Content

Hi everyone, we're in a bit of a holding pattern until Switch 2 arrives and there's a bunch of background stuff going on, so it will be a bit of a quiet week, but here's what's cooking in Digital Foundry in the wake of this week's #content meeting.

Rich (ie me) has an interesting project afoot. I'm trying to dig into the data provided by our tools to produce a 'GPU lookback' video with a difference - I'm pitting the RTX 2080 Ti against the RTX 5060 and the results are fascinating. I won't spoil too much of the content but another aim with this style of content is to produce a video quite quickly while at the same time providing a fascinating narrative about the general pace of graphics evolution. I think it'll work out!

John is working on a DF Retro EX episode concentrating on Tokyo Xtreme Racer - a brilliant game across several gaming eras and is back and we're going to celebrate it. Retro tier users will be first dibs on this. Beyond that? Switch 2 prep - and perhaps a livestreamed day one experience!

Tom is considering a look at Elden Ring: Nightreign, but he's our man on Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 and we want to get a lot of the comparison points bagged before the console arrives so we can get that tech review to you as quickly as humanly possible.

Alex is putting his efforts into a Painkiller RTX video with a look at Doom The Dark Ages path-tracing and perhaps F1 25 further into the distance. If only we had more than one Alex!

Oliver is prepping for Switch 2. He's our point man for Mario Kart World and he's getting the narrative into place ahead of time and putting together his comparison points for that.

Will is working on our Eurogamer content, of course!

So, while we have a bunch of Switch 2 projects in the works, I guess my parting question to our Supporter audience is this - what kind of testing would you like to see in the review? For me, I'm really interested in battery life under load! Looking forward to your comments on this one.

What I would find interesting is battery to power and if we can control power like wattage or something like that I'm guessing most likely not

Question Generated By JensenGPT

I do think Series S comparisons (beyond what we've been able to get with preview material) and Steam Deck + ROG Ally comparisons for Switch 2 will be the most enlightening, at least when it comes to studying the capabilities of the system. For example, we saw Cyberpunk 2077 in still shots VS Series S in the most recent DF direct but not shots in motion, which I imagine will be a lot easier to get once you have the game and don't need to rely on press material sent by Nintendo or the developer.

You should make Alex the point man on all Switch 2 related coverage. He never stops talking about how excited he is about it; maybe more so than Crysis 4?

Maybe it’s time to bring back the ever fabled DF HDR videos to at least talk about HDR performance on the new console. I think a lot of us think that the HDR on the on board screen probably won’t be super compelling because it isn’t an OLED or locally dimmed LCD, but I do wonder how it’s going to look when being output to an OLED screen. Personally, I suspect that maybe Nintendo decided to integrate HDR from the very beginning specifically because they know so many users have HDR OLEDs and Mini-LEDs and they are probably planning to release an OLED edition eventually. Thank you for your great coverage and I’m also really interested in the battery life performance of the switch 2 so I’m there with you Rich. Hope you are keeping yourselves healthy during the hectic Switch 2 period.

Some loading time comparisons between Switch 1 carts, Switch 2 carts, Internal Storage, and microSD Express would be interesting to see if there’s any big differences. I think either Zelda BotW or TotK would be the best candidate for this since they have both Switch 1 and Switch 2 Edtion carts available

CaptainRainbow

Would be curious to have some joycon latency and internet speeds metrics on Switch 2. These were quite bad on Switch 1, an improvement would be nice

I want to see you scrolling through the eShop to see whether it loads without constant hangs.

I'm curious to what the active cooling is used for in the dock. Can you use "docked" mode with a third party USB-C to HDMI/power adapter without active cooling?

El Barto

Comparisons between Switch 2 and other handhelds like the Roger or Steamdeck would be nice. Besides that I'm keen to know if switching between docked and handheld will work as smooth as with the predecessor - and of course what docked mode brings to the table performance-wise.

