Hi everyone, welcome to the Call For Questions post for the next DF Direct Weekly! It looks like it'll be Rich (ie me), John and Alex on the panel this week. We'll be covering topics such as the Dragon's Dogma 2 update (ahead of a full review from Oliver), potentially a close look at Snapdragon X Elite Auto SR upscaling and the upcoming Dead Rising remaster.

But that's not all - the delisting of Forza Horizon 4, poor sales of the iOS triple-A slate and the Xbox 'Keystone' streaming box patent will also be up for discussion. However, as usual, if you have any topics you'd like us to discuss - go for it!

And of course, we also want any and all questions covering as diverse a range of topics as you like. There's the usual, empty comments box below and I invite you to make full use of it. As usual, the deadline is 8am BST tomorrow. Thanks in advance!

This might be too late for tomorrow but would John fancy going over the GOG Resident Evil releases at some point?

Thomas the Jank Engine

John! Curious to get your thoughts on the GOG release of the original RESIDENT EVIL. Do you think it’s better playing it this way versus on an original Playstation? I hope you do a comparison video, like how you did with all the versions of RE2. Cheers, and keep up the good work.

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

Although they were often rubbish, I sometimes miss the efforts that console manufacturers used to make to distinguish their products from their predecessors and competition. Will we ever get a modern equivalent of 3D/dual screens, Kinect, motion controls, light guns, R.O.B. or add-ons like 32X and 64DD. Have we passed the era of gaming companies trying to do things differently?

dark_bt

Would you guys ever consider making a guide on how to properly capture and upload gameplay to YouTube? It feels like a lot of the publishers could use some help with that and also some of the games media as well!

Sloth

What are your thoughts on Steam Game Recording? Is it something you'll likely use in your own recording workflows?

Peter Karadimas

Hello gents! Could something like Auto SR be implemented on consoles for games running in back compat mode? Could this be a feature of Sony’s PSSR implementation?

Modren

With the recent frustration felt by many over the price of the Luigi's Mansion 2 remaster, how much do you feel a remaster "should" be worth? Is there a case for a game being "worth" more than it was at launch? I personally don't see why a fairly straightforward remaster should be $20 more than the original game cost, especially when the far more impressive Metroid Prime remaster was $10 cheaper than the original GameCube game.

Perfect_Organism

Lads, FromSoft have got in contact with myself and have asked me to ask Alex (via this Patreon post) a very binary hypothetical question: Would you rather FromSoft continue the homogenisation of the industry and switch to UE 5 for the possibility of better built games? Or they continue down the trodden path with their own engine, with the probability that their games continue to ship with the performance profile technically noted as "poopy caca"? The option "what the (sorry Oliver) , why can't they just make better performing games with all the money they have" wasn't given I'm afraid. Classic FromSoft not providing an easy option.

Filip

Lots of youtubers should take notice too...they upload their reviews with unlocked frame rates, no Vsync, no motion blur and it looks like stuttery piece of garbage with screen tearing. I once heard someone idiot on twitch say "looks great on my monitor". They should realize they are mainly presenting for their audience, not themselves.

Dom Datwun

Easy gents, there's been a lot of talk lately about the state of the gaming industry, and the unsustainable, ballooning costs and development times of AAA games. Another trend in the industry has been towards ray tracing, and path tracing, techniques which if used instead of raserization (rather than supplementing traditional rendering) should speed up development as they cut out the need for time-consuming GI baking and faffing about with fake lights. Many features in UE5 also seem to be about saving labour, with procedural environments, and its not unreasonable to expect a future where generative AI could be used for textures and models (especially for more incidental/background assets) to speed up the process of populating game words with stuff. Can you see a future in 10-15 years time where all these technologies have advanced to the point that the costs and time required for creating beautiful looking games actually come back to earth? Can you see a return of mid sized AA games on the horizon? Keep up the great work!

Jimbojones

How can Microsoft excel in backwards compatibility for Xbox while having such a disappointing launch of Windows on ARM? It makes me concerned that the rumored Xbox handheld might end up being similarly poorly executed.

