To quote Commando: come on, let's paaaarty. Yes, it's time for us to appeal to our glorious Supporter base for #content for inclusion in the next episode of DF Direct Weekly, filming tomorrow!

We'll be talking about that Switch 2 leak, we'll be discussing Sony rebuffing Intel in favour of AMD for PlayStation 6 and we'll be doing some tests for you. Does the Dragon's Dogma 2 patch really improve CPU-limited results? Ahead of more involved #content, what's the score with the Dead Rising remaster? We'll also be discussing AMD leaving high-end GPUs behind for RDNA 4 and John might have some choice words about the Lollipop Chainsaw remaster.

Anything else you'd like us to cover? Failing that, you are requested and required to offer up questions for anything and everything in the empty box that is - per the norm - 'below'.

Thanks!

Yes, I know the quote's from Commando, not Predator. But the correction probably didn't make it out to the email :(

Do you thing the Switch 2 will have HDR support?

Ildar Nurislamov

Hi! You’ve mentioned that PSSR takes 2ms of 16ms frame rendering budget. I’m curious. If that is dedicated hardware, shouldn’t it work asynchronously? E.g pssr upscale 1st frame while GPU rendering 2nd? The same about DLSS

Peter Karadimas

With AMD hinting that FSR 4.0 could be an AI based, is this the next big leap valve was looking for in a second Steamdeck? Similarly, how impactful do you think DLSS will be for the Switch 2?

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

Do you think MS should sell its Xbox hardware business and get back to its software development roots? In this world of make-believe, who would the DF team want to take over Xbox?

Julián Oroza

Not really a question but I would cry tears of holy joy at the prospect of a 4K60 PS5 Pro patch for Arkham Knight, Ac Unity, Bloodborne and Red Dead 2. Is there any hope of this digital revolution?

Charlie Pearce

Do we think Nintendo will market the new systems as switch² ? Switch Squared? Can you even see the superscript "2" symbol on here? I bet they do. Just to be annoying.

Hobobench

Hello DF Crew! With the Switch 2 potentially having a greater disparity in clock speeds between docked mode and handheld mode, do you think it is possible that we could see more differences in performance other than image quality? (e.g. Certain games that run at 60fps in docked mode and 30fps in handheld)? Thanks!

José Francisco Rosado

Hello Digital Foundryiers! With Switch 2 using NVIDIA cpu/gpu can we take for granted that players will enjoy DLSS amazing reconstruction and probably framegen, right? That means, the new console could render graphics up to Xbox Series S with no hazle! Or it can't? What do you guys think?

I'm still confused about the enhancements the PS5 Pro could bring to "8.500 PS4 games" as Sony announced it. If it's just a boost mode, I don't see how the Pro could do better than the regular PS5 for PS4 games, except maybe for a couple of games. So why the hell would they mention "8.500 games"?? Could they have a magic trick up their sleeve to allow us to enhance resolution and framerate? Something like Microsoft did with the FPS and Resolution Boosts... but on 8.500 games? That would be incredible. How possible could that be in your opinion? Wait, what was that noise? Oh man, millions of gamers have heard what I said and are running towards me holding pitch-forks and screaming "BLOODBORNE 4K/60!!". Please send help! Yaaargh...

Hi DF crew, Rainbow Six Siege recently dropped Vulkan API support in favour of DX12, claiming it better positions the game for the future. Do you agree that DX12 is a better choice for future proofing, and do you have any insights as to why the DX12 version suffers from microstuttering, in a way the Vulkan version never did? Cheers!

captainbridger

Hello, gents. It’s my understanding that consoles largely avoid #stutterstruggle by having precompiled shaders. With PS5 Pro having a slightly different GPU than base PS5 will existing titles need shader cache updates to be utilized on the Pro’s GPU?

Having an AI-neurysm

Now that we’ve seen PSSR in action, what games are you hoping get an update to take advantage? Personally I’m hoping for Returnal – the *native 1080p -> temporal reconstructed to 1440p -> checkerboarded 4K* setup on PS5 never really looked good to me, so any improvement to that would be fantastic. Also adding back in the motion blur option that was removed in the Day 1 patch as well as enabling VRR support (currently disabled on PS5 even when forcing it in system settings) would be very welcome upgrades. Thanks for the #content this week

Rumored specs put Switch 2 at PS4 levels of performance. Will the Switch 2 be in a position of missing out on some current-generation games again? Do you think DLSS will help the console come closer to the current gen?

