Hi everyone, first up, many apologies for the lateness of this particular post! Truth is, we're a bit tired after the Switch 2 effort yesterday, the South of Midnight review embargo lifts shortly as does the embargo for the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2. South of Midnight will go public tomorrow with early access today, while you should expect to see the TLOUp2 review soon. In terms of the Switch 2 special downloads, they'll be along in a bit!

But for now it's all about DF Direct Weekly #208. This will likely be a smaller show, carrying on with the Switch 2 coverage primarily. We ran out of time to include Q+A in that one, so all the questions from yesterday's post will be considered for Direct #208.

That said, please do feel to suggest topics for debate and of course, pose your questions!

How come nobody has brought up dlss on the switch 2 everyone keeps saying it’s running dlss 4.0

Jonny_5a

What are your top pics from the announced switch 2 games for comparison? Really looking forward to seeing how it stacks up and what the new ‘impossible ports’ will be

Spodlude

Do you think switch 2 game prices will come down after the outrage or will Nintendo stick with this strategy? Everything looks smart in terms of the console choices apart from the outrageous game prices.

RTX VUVUZELA

Greetings, do you think this SoC would make for a good NVIDIA Shield 2? The apparent lack of HDMI 2.1 on the Switch 2 seems like it would be a drawback for a 4K media player. Thanks for your coverage!

Peter Karadimas

Hello gents! What do you think are the reasons the initial batch of Switch 2 games avoided using DLSS? Is the performance overhead and power draw too heavy for a handheld device?

Kitty Raven

Would the team care to expand on John’s comment in the Switch 2 DF Direct Special that Switch 2 is vital to the future success of the console space in general? Thank you for the great journalism and analysis.

Taggen86

Now that both nintendo and nvidia have confirmed dlss on switch 2, why did we not see any game with it on the direct? When do you expect us to see the first game with it?

Perfect_Organism

My question is a benign one. In the Switch 2 direct, Oliver described it as being “pregnant with content”. The moment I heard that phrase I stopped in my tracks. It’s both the most disgusting and beautiful sentence I’ve ever heard. It’s Shakespearean in terms of the imagery it conjures, and poetry like that has to be appreciated for what it is, especially when there’s such a bereft of it in tech circles. So, with all that being said, I’d like to know when we can expect a t-shirt with that phrase embroidered on? Thanks.

What flavour of DLSS could the Switch part Deux be running?CCN or give the lack of chat about it at the presentation Transformer as it is a robot in disguise…? Ta muchly

Jonathan Thomassen

There seems to be confirmation that DLSS and ray tracing are indeed possible on NS2. Why do you think neither was shown off in this direct? Do you think it is simply a case of the API not being ready for developers to use? Or do you think something else is going on, like Nintendo wanting to save on power usage in handheld mode? Best regards

Taggen86

Any thoughts on the new nvidia driver bug on the 50 series resulting in the flip metering capping the frame rate/frame times way too low, making frame gen unuseable in recent games? Just pausing the game in for example star wars will reduce the frame rate by a huge margin.

quickgiant

Hi DF! Per Nvidia's press release, it appears that the Switch 2's tensor cores are used for microphone and camera features as well as for upscaling. Wouldn't these features compete for hardware resources if used at the same time? Maybe the extra power in docked mode is enough to make up for it, but curious what you all think. From Rich's T239 preview video, it seemed like upscaling would be rather expensive.

b00l3an

After the nvidia driver issue video earlier today, I would like an in-depth investigation into the problem. It's getting on to a long term issue with no resolution in sight.

Having an AI-neurysm

Hey gents. Scores of press got hands on access to Switch 2 today, do any of them indicate whether the HDR screen actually has backlight control? Or are we looking at not-really-HDR tone mapping similar to what low-end TVs do?

inebriatedPorcupine

Hey DF (and especially John): Metroid 4 is finally coming and as a fan of the Wii pointer control of Metroid Prime Trilogy I'm pretty bummed that the 4th prime won't have them. Even if we do get some form of mouse-support - I actually prefer the Wii mote over a mouse for FPSs. It is harder to be as precise as with a mouse, but the difficulty is actually immersive (unlike a gamepad where the difficulty is immersion breaking). Did you enjoy the playing the Wii Prime games? What do you feel about Wii based FPSs in general in retrospective?

