Does the difficulty of progressing in a game often hamper your ability to evaluate it? In a game like Nioh or Dark Souls, it seems challenging to progress far enough for a representative sample.

Since we are discussing VR this week with the PSVR2 leak, if you could each see a franchise reworked for VR, what would it be? For me, it would have to be Red Dead Redemption or Left 4 Dead.

Cass Miller

Not necessarily a question, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the USB-C part of the PSVR2 rumor. Eliminating the giant breakout box of PSVR and having just a single USB-C cable coming out of the front of your PS5 is great - but at the same, I can't help but feel slightly disappointed that Sony didn't push things farther and go full wireless with it. PS5 actually has a very capable, 2x2 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi 6 system in it and true wireless (but still powerful) VR is what everyone is hoping for in the future.

Did Forza Horizon 4’s 4K60 update ever get fixed on Series X? Alex's coverage highlighted that it was missing much of the One X version's enhancements at launch, or perhaps it was a 4K60 mode using the One S version's settings. Thanks.

Will

Given the additional demands of rendering in vr what do the team think is feasible visually/resolution wise on psvr2 with something like Village

Awesome content, I love following you over the years back when Rich did those awesome tech analysis articles on game engines. Maybe you could re publish them as some sort of ebook? I've really enjoyed the John's DF Retro series since it started, and the insight is really fun and exciting to learn about. The interviews are great as the excitement is genuine and infectious. Would it be possible to have some of these interviews for DF Retro? I would love to see John interview Andy Gavin, he's got such a wealth of knowledge and excitement that would really mesh well with John's.

Hey guys. Question for Richard here. I remember the days when Richard was editor of Sega Magazine and then Sega Saturn Magazine. Does he have any interesting information on the never released Sega Neptune console? Did the console ever have any planned titles?

Pavel Iakovenko

Nowadays we see different approaches of choosing game engines for AAA titles. Coalition have recently announced that they'll continue using Unreal Engine(alongside with other Microsoft's first party studio — Ninja Theory), while many Sony's first party studios build games based on their own engines. There is also another("hybrid") approach — usage of game engines based on publisher/owner(EA's studios with Frostbite, Bethesda's studios with id Tech).
In your opinion where game industry is going(in case of development of AAA titles) — to infinite usage of a few most popular game engines(UE, Unity, etc) or there will be more new impressive game engines from independent studios(e.g. development of RED Engine from once small Polish studio)? Will we seen in nearest future another big common game engine like UE?

With so many delays becoming normalized, do you think game industry crunch might become alleviated once people return to “office”? The alternative seems like either worse crunch or no change.

As VR is being talked about my question is: If we combine the discovery a while back of the Xbox message saying "this VR headsets needs an update" when plugging in certain headsets, and Gabe Newell mentioning consoles recently.... should we put two and two together and make 5 by thinking Valve Index support coming to Xbox?

Have you ever bought a gaming system just for that one special game you just had to have and by playing (mostly) only that game, making that game purchase a very expensive purchase?

Da Face

What is your favorite gaming era or generation? Feel free to define gaming eras anyway you wish...8 bit, 16 bit etc or otherwise.

In a recent interview with The Verge, core technical director at Insomniac Games - Mike Fitzgerald, said that in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, they're unloading data behind the camera, and can reload it off of the SSD by the time the camera spins back around. This is very much in line with what Mark Cerny talked about would be possible at the Road to PS5 event. Fitzgerald also said they're just scratching the surface of what the SSD and IO unit can do. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on seeing awesome techniques like this, and where you see Sony's first party studios taking this powerful storage technology in the future, for their PS5 exclusive titles. Especially with mature tools, and years working with the platform. Thanks!

Luke

Hey team, how do you feel about Quality of the next gen version of Control UE? I've seen your video - great as always. But I was a bit disappointed because of the much lower settings that were used on consoles. Could they have done better? And what do you think about the future, will we see 4k (or 1440p) @ 60fps with RT for more games on console (in good quality) or will it - most likely - be either 4k/60Fps no RT or RT and 30fps? Thanks and keep up the good work!

Sven Dahlin

I'm a huge fan of DLSS and use it on all the games that support it. But, it comes at a price in the form of die space for the tensor cores. If the die space used for tensor cores would have been used for CUDA cores, how big would the difference be (vs DLSS)?

Travis Stockton

Is ray-tracing something that can be pre-calculated the same way that certain physics operations can be? With RT being integrated more into modern engines, can it be as simple as rendering out really high quality cube maps for use in engine-driven cutscenes without having to do ray-tracing in realtime?