Testing I want to see for switch 2: -HDR/contrast/brightness screen quality testing (vs og switch and oled/steam deck) -How good is the handheld experience IQ-wise -is the mouse controls any good (input lag) -what are the screen menu option -VRR handheld: is it working in any games -loading times vs switch 1 -Battery life in handheld mode -Some apples to apples test with steam deck (e.g., in cyberpunk/hogwarts) in handheld mode I am primarily interested in things that we know little about so far (e.g., the handheld experience). We already know a lot about how it performs docked to a TV so that is not as interesting. Also most of us are likely to use it mainly in handheld mode.

I am very much up for John day 1 live stream. Also wouldn’t say no to a Rich unboxing live stream…

I would be curious for lag comparisons with Switch 1. The Switch 1 was notorious to be the console with the more lag. It's even the only console where if you plug the official controller through a cord, you would get more lag thanks to the dock.

Do we have a definite date yet for Doom path tracing?

As a PC gamer who has been thinking about getting a handheld, I’m interested in the overall experience of Switch 2 vs Steam Deck. You wouldn’t typically think of these two platforms competing but I think they do. For me it’s about time and value. I can’t justify getting both. On the games side, I could take either or. The deck would give me more time and freedom to play my Steam library, but the Switch would give me access to the Nintendo library, which I haven’t been part of since N64. So what I really want to know is what is the more enjoyable experience overall between these two platforms? Which is easier to use, feels best in your hands and to travel with, has the better battery life, UI, and quality of life features? Thanks!

One huge advantage the deck oled has over switch 2 is the ability to use moonlight and stream all your games from your pc to the deck in 800p/90hz/HDR/DLAA/reflex/path tracing. I am a dad with a two year old and have not got much time for gaming. And this is how I use my 5090 most of the time these days :) Playing current AAA games on the deck locally sucks unfortunately. Ugly as hell and low frame rates. However the experience with moonlight is just amazing. You should probably get a switch 2 as well just for the nintendo only games. The game library is epic.

Like a lot of other people here I would like the focus to be on the handheld mode, Does vrr work for all games How good is the HDR on the screen Performance and resolution for games covered in handheld mode to be the focus How does it compare to the SD or the Ally in handheld mode performance How does it compare to ps4 in handheld How do some of the trouble games run on switch 2 vs switch 1, and what kind of scaling is used for back compat games if any

Henry Clark

As I bugged you about on Discord, the thing I’m really interested in with Switch 2 is input lag, both over USB and wireless. The Switch has some laggy input that gets even worse over USB thanks to Nintendos poor USB implementation and I’m really interested to see if they resolved that. Especially with Nintendo Online SNES controller! Need faster inputs for those side scrollers

Austin

I'm curious about the VRR experience in handheld. As far as I know I haven't seen any confirmation of the VRR window that it supports. I would be curious to know if this can be discovered through testing. Another display related point would be the quality of the HDR presentation. The other main testing point I'm mainly curious about is battery life. Obviously this would need some more extensive testing but a general idea would be nice. Is a game like Cyberpunk 2077 going to get the min 2hr spec? What about your "average" Nintendo game like Mario Kart World? Curious to see the results. Cheers!

Mr Fujisawa

The Switch 1 to Switch 2 updates - zelda, kirby, what really are the differences. Any unsuspected downgrades as a result?

Eric Hurst

I would love to see Switch 2 and Steam Deck comparisons across common games, particularly games that are marked “verified” on steam deck. I’m curious to see how the “out of the box experience” is compared between the two systems.

Someguyperson

I absolutely love DF HDR content. The Control HDR video is what I show to other people when they ask what HDR is. You really just have to see it to understand it.

Someguyperson

I have a PC & a Switch 1 since the day it came out and I think that's a fantastic combo. A thing that most people forgot is that PC ports were what really kept the Switch alive for the first year or two. Stardew Valley & Celeste were 2 huge games to come out in the first year of the OG Switch and it looks like Nintendo knew that going into the Switch 2. The fact that you can literally plug a mouse in, or use a Joy Con as a mouse will be huge to bring absolutely every PC game under the sun onto the platform. Add in DLSS support and I think you should probably get a Switch 2.