Alex’sRayTracedBottom

The news that Naughty Dog's Intergalactic may not be released until 2027-2028 is incredibly disheartening. I now fear it could end up being a cross-gen title for both PS5 and PS6, which could mean another seven years without a true PS6-exclusive game from Naughty Dog. Should Sony re-evaluate its relationships with first-party studios, bringing them closer to the hardware team’s goals, and more effectively align release schedules? Imagine an entire Nintendo generation without a Zelda game. Nintendo just wouldn’t allow that to happen. Sports analogy — If I were the head of PlayStation, I’d be investigating why my star player didn’t play a single game this season.

Scott Hanson

What is your thoughts on no 2D or 3D Mario Game on the Switch 2 at launch. Do you think the launch was delayed so Mario Kart World and Metro Prime 4 would be the first party launch titles. Feels like the hardware was done long before the games.

scud

Hey guys, not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm curious as to what proprietary engines you find the most impressive, either technically or purely visually? I'm obsessed with weather and atmospherics in games, and I've been incredibly impressed by AC Shadows' Anvil engine, which has the best open world weather I think I've ever seen. Outside of open worlds, I was blown away by Plague Tale: Requiem, which uses an in-house engine called Zouna, I think. I'm surprised it didn't get as much publicity as I would have expected for such an incredible in-house engine at the time of release. Anyway, I'm curious what floats your particular boats? Cheers chaps.

Dlss and rt is no show on switch 2

Tyrus1235

Hello DF gents! In your past experiences, what do you believe are the biggest causes for improper frame pacing in frame-capped games? Is there a "villain" in this type of situation? Thanks for the great content, lads!

Yinj

Hello DF! From what I gathered, Switch 2 supports 1440p output resolution and games can run at that target resolution in 60 fps. What happens when you only have a 1080p screen? Do we get more fps? If yes then can we have that for Sony PS? I play on a 1440p screen and I'm baffled why my PS has a 4k upscaling target when I'm only outputting to a 1440p screen. Or am I completely wrong? Thanks

Do magnets lose their magnetism over time? Are we going to end up with floppy joy cons again?

How do you feel the Switch 2 compares to the current crop of PC handhelds? Is it a SteamDeck killer?

Caboose967

Aloha DF. With the announcement for pricing of Switch games and the ever looming GTA 6 price of $100. What are your thoughts about talking about price of a game in a review? I always say there is no such thing as a bad game but a bad price.

Eric Benoit

Hey John,or anyone else on the DF Crew, do you see yourself connecting the Switch 2 with the Retrotink 4k? It seems like alot of possibilities with the Retrotink 4k

Question Generated By JensenGPT

What are your thoughts on the PC version of Spider-Man 2 as it sits now? Is it good enough, or does it still need work?

Diecou

Hi DF! Given that on the footage shown so far there were no signs of DLSS: How do you think that speaks of the raw power of the Switch 2 compared to your previous expectations? To my layman's point of view it seems like a bigger upgrade than I anticipated. However, no showing of DLSS worries me that this might not be a feature of the Switch 2. Can you think of another reason for Nintendo not showing its games in the best possible light if DLSS was indeed a feature?

Auro

Hey Guys! Exciting week of Switch 2 news. How do you think the switch 2 is achieving 4K Output, keeping up with DF analysis I believe it was stated that DLSS will not be able to output 4K on the Switch 2 and we haven't seen evidence of DLSS being used yet. For titles that use DLSS do you expect they'll use a hybrid between DLSS and Bilinear upscaling? I'd like to say I'm very happy about the inclusion of HDR, I feel like the art style in many first party Nintendo titles will benefit! Additionally I have another question related to dock mode, nintendo does not state whether we will have VRR support in docked mode, could this be an HDMI 2.0 limitation?

TMoney58

Any guesses or predictions on the effect of the global trade war on the video game industry?

