Any thoughts around Apple’s M1 chips? Not directly gaming related but looks like there’s general renewed industry interest in ARM.

Frank

Concerning Resident Evil Village. How is input lag? 2 and 3 remastered were really smooth ,but playing 7 after those i was shocked how sluggish it felt despite also running at 60fps. 7 and Village both use first person so im a bit concerned.

Hi DF team, Do you think we will see image reconstruction solutions that are comparable to DLSS on next-gen consoles? DLSS can generate high quality, high resolution images for a fraction of the cost of native rendering and with generally superior quality and performance to other reconstruction techniques. Obviously the consoles don’t have dedicated machine learning hardware but do you think running ML on the shaders would be viable for a similar technique? Or do you think non-ML solutions like AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution or more typical checkerboarding or upsampling solutions will be competitive with current DLSS? It feels like a bit of a shame that the consoles don’t have dedicated ML hardware given that it seems a lot of upcoming graphics advancements in the PC space are going to be ML-based. Thanks, Oliver

Why is Rich the one getting teased the most btw?

Hello DF Team Do you guys think that there is a possibility that FidelityFX would be implemented in the new Forza Motorsport Game (down the line)? And do you think that the new Forza Motorsport Game, might be the first Next-Gen title on Series X, that uses the "full" potential of the new Series X architecture? P.S: Historically speaking Turn 10 Studios delivered most of the time pretty well-optimized xbox games P.P.S: Would really love to hear your guy's thoughts about this :) Cheers, Haris

Hey Team, I've been going through a ps3 phase lately and playing through some of the classics, which got me thinking... Would you ever consider a short series based around for example the Resistance, Motorstorm or Uncharted trilogies where each entry is examined and compared to its sequels to highlight the engine advancements made throughout each iteration in their series? It would be pretty interesting to see how engines were built upon back in that age when the tech was supposedly more difficult to work around. Thanks for all you do guys!

Hi DF team, I want to put together a win 95/DOS pc to play my big box pc games but I am not sure how to start. I don't want to end up wasting tons of money buying stuff and it not all coming together. Could you give any advice on whether I should buy a prebuilt or buy parts and assemble them into a spare modern case which I do have. Also any advice on a crt monitor, I was lucky enough to have kept my Trinitron TV but the monitors from when I was younger have all gone. Living in the UK if that also affects advice. Thanks for all the content!

Hi DF team, Have you considered including maybe more dev interviews to your DF retro videos also? Would be interesting to listen dev commentaries how specific game was made or what the struggle was back in a day. Also when could we see Richard's live stream of Crazy Frog games? :D

Paul Paster

Was there ever a video you released that you feared was too niche for your general audience but ended up exceeding your expectations in reception or view count?

andre surles

Again... could weather systems, AI and other background engine tasks be done in the cloud to free up local hardware to improve processing power?

As a new Mortal Kombat movie has been released, what is your favorite video game adaptation into a movie ? Each of you. For good or bad reasons obviously :-)

(Is it worth asking an unanswered question two weeks in a row ? I don't wanna spam :/ But if it's worth, here it is) (I won't ask it a third time don't worry lol)

Who came up with the name Digital Foundry? What was the inspiration for the name?

Joe Tangco

D'you guys have any recommendations for quality, wireless headphones that I can easily swap between XSX and PS5? (Yes, like you guys, I'm one of "those" people.) Specifically: headphones that support PS5's surround and Xbox's Dolby Atmos. I don't really care about the voice/microphone aspect, as I never play multiplayer. (Yes, I am also one of "those" people too.)

Adrian

Hello! My question is this: is there any particular reason why dynamic resolution scaling is usually absent on PC when a game's console counterpart has an implementation of it? Take Crysis Remastered and Nioh 1 & 2 for example. Just a curious thought. Thanks!

Hi DF Crew, because John is a big animation fan would it be interesting if his YouTube channel did a DF Retro spin off code name DF Animation?

Hi there. Good that Sony announced PS3 and PSV stores will continue to operate. It reminds me of something after they announced to close the store. On Apr. 11 (Pacific Time), Jim Ryan posted a resignation letter on Instagram in the evening, saying that he cannot sustain the success of PlayStation. Hours later, he posted another one as if Shawn Layden will be back. On Apr. 12, he posted a Thank You letter that the boards invited him back as CEO. Soon after, he deleted all of those posts.

Hey DF Crew! What’s a genre of game that you feel needs a total revamp or revolution? I’m a hardcore MMORPG player and I believe the genre has grown sort of stale with major titles reaching the end of their life cycle and new ones not really innovating the genre like say Super Mario 64 did for the platformer. Thoughts?

Anonymous

I found it really really weird because I didn't see ANY media coverage of Jim Ryan's resignation. Did you guys notice those posts? Do you know if something happens within the company that causes this back and forth?

