UPDATE: Corrected video is now in. 4K video downloads should be available on Sunday morning, UK time.

In our DF Direct Special in the wake of the PlayStation 5 Pro reveal, we had much to say about the hardware, the pitch and the price - but not much to say about the games, owing to the poor media quality. Now, armed with a 65GB ProRes file of the Mark Cerny presentation, we can go deeper - much deeper - into the software that was shown and how good PSSR AI upscaling actually is. Strap in for another two hour show - and there's so much to share in this one.

If we get Star Wars outlaws optimized settings tomorrow I will be very suprised

digitalfoundry

Yeah we've been a bit busy, sorry. That video is delayed but I will post a table as soon as I can.

Ben (Snatcher42)

Think a number of shots that should be PS5 Fidelity are labeled as PS5 Performance? (TLOUp2, Rachet & Clank...)

Sven Dahlin

Great video! There is a problem though; I believe you put the wrong label on the footage on the left side between 3:27 and 4:35 as well as between 5:23 and 5:35. The footage shown on the left is in PS5 Fidelity Mode running at 30fps, but the label states "PS5 PERFORMANCE MODE". (You got it right between 7:17-7:26, between 9:12-9:17 and between 10:49-11:00, since you are using Sony's labels in those three segments)

Sven Dahlin

And the same problem with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, between 21:35-21:46, 22:03-22:15 and 22:49-22:55

Sven Dahlin

I realised now that you mentioned this problem in the post above regarding TLOUp2, but you have a similar problem in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Aaron Espinello

Also wondering why rebirth was completely omitted? Was it an oversight or no love for rebirth cause John was praising rebirth on twitter for ps5 pro

Wotans Cry

I do not like your attitude to be honest. You all appear almost hard pressed to say something positive... There many ecmxamples throughout the video but 2 examples: On Hogwarts Legacy the newly added raytracing reflection for larger bodys of water is introduced by Alex by saying something like:,, those mountain reflection on the sea in the back appear awkward and not quite right. " Thats the first thing said about the reflections. Only later in a smaller sentence mentioning that UE4 is at fault probably... Then with GT7: All i hear in the first 5minutes is :,, lower baseline resolution here , lower native resolution there" But thats how its supposed to be with ANY upscaler. You lower the native resolution, and let the upscaler do its work. If the OUTPUT resilution is then with on track reflections similar or cloae to native it is very okay. And if it is so then i expect you guys to make sure that that point is getting across. Theres already people out there misinterpreting your sayings and state on twitter ,, Alan Wake only 848p on PS5 Pro haha " I hope that this is not the spiel going forward with PS5 Pro comparisons ... Like - as you guys did in thus vid emphasize theres a lower baseline resolution again, rather than just mention it and emphasize that the resolved image is actually fine , or close to native... You guys REALLY came across hard pressed to say something positive... But oh well , gotta stop PS5 Pro's momentum somehow right? Jason Schreier has a piece out too already. Like clockwork...

Sealegs

Great video!

Ernesto González

My guess is they have another video for that one

VeryProfessionalDodo

@evan that’s not really nice. No need for that here. I don’t know about the tone they have in the Direct, but I’m interested in seeing this in a bit. Still, if you’re excited about the PS5 Pro, don’t worry too much with opinions for now, there’s a lot we still don’t know.

Ernesto González

They have plenty of positives highlighted on their video. They also need to point out the negatives, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing their job properly and would be doing a disservice to us.

digitalfoundry

Our job isn't to say nice things about PS5 Pro but to give our honest feelings about its features and performance, good and bad.

DTM

It seems @Wotans Cry is used to "reviewers" from other outlets who have publishers to please who continuously advertise on their platforms and cannot be too direct with their criticism. Base resolution does matter. Take a look at Immortals of Aveum which is 432p pre-upscaling (https://youtu.be/xVCK1j7F5sg?t=262) on Xbox Series S. If the base resolution is 848p, you are inevitably going to see low res textures, reflections, et cetera. No upscaler can help you at such a low base resolution.