Pomps

Hey guys! Just watched the treehouse and Metroid prime 4's cutscenes look unreal. I remember seeing some reflections and wondering if they were using SSR or ray tracing (probably not). What did you guys make of the cutscenes in particular? Is it just the resolution increase doing heavy lifting or are there other features we missed?

Peter

Good day DF Chaps, hope all is well! Switch 2, we've seen it and I'm a bit more impressed than I expected to be. I'm curious about what the circa 10w handheld mode will mean for third party support? I know we have had a few announced for launch but do you think the specs (assumed specs I should say) will allow for broader third party support? Dare I say, all of the core releases we see on other consoles?

Peter

Good day DF Chaps, hope all is well! When it comes to the Switch 2 and DLSS, do we know what version it will use? We know DLSS has it's own cost, and given the supposed specs of the Switch 2, are we perhaps going to see a paired back or limited version of the upscaler?

StrugglingShader

Hey guys, I know higher resolution panels benefit retro games, due to being able to use more accurate CRT shaders in PC emulators and devices like the upcoming Analogue 3D and the Retrotink 4K are designed to take advantage of that. But my question is about retail games: do the high end 4K consoles version of retro rereleases (generally emulated collections) and newer pixel art games that use CRT filters take advantage of the extra pixels to make the games look better than switch or early last gen consoles? And if not, should we expect that to improve with the release of the Switch 2?

Full House's John SteamOS

D'you lads reckon Nintendo might still release a "Switch 1 Micro"? For example: - mobile phone sized - move to 14nm or smaller, and use passive cooling (ie no fan) - fixed joycons, ala Switch Lite - Sub €$£100 There's probably manufacturing capacity at sizes above 10nm, right? Switch 1 Micro would complement the higher price of the Switch 2 and its pricier games, and fill the entry level market. (Yes DF, such a thing exists.) They've done it before with the GB Micro, Wii Mini and New-Style NES. Thanks again for your insight.

Top of the morning to you good friends & colleagues. With Switch 2’s battery confirmed by Eurogamer to be worse than Switch numero Uno. Why doesn’t someone make a handheld with swappable batteries? Think of all the extra bling bling these companies could make, by selling people 1-7 extra batteries. Mark Cerny!! I know you’re watching! Please, if you are working on a future PS handheld give it swappable batteries. Double please!

Patrick Llaban

How does Oliver’s workflow differ from the rest since he’s using Mac? Does using a Mac present its own challenges when capturing video content for consoles/PC gameplay footage?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight Lads, I bet you are all relieved to switch-too the regular direct slot, after all the overtime! I've been watching all of the hands-on previews and impressions on youtube and I've come back with two major takeaways - the LCD screen is very competitive with the OLED, with what looks like better colour gamut and peak brightness (based on IGNs video), though likely not black levels. Secondly, the big thing people are noticing - is how when using mouse mode (say in metroid), they can pick the joycon up off the surface with zero hitches, and it just seamlessly switches control modes to a more conventional non-mouse control scheme. This is presumably using the gyros, but perhaps other joycon sensors to detect the way in which the controller is being held. It could simply be mouse sensor losing focus on a surface of course, or could be something else. Nintendo do have some patents on sensors for detecting where fingers are when they are approaching buttons, and I'm wondering if this is what we could be seeing here. Either way, this should mean that mouse controls are incredibly flexible, and can be shifted in and out of without pausing or changing settings. Any thoughts on interesting ways in which this could be used.. i.e. the seamless ability to jump uninterrupted between control schemes during gameplay?

Pol Kallamata

Given the Switch 2 features a 120hz screen that is available to everyone, do you foresee 40fps being a common target refresh rate for developers - allowing them to push image quality on the device and still achieve a pleasant experience in terms of fluidity and input lag?

Someguyperson

In a post from the developer of Monster Hunter Wilds, they mentioned that in the update coming to the game this week, "Improvements coming very soon include a reduction in VRAM usage and an upgrade to the DirectStorage version of the Steam version in Free Title Update 1. These should result in an overall improvement in stability for our PC players." It looks like Alex was right that there were issues in streaming in data and VRAM usage. Hopefully you guys will have an update for us sometime soon?

