Sup! Hello there and welcome to our weekly post that appeals to you - our Patreon Supporter audience - for your input into the next episode of DF Direct Weekly. Got a news story you feel we should be discussing? Or maybe have a question for the team? As always - occupying the accompanying webzone with your input and we'll check it out in due course!

Who's on the panel this week? It'll likely be Rich (ie me), Oliver and Alex, but let's see what happens. And what are we discussing? Well, we'll be mulling over the two independently produced Switch 2 motherboard breakdowns and those all-important SoC details. We'll also be discussing the Asus ROG Ally 2 and Project Kennan leaks, while at the same time getting to grips with the disclosure that the GTA 6 trailer had both cutscenes and gameplay in it.

Oliver's a busy chap, but if he finds the time to look at the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Switch 2 creator's voice video Nintendo put out, we'll be talking about that too, but that's it for this post. And now, let's move straight on to that invitingly empty box that is - with a profound sense of inevitability - 'below'.

I read a lot of posts on social medias of people complaining GTA VI seems running at a locked 30fps, some even stating they would never play that game "in such poor conditions". If I'm not mistaken, a new GTA running at a locked 30fps would indeed be a first but in a good way. All previous GTA would rather ran at a poor unstable framerate, most of the time between 15 and 29fps on their original releases. Am I wrong?

Hi Team! With Sony leaning into PC ports, x86 hardware, and subscription services, are we starting to see a Sega-style shift away from traditional consoles? SteamOS and handheld PCs like the Steam Deck are making fixed consoles feel increasingly redundant—and the PS5 Pro hasn’t exactly lit the industry on fire. Is there really a strong case for a PS6 at this point? Shout out to ChatGPT for helping me turn my 3AM ramble into something actually coherent!

Stephen Marshall

Howdy Y'all! I know we love great graphics 'round these parts, but I'd like to know what the team's favorite "ugly" games are! Thanks!

Question: hardware wise, given recent price hikes, are we now a three horse race: PC, PlayStation and Switch (2) ?

Abadaba-Pling Boink Wee Juhu

The GTA6 HQ downloads were in Xvid. WTH?? Explain, do you often get high bitrate xvid footage nowadays or is it as weird as it seems?

TheGreatJumanji

Hello all! I was just thinking about the inevitable PlayStation 6 in a few years, and I was curious your thoughts on the possible VRAM situation. VRAM in consoles has increased in capacity every single generation, but does it need to continue? Would games be massively held back if the PlayStation 6 shipped with 16GB of GDDR7, with maybe an additional dedicated pool of memory for ML based tasks? I don’t see VRAM continuing to double in capacity like we saw from the PS4 to PS5, and I’m worried about the longevity of recently released 12 or 16GB cards if the PS6 has 24GB of VRAM. Sticking with 16GB while providing a dedicated pool for frame generation seems like a way to keep the price lower as well in these trying times. Thoughts?

Alex’sRayTracedBottom

Rockstar says GTA 6’s second trailer is “half gameplay, half cutscenes”—but what does that really mean? It’s clearly not raw, player-controlled footage. More likely, it’s replay-style gameplay, which often gets visual upgrades. Just look at Gran Turismo: during gameplay, not all cars have ray tracing—but in replays, they do. Is that what we’re seeing with GTA 6? The lines between “in-engine,” “real-time,” and “gameplay” are getting blurrier, and with that, so does the truth.

Not a question. Just to answer your questions from last week. I made the mistake of buying an LG A2 Oled last year, so I am limited to 60 and partner won’t let me buy a new tv so soon. So for now stuck at 60 with no VRR. I did upgrade to a 9800x3D and has resulted in much better performance in Pathtracing for Indiana Jones and RT for games like Hogwarts Legacy, Jedi Survivor and Spider-Man 2, so I am very happy even if I have the most OP 60fps machine on the planet. P.S. I use frame gen to get from 40/50 to 60 for 4K path tracing by setting VSYNC to on and max frame rate to 58 in the Nvidia app, and this seems to work just fine!