1040STF

On the form factor, I feel like the Switch 2 leak is quite plausible, isn't it? There's no much risk here, it's easy to market to families as "bigger, better but familiar", which check the boxes of Nintendo looking for a safe transition between the two machines while keeping the cash flow from accessories thanks to the new joy-cons. Actually, this is quite an impressive safe balance between old and new for a new console. I wonder though if we're not looking at a very long generation shift there too. What do you think?

Phazonmasher

Hello gentlemen of the digital foundry! With Sony opting for their own hardware-based AI upscaler with PSSR and their presentation not really doing a good job of showcasing it, do you see a world where AMD is maybe suggesting Sony not go too hard on showing the difference lest FSR look even worse? Thanks as always for the content!©

Ryan Seymour

Having just got around to playing Starfield, I’m slack jawed at the HDR implementation. It’s the best I’ve ever seen. Considering ‘good’ HDR has been few and far between in gaming I feel it should be celebrated and I wonder if you guys agree with me that Starfield has the ‘best’ HDR in gaming? If not, what’s better? Cheers!

Snorlax cat

with more footage emerging of ps5 pro, do you view the price as being fair now?

Does John have any insight on Japanese patent law re: the Palworld lawsuit?

1040STF

(lot of inspiring topics this week) Through the leak of the choice of AMD for the Playstation 6 processor, we heard that backward compatibility was "essential" for Sony on their next console. Doesn't it sound like a total shift? I remember them saying they did the PS5 backward compatible to PS4 games just "for pleasing the fans" or something like that. Could that mean that Sony realized how long a change of generation is those days? Do you think they expect the transition from PS5 to PS6 to be as long if not longer than from PS4 to PS5? Smells like hell, isn't it?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half Fortnight Gents - Has anyone been able to confirm the process node for the PS5 Pro - some have reported it's 4nm, but I can't find anything concrete. Any word from your sources? Assuming someone does know what node it's on - what implications is this likely to have? I'm very curious about the boost clock architecture / thermals / and how that potentially plays into a smaller node. Isn't this kind of "thermal throttle" boost clock architecture more ripe for node shrinks than fixed clocks?

Hey guys, thanks for providing amazing content. What are your thoughts about streaming platforms such as Twitch and Youtube and their effect on the recent decline of video game sales? It's been going on for years, but people can watch entire playthroughs of new and old game releases instead of buying the game themselves. Sure, a few will find interest and buy the game anyway but the majority probably won't. It's a great way for people less fortunate who can't afford games to still enjoy them, and I don't think that should be taken away. But the revenue made from streaming will only go to the streamer and the streaming platform, not the publisher and game developer. Do you think the gaming industry could be healthier if a percentage of the streaming revenue was given to the people who actually made them?

Malson

Good time of day! Like everyone else on the gaming corner of the intertubes, I've seen these Switch 2 renders, and I don't know about you folks, but to me it seems very un-Nintendo to release what would be effectively a spec bump in the same line of hardware, especially after what will be 8 years of a console's lifespan. The way I see it, Nintendo just wouldn't be Nintendo if they weren't planning on introducing some new, innovative "way to play" like they've historically done for each new hardware release; if you agree, given the context of these leaks, do you have any theories as to what that might be, or what you'd like to see? Thanks for your time and for your hard work!

andre surles

Bennet forgives you, but no one else.

Xilon Xiao

Hello DF crew! After Cerny mentioned that 3/4 of people picks performance mode if given the coice, and considering how every game that launches with quality mode only on console brings the heated discussion over 60 fps, do you think there is a chance that Sony and MS might be pursuing, for next the gen, a console architecture that are more "friendly" to high frame-rates than what we saw with past generations?

Esteban

Given the somewhat surprising statistic that 3/4 of players are choosing performance mode on PS5, why do you think so many developers seem to prioritize the 30fps mode instead during development, only to then end up with performance modes that don’t lock to 60fps or look awful? You would imagine they have access to the same kind of telemetry data Sony does. It basically makes the idea of the Pro (devs want higher quality at 30 but players 60fps) a situation born out of poor development choices rather than actual hardware needs.

Jonathan Hamilton

What benefits if any do you expect the PS5 Pro to bring to the PlayStation Portal?

