Hello there! It's Thursday, meaning we're planning for DF Direct Weekly #229, "taping" tomorrow morning. It'll be a recovered Rich, John and Alex at the mics with a range of discussion points on the docket.

First of all, Rich will be sharing his thoughts on the ROG Xbox Ally X and the non-X. It's a brave new world for Microsoft, but is it actually an Xbox? We'll also be tackling Tim Sweeney's comments on Unreal Engine 5 "optimisation" and targeting lower performing platforms. Alex is enthused by Unreal Engine Megalights and idTech SIGGRAPH presentations and will be talking about those, while Nvidia's GB10 processor may well be hinting heavily at its upcoming ARM laptop aspirations.

But - of course - it's DF Direct Weekly and the show wouldn't be the same without you. Feel free to suggest your own topics for inclusion and your questions for the team!

No question but taking down the archive is a huge bummer

Sony have been very careful to release their first party games only on PC later on, not bringing many to other consoles. Do you think if these new rumoured steam machines become a reality, Sony will change direction, as this will in effect let their games be played on another (ostensibly) home console?

Peter

Was going to ask about Tim Sweeney comment, glad to see you are covering

ConcreteLlama

As time passes, more and more people are getting VRR displays. How much longer do you think framerate testing on fixed refresh displays will be relevant or will it always be relevant? I recall you saying you were working on some solution for VRR capture/analysis and just wondered where it was at and if, going forward, you will benchmark with that or continue to work primarily with fixed refresh rates?

Hi DF crew, for Rich: any interest in checking out the MSI Claw 8 AI+? (yes that's really what it's called, rolls right off the tongue right?) I've seen some reporting that the Intel 258V APU in it has gotten better performance over time with updates to match and even exceed what a Z1 Extreme can do. It's also the only SOC in a Windows gaming handheld at the moment with the RAM on the compute package which proves beneficial for memory bandwidth and efficiency.

CrispyNougat

Hello. My question is in regards to the upgraded version of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The game runs at 30fps prep upgrade but I never really minded because the responsiveness of the action on screen felt similar to a 60fps game. If all 30fps games felt as responsive as this I wouldn't mind them at all. What are your thoughts?

Buzz Bee Spoke

Digital foundation. What are some ways the next generation of consoles can improve outiside of graphics? Or whens the last time you think a technological leap has improved videogames gameplay wise? SSDs are probably the easy answer heare.

Chhem

Not really a question for the show but now that Loseless scaling works on steamOS, has DF considered doing a video on that? Ways to possibly extend the life of your steam deck

CrashOverride

Hello everyone! Nice to hear on the last Direct that we're on the same page on Moore's Law being effectively dead for the purposes of generational gains in chip power, will we start to see more experimentation regarding ASIC blocks on GPUs? Current Nvidia chips are well-known and regarded for their ray-tracing and tensor cores, and all chip manufacturers have specialized media encoding blocks to boost the speed of video encode and decode. Is there more room on the silicon for such optimizations? What of AMDs chiplet strategy? Would love to know everybody's thoughts! (yes, same question; still hoping for an answer)

Greg Brown

Next-gen is coming up fast, and will likely offer performance-boosted back-compatibility like this generation. Is there anything game devs should be doing now to future-proof their games, such as adding toggles to unlock the frame-rate or widen the DRS window? Alex, I’m assuming that any back-compat-mode games would be stuck in the same VRAM budget, so are there any PC-style options that wouldn’t swell that? ( LOD changes, texture, etc would probably be out.)

Justin Chace

Hi DF Team, How feasible would it be for Microsoft to build a universal anti-cheat into Windows to avoid some of the publisher specific solutions we have today?

The Phantomnaut

Last week, AMD accidentally released the source code to FSR 4, with the hint of trying to work on last gen RDNA hardware. Given its competitive results, should AMD turn it open source like past iterations? There are probably Nvidia users (including me) going Team Red this time around but are not able to reap the benefits of FSR 4 due to relatively low game adoption. Sure Optiscaler exists but wouldn’t it be easier if they allowed developers easily implement it, especially for games with anti-cheat?