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hi DF Crew! With more and more developers utilising ray tracing in their games which make them look more “real” (especially with a good quality RTGI), what do you think is the next step in graphics? Let’s say we’re at a point where 50% games are path-traced. Do you think developers will finally realise there’s one thing they’ve been neglecting for all those years - physics? Or is there anything else that you can think of? Something easier to develop and implement? Btw, can’t wait for your video on PhysX, Alex!

Perfect_Organism

On the recent resurfacing of PS3 emulation on PS5 rumours - Microsoft managed to get decent emulation of Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One VCR. Is the Cell processor in the PS3 really that much harder to emulate than the PPC architecture on the Xbox 360? Given what MS managed on the Xbox One, it feels like PS3 emulation should absolutely be doable on the PS5? I'm sure I've simplified a lot of complexity here so would be cool to hear your perspective.

cuicuit

Hi Digital Foundry! Are there any controllers for adult hands out there of decent quality? The official ones for Xbox and PS are targeting kids and the size makes it very uncomfortable, especially with joint issues... (Definitely not a kid anymore!) I would be very interested in review content for peripherals or any recommendations in general.

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hey gentlemen! Do you think it is feasible to implement a framerate cap that ensures proper frame pacing ona console OS? I would love to cap certain performance modes to 40 FPS (I have a 120hz TV without VRR)

Macky Dee

The de-listing of Forza Horizon games (and other racing games from other publishers) is a deep frustration, especially when it happens only five or six years after release. Going by current Steam numbers, FH4 is very popular still (the recent discount helps). The likes of Microsoft should be planning far ahead to minimise this, especially since they know this is a problem with the Horizon series. But it got me thinking - what is your preference for games where there are genuine licensing issues? Should these games be left available with copyright cleared ('streamer mode') replacements? Obviously much easier said then done with as many car assets as something like Horizon, and taking licensed stuff away from a game can change its core identity (see the Crazy Taxi releases minus The Offspring). But is some sort of compromise better than the nuclear option of de-listing? I'm very torn - I hate seeing creative work changed, but also am deeply uneasy with games being made unavailable.

StefanSt

With handhelds/hybrids being the winner of this generation, do you think that Sony and Microsoft are thinking about having a hybrid solution for their next gen consoles ?

Maelstrom

This hasn't been brought up in the 75+ episodes I've been listening to the podcast, so I think it bears asking. Why is the playout theme Turnabout Sisters from Ace Attorney? For those that play, what's your favorite game/case/character?

Rich

We've only seen ARM on Windows with a Qualcomm GPU. Other GPU/CPU xARM configurations are coming that may handle gaming better. The next Xbox will likely have a much more powerful GPU, either from AMD or otherwise. People are really jumping to conclusions too fast from one example on this topic.

Levander Davis

FROM Software doesn’t optimize performance in Elden Ring simply because they don’t have too. The main game sold millions and the DLC will probably match it. Thousands of players have played the game to completion and have shown there are no game-stopping bugs. There’s no financial, legal, or even ethical reason to fix stuttering or inconsistency in frame rate.

Levander Davis

What are your “light” PC games that you recommend? The sort of game that playable on most non-gaming laptops. I was impressed with how well my work laptop handled Minecraft, Civ 6, and Balatro on a recent work trip.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Classic FromSoft. I wonder where they get it from.

Leftisthominid

When will Will make his triumphant return back to DF Direct?

Leftisthominid

If Richard Leadbetter from 2026 came through a time warp and told you that the Alex Battaglia was regularly playing games on the Switch 2 for his own personal entertainment and not just for work (but had no way of showing proof or telling you the Switch 2's real name) and then went back to his own time, would you believe him?

Leftisthominid

This question was in a three-way tie for last week's most liked question. We need an answer

Leftisthominid

I am trying to make sense of the Xbox/GamePass release of Octopath Traveler 2. There's some weird graphics options going on there. They have a frame rate and resolution mode unlike the PS5 version, which is simply a native 2160p60. Do you all have any idea what is going on there?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Dear Digital Foundrymen, During Computex, Jensen Huang answered questions from the press; and one asked about the future of generative AI in games. The interesting part of his response was "..In the future we’ll even generate textures and objects, and the objects can be of lower quality and we can make them look better. We’ll also generate characters in the games.." It sounds like there will be some kind of generative mesh density feature that will allow low polygon objects to be automatically "densified" into more detailed meshes. Perhaps they could call it DE-LODing? It also suggests totally novel generated objects.. Either way, it sounds like the near-future will move from the pixel and the frame, to the mesh.. thoughts gentlemen?

