Who would have believed it eh? Another Thursday, another prep session for another DF Direct Weekly and therefore, another Call For Questions... so let's get to it eh?

Rich and John will be joined be an as-yet decided team member to rake over the coals that compromises this week's gaming and technology news. We'll be discussing Shawn Layden's comments about the fruitless nature of the teraflops war, we'll be talking about the Intel Core Ultra reviews quote-unquote dropping today and John is intent on sharing his first impressions on Sonic x Shadow Generations!

Meanwhile, Guerrilla 're-confirms' that it's done with the Killzone franchise and chances are we've got some opinions about that!

But what have we missed in our initial scan through Video Games Chronicle for the latest gaming news? Any topics you'd like us to tackle? And of course, the stage is yours for any questions you may have about these topics and indeed anything else you'd like to put to the team. Please make full, unbridled use of the empty box below.

Did you fine gentlemen have a chance to watch Hardware Unboxed mega survey of ray tracing titles this week? Do you agree with their general conclusions?

McCloudX13

Greetings! I was wondering if any of you guys saw Daniel Owens video about the article where a developer discussed the dev cycle and why optimization is becoming increasingly rare in games. If so did you have any thoughts on the issue and do you think eventually things will change for the better? Do you think publishers are even taking a hit to sales due to poor optimization? I understand the bad press on Silent Hill 2 performance and Until Dawn but that doesn't seem to bother publishers. Do you think their sales numbers are impacted enough by a poorly received launch to actually implement change for the better or will they continue to push unfinished/poorly optimized work out the door at the cost of gamers and developers? Thanks for your time and all the hard work from the team. I honestly anticipate Alex's optimized settings videos for every major PC title I play. He and the team has shown me the value in tweaking settings instead of cranking everything to ultra.

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

I am a bit surprised Valve is reportedly holding out for a generational leap before updating the Steam Deck. Nobody is targeting the Steam Deck specifically as a platform and plenty of games are now entirely beyond its grasp. Are they making the right call? In this forever cross-gen world it seems a bit short-sighted to me - what's the point in waiting?

Rhalgr

Regarding the Killzone news, I wanted to ask if you would like to see a studio within Sony that specializes in remakes? What games from PS3 or earlier would be on your remake wish list?

RTX VUVUZELA

Greetings. John, Oliver, all: I let FOMO overtake me and pre-ordered the Analogue 3D. But I have no nostalgia for Nintendo 64 games as I never owned one. At that point I was all-in for PC gaming. Do you believe that someone like me will be able to enjoy Nintendo 64 games such as they were, low frame rates and other warts? Do they still stand on their own like 2D games from the 16 bit era consoles do, or is it mostly just nostalgia that still carries these early 3D console games?

Question: if I have a PS5 OG already but don’t have a 4K display, which would make the better upgrade, a Pro or a 4K set?

Christopher Morozin

I noticed something very interesting during the most recent Xbox Partner Showcase: Outside of three games slated for a 2024 release (Animal Well, AWII Lake House, and Phasmophobia), every single game announced for 2025 from partners had Xbox / PC listed, and later in the day, sure enough, those store pages that went live features games that support Play Anywhere. Is Microsoft finally making a push for games to support the feature even if those games don't come to Game Pass? Furthermore, is this perhaps a broader strategy by Microsoft as a direct answer to the PS5 Pro? Finally, if this is the direction Microsoft is going, do you think they'll be able to convince publishers such as EA & Ubisoft to support the feature?

AdorablyAllPhysical

Hey DF Team! If Guerrilla really is done with Killzone do you think they should turn the franchise over to another studio for resurrection? Who in Sony's stable would be best suited to take on Killzone for a new generation?

Stephen Heim

Hiya Gents. Conspiracy time. Do you think game studios purposely release games in bad states to combat and deter piracy? Back in my 'sailing the high seas' day. It was annoying to wait for someone to upload a patch to keep playing a game that needed attention and i ultimately gave up on it. It was slightly annoying back then but I feel games released in better states 10 years ago and can only imagine how fun it is now for pirates to deal with half baked games these days? Thoughts or just a wild conspiracy?

