Hello there and welcome to the latest weekly update from the team at Digital Foundry! Fresh out of this week's #content meeting, here's what the team will be up to this week. We have a couple of absences this week so we might be a light a video or two, but regardless, here's what we have going on!

But before that, we do have a hands-on opportunity with Switch 2. Almost certainly the same material as seen last week - but is there anything you'd like to see from a Digital Foundry perspective. Write comments with your input below!

Tom is producing an interesting video based on the news that Switch 2 is getting GameCube support - he'll be talking about the tech we are getting but then going back to 2018 to remind us of the Wii emulator running on Tegra X1, which only ever appeared very, very sparingly on Chinese versions of the Nvidia Shield. After that - potentially a quick look at Street Fighter 6 on Switch 2, which has some interesting properties when stacked up against the PS4 and Xbox Series S versions.

Rich (ie me) - time permitting (which I've not had a lot of recently), I'd like to take a quick look at the DLSS transformer model, its viability for Switch 2 and general thoughts on why we've not seen much in the way of DLSS on the current crop of games.

Alex has just taken delivery on an Intel Arc B580, meaning that the stage is set for an upscaler face-off between FSR 4, XeSS 2 and DLSS 4!

Oliver continues to deliver the goods! He wasn't able to make this morning's meeting but I understand he's looking to go into a little more depth on what he thinks of everything we've seen so far on Mario Kart World.

Will continues to power the Eurogamer side of the DF equation in terms of adapting our videos and is also working on a range of keyboard reviews. And he's amassing a wealth of third-party Switch 2 cases, peripherals etc!

John is taking a well-earned break.

That's it for now! As ever, comments, suggestions and more are welcome in the box below!

I’m mostly interested in an in-depth opinion and description of the experience with the Switch 2 Display, as other outlets have only vaguely described it as „definitely better than Switch 1, but not as good as the OLED“

I don't know how much possible it could be but a first impression about the input latency of the Switch 2 would be amazing. Of course I expect the Zelda games to be more responsive in 60fps but I would love some reel feedback on that. The dream (and that's the "maybe not possible part" because of the hands-on conditions) would be to compare a non-enhanced Switch 1 game in docked mode, because that's where the latency was the most noticeable with Switch 1. Cheers!

Nils Roos

Me, too. Can you take a Switch OLED along for comparison? 😀

This is also what I'm interested in the most. It will be hard to test in the usual lighting conditions during such an event, but I want to know about black level and contrast especially. Maybe even bring a Steam Deck OLED for comparison please.

MVG definitively stated that the Switch 1 apps running on Switch 2 are using a translation layer to enable Switch 1 instruction calls to run on Switch 2, so S1 apps running on S2 should run exactly the same as they would on S1. However the Nintendo Direct did claim there would be some inherent advantages of S1 apps running on S2, like faster loading. Could you please look for other potential benefits in situations that challenge the Switch 1, eg. the 30fps slowdown in LoZ: Link's Awakening, the DRS in Wolfenstein II (if it runs on S2) or the base-building in No Man Sky.

I would definitely like to see your thoughts on the visuals and performance of Cyberpunk compared to the Steamdeck, ROG Ally and other handhelds that DF have tested. Could be a good comparison tool for now until you are able to do a deep analysis in a few months

To follow up on a question I posed myself, Monster Hunter Wilds seems to have much fewer framerate lurches & hitches with the latest patch on my 2060 Super, but performance still isn't very good overall. It seems like the framerate isn't going up & down drastically like Alex showed when just panning the camera, but I would say the performance is the average of those framerates as opposed to being improved in a substantial way. It would be good to have you guys take a look at it with all your fancy tools though. Or, if you want me to provide you with some numbers, you could potentially give me your tools? Not sure how that would work.

For whenever you go hands-on with the Switch 2, could you check to see if the back of the unit is a big metal panel that effectively acts as a big heatsink? I would expect that to be the case given the fan in the dock and the "U" shaped kickstand, but I haven't seen that before confirmed anywhere.

Another nitpicky question regarding the Switch 2 hardware is the orientation of the polarizer. If you have polarized sunglasses on, can you see the screen at full brightness? Is there color banding if you view the screen through a polarized lens from various orientations/rotations of the lens?

Also, is dynamic recompile of shaders required? To my mind that could be a download package as the switch 2 is a fixed platform so can be recompiled and download as part of a package to allow running of a game in backcompat mode.

Might be worth to do a df direct special after the hands on. The Hands on could really reveal a lot of new info on for example the screen, thr hdr, cpu performance och docked vs handheld performance. I really dont understand why it took so long for nintendo to invite you. Your reporting based on the hands on will be far more interesting than the reports I have read so far

I too am curious as to how the dock will cool the unit. I'm suspecting there are holes at the bottom of the unit through which the dock blows air through perhaps? I haven't been able to find any detailed photos of the bottom of the unit to confirm.

Ac shadows got a pssr patch yesterday, maybe worth a look

If it's possible for you to get your hands on it, what framerate does Metroid Prime 4 at 1440p run at? Is there any VRR issues at 1440p like there was initially with the PS5?

Taggen86

Check the OS and see if there are any new options added (VRR toggle, hdr calibration)?

what does dog need with a starship?

how are the joycon joysticks feeling compared to the pro controller? do they feel more premium and comfortable or still a bit dinky like switch 1?