Kipters

They have more control on what's shipped on Xbox vs on windows (which could be literally anything), and the available set of software on Xbox is known and finite. At the same time the console itself is a known quantity. That means on windows they have to ship a more flexible emulator (actually a JIT compiler), while for Xbox they can test, profile and statically compile everything ahead of time targeting the specific machine, it's a wildly different scenario

Saskira

Hi DF, I hope your all well. Should game reviews have some focus on how it performs technically? I'm having fun with the new Elden Ring DLC but the reviews from the major outlets basically don't mention how badly it can run (For reference I own the PS5 and PC versions of it). I'm not asking for a deep dive like a DF breakdown but there should be at least a warning flag. It can't just be me stuttering through the game on the PC and juddering the rest on the PS5. Maybe I'm being too harsh.

Kaveh Ghorbati

(Please credit as Local Bookstore) Is there any way to tell 30fps footage was captured at 60fps or higher? Is there some kind of pattern that emerges the same way as down-sampling / up-sampling? Could this lead to a solution for scs? I ask because I think future path tracing games will have a superior image quality at higher refresh rates, but I still want to be able to play at a “cinematic” fps Love, from Minneapolis

Nolen

I'd love for this question to be featured! Especially since DF has interviewed several developers on plugging in ray-traced solutions vs the development time it takes to implement rasterized/pre-baked solutions (The Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition interview comes to mind)

It appears that despite Apple's effort to push gaming on iOS, AAA games sell poorly on that plateforme, to say the least. Why do you think Apple doesn't push more gaming on Macbook instead? The install base is huge nowadays and it would obviously be more confortable to play on a laptop than on a iPhone.
Apple's Gaming Porting Toolkit is an excellent step into that direction but it doesn't feel enough. Do you think they could (and should) develop something à la Proton for Steam Deck, allowing thousands of games available on Steam to run on Macbook despite being made for Windows? Would that even be possible?

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Happy Friday, DF Founders! PC Game(s) Pass state being far from ideal, audio lag when using Dolby audio (both on Xbox and Windows), questionable games performance comparing to theoretically weaker console (XSX vs PS5), issues with quality (RedFall, MS studios games working better on PS5)… it seems like Microsoft could easily solve most of those issues, given how much money they have. I can’t believe Phil or Sarah are not aware of those. So what do you think stops them from implementing fixes to what seem like not that complicated issues? Why don’t they use Battlenet launcher instead of Game Pass now that they own ABK? How come the audio issue has been there since day 0? Microsoft can be great when it comes to different screen resolution compatibility or building awesome consoles (XOX & XSX) which don’t sell unfortunately. I might not be seeing the whole picture but it feels like if started fixing these issues one by one gamers would appreciate them more. Cheers!

1040STF

Rich, you have reviewed the OMEN Transcend 14 and many handhelds PC. What do you think of the Razer Blade 16 in comparison? Its high quality of materials and high tech specs intrigue me a lot.

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hey Guys! What do you think about the leaked screenshots from Jet Set Radio remake? Which games from Dreamcast/PS2 era would you like to see remade with some quality of life improvements? I’d love to see Jak trilogy on newer systems (although I must say playing decompiled Jak & Daxter and Jak II on my Steam Deck is an awesome experience). Where’s the next Virtua Tennis? Cheers and have a great weekend (or week for those who watch it on Monday).

durchkna11er

Hey there, Alex and John and Rich, hope you all doing well and coooool! Summer has finally decided to grace Germany with its presence, and it's blazing hot this week. I'm thinking about moving my PC to an open-air case, like the Streacom BC1 V2, to give it unlimited breathing room. But I'm worried about how much dust might affect the health and longevity and performance of my exposed components. Will they survive, or will they turn into dusty relics? Thanks and wish you all a peaceful weekend!

Jimbojones

That makes sense, I guess we still have to wait and see.