Marcus

Hello Digital Foundry team, I’ve noticed more and more in-game benchmarking tools being introduced in recent titles. What are your thoughts on them? Do they risk giving a misleading impression of real-world performance, or are they an invaluable resource for PC gamers looking to optimize their settings? Personally, I’ve found them very useful in some games—Avatar, for example—but in others the results rarely seem to match the actual gameplay experience. On a related note, I really appreciate your optimized-settings guides, but they often focus solely on “performance” modes. Would it be possible to include “quality”-mode settings as well? For those of us with higher-end hardware, having a high-frame-rate, high-fidelity option would be fantastic. Thank you!

Lexxington87

Has the pricing changed for DF? The $5 tier is now £7.50 so wanted to be sure that was right 😆

Peter Karadimas

Hello gents! Do you think Microsoft’s claim that the next Xbox will be “the largest technical leap in a hardware generation” is just vaporware at this point, or is it in a completely different price bracket from the traditional console.

LosCV29

I'm worried about the state of big AAA, single player games and their sustainability. It seems that a large portion of people play F2P. Another large portion play old games. That leaves a very small percentage of us consistently buying new games. I think it's obvious that this is an expensive hobby and this is a pretty mature industry... It's done growing at large rates - if at all. Can AAA survive with studios continuing to squeeze the small number of us who consistently buy new titles? I have to be honest... I have a lot of disposable income, but even I feel squeezed and disregarded.

Hi DF team! There are suggestions the new Gears of War Reloaded is going to be digital only. Are we seeing the slow but unavoidable end to physical copies of games!?

Pomps

Hey team! I don't know literally anything about chips (which you can probably tell by my terminology) but I saw some people saying the switch 2's SOC is arranged closer to ada Lovelace, than ampere. Could this lead to any performance/optimization gains at all? Would love your insight.

Jonny_5a

More of a production question than a gaming one, ignore if it goes too far into how the sausage is made at DF Towers. I assume you have some kind of data store at home, I am looking at a new NAS but dont want to go for synology, wondered if you had any recommendations in this area

Andreas Wright

Hi DF dudes, in the latest GTAVI trailer breakdown you discussed if it "could" run at 60fps on consoles and this is doubtful but would a 40fps mode be possible on PS5 Professional for example? Seems like it would be a nice to have middleground. Cheers fellas.

Hello DF Directors! Following up on the game key card conversations, my question is about how important patches are to video game preservation. Many games are totally playable off disc or cartridge, but some games, like Horizon Forbidden West and its launch performance mode shimmering, had issues with major aspects that were addressed through patches. Even if you can play some games directly off physical media, is it a problem that the "worst" version of an experience is often the one preserved? Is there a solution to this issue of patches being somewhat core to the gaming experience these days, short of reprints of the media? Could Nintendo have made a cartridge where patches were permanently encoded onto them, or is this just a lost cause in the age of digital distribution?

Peter

Hi DF Crew, hope you are all doing well! Really enjoyed your tech coverage of GTA6 trailer 2. Would love to hear your thoughts on A) What concessions do you think will need to be made for Series S? B) How do you think the inevitable PC version could push beyond console (aside from the obvious framerate and IQ)

Pomps

I was also wondering if the switch 2 video by rich mentioned in the weekly update would be "dropping" in the coming days.

Hobobench

Hello Gentleman, with the Switch 2 motherboard breakdowns seemingly confirming an 8nm chip, I am curious your thoughts on why this is? If there was potentially a 5nm option and those are cheaper to produce/more power efficient then what would be the downside going with the smaller option?

Peter

Hi DF Crew, hope you are all doing well! Really enjoyed your tech coverage of GTA6 trailer 2. The game undoubtedly looks incredible, but I can't help but feel that ommiting PC at launch is odd. It would be, on the right hardware, the place where that game would shine brightest, esp when it comes to frame rate. I understand prioritising platforms for optimization but at this point, PC is almost certainly bigger than Series X and S and with the resources Rockstar has, I'm sure it would be possible to get all version, including PC, in a great state. It's all speculation of course, but why do you think PC would still be considered secondary for Rockstar in the year of our lord 2026!

andre surles

Perhaps Oliver could speak to this, with games moving towards an always online state and NPC characters becoming AI Chat enabled/aware. When should we expect open worlds to become more reactive to individual players actions, history, the news/radio etc? What are the limitations if that piece of tech is being streamed in with guardrails?