Ryan Seymour

Do you have to wait till launch day to get your grubby mitts on the PS5 Pro like the rest of us gaming scum OR (like I suspect) do you already have one and are putting it through its paces as we speak hmmmmm……..

JGizzle

Hi all. I was wondering, do you think the PS5 Pro's power would be able to boost any games in particular that have unlocked frame rates to basically always be within the VRR window? I'm talking primarily games that will not get specific pro patches. It would be great if existing fidelity modes could hit 48+ FPS, but I suppose most of those are locked to 30 (I think all games should have an "unlock FPS" mode where viable). This would be just using the raw horsepower without any PSSR support.

Having an AI-neurysm

What are your PS5 Pro #content plans? With over 70 games confirmed and counting, there’s no way for you to cover them all. Do you already have a selection in mind for which games will get top priority?

Eduardo Gutierrez

Im very excited for the Zero Dawn remaster. Are you able to talk about any more of the game before release? Is the UI the same? Deeper dive into some of the menu options, raw gameplay, or anything like that? I know you’re more tech focused so maybe not but thought it was worth the ask. Thank you so much!

wildwildwesty

If Valve build a new steam deck today targeting a similar RRP to the original, how much better will it be in performance? Negligible I’d assume. And it therefore wouldn’t have any appeal to its target audience (which I’d say is Switch 1 owners looking for an upgrade). I also think it would be product suicide to release a new handheld so close to the Xbox handheld offering and Switch 2 releases. I think they are making a good call to wait and sell what OG decks they can. I reckon we are at least 3-4 years away from a deck 2.

Kaepora

Regarding Shawn Layden's comments about the fruitlessness of the teraflops war, I really don't know what to expect from future generations of hardware (PS6, 7 and beyond). There has to be a visual limit where you can no longer see any significant difference, right? How far away are we from that point? A couple of generations maybe? Will PS7 games be indistinguishable from PS6 games? PS: Horizon is the most overrated franchise in the entire PlayStation lineup. And I got the Platinum of the first game, got its DLC and finished Forbidden West as well.

Napoleon Blownapart

Hello DF dudes! You guys have done some exciting in-depth comparisons of PSSR but I have a lingering question: we know PSSR has about a 2ms frame time cost, how does that compare to other techniques, specifically ones used most on consoles like FSR and TSR? Thanks!

Zero

Hi Gents! As much as the PC gaming community criticizes the closed ecosystems of PlayStation and Nintendo, they tend to react with hostility to anything that interferes with Steam (games on different stores, launchers, etc.). What do you make of this phenomenon? While using Steam only still has some advantages over closed console ecosystems, it does seem odd that the community has effectively decided upon a Steam-based monopoly on an otherwise "open" platform. Thanks!

Neotokyo

Hey df crew, with the ps5 pro npu being developed with pssr in mind and the io block on the regular ps5/pro , are we coming back to a time in console hardware where more custom hardware will be developed rather than just a slightly custom x86 box (ala back to the ps2/ps3 days). Do you also think that more custom hardware will allow developers to create more interesting/technologically complex settings/gameplay scenarios and allow for stuff that isnt possible on a conventional pc/other consoles? cheers

Question Generated By JensenGPT

Now that we're so close to the PS5 Pro release, and we've gotten a lot of raw footage and testing since the original announcement, including the recent technical breakdown from Remedy about Alan Wake 2's PS5 Pro modes, how well does the PS5 Pro match up with an RTX 4070 in performance? I know that comparison originally caused a lot of "controversy" so I'm wondering how well that comparison still holds up now that we've seen a lot more PS5 Pro gameplay footage.