Someguyperson

According to a report that came out during GDC, 67% of all hours spent on PC games in 2024 were spent on games that were 6+ years old. 25% of time was spent on games 2-5 years old and a grand total of 8% of the total time was spent playing games that were under 2 years old. It seems absolutely crazy that comparatively so few people play new titles. Do you agree with that? How would this change you recommendations when it comes to purchasing a new video card? How does this impact your perceptions of the comments section when the vast majority of PC game time was spent on extremely simple games from a graphical perspective? Some other fun facts: 7.1% of hours were spent playing Counter Strike 6.4% of hours were spent playing League of Legends 6.2% of hours wer spent in Roblox 5.8% were spent on Dota 2 5.4% were spent on Fortnite These 5 games account for 30.9% of all hours on PC spent for the year of our lord 2024. https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/pc-gamers-spend-92-percent-of-their-time-on-older-games-oh-and-there-are-apparently-908-million-of-us-now/

Adding onto this comment, NVIDIAs blog post has this specific comment "Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) via NVIDIA G-SYNC in handheld mode ensures ultra-smooth, tear-free gameplay." notably it says in handheld mode.

Ryan Luker

Looks like Nvidia is here with the receipts for the DLSS / ray tracing features on the Switch 2! https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/nintendo-switch-2-leveled-up-with-nvidia-ai-powered-dlss-and-4k-gaming/ Most interesting is maybe the inclusion of g-sync in a portable handheld display? (not sure if I have seen that before) > Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) via NVIDIA G-SYNC in handheld mode ensures ultra-smooth, tear-free gameplay. not a lot of extra info otherwise though... but would be curious what kind of experiences we might see that leverage ray tracing in some way?

PS3Inquisition

Hi DF crew. With the price for Switch 2 being what it is, I can’t really imagine millions of parents will be thrilled to buy one for their kids. I think the OG Switch will be popular for years to come, but how long do you foresee Nintendo supporting it with new games? It would be foolish for them to kill it off within the next few years, right?

AfreemTheDream

Greetings, Foundrymen! Do we have any information on whether Switch Joy-cons or the Switch Pro Controller will work with Switch 2? The only thing that's really different is the C button and it's not a required feature for gameplay. Cheers!

Spodlude

Nintendo just did their treehouse direct. For four hours straight the chat was saying only “Drop the price!”. Thoughts gents?

1040STF

With the higher prices asked for new games, the 10€/$ discount on the digital versions and some cartridges that are just keys for digital games, it feels to me like the Switch 2's strategy is the biggest push we have ever seen to force digital distribution to gamers. But add to that the high prices for SD Express cards (97€ for a 256Gb sandisk on Amazon France right now) and the bigger space some games are gonna ask for (50Gb announced for Street Fighter 6 without knowing if that covers the season 1-2 characters), and I start to think we might be facing a two-headed issue here: stockage. On one hand, cartridges feel less attractive or necessary. On the other, digital might even more expensive too because of the SD Express tax. Am I too pessimistic here? How do you feel about that?

Will Cooling

Given the cost of the switch 2, would it have been wise to launch with the lite handheld-only version alongside the docked version? How much do you think such a lite version could be sold for?

kingpenumbra

Hi all, I'm struggling to see this as a either a question, me pointing out something I like, or a splattering of my RAYTRACING obsessed thoughts. In GTAV Enhanced the settings.xml shows BVH settings for different object sets. On Maximum RT static objects have a range of 512 and dynamic are 128. I really like this as it means realistically one day a poweruser could throw up every setting to 1024, which is something that disappoints in other games (Avatar Frontiers of Pandora's highest BVH quality doesn't satisfy me as something future users can get everything out of, and the game doesn't seem modable to improve that) It seems like managing BVHs are important. Which games have the best BVH management (Avatar while I mentioned isn't full detail models in the BVH, it is really performant. Stuff LOD popping inside BVHs in ray traced reflections is noticable) Is tech like MegaGeometry managing LODs inside the BVH or it is just a way that full detail models can be rendered into the BVHs.