PS3Inquisition

Hello DF. The massive success of the Oblivion Remaster has got me thinking that we’ve opened the floodgates of the remaster gravy train. I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty more games that don’t actually need remasters, but I was wondering, if there was just one game that each of you think desperately needs the Oblivion treatment, what would it be? Thanks!

ThatGuyWhatDidThatThing

We've often heard that RT reflections on rough surfaces take more time/cycles/work than mirror reflections. Can lowering the resolution/quality/distance of reflections (linearly or otherwise} as the roughness increases reduce the impact? The thought being that rougher surfaces should hide the loss of quality. Or is the potential savings not enough to offset the increased load. Could this be another place ML hardware can fill in some blanks to get us to Good Enough?

[PLACEHOLDER]

Back in the days before streaming ruled, there were certain movies where it almost didn't matter where in the run time you stumbled across it, once you saw it was on you'd inevitably watch it through to the end. It's not a perfect comparison, but are there any games like that for you guys, were you pick it up with just the intention to mess around a little bit and before you know it you're hooked again, despite a massive backlog of unfinished/unplayed games?

Snorlax cat

guess now! gta 6 at ps5 pro 1440p pssr to 4k or 1800p and spatial upscale? I fear they might mess up like the checkerboarding on red dead 2 if they use pssr

Full House's John SteamOS

When do you anticipate getting hands-on with Switch 2? Presumably enthusiast press will get it weeks prior to general availability, or will you just get it at the same time as the rest of us peasants?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight Lads! - With recent word from Rockstar that the GTA 6 trailer was running on a base PS5. What enhancements would we realistically expect to see on PS5 Pro - the Pro has quite a big advantage in RT, and by the time GTA releases, the FSR4 flavour of PSSR may be ready. Perhaps a 40fps mode, RT shadows, or extra body hair - especially for the chests of Professionals?

kate

With both console and GPU pricing continuing to rise, more and more games requiring ray tracing, and the cost of living also rising for many people, do you think there's a risk of a significant portion of gamers being priced out of the hobby?

Scott Hanson

Hi DF Crew, PlayStation released it top selling games of April and the top 3 are Microsoft Published Titles. Does this show Microsoft made a good choice releasing on other platforms. Will all future Microsoft Titles be cross releases and where are all the Sony First Party Titles.

Kaveh PG

Hey guys, why are inputs tied to frame rate? If game logic is all wireframe and numbers, why wait for the graphics to be rendered to register an input? Is this what they call "polling"?

Jiminy the 26th

Hi! If the Project Keenan handheld ends up being an Xbox product launching in 2025 or even 2026, would that potentially help or hurt the leaked Sony handheld expected around late 2027/2028?

Graczdari

Hello Digital Foundry team. I have three questions - you can choose any of them. The first one: analyzing the second GTA VI trailer, do you conclude that the “impossible” doesn't actually exist (even on consoles) and you can achieve truly amazing things, as long as you have a huge production budget - including research and development (R&D) that maximizes the efficiency of development tools? Only then can you realistically say, “we have reached 100% of the capabilities of the available hardware”? Second: If we assume that the video footage was captured on a standard PS5, do you see options for adding RT shadows on the PlayStation 5 Pro? Or will Rockstar go for a consistent graphical experience across all target consoles (as was the case with Red Dead Redemption 2), with the only real gain on the PS5 Pro being higher image quality? Third: Rockstar Games claims that the trailer has gameplay scenes. In my opinion, there are at least two scenes directly from the gameplay (without the HUD, of course). I'm referring to the scene at 1:58 (the car explosion) and 2:00 (the fight on the plane, a bit like from Uncharted). What do you guys think? : )

Alan

Hi Foundrians, Now that we know what GTA VI will be like running on base PS5, what do you think people on the PS5-Pro can expect, and how do you think it will scale down to the Xbox Series S? PS. When can we expect a DF Special on RAGE and a visit to Rockstar for a deep dive into the tech used?