T

Do you ever think we will see a technological leap like the one we saw between ps1/n64 and ps2/gc? 100x the flops in one generation!

KillerFugu

Hello chaps, hope all are well. How much do you think consumer pressure affects optimisation in games vs press? I generally see that the worst ports are historically JRPG's but it's also the fanbase that is most lenient when it comes to technical aspects of a game. For example how many times do we see people defend Elden Ring saying it's good enough, better than Blight town or the classic "works fine for me". I faced the last boss in the DLC yesterday and on one move my frame rate dropped from 120fps to 29fps, that was hideous but I worry with how lax the community is about technical aspects we won't see much in way of a fix, let alone a souls game ever above 60fps.

HelenX

hi everyone Is Nintendo's generation winning strategy really just being a games company that likes to release games occasionally ? I'm not even really joking with that, surely the other publishers have to learn from Nintendo that they still need to make more than one game every 7 years.

Eric Hurst

Greetings DF. Valve just released, in beta, a games recording feature for Steam. With this feature in addition to new Steam features like more controller support and updates to family sharing, these seem like great features to have for a… console?? Is Valve building up Steam to be a potential console competitor? Do you think they’ll make the same mistake of not releasing a reference model like they did with the precious Steam machines, and only release Steam OS for OEMs to build into their machines? Or will Valve follow in the footsteps of Steam Deck and release a box all their own? Cheers

tod weitzel

Would Steam have been as successful if Half Life 2 wasn't as good as it was?

VeryProfessionalDodo

Hey there gents, I come to you with an “Anti-Alex” question. Recently built a PC after I switched to PS5 this generation, and who knew, a 4070 is faster than a PS5. However, as good as the in-game performance is, there is something to be said around the entire experience “surrounding” the games that is still lacking on PC, especially for the living room. I believe the UX of the consoles is a selling point that is often shrugged off by the PC crowd, since the joy of a good console UI is not really quantifiable by a benchmark. There are a bunch of small examples of this, like the snappiness of the sleep and wake of a Switch, the elegant ambiance of the PS5 menu, Quick Resume on an Xbox, or even just the bangers that Nintendo put out for their previous console’s menus. So this is a double question: do you think the PC platform experience will ever be delightful in the living room? And what was / is your favourite console UX? Thanks for the great work as always.

VeryProfessionalDodo

I just want them to release SteamOS for all PCs, but I'm beginning to believe they are waiting for that event, or Nvidia being usable with Wayland on Linux (which appears to be imminent!)

Paunta

Hey mates! FSR 3.1 has been released in Ghost of Tsushima, have you had the time to try it out? and if so.. what do ya think?

goregutz

Given how heavy unreal engine 5 is already on the current Gen consoles, do we need an unread engine 6 for the PS6?

Jimbojones

I think to this day game grumps still routinely upload episodes with screen tearing everywhere.

Revolution21X

Am I the only one who finds it odd how we talk about game studios. I know it isn't exactly the same, but when we talk about film we talk about directors, writers, actors and so on. While when it comes to games we talk about studios. Could you imagine talking about film like that, "oh did you see the new Waner Brothers movie, they made that other movie I like." I get it sometimes, some game studios are the same people, while others have huge turn over with different people taking on lead roles game by game. Maybe it is just me, I just wish we talked about the actual people making the games.

Treefinngers

Hey guys! imagine for a moment if the Doom 2016 reboot took out blood & gore! Wouldn't that be super weird? John's Perfect Dark breakdown was a fun watch! But I'm curious if anyone else noticed there seems to be no Blood particles or decals? I'm an N64 PD super fan! I first played it in Summer 2000. It was very bloody indeed! In shootouts the environment would become covered in decals, and enemies even got hit wounds! These are hyper-violent shooters! I'm worried now PD may lose its identity as a mature and wacky shooter! You rescue Elvis the Alien! End up on a Spaceship in the original! What are your thoughts? Do you think they've taken PD in a vastly different direction? Less wacky/less Mature? Thanks as always for my favorite weekly show! Cheers! (or, for Alex, Prost! 🥨🍻🇩🇪)

Hi Alex, John and Richard, Strange that MS/Xbox announced Cloud Gaming coming to Amazon Fire devices in July, just after a newly discovered patent related to the canceled Xbox Keystone streaming console, showing that it had a Xbox controller pairing button, HDMI & USB ports and was to sit under a TV and stream games via Xbox Game Pass. It really does seem that MS/Xbox want to be out of (proper consoles) hardware? Also Amazon published games on Game Pass day one?