With the news the team behind Prince of Persia the Lost Crown has moved to a new Rayman project, possibly a remake, I can't help but start wondering what it could look like. I think it needs a departure from the Rayman Origins and Legends art style as it's unfortunately very connected to the three mobile games in people's minds, the last one being from 2019. Rayman Legend's launch was very difficult back in 2013 at 40$ as Rayman Jungle Run on iPhone, created on the same engine, had been an immense success a year before and costed only 2.99$. Legends only met success with time and new ports. Should they ditch the Ubi Framework engine? Wouldn't a design more close to an Ori game fit the universe greatly? What's your take on that? Psst John, DF Retro on Rayman wen? :)

Starfox85

Hi guys, I need to know: Will Polyphony Digital also improve the PSVR2 mode of GT7 on PS5 Pro? This would be enough for me to buy the console. It seems nuts they go into details for pancake gaming modes but stay completely silent with regards to VR, which is such a game changer that I will never play a racing sim without it. Love you all, keep up the great work!

minty-hippo

Hi Rich Foundry and fellow foundrymen! Are there any plans to cover the Quest 3/3S in the near future? It would be interesting to see a comparison of the current PCVR/PSVR space to the Quest lineup of titles. Arizona Sunshine just got a remaster across platforms, which makes me curious if the Q3 version can match up to the original PSVR1 version of the game in a self-contained headset. C-Smash Quest v. PSVR 2 would also be neat from a tethered v. nontethered POV.

Brandon Dickerson

What does "game preservation" mean to you? I see this term get tossed around a lot, but I'm not sure if everyone is in agreement on the definition, goal, and execution. Is it like the Svalbard global seed vault, where a copy of every game ever made is stored in a massive vault somewhere for safekeeping and historical purposes? Ala Raider's of the Lost Ark. If a developer tells us that they have multiple backups of a game stored in many different places and formats, is that good enough to declare the game as "preserved"? I see game preservation be brought up a lot in conversations about access to games. I understand that the more people who have a copy of a game, the more likely it is to be preserved over time. However, when does someone's desire for access to a game overcome the owner's right to distribute (or not distribute) the game? Would you be satisfied with the state of game preservation if all games were perfectly preserved in vaults and museums around the world, even if you didn't have access to them?

John

Good day gentlemen. How have Sony managed to come up with a better upscaling solution out of the gate than AMD with seemingly less time and less iteration? Is there some cross pollination at play? A little collaboration to benefit both parties, maybe?

Phazonmasher

With Shawn talking about the futility of diminishing returns on AAA game development, I'm seeing that myself with many people saying they don't care about ray tracing and some of the most popular mods are dedicated to removing post processing effects. Obviously the Internet doesn't reflect all of reality, but it does seem there are a number of people who just don't care. Should developers really chase technology that a large number of players just don't care about when all it does is increase the budget for a minimal return? Thanks for all the content. Cheers!

Takeshino

Now that image quality is less... straightforward, could developers use a sort of overscan if they use screenspace effects, for example? Just zoom in, at the end of the postFX pass, 5% to %10, and those artifacts should be hidden. And if you have the perf. overhead, you could even increase the render resolution accordingly. GTAVI, for example, has this interesting RTGI solution which seems to load some objects into the BVH only if they are onscreen. You can see it in the shot with Lucia looking back in jail, at the very right. You'd have to have a "safe zone" overlay when setting the camera up but a 10% zoom would definitely hide the RTGI being filled in. Astro Bot's contact shadows would also benefit from that.

andre surles

Young Men! Frame generation… what is keeping the Professional from being able to generate frames? Should we assume all next generation hardware will have it and will that finally kill off 30FPS?

filreed

Hi DF Team! Loving the content and looking forward to more videos on the acronym wars (Pisser vs DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS). Wanted to get your opinion following on from your conversation last week about the new Xbox with its 6nm chip and its other pushes to reduce power consumption. While these are great initiatives, do you believe they should tackle the bigger issue that all of their Series X consoles (and maybe even Series S) will eventually end up as giant paper weights. If the internal hard drive fails or is removed, I understand that because of some security key, it will render the rest of the console as useless and produce a lot of e-waste. Microsoft might be able to do something about this now, but what about in 10-20 years time when they stop supporting the console. They won the gamescom Green Studio of the Year in 2023, which is probably a bit of a joke for multiple reasons, but outside of potentially wanting to recreate the opening scenes of Wall-E with a load of Xbox consoles and probably security concerns (I don't think PlayStation and/or Nintendo have this issue), why do you think they are doing this and is there anyway they could remove this restriction in the future? Thanks!