Someguyperson

My questions are: 1. What does the skin temperature look like after playing in docked mode for a couple hours? I'm assuming it will have a much higher TDP than the OG Switch, so it might get really hot to the touch. 2. Hyrule Warriors & the two chibi Zelda games: do they run at a consistent framerate, or are they doomed to poor performance forever? 3. Do those bootleg knockoff games John played get to a perfect 60 now, or did the developer just put some "sleep(0.5 seconds)" functions in there? 4. Is the back of the Switch 2 metal to help dissipate heat? What's the skin temperature in portable & docked mode? 5. What's the polarizer orientation of the screen? Can you see the full brightness with polarized sunglasses on? Also, Rich you mentioned that you feel the next generation of consoles will have relatively similar rasterization performance and greatly increased RT & tensor (AI) performance. The Switch 2 vs. Series S comparison is basically that in a nutshell. If your theory is correct, the two should have similar performance, but if the Series S beats out the Switch 2, that's a clear indicator that RT & Tensor performance aren't nearly as important as raster performance. That would be a good way to frame some comparisons.

Interesting to see when switch 2 comes out if it works well with back compat after Nintendo’s not booting games list

Dan Matte

Would love to see: Switch 1 back compat (how does it all work and how do a broad array of games run?), the new “Switch 2 Versions” of games (Kirby, etc.) + Switch 2 update patches, and VRR implementation details. Thanks as always!

Jasper

I would love to see the Zelda switch 2 editions and perhaps a back compat compilation with some heavy hitters on switch 1

L p

I second this, but a fairer comparison would be optimised settings for the Deck (as even for verified games I can improve on their graphics configuration quite easily) or as close a possible a match for the Switch 2 settings.

L p

I’m concerned about screen quality vs the OLED (and how exactly does a LCD panel without local dimming reproduce HDR content?) Also, because the dot pitch of the screen is similar to that of a Switch Lite (279 vs 267 PPI), but to a greater degree than the original Switch, presumably many games are going to be outputting at 720p with a blurry upscale to the 1080p panel resolution (eg Cyberpunk is just 1080p docked, so it’s handheld res must come in lower). Does that then mean some games on Switch Lite actually look sharper than their Switch 2 counterparts? What about emulated Switch games, which are presumably still capped at their old output res (unless they’ve been patched) ?

antonioni

Im interested to know how it if or how it will display switch native resolutions for games that dont have updates. The resolution for many native switch games isnt a clean integer scaling into 4k are they?

Polyh3dron

I'm going to need a lick test on the new Switch 2 carts. Do they still have that iconically awful Switch 1 cart taste? Something worse? Better? Inquiring minds want to know. It'd also be nice to get a performance check on Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Link's Awakening, and Echoes of Wisdom.

MartyMcFleiy

Hi, I also have a question regarding to the Switch 2. It's just a small feature that I think hardly anyone talks about. With the Switch 1 you could simply "switch off" the device during the game or go into standby mode and within seconds you were back in the game after a break, for example. Does this work again with the Switch 2 or are there restrictions? For people with little time are so very effective short game session possible without accepting booting times.

Darth Plaguies the unwise

I'd like to see comparisons between Totk on switch 2 with its 4k/60 update vs an overclocked switch 1

10 Watts Raytracing

I'd love a video to put Switch 1 backcompat to the test. It'll be crucial in the early days of this new system. How are the loading times on these older games? Is there an upscaler applied for the 1080p handheld panel? What's the battery life if I just want to play Doom 2016? What about performance?

Marcus

I rewatched your Pokémon Scarlet and Violet video and that game truly performs horribly, but it’s apparently going to get a Nintendo switch 2 update. I think it might be one of the most interesting games to see updated and also how it performs so I just wanted to throw out that it would be good to see it looked at quite early.