Looking at your recent review of the pc performance of the last of us part 2, and reflecting on both the performance and graphical features available on other Sony games ported to pc, such as God of War Ragnarok, I can't help but wonder if the relatively poor quality of pc ports is quite deliberate on Sony's behalf. Call me cynical, but it's surely in Sony's interest in terms of selling consoles and keeping people in their ecosystem, to make sure console versions of their games stack up well compared to the pc counterparts. Intrigued on your thoughts on this issue. Thanks muchly and keep up the awesome work!

goregutz

Now that the switch 2 has been unveiled, what kind of a node shrink would you expect down the line for a prospective switch 2 lite, assuming the OG switch 2 is on Samsung 8nm (which is most likely is). Also, what quality of life improvements would you like to see on a future OLED model?

goregutz

Hi DF crew! We just heard the rumours of the mid-range battle Mage Arc GPUs being internally cancelled by Intel. My understanding is that the b580 and b570 sold quite well, driver overhead issues notwithstanding. What factors would have contributed to this decision? Is it concerning that no one is challenging NVIDIA on the high end? (Even though a B770 would have been upper midrange at best).

Snorlax cat

Am I the only one worried the switch 2 weights almost 400 grams which is a 30 percent more than the OG? I know pc handhelds are heavy but they are actual pcs! An iPad mini is less heavy than a switch!

Mehzeb Chowdhury

Hi DF Crew, While the Switch 2 promises a tangible performance boost, with DLSS-supported graphics, a premium display, and enhanced Joy-Con haptics, it's positioned launch price starting from $449 risks moving into a price category historically unorthodox for Nintendo. This is a company long celebrated for its budget-friendly, family-focused hardware, and it is this shift coupled with the potential of Trump-era tariffs on Chinese-manufactured electronics, that could spell trouble. U.S. pricing could well be over $500, particularly if supply chains cannot migrate quickly enough to lower-cost countries. Consumers, therefore, are likely to have more difficulty squaring Nintendo's historical record of affordability with a product that now rivals premium-tier pricing. To what extent do you think that the Switch 2's anticipated price (once more pushed even higher by prospective tariffs) risks undermining Nintendo's long-held reputation as a value-oriented console manufacturer, and how can Nintendo prevent its performance aspirations from scaring off its intended consumer base?

ConcreteLlama

Hello Foundrymen! I have not built a PC for many years and I'm looking to build one soon. However these days the market is just downright weird and I'm not sure what the best thing to do is. Obviously it's a bad time to buy a GPU and I'm happy to wait for things to settle down but what about other parts such as the CPU and RAM, which are more readily available? Is it worth getting what I can now and starting my build as soon as a wild GPU appears or waiting on the GPU first? (5080 or 5090, I have not yet decided). This question is partially sparked by the fact I saw an article saying DDR5 is going to get more expensive and also the current global economic situation with this bizarre trade war.

Alan

Hi guys, what takeaways do you think Xbox and PlayStation will have from the Switch2 reveal considering they are working on their own hybrid handhelds?

Alan

Hi Guys, The Switch was very much a handheld system, but this Switch2 seems to me to be more biased towards being docked and connected to the TV with the boost from more power to output 4k etc.

Alan

Hi Guys, there seems to be a lot of positives in regards to the Switch2 but is there anything you were disappointed not to see regarding the hardware/tech.

DaJaCo (Dan)

GVC are reporting that Cyberpunk on the switch 2 in its current build has only been in development for 7 weeks, and is being done in-house by CDPR. They are aiming to have a 40fps "performance mode" and a "circa 30 FPS + VRR Quality mode". I'm wondering if the later will have some minor RT features.. what do you think are the chances? The frame targets are very interesting, looks like the VRR window is very low!! ?

RAVE_DAM0S

John, the expert on BFI, I've got a question regarding Switch 2 and its 120Hz panel. Could Nintendo aim for a target of 30 or 40 frames per second while implementing black frame insertion to reach 60fps or higher? Would this approach enhance both frame rate and motion clarity without putting extra strain on the GPU?