Lord of Cinder

Hey, I have a question that bugs me for quite some time and it seems like I am the only one. Why is nobody talking about the coil whine problem that plagues the PS5? Is it because people don't hear it? Is it because many players are used to worse coil whine from other devices like PCs? And most importantly - do we expect that Sony is doing better with the PS5 Pro? I tried quite a few PS5s and I always had to return them, because of the coil whine. When I play in the evening and my children are sleeping I can't be very loud, that's why I turn the TV volume a bit down and the coil whine was very distracting for me and my wife, who is sitting next to me on the couch. I actually bought an Xbox Series X, which is a dream in that regard - but I miss the Sony first party games. That's why I preordered a PS5 Pro and hope for the best. Thanks for all the great work you guys are doing!

Inspector Max

Hi DF. In regards of Shawn's comments: In your opinion, will we ever again witness console manufacturers, other than Nintendo, bring "them big bespoke bucks" to games where the risk and innovation is anywhere else than at the surface level (graphics, story, cutscene production, etc)? Or are the good old "days of play" truly over?

1040STF

Playtonic just released a Yooka-Replaylee reveal trailer with a mysterious "Nintendo" logo as one of the release console at the end of it and Internet is exploding thanks to that. But something else caught my attention: the gameplay shown was plagued by countless stutters. It blows my mind that they can release it that way. I'm worried: has Alex watched it? Is he ok?

Perfect_Organism

If Alex happens to be on the panel: A hypothetical for Alex - you’re trapped on a deserted island that happens to have high speed internet and a PS5. To play games, you can either use the PS5 or use GeForce Now. Which one are you picking? Some caveats, you don’t have access to your PC library on GeForce now because unfortunately you hit your head as you were washed ashore and can’t remember your passwords, and this island falls in a specific territory that means you have the same range of games to choose from on both platforms (i.e RTS games on PS5, and all of Sony exclusives on PC). You will never escape this island so there is no incentive to buy games on PC to play later on your own hardware (v sorry about all this, it sounds very traumatic).

José Francisco Rosado

Hello Digital Gentlemen. I hope you're having a great year so far. Now that you've been trying and testing PSSR and analyzing the PS5 PRO's advantages over the PS5 noob, what do you thing about getting the new model? Can you say it is a worthy investment of our money? Cheers.

VeryProfessionalDodo

No question from me, just sending thoughts and prayers for when PS5 Pro comes out and a flood of requests arrive to test every single PS5 Pro enhanced game, including every base PS5 game with performance problems. Good luck, gents 🫡

VeryProfessionalDodo

Don’t worry, we hear it too :( it’s a curse to hear coil whine and see stutter, how I wish to have been blessed with a “it’s quiet for me”, or a “runs great on my machine”

VeryProfessionalDodo

According to Mark Cerny, there will be PSVR2 improvements coming later with PS5 Pro

VeryProfessionalDodo

I think PS5 proved that custom tech when leveraged correctly can produce mind bending results. This time around they essentially solved the I/O problem, but the era of custom engines that fully leverage that is slowly decreasing. For the previous generations, the amount of custom engines was insane, and they really tried to squeeze everything they could. This time around, with so many studios using Unreal or other off the shelf engines, it’s up to Epic to leverage the custom tech for them Also, the Dualsense haptics can be somewhat of a game changer when implemented correctly

Lord of Cinder

Thanks mate. It’s ridiculous for me to hear people saying it’s a super quiet console that doesn’t make a sound… when every PS5 that got inspected by my ear (🤓) was faulty.

Starfox85

I know, but that comment was extremely vague and mentioned PSSR being optimized for PSVR2 later. Not a single word about a patch for one of the first-party VR games.

