Hello everyone!

As we start to reconstruct our Patreon in the coming weeks, we will begin with taking your questions and comments right here for this week's DF Direct Weekly!

This week, Alex, Rich, Will and Tom will be sitting down to discuss news and topics such as the Radeon 6700XT, NVIDIA vs AMD lowthread/IPC driver overhead and FPS Boosts on the next-gen consoles. If you have any comments you'd like to share on these topics, post them in the comments below, we might just bring up your comment during the show. Additionally John and Audi sat down for a quick chat with friend of the channel Alex Aniel and his new book Itchy, Tasty: An Unofficial History of Resident Evil.

And of course as usual, we will take your questions for our weekly Q&A exclusively here on Patreon! Got a question for the gang? Post it in the comments below!

Keep checking back right here for updates on our Patreon overhaul! We are quite excited to share what we have in store for the channel and exclusively for YOU!

FPS boost is a game-changer for playing old games on the Series consoles (in fact I'll probably play some older backlog games on Xbox now for the achievements instead of on PC). Any clues on how Microsoft managed to pull it off without changing the game code? Seems like voodoo magic to me (just like DLSS).

Anonymous

Do you think that Nvidia's initiative with CMP units for mining will make a difference? I mean, what's to stop miners from buying both CMP and gaming GPUs? I'd like to upgrade my GTX 1060 to RTX 3060, but I may not be able to for quite a while, because 3060 is being sold for 2-3x of MSRP if sold at all.

Anonymous

Maybe you can shed some light onto the topic why everything is sold out for months now (New GPUs, older GPUs, new Consoles).

Anonymous

I think they mentioned how, but I concur if you can bring this explanation down to “normal” user level :)

Ryan Acheson

Bethesda have been a big supporter of VR prior to the MS acquisition (and just announced Doom 3 VR Edition for PSVR). Given Microsoft haven't really been pushing the VR space, what do you think the future of VR from Bethesda and Xbox might look like in the near to mid future?

The Wooniest Woona

John, I know you have used an OLED for a while, so I'm curious if you've had any issues using bob deinterlacing on it for retro games? I've seen some concern around the internet that it could cause faster burn in, but I haven't seen anything conclusive. I just know I'd feel better about using an OSSC on my OLED if you've haven't seen any issues since you've had an OLED for a while.

Brian Harelick

Do you guys think a Retrotink 2X pro would be a good investment for someone building a PS2 collection? I emulate my PS2 games now, but I want to use my real hardware. An OSSC seems much trickier to get set up properly and going.

AGSMA

If you had the opportunity to learn a game engine, either freeware or proprietary, which one would you chose?

Pat

Probably an obvious question, but do any of you have any personal wishes to get the FPS boost treatment, be it xbox one or even older?

Cameron O'Neill

What should realistic expectations be for AMD’s FidelityFX? What if any features or benefits will it add to consoles?

Ezequiel Alfonso

Which is it?: Alex says Hallway of DOOM in the original video and Richard has now established it as Corridor of DOOM. I need to know!

Anonymous

My Question for the team is, has any of you played Shadowrun on the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. If so, what are your thoughts on it.

Anonymous

Backwards compatibility (360 and prior) on Xbox is famously hindered by the need to re-license every game as they are technically redistributing a modified version. Could Microsoft have skirted this by building some level of 360/OG Xbox hardware emulation right into the new consoles? If so, do you guys think of any reasons why they didn't do this (beyond just pure cost)?

Anonymous

So something I've been thinking about more is does services like gamepass reduce the overall value of games. I'm not talking about price, I'm referring with the ability to play as many games as you want, does it make you less likely to finish games/truly engage with it? As would have been the case in years gone by, where you only had a few games to play/didnt get them that often so you would finish/replay them.

Anonymous

Did Alex's power supply say "Auf wiedersehen" before it blew up? 🤔

Roel

How is Tom's hair so glorious?

Max van der Molen

When AMD's (or Microsoft's) eventual DLSS equivalent comes out, do you think Microsoft might be able to implement it in a similar manner as the FPS boost and AUTO HDR without the need to modify the actual game code?

Anonymous

Hi, how do you think the current CPU and GPU shortages are impacting planning of future fab capacities (5nm, etc)? How much of the current shortages are related to TSMC's ability to supply 7nm? Thanks!