Hello my Bespoke Brothers! I've heard a little more in the media regarding Sony's rumoured PS6 handheld this week. I think we can all agree it's unlikely this machine (if real) will feature a bluray drive. In which case, am I being foolish continuing to buy physical for my PS5? Will my digital brethren be advantaged by a truly backwards compatible collection thats the envy of luddites such as myself. What's the likelihood that Sony might offer some way of bringing one's physical library forward? Can you hypothesise how this might be implemented? Cheers, Lewis

Spodlude

Hey DF, I'm a parent of young children, I think many gamers fit this category these days as we've grown up with and held onto the medium. For those of you who are or have been parents of young children, what are things you find frustrating in modern games that dont respect parents' needs? Mine are games that dont allow a true pause feature e.g diablo 4, or games that dont allow you to pause cut scenes. Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers, Lewis

Spodlude

Hello, Richard I hope you're feeling bette. As a ROG ally x owner one of my biggest frustrations is the lack of reliable sleep functionality. I hear the new rog xbox ally continues this omission. Is Microsoft rushing this product when it lacks basic features in this regard? I understand it with the original rog which is just a handheld PC, but to attach the xbox name to a product the lacks such a basic feature seems to me as though it could tarnish the brand. What are your thoughts on sleep wake? Cheers

TMoney58

Gentlemen! Was the Asus 540hz 1440p OLED display as fantastic as the specs would lead us to believe?

(Don’t be a) Richard

Hope you’re feeling well Rich. Has the new Hitman World of Assassination Switch 2 patch to add a capped framerate improved the title?

Chris Gardner

Greetings gents! Regarding the ROG Xbox Ally, it seems steaming is going to be the way to go for console titles. How far away do you think is local emulation of consoles? Surely the X model could emulate Xbox 360 games at the very least.

RagingWhisky

This is actually being looked at on MS side this moment. With Microsoft removing third party access to the Kernel level in upcoming Windows updates (the CrowdStrike incident being a wakeup call) - will impact Anti-Cheat providers, Anti-Virus companies and any other platform that needs UID0 command.

Critically Wild

Oliver recently expressed his dismay at the impact getting good recordings in BF6 had on his K/D ratio. Perhaps the DF crew should recruit a bodyguard clan for competitive games to protect you few who give up so much, so a great many can have their frametime graphs? Thank you for your service.

(Don’t be a) Richard

Wonder how that might impact support for Steam OS given anti cheat can prevent games being supported on the OS.

TheMightyEthan

Hey DF! Did you see the comment from Sweeney that UE5's performance problems are mainly just developers failing to optimize their games, and not the engine's fault? What do y'all think, are the problems due to UE itself, or is it just those damn "lazy devs" like Sweeney suggests? Thanks as always!

Peter

Hi DF Gents! With Nightdives continued run of fantastic remasters I find myself wondering what game I would love for them to tackle next. I settled on the original Dues Ex. What are your dream remasters/remakes?

Randy Abarca

Hello crew! When it comes to Advance Shader Delivery, do you think it will also address legacy content? Games like Batman Arkham series or even Final Fantasy 15 are still a stuttery mess on Windows while playing perfectly fine on Linux due to Valve's Fossilize.

James

Good day gents. With Microsoft Windows potentilly becoming more of a closed platform over time, are they moving consoles in to the PC space, and also moving PC's closer to the console space?

Snorlax cat

now that we are in the age where the coalition had brought UE3 to ps5, would you like Arkham knight enhanced for current gen? I bet rocksteady could use the money after that suicide game I mean Suicide squad game

Pol Kallamata

While I find the concept of a Steam OS powered living room console appealing, the rumored new Steam machine specs appear somewhat underwhelming. Do you believe that when such a machine is revealed in the near future, it will be paired with the announcement of a broader release of Steam OS that let's enthusiasts build their own box with their desired specifications?