VeryProfessionalDodo

This is such a good question, and a really thought provoking one. I think that if you build a closed garden, but with enough open space for people to leave, people will just want to stay in their preferred space. However, the hostility towards other stores and the worship of Steam is antithetical to criticising consoles for their walled off gardens. I think people are so protective of Steam and Valve due to a mixture of love for their IPs, and overall pro-consumer attitude. Steam is the de facto PC platform, because historically Steam can be seen as the saviour of PC gaming in general. They broke down the piracy barrier by building a better system, but there was fierce opposition to it in the beginning. There was even a piracy group called “nosteam”, can’t get much clearer than that. Still, people forget that Steam still takes a big cut of every sale, is somewhat involved with gambling with their closed off market, and only started the best refund policy due to pushback from Australian regulation. Would love to see this discussed in DF, it’s a truly fascinating topic of how people can simultaneously oppose big corporations, while giving all their money to one single entity without noticing the cognitive dissonance.

VeryProfessionalDodo

If a game has dynamic res with high upper bounds that aren’t normally reached or unlocked frame rates with performance issues, it will be better on PS5 Pro. Anything other than that I’m highly confident it will not show up. Historically, the transition between base and pro consoles has been “if a developer doesn’t implement it, it’s going to be the same”. However, this gen there has been a LOT of dynamic resolution being used, so I think it bodes better for the PS5 Pro than the PS4 Pro, for example. At that time, all PS4 games were pretty much just 1080p30 hard locked

VeryProfessionalDodo

I think Denuvo is your counter argument. Games with DRM have had so many performance issues throughout the years, that piracy is often the best gaming experience. If a publisher really wanted to provide the best experience for the customers, they wouldn’t include Denuvo, so the fact they do only goes to show that the only explanation for poor release states is just money, and hitting quarterly deadlines. But that’s just my opinion, of course :)

Leftisthominid

A few weeks ago, you responded to one of my questions where I stated that I have FSR more than Rich hates the Master System. Your reactions to my statement gave of a sense of “that is not possible”. I was wondering if you could recount the origin story of Rich’s bespoke hatred of the Master System and why it persists into the here and now.

Auro

Lets talk CRTs! When we compare System Latency between a setup with a VRR capable monitor and a CRT that is not VRR capable (the vast majority), should we be including the lag from VSync? It's possible to play tear free without VSync with tools like Latent Sync but in most cases I feel like CRTs are commonly used with VSync while VRR monitors are not (having VSync enabled in NVCP doesn't mean VSync is engaged if VRR is engaged). I feel like an OLED VRR setup can have lower system latency due to VSync being disengaged, but the motion clarity a CRT offers can still make the CRT "feel" more responsive in scenarios where the game is locked at 60 fps.

Leftisthominid

This is just a nagging curiosity, has anyone you know in real life referred to the base PlayStation 4 or base PlayStation as the PS4 Amateur or PS5 Amateur in spoken conversation with you?

VeryProfessionalDodo

Depends on whether you’re running a 1440p or 1080p screen, I would say. If 1080p, a 4K set would be better, because otherwise you’re just going to get better downscaling to 1080p with the PS5 Pro. If you have a 1440p screen, I honestly don’t know! Since a lot of games target a resolution around 1440p for the PS5, I think a Pro might be a better deal. But if it’s upgrading from a 1440p LCD to a 4K OLED, I would go with the TV upgrade first, and then see if I really want the PS5 Pro later!

Simplex

Are you going to talk about Batman: Arkham Shadow, a full fat entry in the Arkham series, or at least ask Ian Highton to talk about the game?

Simplex

I was calling it PS4 Noob ever since the Pro came out.

Jonathan Hamilton

I myself am very curious about how the myriad visual modes in Ghostwire: Tokyo may or may not be affected

domstole

Hey DF with UE5 maturing and more developers utilizing the engine, we continue to see the same stutters and performance overhead which affects even the beefiest of hardware. Moving forward would a refinement of the engine or more time in the oven when it comes to game optimization be better?

Zero

Some really great insights here. Thanks for in-depth reply!

sj33 (Jake)

Intel have somehow saved AMD's butts! AMD disappointed everyone with their Zen 5 CPUs and had us seriously questioning their decisions, but Intel manage to outdo them by releasing CPUs with even more disappointing gaming performance - right before AMD slightly recover with their new X3D range - likely to be the new gaming king simply by virtue of the Intel competition being poor. Intel will point to the power savings, but it's a difficult sell when people will rightly expect at least some gaming performance uplift. How did they both end up in this spot?