Caboose967

Aloha DF crew! You've just been promoted to the god-kings of graphics. With ultimate power over hardware and software, what would you tell manufacturers and developers to prioritize, beyond the usual 'more RAM' and 'fix shader stutter'?"

Vester13

Hello DF chaps, I've been wondering why shader compilation stutter has only been an issue throughout the last decade or so, shaders as we know them have been commonly used in games since the early 2000s correct? Did something change recently with the way games are rendered on the software or hardware side? Or was this always an issue with older titles that people just didn't take note of back in the day and which isn't experienced now that we know of it because modern CPUs simply brute-force their way through? I'd appreciate if you could enlighten me on this, cheers!

Naryoril

Guten Tag DF Team On the off chance you'll answer this: Why do you expect we didn't enjoy something we have been listening to for 90 minutes? Bid you farewell und ♪auf wiedersehen♫

Full House's John SteamOS

Rich, what is your Plan B for promoting DF since losing your bid to become the next pope?

Pomps

One more question: on the FF VII remake creators voice for switch 2, they have exactly 1 (one) shot that is running at 60fps. I highly doubt the switch 2 will be able to achieve that, so what gives? First the THPS footage, and now this? Is Nintendo just careless with the footage they present?

BespokeEP

With confirmation that both Rockstar and Mark Cerny watch DF, how have you bespoke gents dealt with the fame? Do you get autograph requests at the grocery markets? Ok, let’s be serious for a minute, maybe less, but I can’t help but think the statement Rockstar put out saying the trailer was half gameplay was a direct response to Alex!! GTA games do have that “cinematic action” camera view when driving that is pretty pointless, maybe they added it for walking? What say you?

GlacierIsland

Do you have industry sources that would be conducive to leaks for the internals of BOM (Bill of Materials) for computer hardware?

Daniel M

It's been rumored that Microsoft's Series X successor will be a more open, PC-like design that can run games from other game stores like Steam. The obvious downside of this is that, with Microsoft being unable to collect revenue from these third-party game vendors, they will be unable to subsidize the cost of the machine as is typical in the console business. Do you think the Series X price increases are at least partially intended to prime people for this future?

Spodlude

Hello gents, I suspect many, like myself, enjoy listening to your directs over several evenings. It takes me about 3 evenings to get through as I use the directs as an engaging yet calming sleeping aid. I don't say this to criticise your content or voices, they're not boring, it simply places me in a relaxed state where I feel satiated well enough to slumber. I wonder how many listeners share this experience and what your thoughts on it are. Perhaps I'll be asleep when you read out this question...

Spodlude

Hi Alex, correct me if I'm wrong but I feel I rarely see an AMD card used in your PC reviews. Is there a space for this in the future? Can you elaborate on your rationale behind the inclusion of specific cards for optimised settings etc.

Spodlude

Richard, I hope this does not offend but the election of a new pope got me thinking about the accumulated wisdom of older men in their respective domains. If there was a pope of gaming media, would it be Richard Leadbetter? Are you aware of any older wiser sages that still preach to the masses of gaming Richard?

Taggen86

Could alex explain the difference between TAAU and TSR? Both generate a higher perceived resolution by accumulating data from multiple frames, but they are still not the same?

Taggen86

Do you think we need to wait until ps6 and the pc version to get gta 6 in 60 fps? Also do you expect a shorter windows between console and pc gaming this time than usually is the case with rockstar games considering the popularity of pc gaming in the younger crowds?

PaperMartin

Hello, I got a pretty simple question. Current gen game engines, for all their fault, are the most able to scale across different modern hardware than they've ever been, but graphics can only be scaled down so much before a game is not worth playing on a given platform anymore, and the way a game is designed (especially big simulated open world games) can still require decently powerful hardware to function at all. So basically, in your opinion, any chance for a Switch 2 version of GTA VI?