FrametimeSommelier

Hi DF Crew. This week dropped a trailer for a game I never heard before. Alkahest, an upcoming 1st person action RPG. I have to say, this trailer blew me away. The interactivity of the world they show off in this trailer is awesome and is basically everything I'm hoping for the next Elders Scroll. Do you think this game is the real deal? I have to admit, I'm kinda excited.

Aliasing Anonymous

Do you have any theories for why technical shortcomings seem to factor so little into most reviews? Sadly, I wasn’t at all surprised to read reviews on PC-centric sites for Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Erdtree with nary a mention of performance issues. This is a technical medium - can anyone imagine film critics not mentioning that the new Star Wars movie stutters whenever a character activates a lightsaber or walks to a new environment? It’s one thing to say these issues won’t affect the score, but to not even write about them strikes me as a big disservice to readers. I’m left wondering whether reviewing games renders many immune to most issues, since one Erdtree reviewer said the DLC “runs fine for me on an RTX 3070/i5-12600K rig save for a rare stutter here or there.” Thanks to Alex’s testing, we know that can’t be the case. Do you think technical issues aren’t given their due in reviews (or review scores)? If so, why do you think that’s the case?

Meatdreams

John talking about the CRT-like motion clarity in the Quest 3 makes me wonder how a *virtual* CRT would look in the headset (e.g., in something like EmuVR, which looks like a VR wrapper for RetroArch). I’m curious if an app like this paired with a Quest 3 could serve as any sort of a stand-in for people wanting to experience old games with something close to CRT motion clarity without a real, meatspace CRT.

Mr Bespoke

Hi Rich! Did it ever annoy you to write an article in the Sega Saturn about a up coming game which seemed to have full of promice and not get a western realese? And where you the one responsible for the Kasumi from Dead Or Alive center fold with tag line "Simply the Breast!" in issue 26?

yogi

There's been very little marketing surrounding FSR 3.1. Why do you think that is? I tried it on sony's games and it seems to work really well on my RTX 3080.

Eric Benoit

Hello everyone, the PS3 on PS5 rumors are back after a short hiatus. Given the fact that PS2 emulation on the PS5 is underwhelming at best, what could be a reasonable expectation of PS3 emulation on the PS5 or the PS5 Pro? Wouldn't it be better to simply rerelease some choice PS3 titles with a modest upscale or would that be cost prohibitive?

TCPhoenix

Hello DF Guys! I love your weekly videos! I have a question I’ve been wanting to ask forever! When the Series X came out, on paper it clearly had more power than the PlayStation 5 but out the gate, it’s been out performed quite often. Originally the it was said the developers had dev kits early and that gave the PS 5 an advantage but it’s been years now and it’s still trailing! What’s the haps? Surely they should have caught up with how to use the hardware by now?!

Plasma4Life

Good'ay Gents! I watched Tom's excellent Shadow of the Erdtree review, in which he reminds us that there is a way of getting the game to run at 60fps through back-compat. I am wondering if there is a second method of achieving this. Would hooking a PS5 to a 1080p display(such an HD TV) force the game to render at that resolution? Or would it still internally attempt to render at a higher resolution? This is a question I been dying to know about all games in general. Would hooking a modern console to 1080 display, force those games to render at lower resolution, thus potentially gaining framerate at the cost of resolution?

Someguyperson

With the performance results of the Elden Ring DLC in, what games have you personally persevered through despite their awful technical performance? I think Elden Ring is one of my favorite games ever, despite the obvious & blatant technical issues. Should people not play a game just because it has technical issues?