Bulbous_Bow

Oh hi there! Aren’t simultaneous calls for Microsoft to go with a non-subsidised / open platform next-gen console also inherently calls for more expensive hardware? Particularly bearing in mind Nvidia’s profit margins; when you imagine a non-subsidised Nvidia GPU vs a subsidised AMD one in the PlayStation… I can imagine the same raster performance on the former costing hundreds of pounds extra

zephyr

What do you think about Xbox's marketing head saying "nobody cares about Banjo-Kazooie"? While he later clarified that he was being sarcastic that doesn't change the fact that there hasn't been a new game in series in 16 years! Are we likely to ever see another entry in this series or is it just a relict of a bygone era?

KaiserAullirio

Will we see more PS5 Pro announcements out of Sony before the launch? Maybe boost mode details? My Profesional Peepers need pixel filled patches to peep.

Alan

Hi Team, In the dark, where the shadows crawl, Virtual nightmares, hear the monsters call. Jump scares hit, and your heart won’t slow, You’re lost in the game, but you can’t let go! What game has scared you the most? Alien Isolation for me, exited a vent okay, died a bit later, re-loaded exited the vent and the Alien was waiting for me and jumped me! Happy Halloween everyone!

[PLACEHOLDER]

Comrades, loving the comparison videos pitting PiSSeR against the other upscaling methods. While my eye may not catch much of a difference in action other than one (looking at you FSR), it's still cool to see the strengths and weaknesses of each. Back to PiSSeR, should we expect to see the same level of leaps between versions 1.0 and 2.0 like we've seen with the others? Or will it be more incremental due to how strong it is in its nascence?

ZeroSum

Random minor question : any reason why comparisons have New (Remaster) on the left, and Old (Original) on the right? Rather than the inverse? Just a curiosity!

Treefinngers

Hello all! PSSR is shaping up to be perfectly cromulent! And IMO, PSSR's 1st iteration is far better than FSR's 3rd! I'm curious what you guys would do if you were driving the Xbox struggle bus? Besides FSR, Auto SR is all MS seems to have and that isn't even an upscaler. So I don't see it as relevant outside their laptops given its limitations and fundamental differences. Should MS/XB just give AMD a Scrooge McDuck pool of cash to improve FSR? What could XB do to be competitive & compelling going forward? To have another generation like XB360? I know it's unrealistic but I'd tell Phil Spencer to trade in his ugly AMD Xmas sweater for a fancy new NVIDIA leather jacket! Thanks as always for my favorite weekly show!

Jonathan Hamilton

Given what you know about the hardware requirements for PSSR, would it be feasible to include PSSR in a handheld successor to the Vita?

Snorlax cat

is spectral in PSSR just a marketing term? what is the cerny sauce naming about?

Rich

Look at the Steam Hardware Survey. People definitely care about high end GPU features, and put their money towards it. The evidence is stark.

Rich

There's no way any NPU is beating an RTX GPU tensor cores for AI performance. Look up the teraflops.

Rich

I agree with the thrust of the question, but it should be pointed out that Steam isn't anywhere near as closed as any console platform. Steam allows mods, custom configurations, etc. that closed platforms do not.

Cold Pancake

Hey gents! Dragon Age Veilguard is shaping up to look very interesting from a gameplay and a technical standpoint. However, I am concerned with the lukewarm reception thus far that sales numbers might not be that impressive. Do you think EA will accept another Bioware game that doesn't live up to expectations? Curious to hear your thoughts.

DyeHardX86

The Veilguard has jumped 39 spots to #12 in Rev Charts on Steam this week and is #3 on Preorder Steam Charts also seems to be doing quite well on Xbox and PS5 Charts too so we'll see what Meta & Open critic scores look like (love or hate they're important to initial momentum)

Zero

Absolutely agree with that! I had to gloss over those points a bit to keep the question concise, but the "spirit" of the ask was about the tension (for lack of a better word) between the risk of monopolization in the PC gaming space and the reality that split platforms carry a lot of disadvantages and annoyances. Thanks for the reply!