DEE BATCH

Thank you Digital Foundry for the PS5 Pro Coverage. I don't understand why this outlet does not have a PS5 Pro in hand. Do you expect to receive one before launch? I also would like to know if you think any PS5 Pro modes will allow native res without PSSR at high to ultra settings. Based on Paper specs it's a very capable 1440p native res GPU. Gamers seemed to be confused about how PSSR AI truly makes an image resolve at 4k quality. Can you break down the difference between ML AI from a lower 864p to say 1080p resolution? Thank you.

andre surles

Mid Gen... Could we see the return of console add ons and pc like upgrades in the future rather than full replacement?

Phil

Hi DF crew, I was hoping that machine learning upscaling would ultimately reduce the cost of future consoles. Using smaller GPUs and lower native resolutions to save on hardware costs (imagine Series S like spec with a pssr solution). Is this a realistic thought or are manufacturing costs now simply too high to go back?

Someguyperson

Steve from Gamers Nexus made some wild claims this week while discussing the PS5 Pro. He said, "A $5000 gaming PC can't play games at 8K","for the vast majority of things you would need to play at 8K in order to qualify as an 8K gaming PC, it's not possible", "8K is not, like a real spec", and "If you're saying 8K gaming, in our opinion, it has to be able to render at 7680 X 4320 natively. Doing so with upscaling doesn't count, that's BS. When you say '8K gaming' it implies native." All of this anti-upacaling sentiment is fairly pervasive online, yet you guys have shown time & time again that upscaling algorithms are practically required for the future of rendering and that's it's idiotic to say upscaling produces "fake pixels" because 99% of all rendering is faked in the first place. Since you guys have worked with Steve in the past, could you please set him straight so he stops spreading misinformation? I mean, the PS5 Pro footage of PSSR upscaled 1080p vs. native 4k rendering in FFVII Rebirth should clearly show that upscaling is absolutely the way to go, but it seems that some people online simply don't have fully functioning eyes or something. I'm sure it's the same people who can't see any stutter in a UE 4 game.

Esteban

FSR2 on console is terrible. Having said that, Balanced or Quality mode on PC are not that far off from DLSS or XeSS outside of specific issues. So given that on the PS5 Pro developers will have the extra horsepower to push a higher base resolution and therefore not use Performance or Ultra Performance FSR2, do you still expect to see a massive difference against PSSR? I still think it’s great Sony is doing it so they don’t have to rely on AMD, but given PSSR will only work on PS5, I imagine many devs will keep choosing FSR simply because of the simplicity of that being something they have to implement elsewhere anyway.

Someguyperson

What do you guys make of Nintendo suing Palwarld for patent violation? How do you see that mattering compared to a trademark or copyright violation?

Jonathan Hamilton

Any chance of a video revisiting the myriad graphics modes of Ghostwire: Tokyo once the PS5 Pro hits?

RAVE_DAM0S

Hola DF Dudes! With the future of Xbox being closely aligned with PC, do you envision a unified Games Store (for both Xbox and PC) or the continuef existence of an Xbox Console Store and a Windows Store (that contains games). Thanks mates!

Jonny_5a

Based on these leaked specs how do you think switch 2 (the switchening) will compare with the pc handhelds like steam deck/Rog ally? Do I dare hope a console OS will help performance?

TheMightyEthan

Hey DF! With Jedi Survivor being "improved, but still poor" I can't help but wonder if it released in this state if it would still have been the worst AAA PC release of 2023, or if something else would have taken that title. Why is Respawn failing so utterly to fix its problems, when we know other developers have been able to address similar issues? It doesn't appear to be for lack of effort. Thanks for your insight as always!

Wez OOSH! (WOOSH)

Hi DF team, or should I say OOSH! Just wanted to ask a question, with Sony essentially shipping their own A.I technology (PSSR) do you think Microsoft will finally bring their long awaited (and teased) upscaling method for the new consoles, or could it even be added in the current ones? With Microsoft not shipping a mid-gen refresh it not only would make sense, but I'd imagine all the flack that the series S gets from people they would've already implemented it to aid development for the system to be not a "burden" considering these consoles will be the only ones released until 2028 apart from special edition revised models. Love the content!

Daniel

Any idea if the PS5 Pro will support M.2 SSDs like the PS5 does? That would be great, as I have a 2TB M.2 SSD installed at the moment.

