Hello and welcome to our Call For Questions post for DF Direct Weekly #222, which we shall be "taping" early tomorrow morning. It's not exactly been a megaton week for the latest gaming and technology news, but we'll perhaps find time to take a quick look at the Oblivion Remastered patch, while Alex will be sharing his thoughts on Nintendo's ray tracing patents.

It does seem to be a bit of a heavy Nintendo week though! We'll be discussing the Wccftech interview where Virtuos peg Switch 2 CPU to PS4 levels and the GPU to Series S, while Oliver will be taking a look at the Wild Hearts demo.

More stories may emerge, which is where you come in! Are there any topics you'd like us to cover? Oh - and of course, Supporter Questions - please let us have them! But please, no walls of text. It reduces your chances of the question making it into the show. Deadline is 7am BST on Friday and it'll likely be Rich (ie me), Oliver and Alex on the panel!

With how much more efficient the Nintendo switch seems to be, even on an older process compared to the steam deck, what do you think about a theoretical steam deck 2 running on an nvidia chip?

captainbridger

Hello, gentlemen! Switch 2 is showing dramatically faster load times compared to Switch 1 for Switch 1 titles, based on some recent comments in DF videos. But, is that for Digital or Physical titles? What is the speed benefit differential for digital vs. physical when playing Switch 1 titles on Switch 2? Should you always mention the media type when talking about load times on Switch titles?

Conner Patzman

Whats good DF? It is clear how much time you all dedicate to gaming and technology, but I was wondering if you all have any hobbies or passions outside of that sphere. For some reason I can’t help but imagine Rich dominating the pickle ball court. Thanks for all your hard work!

Daniel Tobin

I've been playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 on my 7800X3D and 4080 Super. A powerful set of hardware, to be sure, but I'm still astounded by the performance. I can set every setting to "Experimental" while using DLAA at 1440p and run well above 60 FPS. Dropping each setting down one and bringing DLSS to Quality or Balanced nets me 120 FPS easily. I also struggle to notice any stutters at all - shader, traversal, or otherwise. How does this game manage to run so well while looking so beautiful? Are developers sleeping on the CryEngine? Cheers exclamation point

ConcreteLlama

Switch heavy week, eh? In that case... Alex! This one's for you! When you first set up a new game on PC what's your process? Start the day with Special K? Always run RTSS? Rely on Nvidia App for global limits? Or do you just raw dog it and hope for the best (then tweak as appropriate?). Does this differ when playing games for personal enjoyment vs a tech review? Also when you play strategy games is your army a Battaglion?

punishedvenom harambe

One for anybody really, do you think Microsofts gutting of staff will affect the Xbox brand loyalty longterm and it's image or is this just something us more hardcore fans care about? Keep up the great work!

Thomas Trala

Question for Alex - can you share your shelf of awesome stuff? You weren’t on the previous DF Direct where everyone was sharing their background. Would enjoy seeing it!

Snorlax cat

do you believe that after death stranding 2 we reached the top of what this generation can offer? Is there any other game you believe will be as jaw dropping for this generation? GTA 6 is a possible answer?

USCStevestromo

Hey gents! Probably been pondered many times by now, but what is the likelihood of a Switch 2 lite being released? Given the hardware & power/charging requirements for the Switch 2 undocked, is a 2 lite (with a likely lower power profile) an attractive solution for more portable gamers?

Zero

Hey folks! Has the DF Crew ever considered looking at the annual total power draw cost of gaming hardware when talking about the best value of a piece of tech?

Jonathan Hamilton

How about a DF Retro episode on early surround sound features in console games like Jurassic Park for the SNES?

Nuwa

Its been about over a year since AMD released their own implementation and yet besides I believe Immortals of Aveum, no new game on console have implemented framegen to push past 60fps for 120fps modes despite offering the option to enable on PC, why is this?