Once VRR is *real* on PS5 and common in TVs, would it be best for devs to make all the games have unlocked framerates and just run VRR?

bjorktribe

My first Patreon, will you change the name to "Digital Lust"? Because that's what has happened to me since I found this channel. Actually, this channel is inspiring more hardware lust in my case. It's really steered me towards preservation of these physical goods! Do you have anything you're especially proud of with regards to effects of your influence on the subscriber base? Thanks!

Dear Rich, Alex & John, I would like to ask about audio developments in games and console / PC hardware. There is a lot of coverage regarding raytracing in games and I wondered what the next development equivalent would in audio engineering? I found it very encouraging that during Mark Cerny's PS5’s technical presentation there was a large emphasis on audio development since the PS4 had subjectively worse audio than the PS3 . Is this Tempest Engine is just marketing with no tangible technical improvements and how would you even measure or benchmark it? On a similar note, there doesn’t seem to be the same market anymore for dedicated sound cards for PCs? Why is that, is that due to lack of technical developments that require or benefit from a dedicated sound card?

Ben McSkelly

New Patron here. Last week Alex mentioned how manual placing of light sources is labour intensive.. How hard is ray tracing to impliment for smaller studios or even indies? Do the consoles or major commercial engines have APIs/tools to make it easier?

Oliver Mackenzie

Hi DF team, The highlight new graphical feature of the new consoles has been ray tracing. We’ve seen several AAA games integrate ray tracing features already, most notably ray traced reflections. On consoles, these games often offer a mode with flashy ray traced effects turned on, and a mode without them that offers higher performance. Do you think that games will continue to maintain the ray traced vs. non ray traced split, with games that continue to offer fully rasterized rendering modes? Or do you think that games will integrate ray tracing more fully, with tracing built into designing the visuals (especially with less expensive techniques like ray traced shadowing)? Thanks, Oliver

It's me... teeee-dawggg here again. Nvidia recommends setting VSYNC on at the driver level for when using GSYNC and wanting to reduce tearing, versus capping the FPS at three below your monitors refresh rate. Do you agree with this? Does capping FPS not reduce latency versus Vsync? Any other tips for getting the most out of a gsync, high refresh rate panel?

Hi there, My question is simple : what games would you wish the most to get an FPS Boost on Series X and S ? If my choices can help you in your reflexion, there they are : mostly action games like the PlatinumGames ones. Arcade games, racing games (Dirt 5 feels so fantastic in 120). And I wish for as much as possible Xbox OG or 360 at 120fps : I guess all of them could go to 120. On top of my list are the fast paced games like Sonic Generations. All the best to the team !

Nolasco

Hello fellows, hope you are all doing great. You were talking a while back about the speed in games between pal and ntsc in the 80s Personally I played games since the first atari console and grew up with nes, megadrive and such. My first experience at home was the pal version of games and I never actually knew there were running slow so when I played them so for me it was the right speed and right speed in music too. But when I bought the mega drive version of streets of rage it was running just as fast as the ntsc version. Was it just me or were there some pal version of games that were exactly as the ntsc counterpart? P. S maybe the border up and down were there tho 😅 Thanks guys take care and stay safe 💕

Hello DF crew! I've been thinking a lot about the long-term impact of Game Pass on the gaming industry, so I'd love to hear some of your thoughts. It worries me when I hear comments like "this is a great 'Game Pass game'", or "that game is 'good enough' for Game Pass"… Could we see a 'quantity over quality' trend because of this mindset? Are we already seeing live service games stealing the focus from narrative based experiences? Is it like TV series slowly taking over the great feature films of old and streaming services basically killing the movie theatre?

Christian Büschel

Yeah they are pretty impressive and would also like to hear the teams thoughts. A Apple made Switch competitor would be amazing (at least from a technical perspective).

Robert F

I would be interested in a financial opinion piece on Gamepass in conjunction with developer or publisher experiences. I think the Netflix / Gamepass economic comparison is slightly unfair as it's far easier to monetise games via content purchases and microtransactions there could be some truth in the content comparision in which Netflix's big (first party) blockbuster films or shows drop infrequently propped up by a lot of filler, back dated or new very economic entertainment content.

Art Vandelay

Agreed, but I did allude to the worrying trend towards games as a service. Which could actually be worse than the simple focus on quantity over quality. I mean, Returnal is out today, and that is the quintessential example of the path I'd personally like to see the industry going for. You see, I don't question the long term financial viability of Game Pass. What I do question is the kind of game that makes the most sense in that kind of model. Which could set a trend that I really don't like. Also, Game Pass only makes financial sense if it reaches 100+ million active users (maybe more). The subscription service model essentially requires some sort of monopoly. That's why you now see Microsoft pouring endless money towards both developers and users. MS is basically paying for your games. This is the strategy of most big techs: eat the initial loss, then conquer the market for themselves. And that's actually the main issue here. I like Sony's approach much better and Microsoft is clearly trying to break it. I really hope they fail miserably.