Abandoned Walnut

I confess to having been one of the many people jumping on the "look what pc you could buy for the price of a PS5 pro" bandwagon. Listening to your recent discussion on this has made me reconsider the value of this line of thinking particularly in terms of who the target audience of the ps5 pro really is. However, if there was a Venn diagram of console and pc gamers they do overlap and as both a PS5 and pc owner I sit in the overlapping area of said Venn diagram. Being in this area I have two questions. Firstly, is there really much point these days in owning both a decent gaming pc and a console. I'm thinking not, but happy to be convinced otherwise. Secondly, as someone who still generally prefers pc gaming, do you think Microsoft will ever release software to make my pc gaming experience more like that of a console gamer!? As someone who plays from my sofa I'd really love it if windows would just boot straight into some sort of menu like you get on consoles, that I can navigate on my controller. I don't know how much of a niche case I am but surely there are others with an interest in this? Cheers.

Adam Ford

Something like Steam Big Picture mode on Bootup? Just install Steam OS on your gaming PC and enjoy. Thats a configurable setting in SteamOS.

DaJaCo (Dan)

In addition to the Switch 2 leaks this week, i.e. the hardware parts images and 3D renders - there were also some very detailed specs for the various components. The SOC was listed as "GMLX30-R-A1" - is there anything in this naming that might give clues as to whether it is still based on T239 (or something else), and if it is - then does it tell us anything else at all?

Wotans Cry

Hello Guys - i play on PS5 (soon PS5 Pro) but i play aswell on PC. There mostly Total War Warhammer 3. It is soo good. Now as for my question : do you guys think a PS5 port of said Game would be possible? I game with a Ryzen 5 5600 / RTX 3060 which gives me mostly stable 60fps with a mix of low, medium and high settings at 1080p. So do you guys think a PS5 port would be possible even with a bit lower settings if needed - playing that game on my LG C1 would be a dream !! Cheers 🍻

Napoleon Blownapart

Hello DF dudes! First time write-in. With the latest look at FF7: Rebirth on the Pro vs the base PS5, the results are impressive! Can we expect to see updates to PSSR like 1.1, 1.2, etc.? If so, what could we expect? Motion Stability? Improved Temporal Consistency? Reduced render time? Thank you, good sirs!

Abhi

Do you think FSR2 / TAAU would be a worthwhile addition for FF7 Rebirth on ps5? Based on the great results with PSSR on Pro , it seems like a lot of issues are coming from its way of doing AA. If so, would a res drop to accommodate the extra frame time needed for upscaling be worth it?

Xbox Ally Has Gone ROGue!

Good morning Fellas! Lumen is a great addition and wholesome solution for raytraced reflection and GI for unreal engine games. But a section from DF Direct #179 made me think - is Lumen's quality on latest games rather underwhelming compared to more BESPOKED realtime RT solutions found on other in-house engines? I recently revisited some early NVidia sponsored Turing raytracing games and found the reflection quality at least was better than Lumen soup with a more demure performance footprint (BFV, Wolfenstein Youngblood).

Xbox Ally Has Gone ROGue!

With the seeming-confirmation of Horizon Zero Dawn getting a PS5 remaster, what are some other last-gen games you would love to see having a bespoke current gen version with upgrades? Personally, I would really hope FF15 gets a native version on PS5/XboxSeries consoles.

Daniel

Awesome, thank you for the link 🙂

Xbox Ally Has Gone ROGue!

What would happen in the world where none of DLSS, FSR2/3, XeSS or PSSR exist, but PS5 and Xbox Series consoles still released with their true-life specs?

Nuwa

Honestly my only real fear with the Switch 2 on a hardware level (besides joycon drift) is quite literally on regards on the micro sd slot. Considering how the fastest microsd cards are 104mbs and are way slower than the internal ssd, the two options are really just, excluding certain games from being downloaded onto the micro sd or letting people suffer with bad loading like when you play alan wake 2 on a hdd, which one would be more likely nintendo would do considering there seems to be no plans to have a 512gb/1tb sku on switch 2

DyeHardX86

Hello Digital Foundrymen, with the news of PS6 apparently returning to AMD for SOC design and Manufacture in large part due to Backward Compatibility, its claimed, do you think it likely that Microsoft also returns to AMD or does Xboxs Emulation open them up to more options for SOC Vendors? Thank you for the excellent work!