Andre Mauricio Zelak

Hello DF, do you think next gen engines will be more memory hunger to add broader AI features? In a PC, will it impact more the CPU RAM or the VRAM?

The Portugeezer

Hello friends, a couple of questions, how will the Xbox ROG Ally and Xbox ROG Ally X (with their Z2-series processors and Xbox-optimized Windows features) stack up against the ROG Ally X and Steam Deck in real-world gaming performance? Is it a worthy upgrade if own one of these handhelds? Also given the prices of the Xbox ROG Ally models, how do they compare value-wise to the ROG Ally X and Steam Deck, and when will the Xbox-optimized Windows interface arrive on other handhelds? Thank you!

speedlemur

Dear frametime sommeliers - is there a recommended setup for frame limiting while using frame generation? In the absense of a well-implemented in-game limiter, I have struggled to get decent frametime pacing out of external limiters like Special K and NVCP. If you have had better luck, please share your success examples or recommended setup.

Daniel Becker

Hello DF gents. I’m eager to hear your thoughts on devs using such high quality assets that they have to force a LOD pop right in front of the player while moving through the world. This seems like a fundamental mistake in game making. If you have to update LOD so close to the player with a higher quality asset, wouldn’t it be better to just use a lower quality asset that doesn’t require that close up LOD transition, as it would be less distracting to the player? Forza Horizon 5’s performance mode is the poster child for this issue IMO.

Marcus

Hello, foundry friends! The ever unpredictable Black Myth Wukong came out on Xbox adding to the old jumble of different modes that game runs at. 45 FPS targets and frame generation from 30 to 60 FPS comes to mind. It seems like the choices are somewhat more sound this time perhaps barring the removal of lumen in the performance mode on Xbox. Why do you think the original PlayStation version has such weird modes? Is it just that these developers aren’t used to making games or is there a good reason for the using frame generation from 30 FPS something that AMD definitely does not recommend or for the 45 FPS target? Hope you have a great week.

Leftisthominid

I hope you are feeling better Rich. I have kind of out of date on DF Direct for the last couple months, but I have been wondering, has Alex gotten a Switch 2 yet?

Luke

Hey Rich, so Ive been listening to a German retro gaming podcast and they have been telling that, back in the glorious 2000s, you have built some devices (and here I don't remember completely) to capture screenshots for console games or smt? Could you elaborate how this came to be and what other superhero work you've done back in the day? Cheers!

Leftisthominid

I have an aging RTX3080 that I use for gaming and casual AI image generation (Flux, SDXL, etc.), so I have been eyeing the 5070 Ti. Is now the time to upgrade? Or are Super shenanigans on the horizon? Basically, I want a lot of VRAM - not just for games - but RTX 5080/+ are out of the price range.

Leftisthominid

How you are all doing in the here and now?

Leftisthominid

DF Directors have had various changes in backgrounds for the video backgrounds. Ollie once was inside a purple GameCube while he was on DF Directs. What is the most significant change in recording location for a DF Director (assuming it was not Ollie leaving the GameCube)?

Leftisthominid

I know Will have left DF, but I will still ask, how is he doing? Even though he stuck with IGN, will he still ever return to DF Direct?

Leftisthominid

What it is the term for people on DF Direct? (as in Rich, Alex, John, Ollie, Tom, etc.) DF Directors?

Michael Kirk

Greetings most cromulant foundry workers and congrats on your new found freedom. A question aimed mostly at retro fan John. With the recent completion of the FPGA powered ZX Spectrum Next Kickstarter, what are his thoughts on modern FPGA based recreations and often enhanced versions of retro machines? I'm thinking machines like the Next, the C64 Ultimate and Analog's consoles?