Scott Larsen

I own 2 retro tinks. And older 2x, and the most recent 2x Pro Multiformat. Really worth it imo. Works great with good component cables. Paired with the M Classic makes it even better.

MittenFacedLass

I'd say it's unlikely, simply due to how DLSS works and the fact that it requires implementation on the dev side generally, at least to an extent. But that's also presuming their eventual solution works in a similar way, which isn't guaranteed. And that said, if it were like FPS boost, it'd still be something you could only enable on a title by title basis, so it'd still be limited that way, presumably anyway? I dunno. I'd love to see a drop-in solution for image quality, that can just fix anything without extra work, but I find it far fetched.

Colin Kraebel

It has been 5 years since the Inside Digital Foundry videos were released, which explained how performance is measured. Since then, HDR and VRR have become prevalent along with increased resolutions and framerates. I'm sure that has required adjustments to DF's tools. Are there plans to produce videos that update us on your process? Thanks!

Kinoli

Now that Nintendo is hoping in the bandwagon of the remasters with the Super Mario 3D All Stars and the Zelda Skyward Sword, I have two questions: which other Nintendo titles do you think will be remastered and which do you want to be remastered?

Going into last gen, the consoles adding video and screenshot capture was a big deal. This gen the PS5 has improved the quality of the captures and Xbox has added a button, but appears to have done little to improve the experience aside from going from 30 to 60 FPS. A 4K capture still requires conversion and can’t be captured and uploaded automatically in the background and its overall quite cumbersome. Do you think this is the extent that we’ll see this feature set worked on for the foreseeable future? Do you know of any future improvements down the line or is the realm of better capture going to be left to external devices? (From Cliptacular again, but Patreon has my full name and I’d prefer the nickname if possible!)

Mako

Do you expect to see a major uptick in vram utilization now that "affordable" cards actually have up to 16GB? I wonder just how much 8GB on anything up to a 2080 Super/5700XT has previously limited what developers could reasonably ship with.

Anonymous

Regarding FPS boost- You've commented in a couple videos how unlocked PS4 pro games run better on PS5 than One X counterparts do on Series X because of lower target res on the Pro. Since many Xbox one games run at below 1080p would that mean more of them could get 60fps upgrades than if they were higher res? In a weird way the Series consoles could benefit more because of lower res xbox one games. thx keep up the great work.

Steven Milne

Just want to give a big thank you to DF to revamping the Patreon experience... I've been a long time patreon supporter and have loved downloading the raw video files - but I can't wait to see what you have in store exclusively going forward.

Anonymous

Any idea yet how you are going to be able to measure clarity quantifiably? As we know, raw resolution numbers count for very little now!

Pat

Guess I'll also add my own. I'd love to see red dead redemption 1 as well as all the forza horizon games running at 60

MrBurns

Back in the late 90s / early 2000s the Grand Prix Series from Microprose was known for its excellent racing physics. Have you guys any memories of this series and would consider doing a DF Retro / Retro PC episode on this?

Anonymous

I have found that the quality of HDR implementation varies dramatically from game to game at the moment. I personally find that this has a big impact on visual quality. Have you all considered adding some kind of consistent criteria to better describe HDR in games?

Allan Lindqvist

How are you guys doing? Social media and comment sections can be really negative sometimes and it does seem to get to you from time to time.. also super fun to have audi on board as well!

1040STF

Two part HDR question ! 1/ Is it really hard to capture HDR videos for you ? I guess "yes" because we don't see a lot of them... but why ? How much time/ressource does it cost you ? 2/ Don't you think it's time for a new "Best HDR presentation" video ? 🙂

MittenFacedLass

Not sure you can quantify that, really? Basically just a matter of percepion? You can compare an amount of detail in an image of course, but that can bring a lot of other settings and factors into things. I remember there were a lot of strange cases on the last gen Pro consoles, where sometimes resolution modes would arguably have less clarity/detail despite running at a higher res, because they'd drop texture quality/filtering settings and other image quality settings, so arguably you'd have a higher res image, but it sometimes would actually have less clarity/detail than other modes? That should happen less now on current gen consoles, but it's still a weird thing to run into/deal with. And I'm not sure how you could quantify differences like that.

Tom Panzeca

Do we know the root cause of all of the 30fps framepacing issues on PS4? Why was it so common?

Anonymous

Are there any genres of games that (each of) you don't look forward to reviewing?

