Hi everyone, just emerging for a short while having just finished a Eurogamer post on the Xbox Ally and Ally X and having completed my backwards compatibility tests on the OG cartridge version of Ark: Survival Evolved. Right now, based on games I've tested, I think the Switch 2 can run Switch 1 games at a maximum 2.5x to 2.6x original performance - but per the idea floated at the climax of the last Direct, it's morbidly fascinating to see that not even the generational leap provided by T239 can sort Ark's stuttering problems.

Anyway, the Digital Foundry #content meeting took place this morning - not yesterday as we recorded an Xbox Showcase Direct that we're looking to upload today/tomorrow. And here's what we're working on.

Alex remains Switch 2 free! He's working on a sponsored video about the progression of Doom's technology across the decades, but right now as I write this, he's visiting CD Proyyyyekt RED (as he pronounces it) to talk Witcher 4 Unreal Engine 5 tech demo!

Oliver is working on our Xbox Direct, then moves on to the Switch 2 review. Owing to time constraints, this is going to be a three-person Direct-style effort featuring Oliver himself, Rich (ie me) and John.

In addition to participating in the Switch 2 review, John is polishing up his video on Switch 2 Fast Fusion and is looking to move on to Arcade Archives 2: Ridge Racer - which we think is the first ever full console port of the original game. Beyond that? Embargoed #content.

Tom is projecting to finish his Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 review later this week. This one is rather comprehensive to say the least, as it needs to be bearing in mind the immense scrutiny that occurs whenever we post something about Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2. After that? Well, there's a vast array of potential Switch 2 games to test: Hitman, Split Fiction, No Man's Sky... take your pick.

Rich (ie me) is looking to test the limits of Switch 2 back-compat, per the above. I'm also participating in the review process and - in fact - about to start battery life testing, which is incredibly time-consuming and dull. However, the fact Nintendo did supply a unit in addition to my pre-order means I can leave the battery testing in the background while I continue to work on other S2 stuff.

Will is back from vacation. He tells me that Santorini is lovely this time of year! He'll be helping out with the burden of maintaining our Eurogamer presence.

I'm interested in feedback on what you'd like to see us cover on Switch 2 bearing in mind there's an obscene amount of #content. And of course, do please continue to suggest other things we can take a look at. We're a bit busy but sometimes a truly interesting project idea can make all the difference.

Thanks and have a great week!

Is John working on Death Stranding 2 ? Review codes with embargo date have been publicly announced.

I would love to see like for like comparisons of Switch 2 vs. the PC-based handhelds like Steam Deck in games that are on both!

"Sorry about all the Switch 2 conversations, Alex. To make it up to you we're letting you go on a field trip" Pretty jealous; that'll be a great experience.

Sponsored video. Tread lightly, you know how rabid the audience in the cheap seats can get.

Thanks for the content gents. If you get the chance, could you comment on the Switch 2's screen in terms of motion clarity? I'm baffled that a gaming device released in 2025 can look this bad in motion. Do we think this could be a software issue making the IPS even blurrier than normal?

I'd certainly be interested in a big list of all the games that have a different framerate and resolution on switch 2 (patched or not) and what resolution and framerate specifically, or at least the notable ones Everything runs well but it's hard to find info on *how well* for any given game

For testing switch 2 backwards compatibility, id nominate Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity as one that might be an interesting one to look at. There seems to be something going on with handheld mode that makes it very pixelated on character models. I suspect it was what DF alluded to before - switch 1 games run in handheld mode when on switch 2 handheld, and scaling can be funky. Seems great docked though! Age of Calamity certainly demonstrates back compat oddities.

I did ask John about Ridge Racer on BlueSky about the difference between the AA1 And AA2 Versions of Ridge Racer. And now I see the release is going to be #content. 🎉 I hope John does get to compare the two releases.

Glad to see Will is enjoying Greece! Our country can be a very enjoyable destination for the summer. Excited for all the content that is coming!

Hi Rich you should check out resident Evil 5 and 6 on switch 2. They run perfectly now. 60 fps in both docked and handheld.

I would love to see Switch 2 Cyberpunk compared to Steam Deck and ROG Ally if Tom hasn’t done it already.

That graph reminds me of Vito Spatafore and Bobby Baccala, before and waay before! I can't wait to see the Switch 2 get overclocked running on a Retrotink 4k, I think that would be the ultimate Nintendo experience without an emulator.

Aaron

Would love to see more analysis on whether Switch 1 games with DRS are benefitting from the added horsepower on Switch 2. It seems that may be the case for certain games, such as the Witcher 3?

Lohonnd

I'm curious if there is a meaningful difference in load times between all the different ways to play a game on switch 2. i.e. switch 2 version of BotW via switch 1 game cart, switch 2 game cart, and BotW switch 2 version installed locally on the switch 2.

2.6x sounds like the performance differential between 900p/60 and 1440p/60. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom go from 900p/30 to 1440p/60, which needs 5.12x more performance. Could it be that patched games still rely on the backwards compatibility layer, limiting the potential performance uplift, while "Switch 2 Editions" run native code and therefore benefit from a higher performance differential? Is that something you can test?

Stop the Spread

MVG brought up that the CPU bound games don’t offer that much of a boost, depending on the game, of course. I think he tested Dragon Quest Builders to show it.

Daniel M

I'm wondering that as well. My cartridge version of BOTW loads much slower than my digital copy of TOTK, both with the upgrade packs.

Rich, while I was downloading games onto my Switch 2 I noticed that I could have a maximum of 3 games being downloaded at a speed of 60 Mbps per game for a total of 180 Mbps at any one point in time. Do you guys see this as a hard limit as well? I did a little power consumption testing over the weekend and while in docked mode, the system seemed to draw an average of 10w over a couple hours of playing Mario Kart World. I did see some peaks up to 18w or so in docked mode, but it didn't seem like the Switch 2 was running with much more power consumption at all vs. handheld mode.

I love the 3 person review like the one you did on ps5 pro. I would rather take that one for a console than a typical one person speech

Snorlax cat

emulation limits things, remember how the ps5 had the ps4 gpu clock times for back compat?

Bomli

Yes, so I wonder what the hard performance ceiling is with back compat - and if there is an actual difference between a game that has been patched for Switch 2 vs a proper "Switch 2 Edition". In theory the patched games could have a new executable that allows them to run natively as well...

Blumenkind97

I'd be curious to see if the GameCube app uses 60Hz for the european game versions as all three games support 60Hz, but Tom noticed something off with F-Zero GX at the preview event. Normally those games would prompt for 60Hz on startup but they're not doing that on Switch 2.

1040STF

Well, I know it's not really a field you've been too much into on DF... but I would be curious to know more about Input Latency measurements on Switch 2. The Pro controller vs the SW1 one. Wired vs non wired (SW1 was the only console where wired was worse, thanks to the dock I guess). The joy-cons (vs the one from SW1 too). And if back-compat makes latency better or worse on Switch 1 games... or if it stays the same. And of course the big one : Switch 2 vs PS5 vs Xbox.

Peter

I know you guys have LOADS on but ant plans to cover FF16 on Xbox? Id be really interested to see how Series S performs given the PS5 perf and Res targets

Peter

I literally spoke 1 minute too soon...just seen the Xbox showcase vid!

Kimba096

I watched that video, and the CPU boost is still huge: from 10 fps to 25 fps, that's a 2.5x increase in performance lol