AfreemTheDream

Greetings, Foundrymen! If what you do now is Digital Foundry, what would Analog Foundry be? Side note: I absolutely crack up every time you guys pronounce R.O.G. as RRRRROGG

kingpenumbra

Hey gang, I hope that Rich feels recovered and is enjoying a bespoke recovery plan from his doctors. With relevance to that is it fun navigating the complexities of running a multinational organization that (presumably) needs to insure its members?

(Don’t be a) Richard

Did you consider making the high quality video downloads a perk of the higher Patreon tiers, which could help cover the bandwidth cost. While limiting the audience isn’t ideal I’m sure, it might be a way to still provide the content to the fans that really want it.

Aaron Udy

The first Digital Foundry After Dark podcast should answer your questions!

Mario Rosa

Hello, gentlemen. With the Xbox Series port of Black Myth: Wukong being quite different from the PS5 version, I was reminded of previous generations in which we saw even greater differences between ports due to different architectures and vastly different capabilities. Sometimes, ports were entirely different games! My question is: from a technical perspective, do you miss seeing games focus on what their systems do best or do you prefer ports to be as consistent as possible? I personally prefer consistency as I feel that is more consumer friendly but I can't deny some ports from the past. are quite fascinating to look at.

Darryl Stewart

Hi Team, Assuming that in 1,000 years the PC gaming community won’t still be locked in to the x86 CPU architecture licensing duopoly, what do you imagine would be the necessary conditions for ARM chips (or an alternative) to overtake x86 as the dominant architecture for PC gaming CPUs? Would this be a better world?

Abhi

Is ps6 the first gen where a key spec point isn’t at least 2x a previous gen, excluding mid gen upgrades? Is there a chance ps6 has 896 gb/s memory bandwidth? 32gb of ram seems unlikely as well.

Snorlax cat

do you consider that up to 5.5 UE5 stands for unpleasant engine 5?

itinerary

‘ello gentlemen! new supporter here :D while the technical capabilities of modern handhelds (switch, steam deck) are amazing, and game gear freaks truly have been vindicated, what do you think the future is for smaller handhelds? are we doomed emulating old games on hacked 3dses, android handhelds, and analogue fpgas forever? Not a bad fate, but i yearn for more.

FrametimeSommelier

Hi Gents, with recent RDNA 5 leaks suggesting AMD is finally preparing a serious high-end GPU push in late 2026/early 2027, potentially targeting RTX 6090-class performance, do you think we're heading toward a more competitive landscape in the enthusiast segment? In the current gen, AMD largely ceded the top tier, while Nvidia's Blackwell felt like a minimal effort to maintain dominance rather than push boundaries. But AMD seems to be closing the gap on software and AI features. Do you think Nvidia will be forced to respond with meaningful performance and VRAM improvements rather than relying on DLSS feature marketing? And if AMD delivers a feature-rich, high-performance RDNA 5 lineup, could we finally see the kind of competition that will bring down pricing and pressure innovation across the board?

Mr Bespoke

HI DF Crew!! Just wondering this channel being all about analytics, performance and load times got me wondering how long does it take you to download/upload/transfer nearly a decades worth of content. Especially when it comes down to internet bandwidth? Thanks and keep out the Awesome work!!

FrametimeSommelier

I know you're all incredible busy, but I wanted to ask about the future of DF Indirect. If I'm remembering correctly, we got two episodes last year. Do you see DF Indirect returning at some point. Maybe as a quarterly feature with a bit more room for in-depth analysis and off-the-cuff exploration of topics that don't quite fit the regular DF Direct format?

rbs

Hi gents ! With those quite low specs, what would you think of a tiny Steam Box designed to be easily transportable and headless (basic setup display) ? Could be dropped anywhere, plugged to any source of power, and beam his steam to a nearby device, wired or wireless over dedicated ad-hoc Wifi. Would also work for VR as they demonstrated with Meta Quests.