Taggen86

Really appreciate that my partner lets me buy anything I want with my money when I read comments like this. Being stuck with a 60hz tv sounds really really bad. Btw you cannot frame gen from 50 to 60. If the output fps is 60 then you are going from 30.

Taggen86

What kind of upgrades for gta 6 would you like to see for ps5 pro? For me the dream upgrade would probably be fsr 4 upscaling combined with a 40 fps mode.

Taggen86

Did you ever get a response from io regarding dlss in switch 2 hitman?

Taggen86

What is the likelihood that we will see fsr 4 quality upscaling in gta 6 on ps5 pro considering that the game is now releasing in 2026?

Speedworth

Hello Bespoke Brothers! YouTube channel “geekerwan” got their hands on a switch 2 mobo and dove into the soc specs. Can you and team look into this video and share your thoughts?

RL

Have you seen Geekerwan's video about the Switch 2 chipset? Edit: I see someone just beat me to the punch in asking so never mind.

RL

Borderlands 4 was shown in a PlayStation state of play. I know you guys at DF aren't fans, but I am. So I'm wondering about your thoughts on what was shown.

goregutz

Hi DF crew! It turns out that the raptor lake woes are not over yet as Intel is rolling out another fix for an issue that was supposed to have been fixed already! After years of releasing good and stable products, what do you think went wrong with this generation?

10 Watts Raytracing

Hi DF! Is it really fair to chastise graphics cards with 8GB of VRAM in 2025? I mean, even uncompressed, 8GB can still hold a *lot* of texels. It feels like lately we've given our video games exponential increases in VRAM, only to get subtle quality improvements. In the age of Direct Storage, could it be that video game developers are also a little inefficient in their use of VRAM?

Spodlude

New mafia gameplay trailer out, thoughts gents?

Aaron

Hi friends! Given the higher price of the Switch 2, do you think Nintendo will release an awkward “final” revision of the Switch 1 to keep a price-conscious, high-margin product in the market for another few years (similar to the no-WiFi Wii, 2DS XL, and GB Micro)? Here’s my idea: Switch Lite XL — a Switch Lite with a bigger, even poorer-quality cheap LCD and no cartridge slot.

tod weitzel

What happened to the Wii homebrew channel? Does jailbreaking a Wii have to start over development now?

Kaveh PG

Hey DF, it's been my only dream in life to get a song on a radio station in Grand Theft Auto. Having produced electronic music for the last 18 years, to be honest, I thought there would have been more chances, but I know I'm good enough to impress anyone behind the scenes, I just need my shot! Who do I need to email? Do you know anyone? Do you guys need music?

goregutz

Hi DF gentlemen! News just broke that AMD released an update to FSR 3 (version 3.1.4) do you think AMD will continue to iterate on FSR 3 despite FSR 4 or are it's days limited?

Octolimar

Why do you think so many games ship without hardware lumen on PC? It's literally baked into the engine, yet when playing Expedition 33 there's SSR everywhere I look, and the software lumen reflections simply do not look that good generally speaking. Since the game has shipped without it, its also not possible to mod it in with an engine.ini edit. What gives

Plasma4Life

Gentlemen! I have a proposition for you! If you could find spare time in your busy schedules, I think it would be a fun video idea to go through GTA 6’s Trailer 2 shot by shot and stake your claim, gameplay or cinematic footage? Thoughts? Cheers!

RAVE_DAM0S

Dear Digital Foundry sages, On the topic of Project Kennen and the Xbox Handheld ... you've often spoken of Series S performance in a handheld as unnecessary on a 7 inch screen, but hear me out. If one were to wield such a mythical device, both in the realm of portability and when docked to a home display, would not the allure of Series S horsepower at 1080p docked and 720p mobile be undeniable? Surely, the balance between mobility and power deserves deeper consideration. What, dear gents, am I overlooking? Thanks, A humble seeker of truth!