Alan

Hi Guys, Do we know what version of DLSS the Switch2 can support, the GPU is a 2022 vintage, but DLSS is up to 4.0 now, so is the Switch2 only DLSS 3.0, will there be a DLSS update, is that possible?

Ryan Luker

This tegra chip has been out for ages, did Nvidia ever do a second iteration on it to bring the size down?

Ryan Luker

I vaguely remember hearing that Sony approves all PC ports nowadays if they are around ~2 million in budget. Maybe they are trying to cut corners here and not give developers the time needed to make a great PC experience? (kinda sad as I assume extra money into making a great PC port will pay tons of dividends in customer good will and increased steam approval rating hah)

Pomps

Hey guys! Good vibes gaming mentioned in a video that Sega told them directly Yakuza 0 was running at 4k 60 on switch 2. Any insight as to how this is achieved given the base PS4 version runs at 1080p? At 7:37 https://youtu.be/DTAaKtKY8Qc?si=qXmFDNOMaORzo672.

1040STF

Could the japanese Switch 2 model be an excellent way to get a spare Switch 2 and store it until a software hack is released? I'm pretty sure it will be then easy to re-install all languages after that!

(Don’t be a) Richard

Why do you think the software (in)comparability list is as long as it is? Both Sony and MS seemed to transition gen on ATI hardware without many games being incompatible outside of those with reliance on hardware peripherals (Kinect and PS VR1). Is the list we’re seeing a result of Nintendo using Nvidia, or something else?

Mr Bespoke

Hi DF Crew! Now that the Switch 2 has up to 1440p at 120fps gaming do you think rival companies like Microsoft will commission an update for the two Ori games to run at 120fps and 4K 60 or will they hold it back for their up coming handheld device? Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

Kyle LeBoeuf

Hey gents! First time question asker here and my question is this: obviously there’s much that has already been written and spoken about the Switch 2’s $450 USD price point. What does this mean for consoles and handhelds releasing in the future? Obviously Nintendo is usually on the more affordable side of the console pricing scale, and this seems like a dramatic escalation of the cost of hardware.

Pomps

Just watched the opening cutscene again and it seems like it's pre- rendered? It looks way too good to be real time

Abandoned Walnut

Interesting. I mean obviously I am just speculating but ultimately Sony have to make business decisions to maximise the profit. Didn't some Sony exec recently comment that pc ports were like 'printing money'? It's hard to imagine they don't have the budget to properly optimise pc ports in that respect.

Ednamode

While gauging the gpu performance of the switch 2 was somewhat doable the cpu performance has always been unclear. Now we know the switch can handle the phantom liberty expansion on what's apparently a 7-week port of cyberpunk. Will this or anything else announced be a good way to gauge the cpu performance of the switch?

M

Hey DF Crew, Nvidia has released a presser where they state the Switch 2 is 10x the performance of the Switch, has DLSS, RT, HDR, and VRR. https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/nintendo-switch-2-leveled-up-with-nvidia-ai-powered-dlss-and-4k-gaming/ Given the side by side footage of BOTW, TOTK, and MP4 where they're comparing 900p30 to 4k60, it seems that power is being put to great use. Then you look at Yakuza 0 running 4k60 when it was a 1080p30 PS4 title, as well as the side by side shots of Cyberpunk 2077 IQ being nearly indistinguishable from the PS5 version, and the question has to be asked. Have we SEVERELY underestimated the power of this handheld? I for one am GOBSMACKED as more 4k60 footage gets released and I'm curious about your thoughts. Cheers!

DaJaCo (Dan)

If we are looking, well, at least 2 years into the future - I don't think OLED will be the display tech du jour - by then, Sharp (Nintendo's favourite friendly local display developer) will probably have commercially available QDEL displays (it already has small prototypes of similar size to the Switch). QDEL is directly emissive Quantum Dots - and offers all of the self-emissive advantages of OLED (i.e. fully self emissive pixels with very black backlight-free blacks and per pixel precision illumination), while also offering wider colour gamut, and higher brightness.. AND it should be cheaper than micro-LED or mini-LED .. and quite possibly cheaper than OLED or QD-OLED. So my money would be on QDEL if all goes well for that technology.

goregutz

Interesting observation

DaJaCo (Dan)

I agree, however I think that would only have been viable (in terms of thermals and battery life) on a smaller process node than the likely Samsung 8nm - so I'd imagine that once the price drops on smaller nodes (even further), they'll do a die shrink for both a refreshed Switch 2 (with better battery life, but the same externally) and launch a Switch 2 lite.