Rich, I apologize for the wall of text, but these aren't my words, they're the words of Nintendo execs & investors, which are very interesting. For this question, how does your management style contrast with Nintendo's? Do you think this is a large part of why Nintendo is successful and not laying off 15,000 people? Q13: Can you share your daily approach to fostering a corporate culture that encourages free-thinking, and also speak to how you develop the next generation of talent? A13 Furukawa: We believe that product creation begins with our development teams, and that our talent are the most important management resources. Nintendo provides support to create a cycle of individual employee growth, including various training programs. Our Human Resources Division works closely with individual career development to create a workplace where each employee can fully utilize their abilities and leverage their strengths under our spirit of originality. We believe that both individual capabilities and a company-wide system to support them are essential. Shinya Takahashi (Senior Managing Executive Officer and Corporate Director, Member of the Board): Our software development teams are led by producers with unique personalities, and I feel there is an established atmosphere where everyone can freely exchange opinions regardless of their job function. We also create opportunities for young talent to showcase their abilities, with teams centered around these members taking on the challenge of developing new software. Our hope is that the next generation of developers will grow through these experiences. In addition, we establish opportunities where we actively exchange ideas with the hardware development teams and work together to create products. Ko Shiota (Senior Executive Officer and Corporate Director, Member of the Board): In hardware development, our basic principle is that the cultivation of talent occurs through actual development work. During the development of Nintendo Switch 2, for example, the members who had developed Nintendo Switch and earlier hardware passed on their knowledge about what aspects to focus on in hardware creation and where consumers find value, all through hands-on practice. This became an excellent growth opportunity for new developers. In addition, the integration of our home console and handheld development teams has brought together engineers with diverse skills, broadening the range of experiences we can offer to consumers and increasing our development flexibility. There are more active collaborations across different technical fields, and we increasingly see issues that were previously tackled by the hardware side alone now being solved in cooperation with software developers. We believe this barrier-free development structure is a strength in our product development, and we intend to maintain this culture and system going forward.

Someguyperson

Nintendo talks about the cost of developing AAA games and new graphics tech from their investor meeting: Q17: I am concerned that the improved performance of Nintendo Switch 2 will lead to higher game development costs, which in turn could result in higher software prices and ultimately a decrease in the gaming population. What measures are you considering to address this? A17 Furukawa: Recent game software development has become larger in scale and longer in duration, resulting in higher development costs. The game business has always been a high-risk business, and we recognize that rising development costs are increasing that risk. Our development teams are devising various ways to maintain our traditional approach to creating games amidst the increasing scale and length of development. We believe it is important to make the necessary investments for more efficient development. We also believe it is possible to develop game software with shorter development periods that still offer consumers a sense of novelty. We see this as one potential solution to the concern about rising development costs and software prices, and we will explore it from various angles within the company.

Yoyoyo DF Crew! My biggest gripe with the Switch 2 is currently the VRR in docked (or lack thereof) problem. I was thinking about the free updates they have been doing for Switch 1 games and how they all target 60fps. To me it seems like the lack of VRR in docked mode may be why there are so few attempts at 120 fps. Surely if they were to resolve this issue some of these games may be able to run above the 60 fps target and utilize VRR to clean up any inconsistencies, thoughts?

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hello, gentlemen! With James Gunn’s Superman being a really good movie, do you think we’ll ever get an equally good video game starring the character? Also, what other superheroes would you like to see in a single-player game? Cheers

GetFisher

How come oled monitor reviews have such a lack of discussion about vrr flicker, my experience using any monitor other than the aw3423dw has been flicker city. It's not really an issue when running ideal pc ports as you can reach high enough framerates so it doesn't matter, but not every pc port is ideal and sometimes they lock to 60 or even 30 for cutscenes. How do you guys avoid it since you all use oled monitors?

Poteven

Bonjour DF crew, if Steam and other 3rd party stores come to Xbox current and/or future consoles, why would you buy games on the Xbox store? Play Anywhere feature only makes sense with 2 differents platforms(Open Windows VS Closed Xbox platform), I don't see 3rd party store locking down on ''Xbox PC''. Where any stores compete with Steam, they fail, even if they give games away (Epic game stote). Colin Moriarty on broken sillicon podcast made me really think about it The main objective of consoles is to have a fixed platforms, ease of use with a walled garden so you can ONLY buy from the console store and the console get X % cut from sales.

Marcus

Hiya DF crew. With the upcoming release of Donkey Kong Bananza as the second big Switch 2 exclusive what do you think is next for the console? We expect Hyrule Warriors and Kirby Air Riders as upcoming exclusives this year too, but neither have a date other than winter 2025. Any other big ticket items you think will be coming in the coming twelve months? Thank you for your great work!

Hi all, The ‘Year of the Linux desktop’ is a meme as old as time, but do you think it’s slowly becoming a viable gaming OS? Every time Microsoft does something that upsets people (layoffs, Copilot, Xbox shenanigans, involvement in certain wars), it results in a spike of Linux growth. Valve have challenged the idea that using Linux would necessarily bring a performance hit, with the main issue being anti-cheat and delayed support for new technologies. GN have said they’re moving into Linux testing as they’re disillusioned with the direction of Windows, and even JayzTwoCents. Do you think that, like BlueSky, there may one day be a breaking point where gamers (just gamers) make the shift en masse?