DyeHardX86

Good afternoon(assuming) , I was wondering if you think Stalker 2 will be a well rounded UE5 port on PC after watching several Developer interviews recently and noting that GSC is using a heavily modified UE5.1 in lieu of moving to the much more mature 5.3 any concerns? And Thank you for your time and consideration

DyeHardX86

Such a good game didn't get enough accolades imo

The Knight Who Says Ni!

Gentlemen, in your opinion, when would you consider the golden age of gaming? Was it during the rise of arcade classics in the '80s, the 16-bit console wars of the early '90s, the transition to 3D gaming in the late '90s, or perhaps during the advent of online multiplayer in the early 2000s? I'd love to hear your thoughts on which era truly represents gaming's golden age and why.

Iuri Grangeiro

Have you guys ever considered making a video on youtube compression and the zooms you use? I feel like this has been mentioned on the direct over and over again, but that most commenters don’t really watch the direct regularly, and, perhaps most importantly, have no intuitive grasp on how important youtube compression is to analizing visuals. A video illustrating to what extent youtube compression affects detail (funnily enough, with slowdowns and zooms) could be very instructive to everyone. Cheers!

Someguyperson

While everyone is making unsubstantiated rumors regarding the 50 series of GPUs, I'll throw my hat into the ring. I think the 50 series of GPUs will have a decompression block built right into the memory controllers. That way, the card can use direct storage to pull data straight into GPU memory and unzip it on the fly, increasing effective bandwidth and effective memory capacity. I can also see that feature bring incredibly useful for AI workloads where you need as much memory capacity as possible. What new feature do you guys think the 50 series of GPUs will have?

Someguyperson

Will you guys cover the Monster Hunter Wilds Beta on October 31st - November 3rd? I have a feeling it will be as important and impactful as the Elden Ring network test. It also has cross play on PC, PS5, and Xbox, so 4 of you could play on all the consoles at once and play together for a cool console comparison video.

Someguyperson

What do you guys think about Masahiro Sakurai's YouTube channel finally ending? Do you guys think you could script & record 256 videos in 4 months like Sakurai did?

goregutz

Hello, colossals of the digital! Have you guys seen the ryzen z2 series leak? Seems very confusing to me why they would have 3 architectures under one series. Also, given that the z2 extreme is going to have a combination of z5 and z5c cores for efficiency, do you think there's a chance the PSnext will also go down the same route? Cheers!

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hi DF crew! What if the next Xbox console was a hybrid where both in X and S tier you get the same handheld that plays Game Pass games but in the dock you have either a weaker (in S tier) or stronger (X) GPU with an ML component that would allow you to play the latest games on a 4K screen? That’s what I’d call the biggest technological leap in gaming! Cheers!

Diego ElRey

Hello DF, question for John. Top 5 Sonic music tracks from official games?

Mr Bespoke

Hello DF! Has John played any modern game consoles on those CRT's via the RetroTink 4K? Especially the remastered retro games that have appeared lately.

tod weitzel

So, Qualcomm is potentially losing their ARM license in two months, and there were recently rumors Qualcomm was preparing a bid for what's left of Intel. What do you anticipate out of these Interesting Times should this come to pass?

Hordita Y Churro

Hello DF! Hope you are well. Question for John: Are you still using the Quest 3? What apps/games have you been trying? I am playing Batman: Arkham Shadows and it is great!

VeryProfessionalDodo

I still remember being really put off in Forbidden West hearing the coil whine difference whenever Aloy was on screen or not

VeryProfessionalDodo

“Vague” really was the name of the game for the PS5 Pro reveal :(

sero

Guten Abend DF chaps! Would you say that the gaming industry becoming more risk-averse on both the creative and technical front? The PS4 era introduced titles like God of War, Horizon, and Spider-Man, but their sequels, while polished, seem to play it safer and feel less impactful. Are we seeing a broader shift away from innovation this gen, or is it too early to tell?