RAVE_DAM0S

I think this is a great question. I do wonder how much the Xbox Series X successor will be priced, especially considering it may not be subsidized!

Someguyperson

Intel recently added their 18A-PT fabrication technology on their roadmap that should debut in 2-3 years or so. The main new feature here is "hybrid bonding", which is the process that AMD uses to attach 3D vCache to their processors. If Intel does go this route, do you see all gaming CPUs from both Intel & AMD going with 3D vCache? Considering the increasing performance gulf between parts with the additional cache and the parts without, would we all move to 3D vCache enabled CPUs barring the lowest end products? Is this just more fuel to the "PS6 will have 3D vCache" fire, considering everyone in the market is going this route (presumably)?

Someguyperson

A GTA 6 question: could you guys touch on the material properties of the retroreflective high visibility vest and the gold sequin dress in the trailer? I've never seen material properties like those in a game before and I was wondering how the devs did it, or if you guys have seen something similar in a game before. Is it an RTGI effect, a special shader, something custom, or something else you know ?

Someguyperson

The limiting factor there isn't GPU horsepower, but CPU horsepower. If you are CPU bound to 15 FPS, there's not much reason to release a game on Switch 2. I would think that GTA 6 would run like N64 Goldeneye in multiplayer on a Switch 2, which is to say in the 10-20 FPS range.

Someguyperson

DirectX12 changed things to give game engines lower level access to GPU hardware in exchange for the game engine now needing to deal with shader compilation. Prior to that, game engines had some higher level access to the GPU, but the drivers handled all the shader compilation. AMD/ATI & Nvidia were competent and so you didn't have the shader compilation stutter we currently have today.

Someguyperson

You could potentially have a different BVH of a lower quality that you could use to trace against higher roughness materials, but that would require twice as much work maintaining a BVH and it would take additional memory, so it's not exactly a free lunch. It would really depend on the game and what optimizations you could add there.

Someguyperson

8nm is Samsung's last node that doesn't require EUV machines. EUV is expensive and largely why semiconductor prices haven't been dropping. By utilizing 8nm, Samsung can fabricate many more SoCs and Nintendo has a cheaper chip to produce.

IFTEKHAR SAFI

Is there any plan to do a hardware unboxed style 5060ti 16gb vs 8gb video to highlight and bring more attention to why we need to have over 8gb VRAM across the stack ?

digitalfoundry

Pro CPU is only 10% faster than base so it would be a struggle.

Lexxington87

Got damnit i forgot about that 😆 glad I asked i’ll re sub on PC!!

digitalfoundry

I refer you to the second paragraph of the above post!

RL

Oh, imagine my embarrassment.

digitalfoundry

We literally use external mechanical HDDs for back-up.

PaperMartin

I wasn't talking about GPU or CPU power specifically, just console power in general to include both + things like the SSD and ram

inebriatedPorcupine

In the past new console generation brought to table performance and capabilities that allowed new game design and concepts that simply weren't feasible in the past. It seems this trend has died down, especially in the coming generation with the Switch 2 probable popularity on the one hand and it's PS4 like capabilities on the other (with faster storage). What do you think? Are we stuck in a game design Limbo for the next 5-7 years playing the same game concepts with possibly slightly better graphics?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Are you sure it won't have 4D vCache?

DaJaCo (Dan)

It's likely a small team wanting to optimize around a single target set of visual features as much as they possibly can - i.e. upscaling tech will need to play nice with RT features, and often does not. Certainly something they should consider adding post-launch now that the game has been so successful.

DaJaCo (Dan)

I thought the 2x17.2W PMIC spec is interesting - upto 34.4 Watts theoretically available to the SOC (only during docked ofc).

DaJaCo (Dan)

This was part of my question too.. could be ready by then now! Also looks like there is lots of use of RT on the base console - so the PRO will have some major advantages for RT performance, they could add extra RT effects - i.e. the missing RT shadows.. possibly hit 40FPS.. with more RT than the base console.