Eric Benoit

Hello DF Crew, do think the Xbox is going the way of Sega? Or the way of the 3DO? Since Shenmue 2 was on Xbox and Sonic was on the PS2 and GameCube, I suppose everything was a Dreamcast?

zurce

With LS 3.1 being so good , have you tried using it to something like OBS for console capture ? If it’s becoming viable maybe we could see dedicated hardware that do frame generation for consoles

The Shadow-Map

If a PS Vita were alive and sentient, and could speak, what would it say to a PSVR2 if it was alive and sentient, and could listen? ------ As Meta Quest 3 / PCVR user, I've returned to my PSVR2 for Hitman: World of Assassination and have been nothing but impressed -- it's been the best VR experience I've ever had. While the experience is great, the entire time I've given bittersweet PS Vita vibes. Sony is making its way back into the dedicated handheld business after abandoning the PS Vita more than a decade ago. Do you think fans of the PSVR2 will have a similar wait for the PSVR3? Will the PSVR3 move ahead or will it be put on hold until/unless VR makes headways in the gaming market from other companies?

GeekyDud

Hello foundry men! Question mainly for Alex about NVIDIA's new neural texture technology. I had two immediate fears come to mind when hearing him explain the tech. First, do you think once this tech is the standard that it will actually result in smaller game file sizes, or do you think devs will instead use the space savings to push texture quality even further (whether needed or not) and we end up with the same gargantuan sized games? Secondly, and as more of a fun but dreadful thought, am I the only one seeing the potential for NVIDIA to use this as a marketing beat for more 8gb cards? Maybe they market the RTX 6060 8gb alongside a flagship game pioneering this tech and use that to say that 8gb is still fine even tho it won't be in almost any other game. Maybe I shouldn't be giving them any ideas. Cheers mates!

Can we have an update on the state of streaming ie GeForce now. Pretty impressive on a gigabit connection if I must be honest

Full House's John SteamOS

Presumably years ago Xbox original planned to have lots of exclusive, in-house developed games that could feed content into Game Pass. But with the massive cull of projects, jobs and studios, and a new emphasis on going multi-platform, the exclusive advantage of Game Pass has been diluted since it first came out. Now, much of the USP of Game Pass is getting to play games on release for a subscription fee (on Xbox) rather than paying full price on release to own the same games (on Xbox and other platforms). Whilst Game Pass has been profitable but not the runaway "growth engine" that Xbox banked on, and given its diluted USP, do you think Game Pass will play an increasing or decreasing role in Xbox's strategy going forward?

Skyrimfest 26 FPS Edition

Do you think there’s any chance the next generation consoles could come with oodles of RAM? It seems a lot easier to me to buy a few more gigs than to push APUs by a few more Gigahertz. If they did, would it be worth it?

TheAdam

Hello DF Crew. The first half of the year is over, what have been your gaming and hardware highlights so far? Which games, including PC-only titles, have earned more attention? What has been the biggest fail of the year so far gaming and hardware wise? My Highlight this year so far: your content!

Communist Mister Rogers

Why do so many games have raised black levels these days? I'm thinking Starfield and Doom the Dark Ages off the top of my head. Is it an artistic choice or some difficulty with implementing HDR/Color Space settings?

Pol Kallamata

How far do you think we are from a broad rollout of Steam OS for any PC configuration? In the next year or two do you think we'll start seeing large numbers of enthusiasts building their own well functioning living room PC consoles?

DudleyTheGentleman

Hi DF force, with the future of modern rendering and simulation becoming increasingly reliant on, or potentially replaced by, ML, how do you think GPU designs will be effected in the years to come? Would merely adding more tensor cores be sufficient, or will we see a more radical shift?

Someguyperson

Welcome back Alex! I was wondering about the current state of DirectStorage. It seems like every game that implements it has issues, even though the API is years old at this point. Will things ever get better? Do we need a new standard to complicate things further?

Crashsune

Greetings, gents! I know the foundrymen are understandably quite busy this time of year, but I was wondering what the status of two long lost DF videos were. Should I still eagerly anticipate the PhyX deep dive video by Alex and the Online Streaming Quality comparison by Oliver? Or give up all hope? Cheers!

Someguyperson

That's entirely dependent on how much you play though. You might have very little time to play games and want the best experience, so power consumption isn't much of a difference. Or, you could play for 6 hours a day, which can add up. Obviously cost of power differs greatly across the globe too. It a bit too hard of a question to answer as a result.

