Well here we are! A console launch is a rare thing indeed and we're going into this one with you might call the bare minimum of actual hands-on time. We had the London showcase event, but we've not been invited to any of the other press events, so work on Switch 2 won't begin until later on in the week. Here's what we have lined up.

Rich (ie me) is going to be working on a review for the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT which I'm unreasonably excited about. PS5 Pro performance with 16GB of memory for $350? Well, that's my hope. Let's see eh? After that I'll be course-correcting onto whatever needs to be done with Switch 2.

John is finishing up his trip to Japan and heads back to Germany imminently. He'll be arriving in time to start work on Switch 2, with a view to doing a live stream on the machine at launch. Actual Switch 2 #content? He'll be working on Fast Fusion first.

Tom is polishing up his work on Elden Ring: Nightreign before moving on. Moving on to Switch 2 of course. His efforts in banking Cyberpunk 2077 assets ahead of time continue apace, and he's also keen on looking at The Witcher 3 under back-compat. Why? Because it hammers both CPU and GPU, making it a good one-stop-shop for getting an idea of any potential performance enhancements.

Oliver will be working on Mario Kart World, along with DF Directs for Summer Games Fest and the Microsoft showcase... possibly! We are likely to be filming the Direct later than usual this week. Probably Saturday morning, owing to Geoff's Keigh3 extravaganza.

Alex is Switch-free - lots of PC stuff in the offing of course, and we'll be following the events of Unreal Fest with much interest, Palpatine-style.

Will is a lucky chap - he's on holiday for the week!

As usual, please feel free to suggest topics for anything you feel we should be covering. With the weeks ahead, we'll necessarily have to be selective about what we do though. Thanks in advance and I hope you have a wonderful week.

Playing nightreign I was thinking fromsoftware really needs at the very least RT reflections in their games. Like they could never do RTGI if they wanted to but reflections are really bad especially now that they're doing open world stuff and seemingly not using reflection probes anymore (if they ever did)

Any expected time frame for the john livestream? Also guess that the DF direct style switch 2 review will be a separate video coming next week?

(Don’t be a) Richard

Posted this a few weeks back when you were looking at things to test with the Switch 2, still I’ll just repaste what I wrote last time as I think it could be something interesting to explore: Something I think would be interesting to see once the Switch 2 arrives, is if it’s possible to get a VRR signal using any other readily available USB-C to HDMI adapter. With rumours stating lack of VRR is likely a limitation of the docks chipset, perhaps a third party adapter could still work which could be a win for some titles. Could come undone if they’ve disabled VRR at the OS level for external output however, or if third party adapters outright are unsupported.

Really interested in seeing how some of the badly performing switch games might perform on the successor. Especially the Pokémon titles were apparently Scarlet and Violet is getting an official patch. Will they just raise the resolution and emulate the horrible performance of the original or will they perhaps finally resolve the notoriously subpar performance in that game?

The 9060 XT will make for a great PS5 Pro equivalent PC GPU. Would be neat to see how it compares directly to the PS5 Pro, but also maybe some "what it" experiments for games that were never patched for PS5 Pro.

Frost

I think it could be interesting to see a how Breath of the Wild has evolved between Wii U, Switch, and Switch 2

Aaron

Given your extensive past coverage of Hitman: World of Assassination, I’d love to see some Switch 2 comparisons!

The Shadow-Map

If this comparison happens, I would love to also see the delta between the Switch 2 version and what the max PC experience can do.

AMH

They actually released a video of it today. It seems to be a locked 60 fps.

Alan

Hyped for the John live stream

GeekyDud

Pretty sure John mentioned wanting to do this in the direct but I'd love to see the 2 Grezzo Zelda games tested to see if the Switch 2 can actually lock them to 60fps instead of the constant bouncing to 30 that they have on the Switch

Andrew Lam

I want Alex to cover some Switch 2 content.

Hey guys! A question I'd really love your opinion on given your much more extensive game libraries is: Now that you’ve had a chance to try Switch 1 games on Switch 2 (excluding the obviously niche stuff that’ll never run), is there any compelling reason to keep our Switch 1s around? I caught sight of mine today and felt a pang of nostalgia. But writing this out, I’m reminded that gameshare alone might justify keeping it. Gameshare feels like a really neat feature, and extending support for it to our older consoles feels unusually generous of Nintendo.
