Hi everyone, it's been almost a month now since we announced that Digital Foundry is now fully independent. Since then, a lot has been happening behind the scenes - but suffice to say it's been a lot more complicated setting up a new business than previously envisaged bearing in mind how deeply enmeshed Digital Foundry was within Gamer Network/IGN.

How can a small UK-based limited company employee overseas staff? It's not as easy as you might think! Who's going to track the accounts? How much do we owe the UK tax authorities and indeed the excellent lawyers who made this deal possible? What happens to a YouTube channel when it leaves a multi-channel network? How do we transfer the DF Direct Weekly podcast out of IGN's network? How much will the 50TB of data consumed when we announced the closure of the digitalfoundry.net website actually cost? What does the cashflow situation actually look like bearing in mind all of the above?

Logistics have been quite scary but we think we're through the worst of it now with just a couple more jobs to complete before the process finally completes. We're now at the point where we can start to think more clearly about the future and the first order of business is to understand more about the audience - who you are, how you game, what hardware you use and crucially, what you think about some of the new things we want to do with Digital Foundry - like our own website, for example, and other ways to get our work to a wider audience.

With all of that in mind, we've put together this audience survey. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to complete and I'd deeply apprecaite it if you could give it a look. Click through via this link: http://bit.ly/4pc8L9V

Have a great weekend!

Seems one of the columns, the “Technology Deep Dives in Rank your interest level for each of these Digital Foundry content types” has a validation bug. Anything selected within it and after always triggers a duplicated selection validation message for me even when clearing and reloading the form.

The survey doesn’t allow me to advance to the next page, because I may only click one value per statement – which I did. It shows this for every question box.

Mr Fujisawa

you can't have more than one selection in the same column. so basically you have to rate them all from 1 to 8, you cant have 2 with the same number.

Mr Fujisawa

Thanks Rich. Was hard rating so many things I like, hopefully it's useful doing it that way. Gave some recommendations I thought would be pretty good, but overall I just want the team doing what they love, and that translates to the content being good.

LordRelix

Well then… guess I didn’t wake up that smart this morning 😂

Hi there, thank you for involving your supporters! I am having issues with the survey though - mainly because it doesn't let me choose the same rating for multiple options in those questions where you can give a 1-7 or 1-8 score. Also: some scores can't be chosen at all? I'm on mobile, if this helps...

Chris Gardner

Ok, I totally screwed this up (as I think others did). Apparently 1 means “best” and 5, 7 and 8 means “worst” in respective questions. This is backwards from most surveys. I hope if I submit it again, it overwrites my previous response.

Chris Gardner

You have to rank them. You can’t have two rows with a value of 1 for example. It’s a little unclear.

Chris Gardner

It’s a ranking. You can’t give multiple rows the same score. It’s a little unclear.

Ian

Yeah that’s not an optimal survey - if you want some advice from someone who does this for a living (free advice) shout. Short advice would be - let people score rather than rank! Rank is bad for a few reasons - primarily ease of use but also because it removes any ability to rate things equally.

Gary Cormack

That threw me as well to start with , they’ve done it this way so they can have a comprehensive look at the most of least popular topic.

Gaboou

But why does it have to be a ranking? I am interested in multiple things on the same level... 😕

Stop the Spread

Please don't select more than one response per column… that’s what I get the moment I answer another survey question on the likert

I’d love to see more focus on HDR implementation when a game supports it. The videos don’t necessarily need to be rendered in HDR, but even just mentioning how HDR is handled would be great. For example, whether the game uses the PS5/Xbox HDR calibration menu, has in-game HDR adjustments, or suffers from issues like raised black levels. We really need to push more awareness of this tech, because it feels like many devs still handle it incorrectly, and a lot of players don’t fully understand how it actually works.

Hey DF team, just a quick note on the survey: I noticed that the rating scale uses 1 as the highest and 7 as the lowest. From my experience with scientific and public surveys, many people tend to assume the highest number (e.g. 7) means the highest preference, especially in quick multiple-choice formats. Might be worth clarifying or flipping the scale in future surveys to avoid any unintentional misratings. Just wanted to flag it in case! Appreciate all the work you’re doing and looking forward to what’s ahead! :) Keep up the great work and have a nice weekend!

As someone who takes a lot of opinion surveys, some feedback. When using a ranking format, please use the format of drag-and-drop to organize a list rather than radial buttons. It can be confusing to navigate otherwise.

Pedro Carvalho

For some reason I'm unable to submit my choices, it says " Please don't select more than one response per column".

Jonathan Hamilton

Glad I read these comments, because I realized I had filled mine out opposite how I intended!

Cullen Delmore

You made an interactive thing that requires the ability and intent to read the directions. My condolences. Having to rank things really made me think about what I would want to prioritize in DF content if I couldn't have it all. I think it was a very good idea, though it is unfortunate that it has caused some confusion. I hope you still get some usable data.

Myles C. Maxfield

I think there’s a typo “expended” => “expanded”

Ed Prats

absolutely! i never seen a survey that used inverted scale (i am in the US)

Niels de Rijk

I don’t understand why I need to rate every content type differently? For example, why can’t I like Retro coverage as much as anything else?

Niels de Rijk

And highest to lowest on a scale from 1 to 7 is rather confusing. 😂 You won’t get any reliable results with this.

Wrekh

Agreed, For me PC optimisation guides, deep dives and game reviews are as interesting, but I had to pick and choose and that was not easy.

TheBrainninja

How do I game, you ask? Poorly, yet excessively. Thanks! [edit:] having now actually taken the survey, the “I watch the content but don’t want to support Digital Foundry” is the funniest possible option, like “hello yes, it is SPECIFICALLY out of spite, thanks for asking” lmao

BespokeEP

You rank each category from 1 to X. It was a little confusing. But if you allow people to select 1 for everything, it doesn't exactly help DF determine what the audience overall prefers

Remij

I literally clarified in the comment part of the survey that me putting different types of content lower than others does not mean I don't like said content.. I would rate everything mostly 1 and 2 lol.

BespokeEP

For people having trouble with the survey, in the rank from 1-X sections, you are putting each item in order of importance, not rating each item on a scale. Yes I know it's like deciding which child you like the least, but someone has to be last lol

David Einhorn

What matters to me is enthusiasm. Better you follow your interests than hunting for audience acceptance.

Bill de hÓra

I have to concur while also having to point out the force rank survey questions are well-formed. I get going for a force rank, but typically Likert type scales are what people know and they go from 1-lowest to N-highest even though best practice for force ranking says 1-highest (this a main reason I dislike force ranks—NPS style surveys are simply dominant and anything else means the user has cognitive load). In any case, interested to hear about the results and what you do with them.

Bill de hÓra

☝️this. Here for adding or emphasizing media that grows the channel and takes it in whatever direction DF sees fit, but quite seriously, DF is already the best game tech media outlet, and by some distance.

BespokeEP

Actually, this is the only way to get any reliable results. Most people will probably like all the content and would rate the majority of things a "1" .. how does that help them to decide what the audience likes best? Resources are extremely limited, and they need to know what they should be focusing their time on by figuring out what the majority of people want most. If the majority of people put the Retro podcast last, they likely won't do it. But if a ton of people have it as their number one or two. They will likely give it a go

StooMonster

In one of the question sections, there are eight questions and seven ranks, so one of them you have to have zero rank too.