Anonymous

The FUTURE?? - Using cloud processing to stream in Assets, AI, Weather Systems etc. This would free up the Hardware to handle more local immediate data.

The Phantomnaut

There are folks who hate motion blur but I know you guys love motion blur in various degrees. What post-processing effect do you not prefer instead?

Anonymous

Not DF here obviously but HDR isn't difficult to capture. It is however difficult to integrate into a workflow with non-HDR assets and other game footage and just increase the turnaround time of a project. Also, HDR is display specific and needs to be output in a manner that suits the receiving display. Consoles these days let you set your display preferences through the console settings. If the video is output for a particular display, then it won't look good on other panels.

Michaelangel007

Any chance you could showcase the differences between 30 FPS, 60 FPS, 120 FPS, and 240 FPS for BOTH gaming and movies? There are still a lot of uninformed people out there who don't see the point of using a higher framerate then 30 FPS, are oblivious to judder and don't understand how a high rate minimizes the stutter.

Allan Lindqvist

Have you guys considered using pix (the directx debug tool) to dig deeper into how pc games are rendered?

Joe Esposito

8K seems like it faces a steep hill to mainstream adoption, even though it's certainly gorgeous in terms of fidelity. When you take into consideration things like how immense game file sizes will be and the way bandwidth will get hammered, do you see 8K being anything other than a fancy tech demo in the next 3-5 years?

Alistair Albus Pines de Montmollin

Could you please post DF Direct in the standard RSS and Podcast indexers, so we can play the audio (only) in Podcast apps like Castro, Pocket Cast and Apple Music? It seems to be just your faces anyway. Unless you plan to add a lot of game footage while you speak, it would make a great audio podcast.

Anonymous

Greetings awesome DF team, how do you imagine gaming future, say, after 10-15 years? Taking into account current technology trends (VR/AR/XR, AI, clouds, sensor technology, newly registered Sony smell sensing patent, etc...)? Provocation for some fantasy thoughts. :) Thank you!

MGsubbie

Do you think the 60fps standard and inclusion of 120fps modes will continue in the new generation? Considering most games are cross-gen and need to run on much slower hardware, the new gen has a lot of room left in the tank for higher frame rates. I'm afraid that once games are fully made around the new hardware, 30fps with bigger leaps in graphical fidelity and complexity will become the new standard.

Doc

Hello gang, I may have one question but I don't know if it could fit your weekly Q&A's scope. Here it is : Could you someday analyse Fable 3 PC ? It is somewhat far above what the Xbox 360 could do in terms of visual. Even with One X enhanced mode on backward compatibility, it's still not on par with its PC counterpart. And while we're at it, it doesn't run perfectly even with today's cpu and gpu.

Alistair Albus Pines de Montmollin

Do you know a way to capture color-corrected SDR (PNG) screenshots and video from HDR games on Windows, like you can with the PS4, PS5 (and Xbox I think) Share Button? I just want to take screenshots normally like we can with Steam and Nvidia Experience, but while I’m playing the game in HDR. I only see Nvidia Ansel able to save HDR screenshots. But those are saved in a format not widely used, to preserve the HDR part. And it’s not as easy to take them as pressing a button. (You have to go in the Ansel menu and select it every time, then press a button in the UI). I don’t care about preserving the HDR in the screenshots, I just want a normal PNG, color corrected from the HDR game.

Do you think it is reasonable for a title developed for the new consoles to rely on VRR to smooth out frame rate inconsistencies under 60fps? It has been particularly disappointing to see a number of XSX titles failing to maintain 60fps with VRR mentioned as the only saving grace. No doubt it varies from title-to-title, but in general it seems to me that there is more than enough horsepower in the current consoles (XSX and PS5 in particular) to consistently hit 60fps without the need to fall back on VRR. Above 60fps is a different story. Thoughts?

Anonymous

How about some general contemplation / speculation on what part resolution will play in tomorrows graphics? Are we truly moving to a "post-resolution" era and how soon?

Container7

When analyzing gameplay footage, how does DF ensure that any 'frame-cadence' issues (Micro Stuttering, etc) are not being introduced by the capture equipment itself? Cheers!

Euan Dewar

It seems like at least a few of you guys have learnt multiple languages. I would be interested to hear how you went through that process and what prompted it in the first place. Oh and much love :)

Dubuc Nathan

Hey guys, we all know you are experts and all, but we all had our times when we were naive. I was curious, what was something you believed, a rumor, whether you made it up yourself or not, about the future of gaming/technology and you ended up being completely off?

