UPDATE: This video has gone through a couple of revisions - thanks for feedback!

The complete Elden Ring package lands on Switch 2. Visually speaking we're getting a match for the last-gen PS4 release in core settings - though as a plus, Switch 2's frame-rate exceeds that older Sony release, while its resolution locks at the target 1080p more consistently. Comparisons against Series S are less flattering meanwhile. The lack of DLSS is also perhaps a missed opportunity, but on the whole Nintendo's handheld puts in a robust rendition of a true From Software classic.

I’m not very clear how it feels in handheld mode between the frame pacing issue, the unlocked frame rate and cap at 40 after this review or did I miss something? Does it run on 120Hz mode handheld and VRR is smoothing out things a little or not really?

AMH

Fantastic breakdown as usual, I’ve been enjoying this version quite a lot. Do you think the 40 fps cap has anything to do with input latency? I’ve seen some speculate about that. It would also be interesting to see how this compares to Steam deck and/or rog ally x

Wayne Smith

I'm pretty sure it does have DRS, even if it's not kicking in often? Head to the Ailing Village and the resolution appears to drop to xenoblade 2 on switch 1 levels. It's the only place I've seen it happen though.

Fromsoftware and bad frame pacing. Name a more iconic duo. You can't, can you? Lol

digitalfoundry

VRR isn't a factor for a game mostly running at 35fps.

Jean-Nicolas Costa

Probably should have phrased it better! I’m just curious how the switch 2 screen handles these low frame rates if the target and cap are 40fps in this game, does the screen run at 120fps with LFC engaged? Or did from soft implement some frame doubling? Or the console’s screen runs at 60Hz?

digitalfoundry

You know what? You're quite right. We're going to tweak for public release.

I don't think I can ever enjoy Elden Ring without Seamless Co-Op mod but wow that is an impressive port!

Thanks gents! Solid showing in context, but it is kind of baffling they didn’t leverage DLSS. I wonder why that is? Edit: Removed musing on bottlenecks, I don’t think it’s that after all

goregutz

I watched the original video. I'm not going to watch the video again for a few tweaks. What's new in this video?

Max Fletcher

I agree it feels quite smooth in handheld mode, if you had told me VRR with LFC was working I would have believed you.

Ornstein and Smough springs to mind, the point is stil very valid

Great answer actually 😂