Zero

Correct on all points! My question was a curiosity drawn from Richs work on the Switch 2 v Steam Deck and the different power draws/efficiencies they observed. It would certainly be hard to measure with all the variables, but I left most of them out in the interest of question brevity!

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy Half-Fortnight LADS! Glad to hear that Alex has gotten around to doing a deep dive on Nintendo's ray tracing patents. How likely do you think it is that these "lightweight RT" methods will be made available by Nintendo to 3rd parties? They have made "NintenDLSS" available to 3rd parties.. so it doesnt seem totally impossible does it? Also, how would you compare the Switch 2's RT capabilitities to the Series S, as far as I understand it - there's a good chance it could achieve more without as many sacrifices (due to a more parallel architecture) ?

editor0range

Hi DF crew. So when we think about Switch 2 and it’s raw teraflops beeing around 3 when docked plus DLSS it might be comparable with ps4 pro games. Now when we throw in basic Raytracing (shadows and reflections) - how much power are we left with approximately and can you think of a game with traced rays which already exists and might run on Switch 2 hardware as it is as of today in let’s say 1080p output resolution on the TV?

Thomas Trala

Get Eidos Montreal to do it, the Guardians game was such a huge surprise and so well done

tod weitzel

Can someone summarize the Subnautica 2 drama?

BespokeEP

Cheerio Digital Fondlers!!! With Ghost of Yotei gameplay now out looking mighty scrumptious on base PS5, what sort of improvements do you expect from the PS5 Professor? Have at it lads!!!

BespokeEP

The 6 Foundry Men of the Digipocalypse are always quite busy!!! I say enjoy the videos that are currently out and if these 2 videos that you are looking forward to show up then consider it a welcome bonus :D. Specials usually take the back seat to new game releases for obvious reasons. People rely on DF’s analysis to determine if a game is a buy now or wait

Alan

Hi guys, What happened to all the buzz about gaming on Mac? Hideo Kojima was wheeled out at WWDC23, hyping up Death Stranding, but since then, it has been very quiet. Top games are still being released, but you would think it would be something Apple would be trying to hype up, considering how powerful Macs seem to be with the M3 & M4 chips.

Octolimar

rich, have some more confidence! Hearing you finish the directs with "on the off chance you enjoyed it" is a stab in the heart. We come here for you, take some pride in that.

Octolimar

If nintendo becomes the frontrunner for official 120fps games somehow, could this have a knock on effect on the industry that pushes for even higher frsmerates? Nintendo generally has the perfect balance of fidelity to performance so maybe thats a bit of a high bar, but I think in this age of sub 1080p upsampling, a game like mariokart world should really be a guideline to other devs on how to more efficiently art and render games to produce more performant and beautiful titles.

BespokeEP

According to Christopher Dring, he spoke with an Xbox representative that told him Gamepass is only profitable when you don’t include 1st party development budgets, which is Xbox’s biggest expense. And yes I saw the follow up, but if you read it carefully it says the exact same thing as he was told the day before, just worded differently to confuse you. If Gamepass was profitable, Xbox would be profitable. If Xbox was profitable, they wouldn’t have had 4 rounds of major layoffs in 1.5 yrs. Xbox doesn’t need to make big profit for MS like PS does for Sony.

shedi1982

Salutations gents!! With the new breakdown of ghost of yotei running on ps5 what are yall most looking forward to on the pro model and how does it stack up to ac shadows on the pro thanks in advance

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hey Gentlemen, what do you think are the chances of some PS4 games that already have PC ports appearing on Nintendo Switch 2? Sony might not want to do that given their handheld plans but on the other hand - there’s more money to be earned. Cheers

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hello DF crew, do you know why we haven’t heard anything lately from Intel regarding GPUs? Cheers

Anxiously Chrono Triggered

Hey gents! Now that R* has implemented Ray Tracing into GTAV, how likely do you think we’ll get a similar update for RDR2? There’s a rumoured NS2 port and a long-awaited 60FPS patch so maybe there’s a chance? Would it then be a worthy graphics of the year competitor? Cheers

Dani Ádám

Hi DF! What is your opinion about Ghost of Yotei visuals? The design is still amazing, but what about fidelity? I played through Ghost of Tsushima few months ago and I didnt saw lot of visual improvements in this new State of Play. Sony's big first party franchises always jumped quite big in visuals, for example GoW, Horizon, Spider-Man, but here, I dont see that.

