A meaty new episode of DF Direct Weekly kicks off with a Valve double-header - reaction to news that Steam Machine may be heading for PC pricing, plus news of Linux FSR 4 support via Proton... including old GPUs. Meanwhile, Angry Alex is back and he's measured just how bad Windows performance in AC Shadows is impacted by a rogue update. Red Dead Redemption 1 returns once again, Oliver has opinions on Horizon Steel Frontiers and let's just say that we really think you should check out Sektori.

Video downloads to follow and YouTube is still processing the video. So at this moment I can't actually access it.

RL

Awesome.

Oliver Mackenzie

It has now processed to 4K, sometimes YT takes a bit.

As someone who used their Alienware laptop daily about 5 years ago, I have a deep Steam library. I am very keen on the Steam Machine, and plan to place it alongside my XSX and PS5 Professional.

Quick point is that valve only distributes hardware through steam store and to buy a deck you had account requirements. So it’s unlikely that distribution model would bring lots of growth to the ecosystem. They’d need to hit retail for that. I still think £600 for base model £750 (note £) for 2tb. Maybe it will creep above those but think those prices are competitive with laptops and pre builts I could buy without being silly.

Ferdinand

I would pay for a df DVD called "How to transition from terrible operating systems to personal freedom with Alexander Battaglia"

I don’t suppose Alex or anyone could tell me if a steam machine would be worth getting if you have a 2080ti. 32 gigs ddr4 ram and an intel i78700k.

It is very irritating that Windows 11 makes a lot of tasks just a little bit harder to do than in Windows 10: I do a bit of Python scripting (for simulations) and Edit with Idle is now an extra click away under "More Options". Seems silly but it's grating on me. Surely with all this AI cack there's something to be said for organising menus and drop downs based on what a user is actually doing...

Also, Crackdown was an absolutely brilliant game. One of my favourites of that generation. Traversing the city, climbing buildings and picking up Orbs was so addictive. Skills for Kills agent. Shame the sequels didn't live up to the original game.

darn over 600 is not great for the steam machine :( esp with the specs

digitalfoundry

Rich can tell you at least on the memory and GPU front, your system is better - and has DLSS, which Steam Machine does not.

Magnumstache

Lovely, thanks. Unfortunately the issue is 90% on my work machine and our IT department control everything these days: I look back wistfully on when I had admin rights...