ChowYunMatt

Hey DF! I've been a huge fan of y'all for years, loving the Patreon after finally joining. The end of the console wars is in sight? With Xbox Series Y, PS6 and Switch 2 all rumored to go in different directions, it seems as though hostilities might finally be ceasing. I never thought I would see any possible peace in my lifetime. I'd love to hear your thoughts on which of the console skirmishes you think could be defined as full-out "wars" vs. just skirmishes. I'm personally a veteran of the Sega Genesis (Megadrive) vs. SNES war. Is that CW1? Saturn, PS1 and N64 is CW2? Would a possible hybrid PC/Xbox finally draw the neutral kingdom of PC into the fray?

ChowYunMatt

Yeah I would love a rest mode on PC. I've gotten through SO many games on my Steam Deck simply because I could jump instantly into them. I know a 2 minute load for a game seems trivial, but it adds up.

VeryProfessionalDodo

As someone who desperately wants to have a Steam Deck on the living room, it’s just not there yet with NVIDIA. Slightly regret not going with AMD

VeryProfessionalDodo

People still fight over resolution like it’s the PS3 / 360 days, when what really matters is image quality. I’d much prefer a 1080p image upscaled to 4K with DLSS than 1440p with TAA

Someguyperson

If you look at the Switch 2 "leak", it seems that the Joy-Con simply snap in from the sides instead of sliding into the body, which lines up with some prior rumors, but it's still fairly unknown as to how stable that would be. Nevertheless, do you think the new console will be called the "Nintendo Snap" as a result of the new attachment method? I hope they don't use the Switch branding again. It really hurt them when they made the Wii U and people thought it was just a different Wii model.

VeryProfessionalDodo

As someone who had a Portal, pretty much none in terms of image quality, but if games run smoother or at higher frame rates, you will feel that over remote play.

Someguyperson

You can now pre-order the 2TB Xbox Series X in "Galaxy Black" for $600. If this is the best Microsoft can provide, why is everyone up in arms about the PS5 Pro pricing, when it's just $100 more for the same 2TB of storage and much better performance? It's almost like people on the internet are extraordinarily reactionary or something.

VeryProfessionalDodo

I think Gran Turismo 7 is also wildly impressive, but I’m glad the Starfield one is also great!

VeryProfessionalDodo

I would love to believe it, but I’m confident they would have shown it at the presentation, since that would be transformative… wouldn’t they? I don’t know, that presentation was way too short on a potentially very interesting piece of kit

OzzyBrit2000

Howdy Partners. Phil Spencer says he can see the future when referring to the Xbox and in particular allowing third-party stores on the Xbox platform. Assuming steam is one of these, I struggle to see how this benefits Xbox because surely gamers will buy the PC version on Steam because the PC version typically costs less and has free multiplayer, not to mention the excellent SteamDeck. Xbox would be sacrificing their revenue cut as the platform holder, often quoted as 30 percent for third parties. How do you see the revenue split if Xbox allows other stores? How does this work in Xbox’s favour? Unlike Phil, I can’t see it, help me understand. Thanks.

Rich

The venn diagram definitely overlaps and has become if anything MORE converged over the past 10 years, as various statistics showing gamers moving from consoles to PCs show (eg Steam concurrent users, total Nvidia GeForce users, etc.). Yes, it is relatively more rare to hook a PC up to a TV - although even there many new gaming PCs sold are laptops with HDMI output - but data shows that many PS5s and Xboxes are themselves hooked up to gaming monitors in bedrooms, not TVs in the living room! PC definitely directly competes with console for the gamer dollar, no question.

Samson

Hey DF Brethren After picking up God of War Ragnarok on PC. it looks like we have yet another banger of a PC port of a Sony property and it is not from Nixxes but a collaboration between Jetpack Interactive and Santa Monica Studios . With the exception of Horizon: Zero Dawn's launch. how is it possible for Sony to continuously deliver in a industry plagued by ports with #StutterStruggle?

Rich

The biggest factor is the Nvidia GPU, hands down.

Bust In Furman

Hello DF. What would you say is the likelihood that we'll get a 40fps mode for GTA VI on PS4 Pro? Could it really be the case that GTA is so CPU-bound that the Pro's extra 45% GPU power combined with a potentially lower internal render resolution compensated for by PSSR isn't enough for a stable 40fps performance mode?

The Knight Who Says Ni!

Hey Rich, not gaming related but I curious to know if you have checked out Samsung's range of "Bespoke AI products"? Do they meet the DF standard of being Bespoke?

Dan Matte

Thanks to Tom for covering the Visions of Mana demo a while back. By any chance would it be possible to cover the final game at some point, including the PS5 version? Thanks for all you do.

tod weitzel

Any insight on what broke the logjam on the Capcom Fighting Collections coming to Xbox? Did Microsoft blink and allow more Xbox One code to be shipped or did Capcom finally go back and modify MT Framework?