Anonymous

Could you do a comprehensive look at Skyrim on Series consoles now that the FPS boost has gone live? I'm curious if there is any improvements beyond framerate as I was already using Skyrim's uncapped FPS mod on my series X.

Anonymous

Hi DF! Does Ray Tracing looks different running in AMD or RTX hardware?

Bryan McIntosh

Since we have some retro computing enthusiasm budding on the DF team lately, how about a comment on the availability of some older PC hardware? Voodoo2 cards seem to be going for over $100 USD on eBay, as are Radeon 9700 Pros. I just grabbed a TNT2 (not even a TNT2 Ultra) for just under $30 USD, but I had to hunt to find one that wasn't closer to $70 or $80. It's getting almost as bad as purchasing a modern GPU!

Minion

Which program was John and Alex using to see each other for the Chaos Theory video? Will AMD's version of dlss for consoles be at least half as good as Nvidia's dlss 1.0 or 2.0?

Anonymous

Which of the new graphics cards (including the 6700 xt) would you most recommend for a 1440p Linux gaming system when paired with one of the latest ryzen cpus?

Jason Huanosta

Do you think the Xbox Series S would have been better marketed as a 1080p machine than 1440p? It looks like every Series S update seems to target 1080p 60. Also with up to 120fps advertised, a 1080p resolution would better favor that frame rate. P.S. Love all the content you’ve been putting out.

Gabriel Ralls

Would love to see more thoughts on PS5/XSX in that the current trend is that games are essentially giving users the choice between "PS4 games in 60fps" vs "PS4 games in 4K with Ray-tracing". Of course we'll move towards native next-gen games soon, but would be interesting to see if 60fps / 4K will be dropped for better visuals overall, or whether we're essentially stuck with making a choice between the two forever.

GhostofWar

I want to take Alex's Crysis shrine and twist it. So if you had a Shrine of sacrifice (alter of sacrifice?) and any game you put on it would be deleted from history and your memory what would each of you choose? It's obviously magic so digital only games can be put on it. It doesn't have to be a technical reason (it can be though), it could be a game with an ending you hated or something that made you rage so hard you broke a controller or keyboard etc.

Lionel Lemarie

Hi folks. What will it take to get 4K/120 captures and analysis?

Ali Almutawa

Hi guys, love the show! almost 8 years after the release of the PS4, do you think SONY can make a portable PS4 to compete with Nintendo Switch? Thanks

Rucola-Joe

Hi everyone! I've been wondering why John and Audi have chosen Germany as their second home. Thus my question are: Why did you guys move to Germany? And how good is your German? Keep up the amazing work ... und auf Wiedersehen!

Rip Van Winkle

Hey Digital Foundry team, my question is regarding HDR content, especially with AutoHDR being a thing on PC now. It seems that you've mostly stopped producing HDR videos. Is there any reason why, and would you be willing to make more HDR focused videos in the future? I don't think HDR gets enough love -- it's a performance-free way to drastically improve image quality and the beauty of the presentation.

Andre Mauricio Zelak

Hi, with the good temporal anti-aliasing solutions we have in some of the greatest engines do you believe the developers should be targeting lower than 4K resolutions in consoles and using the extra power to achieve consistent frame rates and better pixel quality? I mean, instead of 4K with lower settings. I know that it depends on the art design and direction of the game, but which approach has producing better results in your opinions?

kate

If and when Nintendo do release a new Switch 'Pro' i.e. a more powerful Switch, is there a chance that new games will no longer be released on the current Switch, or have to be significantly pared back?

DresdenFiles00

Not sure if this fits with your typical coverage but I'll through it out there. It appears that Gigabyte and ASUS brand RTX 3000 series cards have had a US retail price increase of about 25% in the last 2 weeks. I'm seeing this at Best Buy, Micro Center, Newegg, B&H Photo to name a few. This is over and above the approx. 15% increase we saw in January which was supposed to be due to the US/China tariffs. I'm not sure if this has affected prices outside the US. So far EVGA prices haven't changed. Is there some new component shortage that might be responsible? Is this just profit taking due to supply/demand issues? Have you heard anything from your industry contacts? One example of the recent price changes for reference: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9z3mP6/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-3080-10-gb-gaming-oc-video-card-gvn3080gamingoc10gd