(Don’t be a) Richard

Looking at the latest Playtonics announcement concerning a Yooka-Laylee remaster, they mention they’ll tell us what Nintendo console will be supported “as soon as possible”. Seems like they’re cheekily hinting at an imminent Switch 2 announcement. Maybe they’re just leading us on and playing on what we already know, or could this be a sign from a developer of an imminent announcement? This was around the time we started getting Switch news back in 2016, from memory. Hi DF pundits! Many reviewers are claiming that the Intel core ultra 200S series is like AMD's zen 1 moment and things will improve over time with patches and optimisations. Do you agree with this assessment? Also, does Alex plan to upgrade his CPU to the 9800x3d? When it releases?

Hey, I think I got a virus, and I'm going to do a system wipe, so I was thinking about upgrading from my 11700 (Non-K) to an 11700K, do you think this would be worth the upgrade for 4K 30fps with a 4080? This is the end of the upgrade path for my rig, so I'm wondering for longevity's sake. Love, from Minneapolis

Hello DF folks! I increasing feel like many new games are struggling too much to achieve decent levels of technical performance and stability, despite the fact that CPU/GPU/memory hardware continues to become more and more powerful. Is this an issue of real world hardware performance not matching up to specs on paper? Diminishing returns for silicon improvements? Or does the fault lie with the software of game engines like UE5? Are engines too focused on adding new visual features at the expense of core performance?

Hey DF crew, with another success of Nixxes remastering HZD, do you think we would ever see an original new game developed by them? Or perhaps a remake of old bangers like Jak Trilogy or even Ape Escape? Cheers!

digitalfoundry

Likely talking about the frequency spectrum in terms of detail.

I'm sure we've covered this in the Direct before. I will need to look it up

Is the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster using the new bespoke upscaling coming to HFW that Oliver got to discuss with Guerrilla? Would the game benefit from it & does it seem feasible to backport it?

Thomas Martinez

Guerilla may be done with Killzone but what about another dev picking up the IP for Sony? Same question for the Resistance franchise. Either some form of remake, reboot or follow up from another dev would surely pick up some attention from fans.

Ahoy-hoy, gents! Just wondering if John has had the chance to try Arkham Shadow. If so, as a fan of the series, I’d be curious to hear his thoughts before getting it myself. (P.S. The prescription lenses mentioned in an earlier Direct were a massive QoL upgrade. I wish I had purchased some sooner!) Cheers!

Hey DF, A modder on YouTube has managed to make a PS4 handheld out of a PS4 slim! I figured this would happen sooner or later with all the console mods on YouTube. My question to you is, what would Sony be able to improve in a PS4 portable made by them? I'm assuming they could rearrange and make a smaller motherboard? Use more modern and efficient components? Interested to hear your thoughts and shoutout to Restore Technique for their incredible build!

Hello DF Team, this is maybe specifically a John question but the announcement for the release date of metal slug tactics had me interested in playing more metal slug. I noticed there is a metal slug anthology on PS4, but it seems to be a port of a port. From Neo Geo to PS2 to PS4. I will be playing it on my PS5. Do you know if the title holds up through those ports and if the emulation is going to add in perceptible lag? I’m also curious what everyone’s thoughts are on the new Metal Slug Tactics releasing in November, I think it looks beautiful.

Hello DF team! I'm very excited about the PS5 Pro coming out and have enjoyed/learned a lot from your videos. I was wondering what display(s) you're using during your reviews or comparison videos? I'm currently using the Sony InZone M9 with my PS5 (since it has exclusive features for it) and was wondering if this display would be still be good enough for the PS5 Pro or if I should upgrade to something else? Thank you for your time and keep up the incredible work that you do.

Hello DF! I was wondering about PSSR and how it will mature into the future. Do you gents think that they will advertise versioning and add features similar to DLSS 1, 2, 3.1 etc or have they just dropped a PlayStation upscaling solution and that’s it for the remainder of generation?

Douglas Fowler

I’m curious about this too! Would be cool if we see games using PSSR able to further optimize over time.