JamesD

Hello DF Team! Somehow, Alex returned to Jedi Survivor. My question to Alex: do tools and settings exist in UE4 to solve the issues *still* present in the game? If yes, can he speculate as to why Respawn aren't using them? Are there other games developed on UE4 that he could hold up as exemplars of good performance? Cheers!

Abandoned Walnut

Do you mean you can configure steam so it boots up first in windows or just installing the whole steam os. Issue with the latter is it just becomes an increasing faff managing non steam games (based on my experience when I had a steam deck). I'm kind of hoping xbox moving away from hardware might make them more inclined to go down the route of windows having a gaming mode so you can toggle between this and using the pc as normal. (apols, poor replying strategy here, as this was a reply to TheMagicStick).

Groovy Duck

Howdy Gents. Alex has had another great analysis of a new patch for Judder: Survivor. Once thing I noticed in the video was he did not mention or look into the impact of the removal of Denuvo DRM. It had been my pet theory that Denuvo was the reason why that game's performance struggled so much but Alex's video has disproved that. Survivor still has rather poor performance though slightly improved. I understand that the end performance impact was convoluted with other adjustments to the game. That said, can Alex or anyone else on the team now paint a more clear picture how Denuvo affects a game's performance, or at least for Jedi: Survivor? Or is Denuvo still too much of a black box that any more insights into its performance impact would be pure speculation? Thanks Gents.

Yannick Ex

Now that Sony has its own very good AI accelerated upscaler (PSSR), do you think that there is any chance they could port it to PC for their PC ports? That would be awesome for all AMD GPU and handheld (probably limited to Zen 3 and above). AMD talked about FSR 4.0 and the use of AI accelerated upscaling, but knowing AMD it might take a very long time before we see it coming with no idea of the result quality.

tod weitzel

What's the DF position on kernel level anticheat like Battleye, which notably broke GTA Online for Steam Deck this week?

Octolimar

Seeing the reaction online to ff7 rebirths new and improved image quality thanks to PSSR got me wondering how much do things like image quality really impact the average user experience? I saw many people saying "it was totally fine, stop whining" but of course we all know that isn't the truth. Is image quality really only something for the trained eye to notice? How much do artifacts impact the average user?

DezzyD

Hello gents, given the Alan Wake 2's native resolution is seeminly 864p on the Pro in performance mode, I wondering if with PSSR we should expect for still image quality to base PS5 fidelity mode levels as promised by Cerny? Seems like an awfully low starting point so would be surprised if an FF7 Rebirth level jump is on the table.

Rich

AMD just made an announcement that they have been working on FSR4 for the past 9 months or so.

Tobias Håkansson

Hello DF - any insights into were the 2-3x RT performance of PS5 Pro ended up. Looking at GT7 we have lower resolution than in original replays and therefore no 2x perfomance increase. In Ratchet perfomance is the same as original PS5 but with upscaling using PSSR. So were are my 2-3x that Cerny promised?

Pol Kallamata

What would the relationship between Sony and AMD have looked like with regards to the development of PSSR? Given AMD makes the APU that powers the PlayStation, would PSSR be a collaborative effort between the two? And if so would that mean that AMD would include PSSR cores in its future GPUs or would they separately develop their own version of ML upscaling cores that are just part of the next iteration of FSR?

Rich

We don't know which games people are choosing the performance mode on. There certainly could be types of games or specific titles in which the majority choose fidelity mode even if the 3/4 is true. I suspect that certain more cinematic types of games the split is much more even or possibly tilted in favor of Cinematic modes. Don't forget that action titles like Call of Duty and Fortnite are BY FAR more popular than even AAA cinematic games like Spiderman, so the numbers could be skewed.

xamaryllix

Hello DF! It's been ~8 months since AMD Fluid Motion Frames became available to the public and yet I never hear anyone talking about it. When used properly it can radically increase the perceived smoothness of any DX 11 and 12 game under the sun. I've been using it on Helldivers 2, Star Wars Outlaws, and Assetto Corsa Competizione to great success on my modest RX 7600 8GB - am I alone in enjoying AFMF?