FrametimeSommelier

Why is setting up a VRR capable monitor still treated like arcane knowledge? I'd wager that 75%, maybe more, of gamers with G-Sync compatible VRR monitors and Nvidia GPUs aren't activating the feature correctly. Either they don't realize they need to manually enable it in the Nvidia Control Panel, or they miss the crucial compatibility checkbox entirely. I've had people swear the VRR OLEDs show zero flicker, only to discover they've been running everything in V-Sync mode for months. It's wild how many setups experiences are sabotaged by a single overlooked toggle. How is the average non-enthusiast PC gamer supposed to know?

BespokeEP

Absolutely!! If you watch the latest by Moore's Law is Dead video on the PS6 handheld, towards the end of the the video he spoke with some Devs and what they are hoping next gen will require and RAM is definitely the biggest need

Josh Miles

Is it still worth investing in an AM5 platform? Currently rocking a 5700x3d and 7800xt. Will be looking to upgrade in the next year, but it kind of feels like I've missed the boat for AM5. At this point, is it worth just waiting for AM6?

BespokeEP

Tom from MLiD made a great point about why you won't see this "legally" on a windows based handheld. If the dev doesn't agree to play anywhere (which is essentially asking the dev to give every Xbox owner the PC version as well with just one purchase). Because the ROG is a windows based PC. If the next gen Xbox runs Windows, it will have the exact same issue. You purchased an Xbox license, not windows, and those are different. If a dev can sell you the game twice, they will, and that is not being greedy. Most game licenses enable you to play the game on the platform you purchased it on. Microsoft trying to normalize a single purchase to play a game on every platform is awful for the industry and a lot of companies will close if forced to do so. Xbox being owned by the richest company in the world is dangerously positioned... Xbox could lose $10-20 billion every year and it would hardly effect MS. Microsoft makes over $100b in profit every year.

Travesty Stutter

To the Esteemed Gentlemen and Scholars of the Digital Foundry, It seems that before long, Xbox console and PC will be a unified thing from the hardware (and hopefully also software) perspective. If so, it calls into question the pricing of Xbkx's all-important Game(s) Pass. Currently, PC players enjoy discounted pricing on full fat Game(s) Pass compared to the console players. Do you expect Microsoft to unify the pricing model? If so, will the PC players end up paying more, or (in a worldwide first for corporate conduct) will the console players enjoy a new lower price for the service?

BespokeEP

If you watched "the Road to PS5". I think we can finally expect to see those less than 1 sec load times that Cerny wanted for this gen...

Spodlude

Please can you bring attention to / check a VRR bug for gears on ps5 pro. Playing at 120hz mode it loses vrr if you go back to the PlayStation home then back into the game. Makes the image look awful.

RealVideogameStore

Rich will you consider more general games news and updates via a new Digital Foundry web portal? One would imagine you wouldn't be short of offers for assistance on such a scaled up project. Unless you have a none competition clause with your old house mates.

Julian Shniter

Welcome back Rich! I have recently been working on a VR app and it got me thinking it has been quite a while since we last heard about John's VR odyssey. So John, whatcha been gaming on VR wise recently?

Robert Brown

Greetings Do you think bugs and glitches are getting less uniform across different players? I assumed that if two people have the same model of console. They will get exactly the same performance and encounter the same bugs. But in the current generation some people seem to be reporting problems whilst others say it runs fine on their system. In the latest gear video HDR appear to be broken on one Xbox without a widespread problem. Have you noticed this kind of thing happening more often in the current generation?

Deadeyes

Have you considered releasing DF video content as torrents? Why not have the link to the torrent in addition to the direct download link on your site? I know myself and many others would be happy to seed it, and this could significantly reduce your bandwidth needs. Is there a major downside I've not considered? Thanks and keep up the good work.

Deadeyes

You'll be waiting a long time... AM6 is like 3-4 years away at least. Zen 6 and Zen 7 are going to be on AM5.

