Well, here it is. Sony made a 65GB ProRes version of the PlayStation 5 Reveal video available to press. While we don't have the bandwidth to share that file, we can produce an extremely high quality second generation copy for you to enjoy with the absolute minimum in quality loss. And here it is.

The YouTube video above - once fully resolved - should have a quality advantage over the live stream version currently available, but really, it's all about the downloads. This is important stuff, so bandwidth billed be damned - this particular piece of bonus material is available all Supporters.

PlayStation 5 Pro Reveal: The Mark Cerny Presentation

This video is a YouTube re-encode of a 65GB ProRes file that Sony made available to journalists. You can download ultra high bitrate h.264 and HEVC versions on digitalfoundry.net

Out of curiosity, can you share a screenshot comparison of the two? Just one screenshot of each would be neat!

Parzival

Could this be the opportunity for an even higher quality AV1 encode?

Allan Lindqvist

Maybe you can do a short video or df direct segment where you take screenshots from the prores video, zoom in and examine their ps5/pro comparisons in more detail

MaxedIt

Thank you so much! I hoped something like this would happen.

Interesting thing I noticed upon rewatch is that there’s a tiny snippet of Hogwarts Legacy running at 60fps from 8:18 to 8:21 – I verified this by going frame-by-frame. It’s just a panning shot inside the castle (not actual gameplay), but it’s weird that specific clip is 60fps while everything else shown was 30fps

digitalfoundry

I don't think it would get much better than this to be honest.

Takeshino

Ah, cheers, that is neat.

ConcreteLlama

What on earth is up with the way they decide to show full screen comparison footage for 2 seconds before showing a more selective comparison in a tiny window?

ConcreteLlama

It really was quite a crap presentation wasn't it? I was definitely curious about the system before it was announced but nothing in the video made me excited for it and they didn't really demonstrate it very well at all. Based solely on this I don't think I'd consider it even at a reasonable price with a disc drive (but I'm sure they have plenty of content to properly demonstrate its value in the pipeline, and I'm sure it'll be a very impressive, capable and worthwhile machine).

Ken Bradford

To me anything can justify its price you just have to sell it to me

I'm travelling at the moment, so I won't be downloading this - but as a general point I really appreciate this kind of commitment to sharing high-quality footage with supporters, and if I had more than a mobile connection, I'd be jumping right on it. Thank you for taking the time (and bandwidth) to share.

GetFisher

have you considered making the prores version available through a torrent? or would sony not like this

David Ruppelt

I didn't watch the original, so I didn't have the bad visuals to distract me from the audio. What's up with that? The difference in Marks voice between the cuts was very distracting and the room tone at times was plain bad.

someone

the way it should have been shown in the first place, thanks!

GenM

It actually doesn't require pixel peeping to see the added resolution even for the HEVC version. I have to admit, if somebody told me they wanted to have the best graphics but didn't want to spend an absolute fortune, I'd actually have a pretty hard time not recommending the PS5 Pro over a PC. I'd get one myself if I didn't already have a PS5 and a PC with a 4080 in it. I just hope that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 either comes to PC or early into PS6 so I can play it above 30 FPS in a nice smooth 60 or better as close to 4K as possible.

Jamie

Is there anyway to get the 65gb version

Justin Reeves

I'm in the same boat. PS5, 4080, and I was going to upgrade because I thought it would be $599 USD. But with most games coming to PC it really is just a waste of electricity for me.

Justin Reeves

Hopefully with the rumored upcoming Playstation Showcase we get some glimpses into the upgrades in action.

digitalfoundry

We did a good job on the encode - it's identical to the human eye.

digitalfoundry

The encode had a lot of processing time spent on it. It's basically identical.

MOL III

Totally agree with you. I'm also in a similar boat with a PS5 and 4090 - at c£600 the PS5 Pro would have been justifiable but at over £800 (inc stand and disc drive) just not as appealing anymore. This is even more so with the chipping away at the console exclusive concept with more PS5 games coming to PC. Increasingly making PC the place to play. It is a shame the pricing on this is so poor vs what PS5 Pro offers - Ollie made a good point about Sony using this to test customers willingness to pay. In time we'll see how well it does .... still sucks though .... as a longtime Sony PS fan that has been with the PS ecosystem (bar PSVR) right from the start.
