Hello there everyone! Many thanks for bearing with me here as this update is somewhat late. The PlayStation 5 Pro embargo for the unboxing 'dropped' on Monday, requiring a re-edit owing to some to-ing and fro-ing with Sony about what we could actually show. That put me back several hours, meaning it was a rush to complete the assets needed for the PlayStation 5 Pro review, which we filmed this morning.

Here's the deal. I usually handle hardware reviews, but it soon became apparent that I would never hit the next embargo. Meanwhile, we really wanted to get as MUCH detail out there as possible. The solution is to go parallel - myself, John and Oliver have all supplied data and impressions for the review, which Oliver is editing now. It's a little more formal than a DF Direct, but the point is that when the next embargo lifts, you'll have a detail-heavy PS5 Pro review that should be over an hour long.

Game analysis, RT testing, PSSR breakdowns on more games, Game Boost, PS4 Image Enhancement, power consumption metrics, CPU performance testing. It's all in there. I'm looking forward to seeing the final edit!

Let's talk about other things happening:

Will is our man for reviewing the the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, so the Eurogamer text review will drop for that on embargo. After that, the Black Friday affiliates rush begins!

Rich (ie me) circles back to the 9800X3D video review as soon as I've cleared the Eurogamer PS5 Pro text review. This should be relatively straightforward! I'm also keen on more in-depth Game Boost testing and I guess everyone kinda wants to know what the closest equivalent PC GPU actually is....

Tom is working on sponsored content right now but once that's over, it's straight onto PS5 Pro game testing.

Alex is polishing up his Red Dead Redemption PC review, which is looking like a lot of fun. He's ordered a PS5 Pro to help with our efforts there, but he may well be taking a look at Lego Horizon... we'll have to wait and see!

Oliver has basically been saving our bacon time and time again. I'm so excited about the PS5 Pro review. He's also going to be covering Alan Wake 2 on Pro, but before that, a deeper dive into the PS4 image enhancement feature on PS5 Pro.

John is going to be looking at Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5 Pro.

OK, so lots going on there. I will be reviewing your PS5 Pro requests in the other posts in due course, but as ever, if you have requests for #content, do let me know in that always inviting box below.

Thank you for your hard work Gentlemen!!!

Thank you all for the hard work and great content! It is much appreciated!

I just desperately want comparisons of Demon's Souls on Pro. Demon's is my life.

Very excited to get my ‘Pro. Loved Rich and Johns double-act unboxing. Thank you all for all the midnight oil you’re burning, what with SONY’s new hardware and general end of year craziness!

Question Generated By JensenGPT

I think having you 3 do the review together is just a better format anyways. This was the right approach.

BigFoot

Tomorrow (november 6th), I'm not sure exactly when though.

trayracer

Can't wait to see the triple threat review of the Pro. Thanks to all of you for your hard work!

I’ve been playing a lot on my PS5 Pro and I’m really excited about the DF Content. Manage to feel a bunch of improvements on legacy stuff that has the ability to unlock frame rates like DMC5, Control, FF16, Ghostwire, but I’m saving the final analysis to the PROS (not the PS5 Pro but the DF Pros!).

Wotans Cry

To Xbox DefenseForce - where is your God now?!

I wonder if any of the updates games for PS5 Pro also features the latest FSR 3.1, that would allow a much better comparison of the two. For one thing I just got the HZD remaster on PC and the difference in FSR quality is very significant.

Rich, you've done a remarkable job cultivating this team. Everyone is devastatingly competent, uniquely personable, and seemingly capable of getting on well with each other, even when occassionally disagreeing on the podcast. I especially enjoyed the conversation around Oliver's Wayfinder segment for last week's podcast. You and John pushed Oliver go a little further and explain his interest in the game, taking the segement from good to great.

OculusVigil89

I was planning on revisiting Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro. I know there is no update if that game would ever receive PS5 Pro enhanced version but maybe consider testing out with game boost feature.

I’ve been waiting for this kind of coverage for PS5 pro. Sony is doing such a bad job of advertising their console. This is the type of material I need to see so I can figure out if I wanna buy this.

Might be worth doing a big video breaking down which PS5 Pro games got a res update, which got a 60 fps update, and which got a a settings boost. Or something of the sort!

Bulbous_Bow

For games with enhanced ray tracing it would be interesting to know which AMD or even Nvidia GPUs the settings mark the console out as being similar to. I imagine it will vary by game, and particularly as developers start actually developing games with the Pro in mind. But in the meantime it would be interesting to know what GPU would be required e.g. to match the enhanced Spider Man or Ratchet & Clank settings at an equivalent frame rate? I’m guessing a 3070

Bulbous_Bow

…although the Pro should comfortably out perform it when VRAM becomes an issue

BespokeEP

Can I just say how amazing of an addition Oliver has been (exclamation point) He fit in with the friends and colleagues team so quickly that it felt like he had been doing this with you bespoke gents since the beginning. In fact SHOUT out to the whole Digital Friends & Foundry team. Thank you for doing all the heavy lifting so we can always game in the best way possible!

James Prendergast

Regarding the Pro-equivalent GPU, the problem will always be the software. It's not possible to get the same support on PC (both driver and game settings/behaviour) so it'll likely be an Nvidia card. We already know what the equivalent is from an FP32 and RT point of view - Sony have literally told us. 1.45x the perf, 2-3x the RT, so the RX 7700 XT...

tom leier

#content I would love to see if John or Oliver could check VR content like re village or re4, gt7 are getting improvements to vr image quality with those games being enchanced for pro

Peter

Brilliant, really looking forward to the coverage. Though it's not a day 1 for me personally, new HW is always exciting

Peter

Seconded

Valon Fazlija

So when is this supposed to drop ?

VeryProfessionalDodo

I think one thing should be upgraded, and that’s resolution. The game employed dynamic res, so it should be a sharper image overall, by virtue of hitting those higher bounds more often

VeryProfessionalDodo

Interesting, at this point I thought it would be a launch day thing. From the looks of it not sure DF will have a review ready for prime time when embargo lifts, but they’re the only ones I’m going to be paying attention on this

Norman Vadeboncoeur

Having an issue with the video? I saw it post a couple of minutes ago, but then it was gone before I had a chance to click on it.

BigFoot

Yeah I can't view it either

Bulbous_Bow

I see your point, although the comparison would still be interesting in the meantime. For example, if PSSR and enhanced ray tracing capabilities elevate the Pro such that it provides a similar experience in select titles to, say, a 7900XT, that’s an interesting statement in itself regarding the Pro’s value proposition. Or to put it another way, to what extent does the Pro’s enhanced feature set allow it to catch up to otherwise far more powerful RDNA GPUs?

Scott

Thirded?! Oliver has been great!

MittenFacedLass

Will there be a downloadable version of the review?

Willy

Are you planning to look at PSVR2 improvements with the pro?
