Hi everyone, Rich here with some pretty enormous, exciting news! We’ve just announced that Digital Foundry is now fully independent, having purchased IGN’s 50 percent stake in the company - a clean break and a huge opportunity. For us, this is one of the most important and exciting moments in the history of the channel. Going forward, it’s the team that fully defines the way forward - we’re free to grow, invest, work with the partners of our choosing and do much more. We finally feel we’re in the right place to finally realise our potential - and we’re inviting you to join us on this journey!

Of course, for some, it may not be immediately obvious that we have any real associations with IGN at all, so allow me to explain how we are where we are. Back in 2015, I pitched Gamer Network - then, pretty much the premiere independent games media company in the world - to bring Digital Foundry from the pages of Eurogamer to YouTube. A joint venture was born: I’d build the team and shape the content, while Gamer Network funded us and provided numerous background benefits. A few years later, Gamer Network was acquired by ReedPop - a division of Reed Exhibitions, a gigantic company more interested in GN’s events than its editorial. Last year, ReedPop sold Gamer Network’s digital properties to IGN. So, each time it was sold on, GN’s 50 percent stake in Digital Foundry changed hands - and there was little we could do about that. Tied to massive firms whose shareholding gave them influence over what we do, it’s not unfair to say that Gamer Network’s pioneering spirit was replaced with something quite different. Previous attempts to buy controlling shares in the business came to nothing - until now.

Fair play to IGN here, they offered to sell their stake in DF to me and the process was smooth overall. It’s not been a walk in the park though. IGN received fair market value for their shares, which means that for me - as an individual - the stakes are very high. I’ve spent more on buying back Digital Foundry shares than I have on my own house, so there is some degree of both excitement and anxiety in making this announcement. But the deal is for an amount considerably even higher than that, so I’m delighted to share that Gamer Network founder and OG DF investor Rupert Loman has stepped in to make this deal possible - and our objectives are agreed and aligned.

From now on, all aspects of DF are decided upon by DF. We answer to nobody but you, the audience. We are fully independent, we’re proud of that and we think it’s the future of quality games media. In the new DF Direct Special, we talk about the role of independent media and the possibilities we are pursuing - but how far we push, how ambitious we want to be… well, the sky’s the limit, but support from our fantastic community backing an independent DF will make a world of difference. We’re committed to sharing this journey with all Supporters and we’re eager for your feedback - please let us know what you think in the invitingly open comments box below.

Congratulations team DF on making this dream a reality. It's clear you all work hard doing a job that you love. It's clear that you think hard about the way you present content in a way that's fair to creators and informative for your audience. It's also clear you love your audience. Keep doing what you're doing - I rely on your content each week in a way similar to the companionship of a friendship.

Amazing news! Here to support - already at the highest tier. Will you be updating Patreon tiers?

Polyh3dron

Great news. Proud to remain a Patreon supporter.

Nick

Congrats!

EvilRacer329

Whoa, this is mega news! I can only imagine how scary/exciting this must be! But I'm curious; what drove this? Does this mean that IGN were trying to influence or limit DF in some way? Or were you simply worried that it might change hands again and that you'd end up having to fight with a part-owner who did start making demands on your editorial integrity? Either way, I'm proud and happy to be a DF supporter!

Austin

Congratulations gents! Excited to see where you take us in the future and I'm on board for the ride

MarcusAuralius

Congratulations Rich and the rest of the DF Crew! I love seeing creators owning their own content. With Richard now head of HR, will he be leading the team-building activities or workplace harassment trainings?

Dave Brown

Serious comment - this is great news and I want to celebrate, so it'd be great to have these options: 1) More Patreon 'tier' options to provide > $15/mo support 2) Alternative options for direct support i.e. donations or a 'tip jar' This is an exciting time, and now that we're entering this era of uncertainty (together) I want to do what I can to help DF get through the early months.

Brandon Reno

Congrats and best of luck gentlemen. Exciting times ahead!

Ahmed Alrashed

Congratulations! 🎊🎈🎉 I wish you guys a prosperous future and success.

Dave Brown

Re: the website question, please consider reaching out to Jasper Wang of Defector.com He was instrumental in getting that business stood up as an independent entity (all of the writers were formerly of Deadspin) - including a functional subscription-only blog. Defector (and Jasper) have been open about providing free consultation to other journalism outfits as they transition into independence.

Dissecta

Wow! Congratulations and wishing all the best!

beer chugger 209

Congratulations!!!. Been following since the post on eurogamer during the PS3 days.

Allan Lindqvist

Awesome news, maybe it would be best to keep Patreon only but I'd love to know about some of the stuff that you were not able to do before or things that corporate shut down 🙂

Callum Jones

Congrats guys, excited for the future of DF :)

39digits

Congrats to the team! This is such exciting news and I cannot wait to see what a fully armed and operational Digital Foundry will unleash onto Endor.

RAVE_DAM0S

I think it's high time to level up my support of DF. So excited for you folks! 🎉👋☝️

Chris Gardner

This is great news, but the part about "Gamer Network founder and OG DF investor Rupert Loman has stepped in to make this deal possible" makes me question how much they own DF. Surely they got some shares?

Adnan Sheikh

Congratulations exclamation point!

ConcreteLlama

Wow that's fantastic! Congratulations!

