver has a couple of iOS projects on the go - his emulation magnum opus is due this week, which will be followed by a look at the iPhone 15 Pro running Assassin's Creed Mirage.

Will is a bit under the weather at the moment, but continues to update his guide pages on Eurogamer and adapt some of our video work for Eurogamer.

As usual, we welcome any and all ideas for #content on the channel. Hardware, software, retro - you name it. There's a dearth of game releases which is fertile ground for us to do something a little different - for example, we are still keen on doing the Netflix vs Blu-ray vs UHD Blu-ray and have made some progress there.

In the meantime, have a great week!

It would be interesting to have another look at the notoriously bad PC version of Elden Ring. I still cannot get it to run properly on my top end PC. It keeps freezing for just over a whole second at random and then the frames that would have been displayed during that time all get shown like it’s fast forwarding to catch up and then I’m dead if I was in a fight.

Man! You guys really put in work consistently! The content never ends! You guys keep me excited about gaming and tech! Just wanna say thank you for always giving me something to look forward to!

Ah thrilled there’s gonna be Lossless Scaling #content. Whatever magic they’re doing over there seems very interesting.

You really need to cover Octopath Traveler 2 for Xbox

Abhi

Is there any interest from the team in covering the Valorant beta on the new gen consoles that just dropped a few days ago? I think it’d be neat coverage

I’ve been playing recently prepping for the DLC, although i’ve been a bit spoiled by SpecialK’s ER-specific optimizations; I’m hoping, perhaps naively, that there will be some technical QoL improvements in the upcoming patch, like maybe DLSS so I can turn on RT?

I absolutely see the same thing. I feel it has to be either traversal issues or Shader compilation issues. They occur so randomly and for such a long time I keep saying to myself, "Please don't crash, please don't crash" for the extended freeze in framerate. I just had a crash last Friday from me opening the map and then going through my inventory. It's still in a bad state.

In terms of Snapdragon X Elite testing, I would like to see: 1. AVX-512 testing in RPCS3 (probably doesn't work, what does work?) 2. Older games that are fairly intensive like Far Cry 2 & the original Crysis with their built-in benchmarks. Crysis is a good one because it should be something like a single-threaded CPU benchmark if the graphics settings are low enough. 3. GTA 5 to see how the platform handles games with broken framerate caps 4. Older DirectX titles (9 & below), which might have some driver issues 5. A game like Rainbow Six Siege where the device might perform quite well, but the frame pacing might be off

As someone who has a large collection of UHD Blu rays, I'm really looking forward for that comparison against Netflix.

Regarding Snapdragon testing I’m intrigued on how good the Auto Super Resolution feature is able to get without the traditional inputs. I understand the platform is lacking in oompf so perhaps look at a title like Death Stranding (assuming it can run at all)… thanks!

Would be very interested in seeing how Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance compares to the original!

Vanguard

Still some LOD problems but looks infinitely better than the Switch original. Between 60 and 90 fps on a Steam Deck OLED.

guess i was supposed to know that the Xbox App installs these virtual disk drivers for every game it installs, and these are the things causing the freezes in Elden Ring. gotta go to device manager and disable every "Xvdd SCSI Miniport" in Device Manager > Storage Controllers and then restart. This is not traversal stutter and it is not shader compilation stutter. The way this game is coded, it throws fits when Windows is doing normal Windows things that Microsoft is making Windows do itself, by installing games from its Xbox App. There should be a warning to not use Game Pass games or the Xbox App at all if you want this game to not freeze on you at random. Just brilliant stuff from From.

Would love a trailer breakdown of Metroid prime 4 in the next DF direct. Thanks for all the content!

Considering picking up some of my favorite movies on 4K Blu ray so your findings there will be really interesting.