Full House's John SteamOS

To quote Kindergarten Cop, no it's not a Switch 2 rumour! What's your take on the rumoured storage format of UFS 3.1? Yes it has good read speed and is non-proprietary, but it seems expensive and, despite the acronym, doesn't seem as "universal" as NVMe or SD. Have we got another Xbox storage expansion or Vita memory card on our hands?

Aliasing Anonymous

I suspect you didn’t play the TLOU1 port at release. It was arguably even more broken than HZD.

Aliasing Anonymous

It has a disc drive. PS5 pro with one is still $200 more expensive.

Rich

I don't think there is strong evidence that streaming platforms contribute to the decline of video game sales, there is actually some evidence to the contrary involving twitch. A much bigger factor is the rise of free to play and particularly extremely popular games like Fortnite et al. Furthermore, I dont think video games are like movies where merely watching "spoils" the experience. People play games for the actual gameplay more than simply seeing a visual experience. Streaming revenue needs to go to the streamers, most of whom make next to nothing for providing free promotion and advertising for the games they play! If anything, game publishers should be PAYING THEM, not the other way around! And in mamy cases that it exactly what happens, precisely because streaming is how many people DISCOVER new games in the first place! Publishers demanding a cut of revenue from streamers would probably just doom video game streaming.

Rich

Doom Eternal.

Rich

They've covered the t239 architecture already, it's based on Ampere (like a downclocked 2050), so no DLSS3.5 framegen. That is, assuming the Switch actually is based on the t239 SoC...

Aliasing Anonymous

Wccftech claims 2 different PS6 SOCs in development, one of which is said to be “affordable.” Can you think of any alternative explanations besides a Series X/S approach? Could it mean that Sony too is anticipating a high end, more PC-like 10th gen Xbox?

Rich

This is the thing, it probably ISN'T dedicated hardware! RDNA3 has Matrix acceleration cores! DF got it wrong when Alex and Rich asserted that AMD has no AI acceleration in their consumer GPUs, that's not true! PSSR likely runs on Matrix cores just like DLSS runs on Tensor cores!

tempopo

Hi DF Team. I had a question for Oliver. I'm too am a huge fan of Moonlight for streaming from my PC to my SteamDeck. I've been streaming a 2x resolution image (2560x1600), often using DLSS, and then downscaling it on the device to 1280x800. It sounds weird to upscale and then downscale but this gives me a clean, artifact-free image. What's your preferred method? Should I look at DLDSR to handle this on my desktop and then stream the 800p image?

Bentou

With the PS5 PROfessional touting 4k60 as a standard. Do you think it might feature a 1080/1440p 120fps mode if Developers choose to use it?

Hey guys, With the rumors that Sony is sticking with AMD, future backwards compatibility is all but confirmed. Despite the negativity surrounding the PS5 Pro, one of the least talked about justifications for its existence is working a primer for the future PlayStation 6. It's safe to assume that future backwards compatibly would run under PS5 Pro mode, just like the PS5 did for PS4 Pro-enhanced games. If that's the case, wouldn't everyone benefit? Including those who decide to skip the PS5 Pro. I certainly appreciated the PS4 Pro patches when I got my PS5.

Wow, interesting take on the matter. I wasn't expecting that answer at all. Thanks Rich! 😊

Given the mooted specs of the Switch 2, I’m skeptical they can hit a $299 price point even on 8nm. Do you think a $399 release price is unavoidable, maybe with a haircut after the OLED release, or could Nintendo surprise us with a lower or (gulp) even higher price?

I was playing MX Unleased on my Xbox Series the other day and I was struck by how beautiful the sky rendering was in comparison to the rest of the game, and it got me thinking of games where most of the rendering is just okay, and then one or two amazingly rendered features. Do you guys have any favorite examples of games like that? Cheers!

Hello there, DF Team! AMD seemingly bowing out of the high-end GPU race actually makes them more attractive, to me at least. NVIDIA charge whatever they want for their cards anyways, so what's really going to change there? I find the lower-power prospects of AMD almost admirable, and it aligns with my own low-power consumption ethos. If the AI-powered FSR4 rumours turn out to be true, then I'm all in. I can't be the only one giving up on these super high prices and *not* chasing the 'ultimate power' dragon?

Hi DF mates! Given the recent experimentation around big and littles cores, do you think it's like that Sony will opt for a hybrid architecture for the PS6. Since, if rumours are to be believed, Sony is still opting to go with the AMD for its next generation console after its negotiation with Intel failed, AMD still does have its Zen 4C cores. We know that efficiency is KING in console land, it would make sense for Sony to chose to have at least some Zen 4/5/6 C cores. Thanks in advance

(Please credit as Local Bookstore) Will Hard Drives affect PS4 Era games at their respective max settings on PC? Is there a ray tracing bottleneck with HDDs?