BlessedRed

Great video fellas. This will give a good amount of perspective to people interested in the Pro.

Wotans Cry

So much is clear, i know that. My specific criticism is that they never mentioned if the output resolution of GT7 is close to native or simply how it looks. It can't be bad , since if so they would have mentioned it. All we have is that "lower baseline resolution yada yada" Wich in the end leaves the impression with people that IQ must be worse since they said lower baseline resolution. Wich is simply not true. And i fucking know that too low native resolution is bad for upscaling. But we are not talking 480p here ffs

Wotans Cry

Im just not a sheep. And you are not exactly a wolf either. 💋

Wotans Cry

You achieved to give your honests of feelings. Thats for sure.

Wotans Cry

So much is clear. But maybe you did not understand what i wrote . Again for GT7 - if the output resolution is good or close enough to native, there is no reason to dwell so much on any "lower baseline resolution" And it can't be bad otherwise they would have said so. What did is giving the impression to people that PS5 Pro produces much worse IQ since they said "lower baseline resolution" so often but failed to mention that PSSR clears the picture.

Sergio Sanchez

"I don't like your attitude" wth is wrong with you lmao. They're basically helping you to make an informed decision if you want to spend your money on this console. So you just want them to omit the fact that Alan Wake is running at 800p? How would that be helpful for us the viewers?

Taggen86

Ps5 pro looks like a real disappointment based on these comparisons. Where is the 1.45x compute and the 2-3 RT?!? GT need to drop res from 4k to 1080p to add quarter-res RT reflections? Horizon 2 is just upgradring the performance mode to 4k checkerboard. Wtf? This does not look like a 4070 performance-wise at all. They really should have provided devs with resources to produce more impressive ps5 pro ports than this. The only thing that I think looked good here was PSSR

Wotans Cry

Well how about telling more about the final picture rather than dwell on "baseline resolution too much" . Its okay to mention it and for sure when there is an issue with the picture. But they seem to dwell to much about that input resolution. All what counts is if the Pro patched version does look better or not.

badumtss

Calm down man. They only can work with the stuff they currently have.

Ernesto González

They did with the Ratchet comparison of PSSR vs FSR 2. For more comprehensive comparisons we all have to wait until they get their hands on the real hardware and these patched games. Patience man.

Wotans Cry

Yeah but did you not get their tone? You could easily reshoot the whole video tell all the facts not cover up anything and still retain a positive tone towards the console. Or at least neutral. They went with negative tone which is telling ..

Tobias Håkansson

Great video guys - it amazing how much of deep dive you are able to do from only seconds of footage. Ill stay with the original PS5 and my "reasonably powerful PC" with a 4090.

Tobias Håkansson

They had a positive tone and a lot of humor just as usual. Dont be butt hurt!

Wotans Cry

They absolutely did not have a positive tone. My critique is correct.

Liar of Partinel

That bit about just keeping the PS5 throughout all of the next generation as the Series S equivalent is actually really interesting, and seems plausible to me. Lord knows we've kept the PS4 for long enough into this one, and the PS6 is *bound* to have a smaller leap in capabilities than between the 4 and 5.

Ernesto González

I didn’t notice any “tone”, I think you are upset for no reason, calm down and wait for more details in the upcoming weeks 😅

Eric Benoit

I don't know if it's because I'm getting older but every Console release reaction from players seems to get a bit saltier. Looking forward and dreading the Switch 2 release. You guys are the best.

Taggen86

Tobias we all know u are one of those gamers that will buy it regardless :) stop pretending. You want those shiny new things.

who, me ...

I was quite excited about the Pro, and considered updating my launch unit, not anymore. The slow GPU, no disc, no stand, horrible game base resolution and the so called AI up-scalling are making this by far the worst console Sony has ever made. This is shockingly bad for the price.

Lee Wilson

They really could have included the stand, I agree on that.

OculusVigil89

Wonder if GTA 6 would able to handle running at upscale 4k 40 - 50 fps with or without RT on PS5 Pro version if devs choose to do so?