Someguyperson

Regarding upcoming unannounced Switch 2 games, there has been a mainline Pokémon game released every 3 years barring 2 (Diamond/Pearl & Black/White in 2006 & 2010 respectively for a 4 year gap). 2025 would be the deadline for a new Pokémon game so do you think it would be a cross-gen title, or a Switch 2 exclusive considering just how bad Scarlett & Violet performance is on the current Switch? Extra context (don't read) - There hasn't ever been 3 mainline Pokémon generations on one console, so this would be a first for Pokémon history, if the new game also comes out on Switch.

Someguyperson

Regarding upcoming unannounced Switch 2 games, do you think we could see path traced Minecraft & Quake II? I think those would provide the punch people want out of a next-gen game and something that can really only be done on a modern Nvidia GPU, yet each is a lot easier to run than Cyberpunk (although that also might come to Switch 2, which would also be a bit stunning on a Nintendo console). Do you think there would be other existing raytracing focused games that Nintendo could drop in the first year of the Switch 2?

Someguyperson

No matter how powerful you make a console, developers will always get a game to fully maximize what the system can push at a cool 30 FPS. As has been said many times, 30 FPS is a design choice as is using the full UE5 feature set. The next thing will always run everything faster and there will always be next-gen software that pushes the new hardware to the limit.

Someguyperson

I think Steam will absolutely come out with a he console and it will likely use a "Strix Point Halo" APU. I feel that's what those high wattage parts were made for originally.

Someguyperson

The components will be just fine if you keep them clean and if you ensure nothing can short a component on a board while you're running the system. A spill from a glass of water while the system is running will surely bring doom to your components if they're just out in the open. A metal shaving could also fry a board, so that's you you need to be concerned with mostly.

Someguyperson

Nvidia is investing a lot into all kinds of machine learning, so I think things could go that way, although they could also go the way of abstracting out meshes & textures altogether and just generate images every frame from all the given inputs. I think Nvidia is just investing in every possible future so they can ensure they'll be on top of it, no matter what change happens in the industry.

Someguyperson

The biggest thing here is that they could easily hit a solid 60 FPS if they bumped the lower bounds of performance mode to 1080p, but they simply chose not to do so. On the console front, From Software's issue is simply a question of what resolution to run at, which is a question they have never been able to answer properly. That's on the director and the project leads, it's a technical question they should be able to answer fairly easily.

Wicca

Hey DF team, A genuine question and a bit of feedback. I watched your review of the Elden Ring DLC and noticed Alex's critique of FromSoftware's technical performance, where he mentioned that they "need to stop releasing things of such poor technical quality given how much money they bring in and how much money the product demands." As someone who's been in the industry for years, I have a genuine question since I'm not aware of your backgrounds. Do you guys have some actual data on how much these kinds of games demand or know how much it costs to hire and retain skilled technical experts and programmers, especially those proficient in optimizing open-world games? Because from my understanding, considering the immense costs associated with polishing and optimizing such games, coupled with the financial struggles, layoffs, and studio closures plaguing the industry, FromSoftware seems to be making a sensible decision. By prioritizing gameplay and fun over technical side of things, they ensure that their games remain engaging and unique. I understand that as a technical review team, it's your job to highlight performance issues, but maybe consider toning down the harshness of your negative reviews, at least until the industry gets back on its feet. The essence of gaming, after all, is about fun and immersion, and FromSoftware consistently delivers on those fronts. Thank you for all the great reviews and analysis. They are invaluable to the community. Have a nice weekend. Cheers.

lbb12

Hello Rich and DF Team! At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I don't know anyone else who can answer this question more reliably than you guys, so that is why I won't give up in my question being answered... I was hoping by the time a game like Metro Exodus and NVIDIA's open sourcing PhysX awhile ago (as well as continual extinction of dev support for it) that an AMD GPU user/based console would allow the use of its features by now, or am I wrong? Will we ever see a PhysX enhanced title run with those features turned ON for AMD someday (patched-in/updated to run)? Maybe a 'PhysX wrapper' (remember 3DFx Glide Wrappers for non-3DFx card owners?) As mentioned previously, the Batman Arkham series of games are a great example of a title that just seems lacking without the PhysX features, but complete with it (lookup 'Zogrim' on Youtube for best examples). I sincerely appreciate your input 😄

Perfect_Organism

I get your point, but I’d argue given how the game looks, this should be running at a flawless 4K/60 on the consoles imo.

digitalfoundry

99% of the time it just downscales 4K so it's the same. There are occasional exceptions to the rule.