Ryan Peters

Now that Microsoft is rolling out a fix for the #StutterStruggle by shipping compiled shaders, exactly how much of the #StutterStruggle would you say is Microsoft's fault in the first place? Previously with DirectX 11 and earlier, shader compilation was hardly noticeable in many titles, but in modern games, doing that optimization work yourself is often error-prone or incomplete as you've noticed over the years. As thankful as I am for Microsoft finally stepping in, I can't help but wonder if they could have done something much sooner before Valve embarrassed them on their own turf with SteamOS.

NobleHeroine

If the specs for Sony's purported handheld console are accurate, what do you think the odds are we see a repeat of the PS Vita, or, more favorably, the PSP? A portable console that's too powerful for its own good? Part of the PS vita's struggle was that it requires similar levels of developer investment as home console games, but rarely saw the neccesary developer interest--or, perhaps more accurately, publisher interest. While I have no doubt the psp portal, or whatever name they give it, will be an impressive piece of kit, it won't have the inherent advantages of the Switch, in being the only console first party teams develop for. Could this cause long term problems? Or has development and the market shifted enough to allow it to avoid the PS vita's fate?

Deadeyes

Super series is pretty much confirmed coming and with 50% more VRAM. No telling what street pricing will be though, and IIRC it's only 5070 and up getting refreshed.

Deadeyes

Almost definitely not. Fossilize is much more automated. This sounds like something that would be set up manually for each game. I'm so jealous of fossilize as a Windows user.

10 Watts Raytracing

Hi gents, so this duo of ROOOOOG Xbox Ally (X) adds 2 more references to the explosion of the handheld market. Does that mean we can expect a lot of AAA developers to maintain fitting quality settings on the long term for these constrained devices ? Does that mean the Switch 2 will remain a viable platform longer than Switch 1 did ? (Handheld PCs were such a niche when switch 1 released) Does that mean that even PC games won't be able to assume path-tracing capable hardware for the next few GPU generations, just to accommodate the market share of Z1 extremes and similarly performing APUs? Cheers!

DaJaCo (Dan)

I seem to remember it happened when i (and others) asked a few too many hard questions / about patents, and they felt there was a role for doing special in depth videos occasionally. We'll have to ask some harder ones!

Alan

Hi guys, There are so many issues with UE5, and yet more and more developers are switching to it. I suppose it's easier if everyone uses the same engine, as changing jobs due to all the layoffs and having to learn a different engine is time-consuming. What are your thoughts on the best engine currently?

Statistical Barista

Hey DF Crew, What do you think is the future of physical games with hybrid consoles on the horizon for both sets of hardware manufacturers? A portable hybrid console clearly cannot play physical discs. Is the future game cards? It is hard for me to see a future with more hybrid or portable systems that doesn't result in the lack of physical discs. Would it really be that awful if Sony made a keycard that worked on its console and portable and then reduces the added cost of a disc drive?

DaJaCo (Dan)

Happy 'Sennight' Sirs! This week it emerged that the next Playstation handheld will mimic the Switch 2 by having both a handheld and docked mode with roughly a 38% GPU clock delta between modes. Assuming that Sony wants to avoid a "3 body problem" with PS6, PSP (handheld), and PSP (docked) performance targets creating a "development trifecta of doom".. They could avoid some of the pain in a couple of obvious ways, firstly they could make the portable and docked targets closely analogous to PS5 and PS5 Pro.. or PS5 "Power Saver", and PS5.. OR; they could use the extra docked horsepower for a fairly hands-off system-level upscaling or frame-gen boost.. to 'automate' the docked mode. What sort of strategy do you think they are most likely to employ in order to minimise or reduce the development burden, or do you think they'll just embrace 3 target optimisation, (go nuts) and even launch a "PS-Not-P" (i.e. a permanent docked mode version of the portable chip) as a budget console?

TalonStryk

With Digital Foundry now independent, are we going to see some additional Patreon tiers? May I suggest a higher tier called “What’s in the box, Rich?”, giving access to a monthly stream or recorded Lets play, where Audi sends Rich terrible games in the mail, and Rich must play them? John and Audi to provide commentary / heckling? It would be like Mystery Science Theater 3000 meets DF Retro.

