Soooo... here's the latest Direct and it's missing our discussion on the end of the RTX 5090, principally because reports out of Taiwan see Nvidia denying it has been discontinued, which we've now confirmed with Nvidia marketing. So we're considering either a) dropping the story (as we have done for this early access Direct) or discussing the new story. If RTX 5090 hasn't been discontinued, does its silly pricing effective mean it has been to all intents and purposes? Is a prospective 24GB 5080 a worthwhile (vaguely) affordable update?

Anyway, onto what actually did make it into the show:

A year on from its initial launch, Xbox Ally gets a brilliant OLED upgrade for the new X20 edition but are we any closer to an actual Xbox-like experience? Meanwhile, Nvidia delivers faster frame-gen and DLSS 5 while Epic acts like a lightning rod for all the AI hate with its latest pivot. Oliver tests out The Crew Motorfest on Switch 2, while John has thoughts on Castlevania: Belmont's Curse.

We do not use the term vibe coding. We call it agentic software engineering. And I am very sure that all bigger companies mean this approach which Oliver tried to explain.

Which is the point we are making - in a delicate area like this, bulldozing in with terms like "vibe coding" is ill-advised and needlessly provocative.

I can tell you that 90+% of software engineering at Apple, Microsoft, and Google are doing programming agentically—most of the best programmers in the world are no longer either reading or writing code. The nature of the job has completely changed.

Gaming aside, the largest SaaS companies on the planet still make 1000s of pushes a day-to-week worldwide across Dev-SIT-Pre/Prod repos with noteably millions of automated QA checks along their change release pipelines to ensure Sec and Ops best practices are maintained. Is informed prompting with Agentic Software Engineering (ASE) used to attempt to acelerate development? Absolutely. Does it remove the need to read and write code? Not at all. The human in the loop has simply prioritised being (sometimes mearly playing) the senior developer, approving and rejecting outcomes. ASE is like autocrafting in an RPG. The chance of relevant success stems from the operators historical manual experience, meanwhile MCPs make ASE slightly more accessible yet the outcomes are wild due to prompting being too broad from aspirationally self-titled developers with slim to no experience.

We have automated PR reviews using LLMs (human still has to ultimately review and approve themselves though). These reviews catch all sorts of bugs and errors that humans miss.