VeryProfessionalDodo

A counter argument to your point would be that, to some, those technical shortcomings are enough to ruin the fun and immersion of the experience. Some people are just "blind" to those issues and can't really see it, but to others, stutters and judder are enough to distract the user from having fun and being immersed. I happen to fall into the latter camp unfortunately, so for me it's disappointing to see a game I'm excited to play be hampered by technical problems, and we shouldn't see what is an otherwise phenomenal game by brought down by these issues. If anything, I'm glad there is Digital Foundry to be respectfully negative, because it's more common to be either extremely positive ("this is the greatest game of all time"), or overwhelmingly negative ("this is the stupidest crap I've ever played"). To have something in between is valuable.

VeryProfessionalDodo

Adults with small hands, join me in my attack to this fellow Patreon user, huzzah! In all seriousness, there are a myriad controller options, especially when you consider companies like 8bitdo or Hori, so you might have to stray away from the big three console makers here

cuicuit

So 8bitdo is smaller than an XBox controller!

Ali Antiasing

Hi DF. What games do you think would benefit from changing engines in terms of goals that their devs are trying to achieve? For example many fans argued KCD would have been a better game overal if it was made using Unreal engine. Thank you for your service gentlemen.

Wicca

I completely understand where you're coming from, and I also appreciate what Digital Foundry does. Just to clarify, my question was not rhetorical; it was a genuine inquiry to see if they have any revenue or game development cost data to back up their point about FromSoftware needing to shift their focus to technical improvements. From what I've seen, the tech side of game dev is quite costly and might not be financially justifiable to reinvest in, especially for a DLC. Also, as someone who works on the art side of game dev, I also get annoyed by slightest visual artifacts and issues. However, whether we like it or not, FromSoftware has a success formula in this challenging industry, which basically sacrifices state-of-the-art technical quality for other elements that the Souls games fanbase enjoys (I'm not one, so I'm not sure). Of course, pointing out technical shortcomings "respectfully," as you mentioned, would be constructive, but not taking the harsh tone of saying this company should stop releasing games of such poor technical quality and similar remarks.

The Shadow-Map

What episode of Star Trek does Rich own the script to, and why? On that note, the Reapers and the Borg have entered the solar system and there is only one ship to take them on. Who do you have at command, Picard or Shepard?

Christian Albustin

Hello there! As texture upscaling emerged as a possible dlss4 feature: what could be the benefits of that? Would developers be able to produce less high-res assets to save money and time because dlss4 would do the trick? Would 8GB of graphics ram be enough again? And what about the Switch 2?

Plasma4Life

Thank you for the reply. After some thought, I question whether that is a correct statement. Fundamentally, games historically only create frame buffers as large as the supported resolution on the device being run. In the case of a console, in the settings for PS5, under Screen & Video, you can set the resolution to 1080p and lower.

Tõnis Juhkam

I had a brain wave. Digital games going bye bye Digital games licensing fees to rightsholder require subscription based moneyflow. This makes good reason to stop digital game sell. Around 4-5 years digital game. Carbon copy is LTS aka long time support. Digital copy is bleading edge. DLC aka downloadable content is canary aka Nightly build. Maybe collectors can order carbon copy after digital copy expires. If Gold Disk aka mass production ready version of game gets distributed and any mass copy gets cracked it becomes cracked Gold Disk and value goes to zero dollars / euros. Digital game removes mass production copies. Digital games do not get destroyed like 1950s consept cars. Intelectual property is still kept with source code aka blueprints in-house. That is how remakes are made or sequels. Downloads have gone to digital aka stream to hard disk or ssd. Streaming gameplay with low latency is next frontier. If console is market share. Then make games universal: x86, console, arm, AI based chips. So market reach gets bigger with each supported sub-market. Exclusive is out, inclusive is in right now. If we can have LTS operating systems why we can not have LTS digital games? Mostly nobody destroyes their own source code. If they make too good product it will outlast next generation or iteration, look product end of Life cycle. How much money is fair to collector LTS digital game? Limited run, proof of audenticity.