Jonathan Hamilton

Any impressions of the new No Man's Sky update on PS5 Pro, particularly in VR mode?

Jiminy the 26th

Good morning, afternoon, or night. I’ll keep this one short and simple. Is the Xbox Ally interesting? Is this Xbox “dipping their toes” rather than jumping into the pool? Hope Richard GotBetter!

shedi1982

Happy independence day gents!! Do any of you think that it's time to stop worrying about how great games can look and focus on how great they can run? Because it seems like there is such a focus on realism with rt everything that it comes at a cost to fps (especially on consoles) that games are being shipped in a poor shape

Pulec

Zen 6 CPU and RDNA 5 GPU in handheld, if the leaks are to be believed? That will be in 2027 soonest IMHO. PS Vita is ARM CPU so I can't imagine the development headache when making PS4 title for x86_64 and having to redo it for ARM. With PS6 and this new handheld it will be both x86_64, afaik practically same APU just lower TDP, so for devs it come could down just optimizing details in most cases, controls anything else to make it feasible for handheld and done.

digitalfoundry

Is that what you want from Digital Foundry? There are no non-competes with Gamer Network or IGN that I am aware of.

digitalfoundry

We're working on solutions to get it accessible, perhaps on the Internet Archive.

Tim

Hey DF team! With DF going independent, I finally had a good reason to create a Patreon account. Apologies that it took me so long! Thank you for the many hours of quality content and entertainment. My question is this: With Microsoft changing strategy for their next generation of consoles, what do you think their pricing model will be? Will they still subsidize consoles and recoup this through game prices? Or could we see more expensive consoles, but in turn game prices that are more in line with their PC counterparts?

Ian

Morning DF. As an in their 40’s dad I have found the switch 2 has rekindled a lot of my gaming passion that was dwindling with the other consoles and PC. With ports of some big games at gamescom like Elden Ring and Borderlands 4 reportedly (and by yourselves too) not in good shape - is this something that can be smoothed out as the development environment matures or are these sorts of open world titles hitting say a memory bandwidth or cpu limit on the switch 2 meaning they aren’t a good fit for it ever?

RealVideogameStore

As I stand in the store looking at a copy of Mean Machines Sega Complete Review Guide Volume 1, I think yes, yes they would be a good idea. All of the current games sites have turned into a homogenised soup. I think Eurogamer has passed its best. The new editor put on a good show with regards to nothing changing, and then they posted a guide as to where the SD card slot is on a Switch 2. (Dear lord!) It would be great to have somewhere that appreciates what their audience is, and what they want. Basically just sensible people having sensible conversations. And also a place where people with different experiences and backgrounds can exchange ideas.

Joseph Scott

Hi guys! Hope all is well! In the wake of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, a lot of fans have noticed certain titles they really wanted didn’t make it in. Digital Eclipse has already mentioned that some omissions, like Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Genesis, were due to licensing constraints, they simply weren’t granted permission. Others, like Mortal Kombat Gold, are understandable since a commercial-grade Dreamcast emulator isn’t available to them. From your perspective and experience, what are some of the bigger factors behind these omissions? I’m thinking about things like licensing hurdles, emulator tech limitations, publisher priorities, or even the legal/technical overhead of including multiple versions of the “same” game across platforms. I know a lot of people are asking about the PS2-era entries, but since that wasn’t really the scope of this collection, I’m mainly curious about why certain “classic-era” games didn’t make it.

Bruce Leckenby

Hi guys, long time watcher and new member of the new independent DF supporter crew. I’m a recovering achievement/trophy addict. Do you have any insights or thoughts on why Nintendo seems to be the only platform without a trophy system?

Pelicanman

Hello DF Crew, I hope you’re still basking in the glorious light of independence. Have you ever thought about making a PC gaming best practices/mythbuster video? It seems like there’s a million answers online about the best settings/configuration to have for PC gaming, but they often seem dubious or contradictory. What are your “must-do” settings?