Douglas Fowler

Hey DF Crew, we’ve seen a resurgence of CRT filters and retro-style rendering — what do you think makes a good fake CRT effect, and who gets it right? What do you think of the implementations in the various Nintendo Classics emulators?

Douglas Fowler

Honourable Keepers of the Frame-Time Ledger, In your opinion, what’s the most underrated modern rendering technique that makes a big difference to visual quality but rarely gets called out or enough praise? Is there something that Developers should take more advantage of?

VeryProfessionalDodo

I'm getting increasingly confident that the PC takeover of the living room is just not going to happen in the next year or two. At this point, even if Valve does release a new console, specifically designed for the living room, I'm not entirely sure it will convince droves of people to this new format. This doesn't mean that A LOT OF PEOPLE won't be happy! There's a big community of PC gamers who already plug in their PCs to their living room TVs, and Bazzite is already serving them well. I'm just saying that a good chunk of people who want to play on their living room *already do*. I think at this point we're overvaluing the relevance of SteamOS for the living room, when Bazzite will do the same for the vast majority of people.

DaJaCo (Dan)

I think that from a tech perspective, it will be weaker than AC Shadows - especially compared to the PS5 Pro 40FPS mode which now includes RTGI and all of the RT reflections on water etc. However I think it will be similar to Death Stranding 2 in the sense that it achieves a lot with old techniques.. i.e. high level of detail, draw distance, geometric density, and beautiful art style. Would love to see them add more RT though, especially on the PRO.

DaJaCo (Dan)

Probably the change of leadership has put everything up in the air.

DaJaCo (Dan)

I could see it happening if a game is particularly "Nintendo coded" - i.e. deemed by Sony to be well suited to Nintendo's audience (in the same way that sony recently took this approach with Helldivers 2 on Xbox). It also seems more likely if a game has exhausted most of it's sales potential on their own platforms.. and if they have a sequel due on their own platforms; they could see it as a "gateway drug" towards their own platforms..

DaJaCo (Dan)

It is the British way, it's not necessarily a lack of confidence - it's a type of self deprecation, to mock oneself and one's government, and one's country, to find humour in the extreme silliness of everything., and to wear our weaknesses as a badge of honor. I'd characterise it more as a display of weakness, openness and humour - in order to bridge the divides of the human experience. Nothing is more human than honest recognition and display of our own personal weaknesses - all while poking fun at them. Cynically you could look at it as an effective social manipulation, a subtle guilt-tripping tactic - to which your "stabbed heart" attests. However, I take the former view, it is done in good humour, at least in this instance. It's very un-american.

GetFisher

personally i would move but im just worried that one day im gonna be that guy whos like "sorry guys cant play with you because its not supported on linux 🤓"

DaJaCo (Dan)

Xbox is cooked - it's over, everything they do from this point on - is to transition their user base towards PC while minimizing collateral damage. They will call everything an Xbox and paint things black and green, but the brand damage will be massive, and the safest bet storefront will remain Steam. This is the beginning of their exit / becoming a publisher.

Joseph

Hey DF crew! Hardware unboxed released a video with benchmarks showing that the 9070XT is now faster than the 5070ti with the new drivers from AMD however RT and PT was not used in their benchmark can you guys make a video in regards to this matter please?

Centralperkin

We definitely need a “Ghost of Yōtei vs AC Shadows” showdown video to compare the games graphical prowess and see which one comes out victorious😜

BespokeEP

Did you think the game looked bad? lol Sony’s first party hit the point of diminishing returns last gen. Sucker Punch is 1/3 of the size as those other studios. Art style has a lot to do with it, prioritizing fine detail, lighting, and physics based things , draw distance … like didn’t you notice how far into the distance the wind affected things. And there is so much we don’t know, like how long bodies and limbs will persist on the ground, foot prints… the game looks incredible and was running at 60fps, not 30fps …. We still don’t know if 60fps is the fidelity mode and 120 is performance. You’re also judging a heavily compressed stream. Also if you played through a few months ago, I can only assume you played through on PS5 where Tsushima was upgraded, you should be comparing with base PS4 version.

Dani Ádám

I didnt said Yotei looks bad, just didnt saw lof of visual improvements. Tsushima still looking good cuz of the art design, but I expected more from Yotei in fidelity. Maybe they are doing what you wrote, we will see. Btw Tsushima's PS5 upgrade wasnt much in visuals if any, res bump and native in the place of the checkerboard I guess.

Douglas Fowler

I agree I wasn’t exactly blown away by what I’ve seen of Yotei so far. The games are beautiful. They just don’t technically wow me that much. Looking forward to getting lost in that game later this year.