DaJaCo (Dan)

They could probably achieve something similar to the Series S target with a lot of work and no more than 30fps. It'd rely heavily on "Nintendo-DLSS" to upscale from 540p or lower. The work put in on cyberpunk shows it's possible - and arguably the switch 2 has better hardware for running some lightweight RT barebones features than a Series S - it's just a question of whether it'd be so compromised that it's no longer worthwhile.. and whether Rockstar would be willing to put in the work when they'll be rolling in cash anyway.

DaJaCo (Dan)

I'd say yes to get it running with most of the RT features on, at 60fps with decent image quality. However I'm optimistic that the PS5 Pro version could have lots of nice RT effects and run at 40fps. It really needs that 40fps mode.

PaperMartin

I'm less concerned about graphics and more about the switch being able to support the gameplay side of things at all. Graphics can be scaled down, RT related features can be simplified or replaced with non hardware RT replacements, etc, but if they can't get the game *playing* the same as other platforms at at least 30fps then I doubt they'll release it on switch 2

Taggen86

Agree. did the upgraded version of gta 5 on ps5 have a 40 fps mode? If not I am quite sceptical that we will see it here even on pro.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Are you saying too much control has been handed to incompetent developers?

DaJaCo (Dan)

I'm hoping that by the time the game launches - the FSR4 derived version of PSSR will be ready, and so the PRO will have better image quality, additional RT effects / fidelity (i.e. the missing shadows) and hopefully have a 40fps mode.

inebriatedPorcupine

If my display refresh rate is 120hz, would you say the upgrade from regular frame generation (4000 series) to MFG (5000 series) is mostly pointless, considering the recommended base 60 fps?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Hopefully the FSR4 flavour of PSSR is ready for GTA6

DaJaCo (Dan)

I've always wondered why they don't just render rough RT surfaces as though they are smooth - and then apply some kind of "roughness" filter / shader / texture on top to simulate roughness or occlude some of the reflection where there are imperfections in the surface. Perhaps this is an area where A.I accelerated rendering techniques could assist.. i.e. a post-process that converts RT mirror faces into rough faces.

DaJaCo (Dan)

A lot of people would say Bloodborne.

DaJaCo (Dan)

A game with as much hype and anticipation as a GTA release will likely maximise sales by staggering it's release - because some PC owners will buy the console version, perhaps even buying a PS5 Pro or another console to play it - then when the PC version releases, they might buy it again to max it out and transfer their save file. It's a system selling behemoth so it can stagger and reap the rewards of optimization and double dipping where other games might not.

DaJaCo (Dan)

The latest analysis by that youtuber that got his hands on the SOC suggests that its actually neither 8nm or 10nm - but something of a hybrid, having features of each - presumably to maximise yield or reduce cost. Having said that, samsung 8nm isnt a lot different to their 10nm in the first place. It does at least create a lot of scope for a die shrink model at 5nm or 4nm or less. The big question for me is whether they will wait that long before releasing a lite model - because a lite model is really a LOT more suitable for small children.. they should really try get that out the door ASAP, but this big and hot chip isn't really suited to a smaller cooler shell..

DaJaCo (Dan)

It's going to generate the entire game in realtime based on your voice commands and gestures. The days of game development are over. The days of DIY games begins!

Peter

Yes I'm sure this is definitely a factor, though I wonder if, in 2026, what you gain with this truly outweighs the losses of sales if released in parity across platforms. Pc gaming is a lot bigger now than it was 12 years ago when GTA 5 launched and even 8 years ago when RDR2 launched. Would also be interested to know from a tech/optimization pov, when a company has as much resources as rockstar

DaJaCo (Dan)

It's probably going to be 24GB GDDR7 and the CPU will have 3D Vcache - also, given the way that NVMe drives are going - they could easily double the storage speeds of the SSD to circa 14,000 MT/s. Speaking of ML - the 9070 XT has 389 INT8 Dense TOPS (compared to the PS5 Pro's 300), so Sony has really gone quite heavy on the ML already for PSSR. I would expect they will at least double the ML performance - perhaps 600 ~ 1000 INT8 Dense TOPS and lean heavily on PSSR and frame Gen. They may also make better use of sparsity or lower precision etc. than their current models do.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Fingers crossed for 40fps on Pro.