DaJaCo (Dan)

I just bought a 1TB Micro SD Express and let my injured wallet solve the problem.

DaJaCo (Dan)

To switch to Switch 2 or not to switch to Switch 2. At least the name is subliminal encouragement!

DaJaCo (Dan)

Based upon what people have being saying about the Cyberpunk Quality mode on Switch 2, they are targeting 25~35 FPS with G-sync / VRR - this would suggest that it has Nvidia's hardware display module enabling a very wide VRR window - perhaps even 1Hz ~ Max.. which would mean basically any game can use VRR when portable if desired. Their performance mode on the other hand is targeting a locked 40FPS I believe..

DaJaCo (Dan)

Yes - and it also has Nvidia G-Sync with a very wide VRR window (like 1Hz~120Hz), which means they can go for 25~35Hz VRR or locked 40.. or 40~60 VRR.. etc. etc.

DaJaCo (Dan)

I think that would certainly be a compelling product, if they went for something truly pocketable at a low price point. The carts are also much better suited to it - you don't have an absurd situation like with the GB Micro - where the cart takes up most of the console volume!

DaJaCo (Dan)

Surely the mouse controls will be just as precise?

DaJaCo (Dan)

At the end of the day the chip is customized, they could have simply added more tensor cores to facilitate simultaneous DLSS / Voice features.

DaJaCo (Dan)

I'd keep an eye on cyberpunk's quality mode closer to launch

inebriatedPorcupine

I actually prefer the Wii mote over a mouse for FPSs. It is harder to be as precise as with a mouse, but the difficulty is actually immersive (unlike a gamepad where the difficulty is immersion breaking). Thanks for comment! I'll add this to the question for clarity

M

Hey again DF Crew, One thing that has been pretty annoying is how many people are complaining about the price of Switch 2 games when it's pretty apparent to me they are simply adjusting for inflation. When the Switch launched in 2017 prices were $60. Adjust that to today's prices and you get about $79. Make the whining make sense....... 🤷🏾‍♂️

Pomps

I have heard some conflicting information regarding resolutions. I'm pretty sure DF mentioned BOTW was running at 1440p for example, but I have heard other info suggesting 4k. Clarification would be appreciated as there seems to be a lot of misinfo regarding switch 2 atm

M

Agreed! The Nintendo tree house footage stated 4k60 so......

Pomps

I didn't see that part! They have to be using DLSS right? I can't see the switch 2 being able to brute force totk at 4k 60 like that

M

Exactly my read. This has got to be DLSS for res upscale. Even at 10x going from 900p30 to 4k60 is more than 10x

Ryan Luker

Sadly most wage increases have not advanced at a similar rate and folks feel it when new hardware comes out and they cannot afford it. Technology is ultimately suppose to make things cheaper over time though but new hardware and games demand more and more scope / human capital to create which feels like the inverse! If we look to history, the last video game bubble burst was not a fun one but it did reset prices and the industry to a lower level (at the cost of many studios / hardware producers).

Ryan Luker

DF has eluded to it before but the gap between handhald and docked is quite large this time around (4x the amount of "juice" between them). I wonder how close the docked switch 2 will get to the PS5 in performance then...

Ryan Luker

Interesting! I wonder how much of the VRR functionality will be supported through compatible TVs when in docked mode (g-sync PC monitor -> switch 2 dock would be an interesting test).

Ryan Luker

It kinda sounds dumb but I would love a "console" / "docked" only version as I personally never really need the portability factor of the switch 2. It could even be a cheaper variant as you wouldn't need the fancy screen and just package in a pro controller along with the console. You could even bump up the power budget maybe as the cooling solution could be enhanced. (I am probably in the minority here though, so it most likely is a moonshot and not economically hah)