Ed

Excellent news and huge congrats to all <3 I'm curious if DF articles will still appear on Eurogamer. Also it's probably a reflection on how good the DF team is, but at no point ever have I sensed anything is being communicated in anything other than an honest way. Interested to know if or what pressure was ever applied that would be contrary to those ideals :)

Nikhil Verma

Yes! Just became a patreon and I love supporting independent outlets. Looking forward to what you get up to in the coming days

digitalfoundry

Hi Ed - DF articles will no longer appear on Eurogamer. It's part of our clean break with IGN which is why we want to build our own website. There's never been any editorial pressure from any of our prior partners - it's generally not done in the games media business. But planning, strategy etc - clearly shareholders will have input into that. From now on, we have full control over this which is very exciting!

TrapLord

Does anyone know how to access the discord? I can’t seem to find it in the patreon app on iPhone.

Paul Chambers

Just re-subbed. Exciting times for the Foundrymen.

Someguyperson

Great news! I saw the layoffs at IGN and I was going to ask you guys a question about it today, but this just about clears it all up.

Simon Eade

Good for you Rich et al

Woody Chang

Congrats! I'm all for expanding, especially getting more DF Retro and PC content! Not that I don't watch the console stuff :) DF Retro podcast sounds like a great idea!

Wilbert

This is awesome! Listening to you lads and enjoying the great work that you do has been part of my everyday life for many years. So happy to see this opportunity for you and interested to see where it will take you. Happy to keep supporting you on your journey. Keep doing what you have amazingly done!

BespokeEP

Can we get a Pizza ASMR Patreon tier?

Clay R.

Sincerest congratulations to everyone on the team! This is great news in an industry that has been filled with so much difficulty and bleakness. I hope one takeaway for the team will be to continue to pursue content that excites each of you. Your passions show through in the work and as supporters we trust that whatever helps motivate and energize the DF crew is ultimately what is best for the channel and all of us as enjoyers of your work. Wishing you all the best!

Dragon Reborn

Congratulations Rich and the entire DF crew. This is genuinely exciting, major news. Full support to a great future for DF. I love your content and more importantly love the team.

Dragon Reborn

Can I ask whether Will (who did much of the Eurogamer site content) is still part of DF?

Ed

Thanks that makes sense. Looking forward to a DF Retro Master System deep dive at some stage then ;)

GrahamM

Congratulations and good luck for the future

James McNab

Congrats guys. You chaps deserve every success and you are without doubt one of the most genuine and respected sources when it comes to this kind of work.

Azralex

Awesome, Congratulations!

Marcelo Vale

Treefinngers

Congratulations guys! I am a PC gamer, and have 6 yrs of video production, editing, and VFX experience. My other passion is music, so I have been using audio recording/editing software even longer (since 2006).. I was going to go into film but after Highschool I had a kid at 18 and had to start working.. ended up being a Chef and that's been my life since 2011. But I have long dreamed of returning to video production, so it has remained a passion, and hobby I do outside of work along with Gaming and music. I'd love to share some of my work and offer any help editing, or whatever I could do to help! Been watching since 2015 love to see you all thriving ✌🏻♥️

Joel

Congratulations! Looking forward to DF unleashed!

Philipp Comans

Tamerator

Congratulations!!! Been a member for 4 years and upgraded today to the highest tier. So excited for you guys!! 🤩

digitalfoundry

Will primarily worked on maintaining Digital Foundry's presence on Eurogamer, which IGN did not wish to continue - but Will continues to work on Eurogamer. But he is and always will be a cherished friend and colleague.

Igndependence Day

Tobias

Awesome, a new ‘bespoke’ DF supporter here. Keep on keeping on 🫡

Bigmanupstairs

Just upgraded my membership to the Retro tier. Great to know every cent is helping you guys grow.

El Barto

News like this make me really confident in the future of games media. The recent indepenencies of outlets like Giant Bomb, VGC or Remap, the push into something bigger from SkillUp and now you lot going down this route is a nice trend towards sustainability in games media. I'm looking forward to see how you'll develop DF into the future!

Derek Allan

So happy for you guys! I am happy to always watch your content which is very educational and positive for the most part! I think I will be upping my patreon on this news! I am very interested in the PC expansion part of the channel and I hope to see lots more games being reviewed on PC and compared with their console versions. Also I would like to see going back to revisit previous releases more often to see if updates have improved anything or if there are settings on the newer nvidia software to make things better for any of the outstanding issues. Thank you for all that you guys do!

ZeroSum

Congratulations everyone. Looking forward to the future.

Alex Iffland

Congratulations!!!!! I love Digital Foundry and each of your bespoke perspectives (DF humor very much included). I've had a ton of fun learning from you and I'm excited for all you'll do in the future, especially now that you're able to chase your principles and passions even more!

Peepmus

This news was the incentive that I needed to finally sign-up and become a patreon. I hope that many others felt the same compulsion after hearing the news and I wish you all the very best for your future endeavours.

Luke

Congratulations, I have also now signed up to support the work you do. It's really about time I did as I've been following your content for a heck of a long time now!

Alexandre Havet

Hi ! A little late message but congrats for your independence ! I follow you since a little while, appreciate the quality of work and the fun you put in your videos. Long time thinking to join patreon, decided to take the plunge with this announcement to support the channel as it will now be more important than ever ! Wish you the best things for this channel, I know that fun, quality and passion will be there in any case. High five from France !

Gareth

Congratulations! Looking forward to more retro coverage. Some Evercade coverage would be ace, and maybe a Chris Sawyer (Transport Tycoon, Locomotion, Rollercoaster Tycoon) special would be amazing.

NotArealFrame

You are doing a phenomenally good job with unparalleled quality that is recognized as the benchmark across the net. You keep on doing what you feel is good, and you have absolutely nothing to fear.

Dan Inskeep

Congrats, you guys have the best game content anywhere! I'm glad I finally signed up a couple days ago after watching for so many years. Onward and upward!

CrispyNougat

I haven't liked your content as much since you left