Hi all, I don’t think there’s anything offensive about an Horizon Zero Dawn remaster in itself, the problem is what its existence means for future development. Games are taking so long to make and costing so much that these remasters make sense to keep things ticking over in the meantime. The problem is this will only last so long until developers run out of things to remaster (without digging deep into the back catalogue and potentially more expensive remakes. Where do developers go when the remaster well runs dry?

G'day Gents, Following up on the "consoles in 15 years" question from a couple of weeks ago, do you think we'll see any new methods of interaction in the gameplay space? The last big mainsteam methods were touch screens, motion controls and stereoscopic screens. Outside of VR the last two technologies died with the Wii/Kinect and the 3DS respectively, while touch has been only been utilised in the mobile space, with the best examples of the tech trapped on the DS and 3DS. I'd love to see even simple motion controls make some sort of comeback but i'm not holding out hope. Lets here your thoughts, cheers!

Hi DF Crew! What do you recon the power consumption on the PS5 Pro is going to be like? Considering how much energy the base PS5 consumed id imagine this to be far greater, not to mention with the new features hammering the system such as the "BIG 3!" PSSR (PISSER) and bigger GPU.

This is not your typical DF question but given the recent preview event could you talk anything MS Flight Sim 2024 related? Anything - I am desperate.

Find this interesting too. I think there was also speculation it might be a standard console plus a handheld. Fascinated to see where xbox goes next. Will they stay with the standard console hardware, make a bigger push with cloud gaming, or even allow third parties in to make a range of xbox's with varying degrees of power - perhaps having some sort of predefined 'tiers'? Well and truly in speculationsville I know but interested to see what happens with both Sony and Xbox.

Quick one Rich. Let's party is from Commando not Predator. Which, like Sully, is funny. If Matrix was here he'd laugh too.

I mean, I did address this in the very first comment.

Have any of you chaps managed to eek out some time to look at the FSR 3 implementation in Cyberpunk? I fired it up yesterday to see how it worked, I have a 3080 so no Nvidia frame gen for me and it appears that FSR 3 frame gen doesn't work. Juddery mess and I got more frames using DLSS performance mode. Odd.

RAVE_DAM0S

Hola digital foundrymen! A question about handheld gaming and scalability. in your opinion, what game today is the poster child for excellent scalability? Able to run well on handheld and scales to the highest end of console and PC. and what can that game tell us about gen 10 gaming?

Eric Benoit

I noticed Nintendo is suing PAl World for game mechanic patent and I also noticed some haters saying Astro Bot game mechanics borrow too heavily from Super Mario Sunshine. Is this a new dark chapter in the gaming industry?

Kris

Hello DF’s, For the PS5 I use a Samsung 980 pro M.2 SSD for internal storage and for PS4 games the Samsung QVO 870 external SSD. Can I still benefit the PS5 Pro performance (PSSR, PS4 game boost etc.) while using both SSD drive’s. Or everything has to be installed on the PS5 internal storage? Keep up the good work!

Thomas Trala

Hey DF team! The new Flight Simulator recommended specs were released, what are your thoughts on them? 64GB of RAM seems ridiculous to me but maybe I’m missing something!

StefanSt

If the Switch 2 leaks are real, it is what I feared would happen. No innovation from Nintendo this time it seems. Even the DS to 3DS introduced new things. What feature could „save“ Switch 2?

Tyrus1235

Good morning/afternoon/evening to all the fine folks at DF! So, apparently the PS5 firmware update was finally patched (a patch to a patch?) - have you guys tested if Final Fantasy and other games still show graphical glitches on it or if new weird bugs appeared? Thanks and all the best for you all!

Nice Marmot

This may be too late, but can we get a supporter-only video where Alex unloads his disdain for PlayStation with no holds barred? We can see it bubbling under the surface, and it would be fun to see it erupt!

Nice Marmot

How do you handle resolution switching on the PC, or do you leave desktop resolution alone and just change in game?

Communist Mister Rogers

Why did we switch from progressive scan/interlaced video to sample and hold with the transition to flat panel displays? Would it be possible to use progressive scan with modern display technology and would it have the same effect of improving image clarity as CRT's do? Cheers!