TransTechGirl

Would you rather only have 1080p but always get 144fps or 4K but only ever get 60fps?

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the 2012 Watch Dogs E3 demo, and I recall Rich saying that there was an unbelievable story he heard about the demo. Something about it "not running on PC" like everyone thought. We would love to hear what the whole story is there.

A question for all of you. How did you gain the technical knowledge you have about games and gaming hardware, especially when it comes to understanding different rendering techniques (e.g. ray tracing, global illumination, etc.) and such? Are you self-taught, has past employment helped you in some way, have you done courses on these topics in the past, etc.? Thanks!

Ali Almutawa

Now that we know PSVR2 has inside out tracking, do you think the lights of the Dualsense are facing the player is for tracking purposes? does that give us hope for backward compatibility?

Anonymous

I'm gonna keep asking what Rich and John's favourite Sega Saturn games are (both Western and Japanese) until the world gets its answer.

shea

are there any known rendering techniques that would benefit more from PS5's higher gpu clockspeed vs the XSX's wider gpu?

Jack Robinson

Could the adoption of ray tracing help in cutting down on the file size of a game, since less lighting information would need to be pre-calculated?

André Scheffler

Could you give an update on the option to have 120 FPS videos on your page? I'd be really interested 👍

Erik Kelly

Which do you think is better - Xbox or Playstation? Just kidding, obviously that's not my real question. This is probably for John - what is the best way to play MechWarrior 2 right now, in your opinion? Preferably with a joystick. You mentioned this one in the last Direct and I got some serious nostalgia pangs.

Adam

Have any of you ever been accused of being fanboys for two different platforms in the comments section of the same face-off video?

Pol Kallamata

Do you believe that games that are designed specifically for a single platform achieve superior results graphically compared to multiplatform titles? This is sometimes brought up as an argument in favor of exclusivity. Curious as to what your thoughts are.

Simplex

Any chance of DF covering It takes two? It's a beautiful game which is very well optimized on PC.

Takeshino

We've yet to have a "next-gen" racing game, as far as I know. Considering the cumulative nature of raytracing, are racing games like the upcoming GT7 and the next two Forzas at a RT disadvantage, compared to most other games, especially in lighting? That being said, how excited are you for GT7's photo mode?

Anonymous

Is RT being overused in order to be a "wow" feature? It seems developers try to make materials reflective to show off RT, but it winds up just looking gimmicky. I honestly think RT shadows are the most effective way to add realism to games with the current levels of rasterizing and RT we have today, but game developers don't seem to agree

After playing Titanfall 2 on Series X, I went back to look at old DF videos and seen that Titanfall on One X could possibly hit 6k in some scenes. I was wondering if there have been any tests to see how Series X could hold 6K/60 or what the average native resolution would be at 60fps.

With Eurovision, the European cultural behemoth, fast approaching I assume there is considerable tension within the international DF Team. How is the atmosphere these days? I assume the exchanges between Alex, Rich and Tom are about to go nuclear. Audi's quietly apologising for Tixx (as am I, well, not really, you deserve it) while John, who is mercifully not born into this madness, is all questions. The Cold War pales in comparison.

Christoph Zürcher

Really excited about PSVR2. Which are some of the teams favourite Playstation accessories? Is there any love for the GunCon, EyeToy or Move for example?

Anonymous

Do you think at any point VR headsets will fully overtake the TV as a preferred way to experience games? Also thoughts on those new dualsense colour schemes?

Sonicx9

Will the cross gen dye off once Switch Pro/PSVR2 releases?

Art Vandelay

Last week, you guys talked a little about UE5's Lumen and how that could potentially compete with hardware accelerated ray tracing. Now, couldn't Lumen itself take advantage of RDNA 2's Ray Accelerators? Especially considering the more programmable nature of AMD's RT implementation.

Will DF be getting their hands on a 4700S kit, the AMD PC hardware popping up in China that is supposed to be an Xbox Series X SOC with the iGPU disabled, even having similar/the same RAM hardwired on the motherboard? Would make for some incredibly interesting comparisons I bet!

The Portugeezer

What if the difference between Xbox FPS Boost and Playstation Game Boost? Correct me if i'm wrong, but am i right to think there's not many games taking advantage of Game Boost on the Playstation?

Tyler Hushour

What is everyone’s favorite bands?

digitalfoundry

PlayStation requires the title to be patched, while Xbox does it at the system level with no changes to the code.

What are some of your favorite true-oddball games? For example, Caution Seaman, on the Dreamcast.
