Hello there and a warm welcome to the 25th news update post in the year of our lord, 2025. This one's a little late as yesterday turned out to be somewhat busy - but there's lots of great stuff in the pipeline. The screenshot above shows a small snapshot of the power consumption analysis that will form a part of our huge Switch 2 review. Lots going on there - obviously we can't be first, but we can be comprehensive and we're looking for a number of original angles to make this one stand out.

But it's not all about Switch 2, here's what we're up to more generally:

John is working on embargoed content that is not related to Switch 2. We'll have more on that next week, but it's exciting stuff. He'll also be participating in the Switch 2 review we'll be taping soon and will be teaming up with Oliver to look at the Switch 1 games that have received bespoke upgrades for Switch 2.

Alex is taking point on our coverage of Doom: The Dark Ages and its path tracing update. He's also going to be working on a sponsored video covering the technology of Doom from its earliest origins through to the path traced version that's coming soon. Beyond that, vacation time!

Rich (ie me) is also contributing to the Switch 2 hardware review, but I've bowed to the many requests for a comprehensive Steam Deck vs Switch 2 Cyberpunk head-to-head. The above image demonstrates that we have the internal CDPR benchmarks working on Switch 2, and with the help of Mohammed, we'll have the closest possible settings match.

Oliver has been working on Switch coverage that primarily explores whether Pokemon's legendarily poor performance is fully fixed on Switch 2. He'll also be editing and contributing to the Switch 2 hardware review and working with John on the #content that covers Switch 1 games enhanced for Switch 2.

Tom is putting together something on MIndsEye to see how it fares across all available console platforms and beyond that? Well, we're not short of stuff to do. FBC Firebreak? More Switch 2 stuff? Let's hear from you on what you'd like to see.

Will has just finished off transcribing our CD Proyyyekt RED interview and returns to Eurogamer to improve our hardware buying guides.

Hope there's enough there to keep you occupied over the upcoming week! There's certainly no let up here. Comments, suggestions and more are - as usual - welcome in the comments box below. Have a great week!

Oh, and yes, if you're looking more closely at the screenshot above, I really do seem to have a PS5 Slim that is no way more efficient - and possibly less so - than a veteran 2020 launch model.

Very interested in that embargoed content of John's! Could it perhaps be the rumored Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 update?

Special Agent Cooper

Apparently Monster Hunter Wilds is now running even WORSE than at launch – according to german outlet GameStar. Surely not something to cover as bespoke #content but I'd be curious to hear your thoughts, maybe in this week's Direct.

What is the likelihood that we will se the grand sw2 review this week?

Taggen86

Any chance that we will see a dedicated Street Fighter 6 switch 2 video from Tom?

It definitely wouldn’t be a trivial task but if Tom is willing to look into FBC: Firebreak, I’d be curious to see a video taking a look at how the tech has evolved since Control. It’s obviously their newest title running on their latest tech but set inside many of the same environments as Control, so it’d be neat to see how things have evolved since it’s sort of like a peak into what we might get in Control 2. Can’t lie and say I have much interest in the game itself (sorry Remedy, GaaS stuff ain’t what I’m here for!) but I’ll definitely give it a few hours this weekend just to check out the tech and give Remedy some of that all important #engagement.

I can only assume John’s embargoed content is for a Death Stranding 2 video. I also think that was at least partially the reason for him being in Japan. Decima is definitely the most exciting and in my opinion, the best game engine out there so if I’m correct, we are in for a plethora of John- Deci-Kojima techy goodness. Buckle up everyone!!!

GTA V just got new ray tracing graphic options in a new update it would be cool to see a video about that.

+1 for FBC: Firebreak coverage of anybody is able to squeeze it in, even if its just on a Direct. As a huge Remedy fan I can't wait to check it out; no idea if there's any longevity in the concept (so far it sounds more repetitive than something like L4D even) but I'm sure it'll have enough of Remedy's trademark weirdness to make it worth checking out. Mostly I'm curious what direction they've taken the engine in for this title - will we have truly envelope pushing options a la Control or AW2, or is it going to be more graphically constrained because of the type of game it is and the resulting priorities...

As someone who plays Monster Hunter Wilds on an 8 GB GPU, I can say from personal experience that it isn't great from a performance perspective. I think the game absolutely warns you that VRAM usage is too high (when it is) and you can easily see the visual issues as a result. I think general performance is a little bit better though. I haven't had the massive stutters I've had with the launch version of the code, but overall average framerates are pretty similar. The textures are also horribly ugly on all settings that could actually work with an 8 GB GPU, so they need to do something to help fix that.

That Pokemon Scarlet & Violet update is the largest performance update I've ever seen in a game. It's to the point where I would actually consider those games to be Switch 2 games with poorly performing Switch 1 ports.

I've seen a bunch of creators advertise the Dbrand Killswitch, which has holes for the Switch 2 to intake air from the bottom holes, but the custom dock extension cuts the airflow from the dock fan to the Switch 2. Do you think the Switch 2 could overheat in docked mode as a result?

Taggen86

Nope it is most likely death stranding.

VeryProfessionalDodo

Ah, that would make more sense, totally forgot that was coming so soon

brandon

the fan in the dock is only there to cool the components of the dock itself, not the console

Curious to see if Sarah Bonds 1 min video on Next Gen Xbox(s) in the living room and on the go means the reports of a canceled first party handheld hold true... Or not. Also now we know AMD is taking up both consoles once again as if we didn't know that already if anyone thinks it will be able to deliver the biggest tech leap in an Xbox Generation

Instead of covering a bad UE5 game that flopped (Mindseye), cover a good UE5 game - The Alters

I hope that for the Cyberpunk comparisons the Deck is running at 720p 16:9 ratio and not 800p 16:10 (which just loses you some perf). I've really no idea why all the YouTubers run their Deck games at 16:10 resolution- and some also think they should be comparing the Deck to Switch 2 docked! (when the Deck isn't at all designed for this, with no boost mode etc). I also saw a comparison video where XeSS gives you far better IQ on Deck than FSR3, so maybe that's worth testing as well.

L p

This actually runs really well on Steam Deck too, I get a basically locked 30 fps with high settings with FSR balanced or quality (dips to maybe 27 fps in the benchmark for one or two frames). And this is with both RT global illumination and RTAO turned on.

digitalfoundry

We've taped it yesterday and just taped some more for VRR. It's in production!

Awesome! A perfect video to start my summer vacation :)

@Alex In Doom:The Dark Ages Path Tracing update, you get massive frame drops when Ray Traced Transparency is enabled, and the Vagary enemy (the big one that resembles... a crab I guess ?) shoots its wall of projectiles. You can avoid those frame drops, while still keeping most of what Ray Traced Transparency offers, by using r_pathtracingBlendedTLASTerminateFirstHit "1".

Want to see FBC Firebreak.. Wonder what changes did the Northlight engine received after Alan Wake 2.. maybe will give us a glimpse of what's coming for Control 2.