1040STF

That would be cool but I kinda expect the game to be so optimized there's not enough room for a stable 40fps on Pro. Fingers crossed though!

Your thoughts on hogwarts legacy for switch 2 confirmed supporting dlss? Dlss seems to be supported in many switch 2 games after all (allthough at generally very low resolutions in line with the testing from Rich). Having a 1440p output res in hogwarts is however not what we expected. Maybe there is a new switch 2 dlss lite version after all?

I play on a 144hz screen witj a 5090 and find the increase in input lag between 2x and 3x too high for it to be worth using. On a 120 screen the base fps for 3x would be below 40 which would be too low for many people. I think DF said that 60 was a good base fps in the past and that 30 is too low

I’ve been hoping for a “Switch Home” for years. I still use my PlayStation TV and would love a version of that for the Switch, I imagine that would be significantly cheaper to produce.

By May 2026, there is a chance to implement FSR 4 into PSSR and thus radically better image quality on the PS5 Pro. On the other hand, to tell the truth, I do not believe in any 40fps mode. Looking at how other Rockstar games ran on the target consoles, I'll be happy as there will be stable 30 frames.

Lads! Switch 2 is NINTENDOOMED! The 1080p display seems like a MAJOR hindrance. Outside of indie games almost nothing will run native and steady, forcing downwards of 540p or lower portable resolutions (with terrible scaling) for the life of the device. Does anyone on the panel today truly believe they chose that screen for any reason other than higher resolution screen=better for sellability because we all know the average consumer won't care about the nuances. I just wish they stayed with 720p and went all out a la Steamdeck OLED. Stay cromulant fellas.

Stutters were a big problem in Unreal 4 and that was DX11 (10? 9? Maybe)

Hello, fellow DF Direct sleeper as well here. It's gotten to the point where I know when I fell asleep if I completely missed a certain topic. Also share that this isn't a criticism, it's just 3 dudes with soothing voices talking about videogames, what's not to love :)

I also saw that, I wonder if they're just running it with double (triple?) buffered v-sync, and framerate is just oscillating between 30 and 60+ fps. Sure hope not!

I'm leaning towards it just being PC footage that made it's way to the creators voice.

At the beginning of the generation, the Xbox Series X had a, on paper, silicon advantage over stock PS5. Now that the dust has settled a bit on the PS5 Pro launch and have seen more bespoke patches for PS5 Pro, what does the practical gulf in performance look like between the Series X and PS5 Pro?

Hello! I'm going to build a new computer this late summer. My last PC I built was with a RTX 1070 in it, so it was a while ago. And the last GTA6 trailer got me thinking, and I know this can be hard to guess at this stage. But they confirmed the gameplay was captured on a PS5, and they most likely aim for 30fps on that thing. So what do you think one would need for kind of hardware to run GTA6 in 60pfs 1440p on PC?

Do we think we’re seeing a de-emphasis of MS on GamePass. With a strong PS5 response and a willingness to increase hardware prices which will likely further reduce interest in MSs own hardware, it feels like the company is pivoting and looking to leverage its PS5 footprint for growth and more traditional software sales. It almost seems inevitable with Xbox hardware sales petering off, GamePass subscription growth seemingly hitting a saturation point and a market that in general that has subscription fatigue.

It would be good if I could read huh 😂😂 cheers

Hi DF team ! Do you think GTA 6 will have a 40fps mode on the PS5 Pro ?

Samuel Gao

with clever optimization, I'm sure you can get 60FPS on a RTX 3080/4070ti.

Greetings DF Team, It sounds like backwards compatibility for Nintendo Switch 2 is going to be a mixed bag. I recall Sony was in a similar predicament with the PlayStation 5, but I don’t remember many PS4 titles having serious issues. How is the situation any different for Nintendo? Is this going to be another Xbox 360 in terms of backwards compatibility? I still have nightmares about that… Thank you for all that you do!
